Found after land/air search

Elderly man stranded in woods

An elderly Perry man who
survived 24 hours stuck in the
woods was found Wednesday after
a massive hunt was launched
Tuesday on land and in the air by
multiple governmental agencies
and hordes of volunteers. .
Taylor County Sheriffs Office
Cpt; Audie Towles said John T.
McNeese, 79, left his home
sometime Tuesday and ended up in
the edge of the San Pedro Bay off
the end of Johnson Stripling Road.
After a few miles in the woods,
McNeese's truck dropped into deep
sand\ ruts and became stuck.
McNeese made several 'futile
attempts to get the truck out,
including using a board to dig it
out, but the sand was too deep.
McNeese used his cell phone to
- call: family members, but was
unsure of his location. The family
contacted L. S. Turner, who
atrempred to locate McNeese by
plane, 'while others conducted a
ground search.
When the man could not be
located, TCSO was called.
"We attempted to find him by
having his cell phone provider
triangulate his position'," said

Towles, "but the area they said he
could be in, encompassed roughly
one-quarter of the county.
"We then brought in Greg

McIntyre of the Civil Air Patrol
and volunteers, who used an
airplane owned by Don Asmus. We
contacted the Le,on County

Sheriffs Office which sent two
pilots and a helicopter.
"Division of Forestry also used
their plane to search for Mr. John

T., but they were having to look in
between spotting fires," Towles

'Chain reaction
A three-car crash on Highway 98 Wednesday morning resulted in no serious:injuries, although two individuals were-
transported for treatment. It appeared the crash was the result of a chain reaction: the van and car crashed into one another with
the resulting impact slamming the van into the back of a parked City of Perry maintenance;truck.

Earlier this week, the countdown began for, the start of the
2006 hurricane season, which is predicted to be a busy one.

The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) is predicting a very
active hurricane season for the
north Atlantic region and
Emergency Management Director
Brianne Hoover encourages
residents to "prepare now."
"For the 2006 north Atlantic
hurricane season, NOAA is
predicting 13 to 16 named storms,
with eight to 10 -becoming
hurricanes, of which four to six
could become 'major' hurricanes of
Category 3 strength or higher,"
said retired Navy Vice Adm.
Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D.,
under secretary of commerce for'
oceans and atmosphere and NOAA
administrator.
"Although NOAA is not
forecasting a repeat of last year's
season, the potential for hurricanes

striking the U.S. is high," added
Lautenbacher.
According to Hoover, "preparing
for a hurricane and taking action is
as easy as one-two-three.
"First, before hurricane season
starts, assemble your disaster
supply kit and write out your
family disaster plan," Hoover said.
"A guideline to help all families
with this can be found at
www.floridadisaster.org.
"Second, when a hurricane
watch is issued every family
should check their disaster supply
kit to make sure everything is in

working order and activate the
family disaster plan, especially
those actions that require extra
time such as .securing a boat or
anchoring lawn items."
When a hurricane warning is
issued, families should ready their
kit for use and be in the process of
completing any protective
measures and moving to their
predetermined safe location in the
home or 'community, she said.
Any questions about hurricane
preparedness can be directed the,
emergency management office at
838-3575.

For the second time in as many
)ears. Perry's Hampton Inn has
been named the number one
Hampton Inn in the world.
This ranking is based on scores
from guest satisfaction surveys and
scores on inspections by the Hilton
Hotel Corp., "Quality Assurance"
team.
Hampton Inn of Perry has been
named in the top five of the 1,350-
plus Hampton Inns worldwide
.since opening May 31, 2000.
General Manager David Dickson
said, "Our employees, Team Perry,
have set .the standard by which
other Hampton Inns are judged."
The award was presented -to

hotel officials last month at
Fiddler's Restaurant in
Steinhatchee by Hilton's Scott
Schrank, vice president for
hotel performance Hampton
brand.
Hilton provided limo service to
and from the restaurant, where
employees enjoyed a banquet in
their honor.
Schrank stated that, "When there
are discussions in Memphis
(corporate headquarters) of service
and exceeding expectations, the
Hampton Inn Perry, is often the
topic of conversation. Hilton Hotel
Corp. is extremely proud to have,
such a quality hotel and staff

