'Our Town' makes

debut in 2 weeks

The debut for. "Our Town:
Perry," a documentary about the
people,,places and happenings in
Perry "as seen through the eyes of
those who live there" is fast
approaching.
"Our Town" is a WFSU PBS
series that showcases small towns
by having local residents film their
own short documentaries.
Producer Suzanne Smith and her
crew visited with volunteers in
June helping them choose their
topics and giving them tips for
working with their camcorders.

They returned two weeks later to
interview each participant. Footage
from the interviews was then
edited into the shorts.
In all, 14 people or groups
filmed shorts about a wide variety
of topics around Perry and Taylor
County.

Funding remains on

hold for non-profits
Local civic and community organizations--promised funding from any
"surplus" money in the city's 2004-05 budget--continue to await news from
City Hall.
Nearly two months into its 2005-06 budget cycle, the groups have not,
received word on how much, if any, surplus remains from the city's '
previous year budget (which ended Sept. 30).
City Finance Director Penny Staffney said Tuesday her office was
continuing to work on closing out the 2004-05 budget.
"I still haven't gotten all the accruals done yet; by law, I have until about
mid-January to get all that done before the state gets its financial report.
(Former city manager) Bill Brynes used to do this and I'm having to come
in and figure it all out," she said.
In September, the council voted 4-1 to utilize "cash carry forward"
monies to meet nearly a dozen requests made by local non-
profit/community groups.. -
As it stands, "the city has n.t given us any funding and we have no word
on when orif we will be getiany funding at all. They (individual council
members) K ve assured us tlhy haveI plans for us in the future, but as far
as this year, they have no-plns to fund us," Boys & Girls Club Director
Kevin Kidd said.

Boyd was instrumental in getting
legislation passed to designate
eight additional state enterprise
zones for net ban-affected
communities, with Taylor County
being one.
"The zone is basically a way for
businesses to recoup sales tax paid
on building materials and business
equipment," said Olson. "It can
also be used to generate a job tax
credit, again taken against sales tax
or Florida corporate taxes paid."
The FEZP was enacted to
provide companies who are willing
to invest, in "productive business
enterprises located in severely
distressed areas, with appropriate
tax benefits and regulatory relief,"
added Olson.

Local businesses which have
used the program to date include
RDS, American Aluminum,
Buckeye, Gilman Building
Products, Consolidated Forest
Products, Winn Dixie, Foodland,
Citizens Bank, Capital City Bank,
Sport-Craft, Tom's Foods, CDI,

FWC biologists Jason Pike and
Dan McDonald received another
late night call Sunday of a 325 lb.
bear which had been hit on Hwy.
19, near Tennille. That bear also
died from injuries received in the
incident.
"Bears are on the move now,
eating and trying to find a place for
them to lay up," said Granthum.
"We ask that motorists really be on
the look-out for the animals,
especially at night. They are dark
colored and hard to see, especially
at night.
"Don't let their size fool you,
either," he added. "They are quick
when they want to be, so they can
dart out in front of you. We just
want people to know that they are
on the move and there are probably
more bears in this county than
people realize.

From.hiring a new administrator
to approving a new fee schedule
for building permits, Tuesday
proved to be a productive night for
the Perry City Council.
S.Members formally approved
hiring Bob Brown as city manager
and look to ink a final employee
contract within the next week. His
first day on the job will be
Monday, Dec. 12.
The council also gave a
unanimous vote to raise its
building permit fees and bring the
schedule in line with what the
county currently charges for the
same permits. The new fee
schedule will go into effect Jan. 1,
2006.
Councilman Don Cook gave a
brief update on talks to consolidate
city and county animal control
departments.
"Our committee is prepared to
present what we've done at the
next joint meeting of the city and
"county, whenever we can get that
scheduled," Cook said, "As I
understood it, our mission was to
come with a plan of what it would
look like and what we would save
if both councils decided to
combine those, departments."

Academic team places

fourth in NFCC tourney

The Taylor County High
School academic team placed
fourth last week at a tournament
held at North Florida Community
College.
During regular play the team
went 4-1, defeating teams from
Wakulla, Madison, Suwannee and
Aucilla high schools.
Gerard Massey, Tim Machula,
Jordan Robertson, Rachel
Heartsfield and Nafecs .Khan
competed. Megan Perry, Natalie .
York and Bonnie Batson also

traveled.
In the first round, Taylor faced
Wakulla 'II, defeating them in a
close game 85-75. In round two,
they shut out Madison II 40-0, and
in round three they defeated
Branford II 180-30.
The team fell 95-50 to Aucilla
II, but came back after lunch to
defeat Branford II 125-20 in round
five.
Their 4-1^ record sent them to
the playoffs to face Wakulla II,
who defeated Taylor 220-120.

The NFCC tournament was the
first of the season for the team.
Next on the schedule is University
of Florida's fall tournament Dec. 2
and 3.
"The kids did great," said Coach
Mark Viola. "It's been awhile
since our last tournament and I
was afraid we might have some
rust, but they didn't show any.
"UF's tournament in December
is always a great tournament to-go
,to and last we heard they were
expecting more than 60 teams."

