Secondary BRMC Road

Could Begin in March

Construction of the long-
awaited secondary entrance into
Bartow Regional Medical Center
could begin in March of next
year, with completion six months
later.
Ron Cauthan of the Chastain-
Skillman engineering firm told
city commissioners that his firm
began design work on the
planned extension of North
Wilson Avenue from the Old
Eagle Lake Road to BRMC in the
third quarter of 2005.
While designated as a sec-
ondary entrance, it is widely
believed that most staff and
patients will use this road as
their primary route to the hospi-
tal, avoiding the dangerous
entrance on U.S. Highway 98.
Included in the design will be
three-laning of the Old Eagle
Lake Road from Highway 98 to
Wilson, Cauthan said. The
Wilson Avenue intersection will
have a traffic light and turn
lanes.
Cauthan said the firm expects

to advertise for bids in January,
and to have all permits in hand
by February, clearing the way for
construction to begin in March.
In other business, the commis-
sion:
Rescheduled its Jan. 1 meet-
ing for Jan. 2.
Appointed Kenneth Meeks
to the water conservation com-
mittee.
Approved an amendment to
the 2006-07 city budget.
Heard Gerald Cochran, a
frequent critic of city govern-
ment, give his annual evaluation
of city officials, ranging from his
10th consecutive minus-10 for
City Mgr. Joseph J. DeLegge to a
plus-8.5 for City Clerk Linda
Culpepper. This year Cochran
also gave a score to city commis-
sioners: a plus-5.5, "mostly for
attendance."
Designated Commissioner
Leo Longworth to recommend
someone for appointment to the
Bartow Housing Authority.

MARY, JOSEPH and the baby Jesus have returned to county ing. This year, after a request was made to place a scene in

one tiny reindeer. Two years ago the county was deluged with ques- 3-2 vote, but mandated the display also must include secular charac-
tionable holiday decorations after First Baptist displayed a small ters. IStaff photo by Dawn Wade'

Homeless Hitchhiker Reveals True

Meaning Of The Christmas Season

By PHILIP PETTUS
For The Democrat

The Christmas wheel had
again spun' too fast and
Christmas Eve had dawned.
catching me unready and almost
unwilling to get on for the ride.
The sting of chilled air was
becoming colder in Lake Wales in
1984. The morning passed into
noon and the predicted cold front
banded the northern sky with its
dark clouds. The front moved far-
ther south and the day was
glooming from slightly sunny to
gray.
After rushing through wife-
inspired chores. I left home at 1
o'clock. realizing that I only had a
few hours to get to the stores and
buy some gifts for my children
and wife, a venture I had
repressed until I could repress it
no more.
So as I entered the highway
near my home. I was in a
quandary as to what I would buy.
I had $130 cash in my wallet and
in my shirt pocket I counted
another $33 as I drove.
Maybe I could buy a toy uf
some sort for Mary, my eight-
year-old. But what do eight-year-
old girls want? I should have been
paying more attention. Now
Patrick. he's a fan of Bo and Luke
Duke, those country boys on tele-
vision. A toy version of that
orange Charger would suit him. if
there are any left on the shelves.
Darn it. I thought I should
have done this weeks ago. God
knows I have this serious mental
condition that makes me avoid
long lines in five-acre stores while
listening to cheap music makers
and battery-powered noises. I
really hate walking through and
waiting in line in the huge empo-
riums where they sell such items
that children are taught to crave
at Christmas..
:Now for my wife, surely that
would be, easy. A bottle of per-,
fume, a necklace or a lacv house
robe. I'll get hers last. It'" blinding
something for the kid- fiiirt: that's
the tough job. Let. me get them
out of the way -.1. then I'll just
zip into dalaaa Brothers anrd do the
perfume thing.
Thus, while cruising on the