associated with our company."'
When asked about the benefits
of being ranked number one,
Dickson said, "Guest satisfaction
results in loyalty to the Perry
Hampton and to the Hampton
brand in general. When we first
opened and went to the brand
'meeting where all Hampton Inn
owners and general managers meet
once a year, we were frequently
asked where Perry, Fla., was
located.
"Now we have the same people
coming to Perry to learn how we
do what we do. No one asks where
Perry is anymore," Dickson
added.

Keaton Beach

JFishing Report

_iHoliday busy at Keaton.

By PAT McGRIFF
One More Cast Guide Service
Well, Memorial Day came and
went and I can't say I enjoyed it,
nor that I wish to see it
again...hew what a pile of folks...
Besides every day is a "holiday"
Son board with me and my One
More Cast charters...anyway...we
have been catching some great fish
of late.
Bill Hagood and Buster Gill of
Jacksonville had 11 trout which
weighed :,23 pounds last
Wednesday. We were fishing with
live pinfish under Cajun Thunders
in 4-4.5 feet of water. We had
three fish over twenty and released
another one over 24-inches.
Natalie and Bryan Richardson of
SSouth Port, had nine trout,
with three over 20 inches long,
* and a 24-inch heavyweight, which
took a pinfish strip (shiner tail) to
anchor the string Thursday. Then
SFriday, the Richardsons fished
with me again and had 12 trout
with three over 21 inches long.
We fished live pinfish under 2.5-
inch oval Cajuns each day. We
caught" some of the larger trout in
3-3.5 feet of water right on top of
the high tide.
The west w-i-n-d made it tough
for some and difficult for most to
find and catch a limit over the
weekend. Some folks did much
better, Sunday, like Cal
Beanblossom and Ben Barbee,