ENTERPRISE ZONE

individuals doing home
renovations or new construction
located in the zone.
Olson said that Taylor County
receives more state incentives than
"most rural counties and a lot of
highly populated counties."
To date, the state has designated

53 enterprise zones.
The county is currently
considering making application to
the Governor's' office to
redesignate the zone for another
ten ,years (required by state
legislation). A strategic plan was
required and developed for the first
designation and public hearings
were held 'for areas to be included
in the zone. An Enterprise Zone
Development Agency, appointed
by the Taylor County Board,of

County Commissioners is the
group which manages zone policy,
with Olson serving as zone
coordinator.
Workshops are 'held, at the
Perry/Taylor County Chamber of
Commerce month for those
interested in finding out how to
take advantage of zone incentives,
determining eligibility ,and the
application process.
For more information,, please

;Plugs working on trout
"AM

By PAT McGRIFF
One More Cast Guide Service
I guess everybody will be eating
left-over turkey and watching
:'football this weekend...but some
of us have to...FISH!
Last week, Billy Pillow, Dave
Malone and I went out Wednesday,
around 12:30 and got a limit of
trout and reds which were
impressive. We caught them all
on jerkbaits, both soft and
hard...right! Dave fished with!
Edge's Shadee shad, fluke baits for
our trout and reds; while Billy
stayed with the plugs the whole
time, I did both, yet fished with
Assassins pink flukes to land my
one trout and one red on soft baits.
Dave caught the balance of reds
S except a larger one, 26 inches
long, I caught on a gold Bomber
Long A. Billy got the most big
trout on plugs, as we threw back
six over 22 inches long!

Deer herd

is healthy
Florida's deer herd reveals no
signs of chronic wasting disease
(CWD) after three years of testing
for the fatal .disease, according to
the Florida Fish, and Wildlife
Conservation Commission
(FWC). The FWC tested 558 free-
ranging deer during the past year
and more than 1,800 deer over the
past three years, and none tested
. positive for CWD.
CWD is. a progressive,
neurological, debilitating disease
that has been detected in and
affects captive and wild herds of
mule deer, white-tailed deer and
Rocky 'Mountain elk in several
Midwestern and western states. It
; afiacks the brain of infected
animals, causing them to become
emaciated, display abnormal
behavior and lose control of bodily
functions. No southeastern states,
including. Florida, have been hit
by the lethal deer disease thus far.
More information on CWD is
available at MyFWC.com/CWD.
The Web site, also provides links
to human and wildlife health
agencies for more in-depth
information about the deadly
disease.

Clayton signs baseball deal

Sunday, Randy, Margie and
Dewey Bright of Valdosta, Ga.,
had their limit of trout fishing
with lipped jerkbaits in 2 feet of
water. The Brights had two fish
over 23 inches long.
Billy Pillow and I fished
Sunday, for about four hours, and
brought in 10 trout which weighed
23.5 pounds! We caught all of
them, but one, on plugs. I had to
throw the pink .Assassin soft fluke
(five inch shad) and land the last
keeper. We, again, threw back four
fish over 23 inches long as we had
two over 20 including a four-and-
a-half-pound fish (Billy caught
this 26-inch trout, while trying to
land a 10-inch long trout which
hit the plug first) in the first drift.
The big trout either wanted the
plug real bad or wanted to eat the
little trout and I netted them both
at once!
Mickey Wheeler and' Terry
Haney and one more ( I don't
know who) had a .blast Sunday
morning and threw back untold
bunches of trout on their way to
limiting out while plug fishing.
Mickey and Debbie Wheeler
also limited out Saturday, on
plugasas well. The Wheelers are
now, once again, from
Thomasville, Ga.,
Gus Powell and Craig Bozeman
of Griffin, Ga., came down and
fished Monday morning...UGH!!
They had a. limit by 11 a.m and
went home rather than stay 'til
Wednesday as they usually do.
Guess 25 -35 knot w-i-n-d-s are a
bit much. This duo was throw mng
plugs like they always do.
No one has been offshore
lately...so lookout if it happens
to lay down one of these days.

Canine Companions graduates Warren

Warren III, now 2, recently graduated froin Canine Companions for
Independence as a skilled companion, and his trainer, Connie Spees of
Perry, couldn't be happier.
"This is the first dog I've had to graduate and I'm so proud of him," said
Spees. Warren is now part of the Zieper family in South Florida (mother
and daughter shown in picture), as a companion to the daughter who has
cerebral palsy. The Spees went to graduation ceremonies andthen dinner
with the Ziepers.
"The little girl was afraid of dogs initially but Warren's gentleness and
quietness really won her over," said Spees, who is currently training her
fourth dog, Rachel.
Warren is a golden retriever/yellow lab mix, and was a frequent visitor
to local stores in the community as well as an "honorary member" of the
Perry Woman's Club.

