23, 1856, and was named-for President Zachary Taylor.
Taylor County was partitioned from Madison County's
sprawling area as the 34t county of Florida, on Dec. 23,
1856. The county's first census, taken in 1860, stood at

Americans who resided in the area because of the abun-
dance of wild rose bushes. In 1875 it was changed to
Perrytown after Goverior Stark Perry, but later the
"town" was dropped and the name became Perry.

Madison Starke Perry -was Florida's fourth governor,
serving from Oct. 5, 1857; to Oct. 7, 1861. After his term as
governor ended, Perry served as colonel of the 7th Florida
Regiment until illness forced his retirement,
elected in 1856
Born in Lancaster, S.C., Madison Starke Perry came to Florida in the late
1830s, settled and founded the village of Rochelle in Alachua County.
He became a leader among the plantation owners in Alachua County and
was elected to represent the county in the Florida Senate in 1850.
He ran for and was elected governor in 1856, assuming office on Oct. 5,
As governor, Perry helped bring about the settlement of a long-standing
boundary dispute with Georgia and encouraged the building of railways.
During the years before the Civil War, Perry foresaw the possibility that
Florida might secede from the Union, and in 1858 urged the
reestablishment of the state's militia.
After his term as governor ended on Oct. 7, 1861, Perry, at age 48, was
elected Colonel of the 7th Regiment of Florida Infantry Volunteers. He
enlisted on July 3, 1862, at Camp Kirby, Tenn. This unit was shipped to
eastern Tennesseee, serving on picket duty near Knoxville, prior to its
transfer to the Kentucky-Tennessee line.
Perry resigned his commission,April 30, 1863, due to poor health. He
returned home, where he died in March 1865 at his home in Rochelle.
The city of Starke (Fla.) is also named in his honor.