Firas A. Hamdan, M.D.
Board Certified EN. T Physician

Dear Taylor County,
I have, long been afraid that such a time will come and I have to part with something I
care for this much. I am talking about the bond that was created and solidified here in
Perry, and Taylor County. This bond of friendship, fellowship and professionalism that
encompassed my stay here for the last nine and a half years. I have always thought of
such a time, but I never did believe it would actually get here. The day where I have to
part with my patients and friends and unfortunately, it has come precipitously and without
ample warning. Last May, I sent my family (Mona and my three boys) back to Lebanon so
they could get exposed to our culture, languages and get to know their extended family
including their grandparents and cousins. I have rationalized that while they are capturing
all these opportunities, I will be shuttling between here and there, taking care of both my
family and my patients.
Well, the year went by too fast for all of us, and one time it seemed I could do this for a
while longer, at least another year. However, three weeks ago I witnessed an incident
that made me wake up to face reality and brought tears to my eysfitl[witnessed a-father;
sitting at the feet of his son who had just undergone a surgical procedure and telling him,
"Don't worry son... Daddy is here beside you...I am waiting for you to wake up so we can
go out and play again..." At that moment, and in my mind and for just a split second, I
imagined the roles reversed and my son being the patient, but did not see myself (as the
father) at his bedside holding his feet and comforting him. I realized that I am 7,000 miles
away from my children. I thought that in case of an emergency, even if I wanted-o get on
the first available flight, I would be at least 24 hours away from them, and that may just be
too late.
"That night was an endless night for me. I had just realized that all the logic and all the
reasons I had for me to have spent a year away from my children were non-justifiable.
During this past year, I have been to many places and courses and acquired a lot of
expertise. I have traveled every single month of the year. My kids have gotten to know
both sides of their family, their cousins, and relatives, and now speak three different
languages. But if anyone asks me if it was worth the separation, my answer is simple...NO!
In retrospect, I regret every single moment I have been away from them. I wish I was
not that tough and rational to make that decision in the first place. But, it is never too late
to admit one's own mistake and try to correct it right away.
In light of these events, I want to address all of you, my patients, and tell them that I am
sorry to inform that I have decided to go back and join my wife and' kids. I am sure
everybody will understand my circumstances. I just feel lucky enough to be free and
willing to make such a decision and be able to carry it through. My heart goes out to our
military and National Guard troops or any professional who gets separated from their
families trying to protect this country, or'enhance the welfare of all of us. They are placed
in the most inconvenient and dangerous situations and may not even have the choice to
get reunited with their loved ones until their assignments are fulfilled. GOD BLESS ALL
OF THEM ANDALL OF OUR PRAYERS SHOULD GO TO THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES.
At this time, I would like to thank the people of Perry, Taylor County and the surrounding
counties for putting their trust in me. These last nine years have been very humbling to
me. At all times during my practice of medicine and surgery, I have put the well-being of
my patients first. I have sworn to treat every patient as my own family member. No one
deserves any less'than that. I have worked hard to bring state-of-the-art medical and
surgical skills to this area. But that was only achievable because of the trust of my
patients and their families in our abilities, in our practice and our local hospital, Doctors'
Memorial Hospital. I do thank all my patients and their families for allowing me to be a
part of their recovery and healing. If it was not for all of you, I would have packed and left
a long time ago.
I will not name any specific person here, fearing to omit anyone, but I confess that if it
was not for my second family (employees, friends, colleagues, health care professionals
and patients) here in Perry, I would not have been able to last this long.
I understand that this is not an easy decision, but this time I am listening to my heart. I
am going to be with my family. This is by no means an end to my practice which was built
based on premise of excellence in medical and surgical care. I am at this point (as of July
2006) taking ONE year leave of absence from my own practice. I will go home to my kids
and try to catch up on lost time and hopefully make a better decision for next year.
My practice, especially the allergy patients should not see any interruption in their weekly
care. The final details of coverage and arrangements are being worked out carefully and
the surgical coverage is also being finalized.
Once again, thank you all for allowing me to be a part of your lives. Thank you, Perry,
and thank you Taylor County and the surrounding counties.

Sincerely,

Firas A. Hamdan, MD, FAACS

Carnival Day to honor

McDonald on June 17
A Carnival Day at the Park is planned for Saturday, June 17, as a
community-wide expression of love for Jordan McDonald, the four-year-
old who is undergoing physical therapy following treatments for a brain
tumor.
"We want everyone to come to City Park between the hours of 2 and 4
p.m. to enjoy an inflatable slide and an obstacle course, as well as horse
rides and face painting," said Missy Gray who is helping to coordinate
this event in honor of McDonald.
"We love Jordan and thought this fun day could also be a fundraiser to
help with the family's many medical expenses," she said. Tickets will be
sold for the various booths and games, with all proceeds going to the
McDonald family. A raffle is also planned with United Welding allowing
the winner to select astool box 'from its inventory. ,
, "The fun continues thatevening, with Pizza Hut agreeing to donate 2Q
percent of all meals purchased from 5 and 7 p.m., to the:McDonalds," said
,Gray.

Parker Motor Company
In 1911, then-sheriff John H. "Bud" Parker opened a Ford dealership in Perry--one of the earliest dealerships in the state.
i "He started out with Model T's," his son, Dr. John Parker, recalled. For Parker, the car dealership was a natural progression
of-business with the times: prior to the car business, he owned and operated a livery stable. The dealership was first located on
H North Jefferson Street, in the building which most recently housed Wells Jewelers. It later moved to a. new building on Drew
g'Street, which was built in 1925. This rare photo of the former car dealership was recently discovered by local history buff
"Melba Denmark, who was able to identify only one -of the men shown--her husband's uncle, William J. "Bill" Denmark (far.
right). If you can identify any of the men in the picture, please contact Perry Newspapers, Inc., at (850) 584-5513.