highway at a moderate speed. I
was visualizing the afternoon's.
activities. Daddy plays Santa
Claus, I thought. Never mind that
everyone else in our extended
family had already played Santa
Claus for this family. I had to
have my Santa Claus ticket
punched. too.
The temperature seemed to be
dropping more and I rolled up my
windows. I thought it might snow
like it did in 1977.
I decided to head toward
Lakeland. where more and bigger
opportunities for buying abound-
ed. I took the next highway ramp
and headed 'round the cloverleaf'
toward Bartow. Just as I was
crossing the overpass and began
entering the main lane on the
highway. I noticed him ahead.
He was a smiling, dark-com-
plexioned. black man standing on
the roadside with a worn satchel
and big piece of white canvass at
his feet. He wasn't using his
thumb, like most hitchhikers did.
He was just standing there, smil-
ing big.
Rather than 'speeding up and
moving into the fast lane. I pulled
to the right and slowed down,
stopping about 30 yards past him
on the road shoulder. I popped the
horn but it wasn't necessary. He
had already turned and was car-.
rying his gear with him in pur-
suit.
When he got up to the door, he
opened it, leaned down and said,
politely and formally, "Sir, I'm
going to Tampa, could you give
me a ride in that. direction?"
"Sure. Get in. Put your stuff in.
the back seat."
As he got in the front seat,. I
noticed a book in his hands. He
was still smiling and he exuded
friendship and appreciation and
cheer all on a cold and busy
afternoon.
"It's really getting' cold out
thbre. You came along jus' in
time," he said. His smile and
laugh put me immediately at'
ease.
He told me he was going to the'
"mission" in downtown Tampa.
He had an address written on a
scrap of paper.
S"I'll take you as far as I can
befo;re- I have to,turn off to go to

Lakeland." I said.
"T'hat would be ius' fine. Sir."
he said. And he opened his book,
which was a Bible. The cover was
so worn it was no longer black but
merely the gray cardboard under-
neath with a few spots of black on
it.
"The Apostle Paul tells us 'All
things work together for good to
them that love God. to them who
are the called according to His
purpose.' I'll he happy to go as far
as you take me." His smile was
genuine and his voice was hum-
ble. but he had a way of slightly
laughing that gave me a sense
that he was a wise and happy per-
son. dressed in the clothes of
humility.
"I'm a traveling preacher of the
word of God." Sure you are. I mut-
tered under my breath, still a lit-
tle skeptical.
He said he had been in the
area a few days andhad to pick
oranges to pay his way.
"I had to buy this picker's bag
so I could earn me some money."
Even with a few dirt stains on
it, the big white canvas bag still
looked practically new.
He said that after spending a
few nights sleeping under an
overpass, the cold weather was
becoming too much for him, so he
was headed to a mission in
Tampa. where he hoped to get a
shower and a warm bed. Someone
had told him about the mission
and he had phoned to be sure he
could stay there, he said.
"I have been preachin' the word
of God and the gospel of Jesus
Christ," he said. Referring to his
coworkers of the past couple of
days, he said he preached for sev-
eral nights but had little success
convincing most of them to give
up their wine and other vices. He
wasn't giving up; just getting out
of the cold.
"Just like it says in Kings," and
then he read from his weathered
Bible, "And Elijah came unto all
the people, and said, How long
halt ye between two opinions? If
the Lord'be God, follow him: but if
Baal, then follow him. And, the
people answered him not a word."
Once again he smiled arid he
spoke with great self-assurance.
His speech was not grammatical-

ly perfect but was easily under-
stood and disarmingly friendly.
Before I realized it, I had cov-
ered the 15 miles to Bartow. I sup-
posed to myself I would give him
the,$33 in-my shirt pocket and let
him out to catch another ride
toward Tampa. But being cheered
by his joyous attitude and not
wanting to turn him out so soon, I
said, "I'm not going to drop you off
here: I'll take you on another
eight miles to Mulberry. I can
catch the highway up to Lakeland
from there."
As we drove on, our conversa-
tion resumed, with him telling me
about his mission without really
telling me who he was. I won-
dered if he was an ex-offender. He
said he was just out on the road
"doing the Lord's work, letting
God take care of me, as He choos-
es."
Eight miles were covered in
eight minutes and I still felt like
we weren't finished talking and
sharing thoughts.
'What's your name?" I finally
asked.
"Wesley," he said.
"My name is Philip; good to
meet you, Wesley." We shook
hands. He grinned.
Back when Wesley first got in
the car, I sort of thought of myself
as his rescuer and being the
host of the trip I felt it was my
job to spiritually lift him up. But
as we conversed more and more
and as I heard him speak with
such faith and confidence, I felt
compelled to keep heading toward
Tampa, learning and being
blessed by his good cheer.
"I have decided that I am going
to take you on to Tampa to the
mission. I know Tampa and I can
take you right where you want to
go," I told him. I was thinking
that I could still catch Interstate
4 and get back to Lakeland in no
time and I would still have a few
hours to shop when I got back.
I kept asking questions and
Wesley kept giving me glimpses of
his life. It was more .about his
traveling around, "witnessing" to
others and doing day labor jobs
and living from place to place. He
was from Texas, he said. His only
family was his mother.
As we approached Tampa, I