Steinhatchee salutes

River Fest volunteers'

By Rhoda Moehring
Chairman
Steinhatchee Community Projects
Board, Inc.
Our Steinhatchee River Festival
enjoyed a great day with wonderful
food and a variety of crafts.
Clint Wilson was the winner of
the River Run Poker Run, which
was officiated by Andy and Linda
Johnson, Paula and Larry Fritcher,
and Shari Powell.
Our ducks left the Quack
Stables paddling hard, with the
winning duck being plucked from
the tide by Allen Fink and John
Glass. Peggy Glass turned in the
winning number and Sue Ellen
Bobalik took home the $192
prize.
We extend thanks to
Commissioner Clay Bethea's
family for returning the ducks to
the stable. We would also like to
thank those who lent their helping
hands as volunteers, as well as our
Steinhatchee Communit% Proijecs.
Board members
The American Legion provided
all with cold drinks and the
Steinhatchee Garden Club's cake
walk entertained us.
Some delicious cakes left each
time the music stopped. Ann Bo.
and her crew of Steinhatchee's best
cooks served up lunch. Venera
Williams came out of retirement
and made funnel cakes for our daN
in the park--a treat for all.
Eldon Sadler led us with music
and entertainment for the day as
only he can and our thanks go out
to him.
Parking was limited at the park
and we thank B.R. and .Tina
Barnett, and Ramona Griner, for
allowing us to use their property
to accommodate our festival
visitors. Without this very critical
donation to the festival, we would
not have been able to
accommodate the number of
guests who enjoyed the day.
Steinhatchee Community
Projects Board, Inc., is pleased to
have sponsored the first
Steinhatchee River Festival. The
board also sponsored Fiesta in the
Park for many years, as well as.
the Race & Taste of Steinhatchee
and the annual Steinhatchee
Fishing Tournament held annually
in March.
This board oversees the

Community Center building and
Steinhatchee Park, providing
man\a of the improvements to this.
faciliis. It also provides
scholarship programs for
Steinhatchee and Jena students.
The board is active in activities at
Steinhatchee School, along with
other community events and
requests. The board consists of
executive officers, members at-
large and the presidents of each of
the civic organizations in
Steinhatchee. These include
AARP President Bud Shassere,
American Legion Commander
Don Howell, Beta Sigma Phi
President Doris Bishop, PTO
President Melissa Morgan and Fire
& Rescue Director Brian Goddard.

PERRY HOUSEWIVES
KILL 10 1/2 POUND TURKEY
Two Perry housewives had a 10
and one-half pound turkey for their
-,Thanksgiving table as a result of
taking a dare from their husbands,
who told them, "you're no hunters."
The two women, Mrs. Carol
Connell, 19, and Mrs. Patricia
Whiddon, 17, said, "We told them
when we left Monday morning that
we were going to show them!"
And show them they did!'
Hunting below the Martin's Lake

farm,, just off Puckett Road, the
two women spotted a big turkey
hen and Mrs. Connell shot at it,
wounding the bird in one wing
with, a charge of No. 6 shot from
her .410 gauge shotgun.
"It went to flopping and flying
all over the place," said Mrs.
Whiddon. "It scared Carol so bad,
she handed me the gun."
Mrs. Whiddon then dispatched
the bird with a well-placed head
shot.
The two women were exuberant
as they described their hunting
adventure.
"We were only going squirrel
' hunting," they said, "but now we're
so happy we hardly talk. Our

HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION
CHALLENGES COST FIGURES,
Petitions said to contain more
than 2,000 names, demanding an
investigation of conditions .at
Doctors' Memorial Hospital. and
the removal of hospital
Administrator James D. Arnold,
were filed in the office of Gov.
Claude R. Kirk Jr., and were being
studied by advisors to the
governor.
As the hospital controversy
continued to simmer, a statement
was released to show that hospital
costs at DMH were markedly
higher than at. other hospitals in the
area.
According to the report, daily
hospital care at Live Oak cost
$47.50; at Madison, $54.39; and at
DMH, $74.51.
Arnold refuted the report,
saying, "This is exactly the same as
saying that a pound of meat in one
town would cost 39 cents and the
next town, 69 cents, and the next
town $1.19, without saying that in
one case the meat was the neck
bone, and the other it was
hamburger and the other, it was
steak."

CARTOON SHOW SET
The Toys for Tots campaign
received a big boost as the Temple -
Theatre hosted a Giant Cartoon
Carnival with all proceeds going to
the local drive to furnish Christmas
toys to underprivileged children.
Campaign Chairman Mrs.
Conrad Williams said David E.
Harris, owner and operator of the
Temple Theatre, .called and
volunteered to host the Cartoon
Carnival for Toys for Tots. She said
admission would be the donation
of a new toy, valued at $1 or more.
No tickets would be sold.
All toys were turned over to the
campaign and then given to needy
families to insure a happy

Christmas for Taylor County kids.