realized that we had not dis-
cussed Christmas at all. But as
we passed an auto dealer's bill-
board in Brandon, with a picture
of a car with a bow on top, I was
reminded of my previous task
that made me wonder how this
Christmastime gift issue played
with an itinerant preacher.
"Wesley, tell me something.
What do you think of all this gift-
giving and all the other images
you see at Christmastime?"
"Do you mean Santa Claus and
all those presents and things?"
"Yes," I said.
"I forsook that a long time ago.
It makes no difference in my life.
That's not what Christmas is
about," he said. "The only gift
that matters is Christ... Those
Santa Claus gifts mean nothing
when compared to God's gift... I
don't give'em no attention. I don't
miss'em," he said.
As we neared downtown
Tampa, I asked him to read the
mission's address again. As we
headed toward the mission, I told
Wesley I was going to give him
some money and I wanted him to
use some of the money to phone
his mother as soon as he could.
I'll give him another $20 so
he'll have about 50 bucks in his
pocket, I reasoned. As I drove
around in downtown Tampa, our
conversation ended for a few min-
utes whileI got my orientation to

Bartow's traditional New

Christmas trees go up in a blaze
of glory, will be pushed forward to
Friday, Dec. 29, this year.
The event will begin at 6:30
p.m., and will be held at the south
end of Mary Holland Park.
This year's event was moved
forward two days because New
Year's Eve comes on a Sunday,

for-life of the event.

In a few minutes, I parked in a
space near our destination where
I luckily found a spot with time
left on a meter. As I got out of the
car and walked around to shake
his hand and give him the money,
my money plans were instanta-
neously altered.
Instead of the $33 in my shirt
pocket, I took all the money from
my wallet, folded it in half and
gave it to Wesley.
Without counting it, he looked
me in the eye, looked at the
money and then starting grinning
and praising.
"Thank you, Jesus. Thank you,
Jesus," he said. He then hugged
me and he kept grinning and
laughing.
"Thank you, Jesus. Thank you,
Jesus."
"Don't forget to phone your
mother and tell her you are all
right," I said as I opened the dri-
ver's door to my car.
"Hey Philip, I will do that,
soon." He then turned and started
toward the front door of the mis-
sion as the cold wind picked up.
He spontaneously offered his can-
vas bag to another man headed in
the same direction. "Hey. You
want this?"

I chuckled loudly in my car as
I drove off.
Driving back to Lakeland on
Interstate 4, I kept thinking
about what had happened over
the past hour and how much I
had been blessed. I drove right on
through Lakeland and back'

Yes, I started out thinking:I

But as things-turned out, he was

4 The Polk County Democrat Dec. 25, 2006

As we reflect on our blessings, tangible
and intangible, at Christmas 2006, we note
the passing into obscurity of the Wonder
Toy of the 1980s.
Video cassette recorders, those mar-
velous machines that brought movies into
our living rooms for a couple of bucks and
allowed those with VCR camcorders to
become amateur movie producers, are fad-
ing from the scene.
At their zenith, VCRs peaked at 88.6 per-
cent household penetration in 1999.
They are rapidly being replaced by DVD
players, which play digital video disks that
are more durable, more permanent, and
less expensive than VCR cassettes.
On the market for less than 10 years,
DVDs surpassed VCRs in the third quarter
of 2006, when they were found in 81.2 per-
cent of American households, while VCRs
dropped to 79.2 percent.
And the newest Wonder Toy is the digi-
tal video recorder, the most popular being
TiVo, that records pre-selected shows,
pauses shows being broadcast live, and
allows the viewer to control his own
instant replay of such historic events as the
Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction."
DVRs are now found in 16.9 percent of
American homes, and that figure was
before Christmas morning.
We can still remember when families
gathered around an AM radio, when few
homes had television. AM and FM have
survived, even in an age of television, con-
founding pundits who thought that each
new electronic medium would replace the
one that preceded it.
On the other hand, eight-track cassettes
and quadraphonic sound enjoyed only
brief popularity.

Will DVDs go the route of VCRs? Will
TiVo be the quadraphonic flash-in-the-pan
of the early 2000s?
Will home theater systems be replaced
by some yet-to-be-invented device that
will pop popcorn and drench it in butter
for the ultimate home movie viewing
experience?
Who's to say?
But this wonderful season, the days just
before and after Christmas,, give cause not
only for religious renewal to many, but an
occasion to reflect on our greatest bless-
ings.
Those are the blessings which arrive not
in gift boxes but in diapers, in jeans and
Tee-shirts, in automobiles, and in air-
planes.
The Christmas season is a time to cele-
brate the blessings of family and friends in
a festive atmosphere of both religious and
secular joy, as we approach the sense of
renewal that comes with the arrival of the
New Year.
Gadgets don't last; friends and family
do.

THINKING OUT LOUD / By S. L. FRISBIE, IV

Santa? Absolutely!

Gadgets Come and Go;

Family and Friends Last

Few indeed are the American
columnists, famous or obscure,
who have not at one time or
another wished that little Virginia
had written to them instead of
the New York Sun with her clas-
sic question: "Is there a Santa
Claus?"
While most of us probably
would have been afraid to
answer it at the time,' we've all:
thought how w\e might have gone
about it.
A few cynics would have
snarled: "Of course there is no
Santa Claus. He's just an inven-
tion of people who still believe in
something for nothing."
But Virginia's letter was guid-
ed to the hands of a more sensi-
tive writer. The reply is perhaps
the third most famous piece of
Christmas journalism ever writ-
tern, after the Christmas stories
chronicled by Matthew and Luke.
Still, there persists the wish
that I could have gotten
Virginia's letter. Sometimes at
Christmas, I wonder how I
would have replied ...

:Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa
Claus.
Your little friends have made
you unhappy by telling you there
is not, but it is really they who are
unhappy, for they have lost a lit-
tle of the faith of childhood.
Some of my friends say there is
no God, and they're grown-ups,;
and ought to know better. It is
sad that they have lost their faith,
not because I believe them, but
because they believe themselves.
You know, Virginia, God and
Santa Claus have a lot in com-

mon.
When we, are very young, our
parents tell us that God is a per-
son like you and me, with a head,
two arms, two legs. And they say
he lives in Heaven a place high
in the sky and sits on a throne
of gold.
Is that the way Heaven really
is? I don't know; I've never been
there. But I do. know there is a
God and a Heaven.
SWhen we are very young, we
cannot understand ideas like a
God who exists but not in human
form, or a Heaven that exists but
ndt in the form of a beautiful city.
So our parents and Sunday
school teachers and .preachers.
describe God and Heaven in a
way we can understand.
Santa Claus is a lot like that,.
Virginia.
When we are very young, we
are told that Santa Claus is.-a
chubby old fellow .-who wears a
red suit and lives at the: North
Pole where he has a toy shop.
And we are told that on
Christmas Eve, after we :are
sound asleep, he flies over all the
world in his sleigh, leaving pre-
sents for all the children.
Is there really a Santa Claus
who looks like that and lives at
the North Pole? I couldn't say, for
I have never been there. But I do
know that there is a Santa Claus.
SHe lives in the hearts of chil-
dren, and of their parents. and
grandparents and uncles and
aunts and just about everybody.
You wonder if the man in the
red suit ringing a bell on a.street
corner or riding a fire truck or
coming to town in a helicopter or

sitting in a department store is
really Santa Claus. And if so, how
can he get all his toys ready in
time?
Well the way I look at it, these
people are sort of like the preach-
ers in our churches. They are not
God; they are 'His helpers. They
help us understand who God is
andhow He wants us to live. But
just because they are not God
does not mean there is no God.
And that's the way it is with
the Santa Clauses we see on the
streets and in the stores and at the
parties at Christmas time. They
are Santa's helpers, who help us
understand the excitement of the
season and the joy of giving as
we celebrate the birthday of
Jesus.
But just because they are not
the real Santa Claus does not
mean there is no Santa Claus.
I cannot see God the way I can
see you or my own children and
little grandsons, yet I know that
God exists, because I can see
what He has done in our world.
I have never seen Santa Claus
come down my chimney, either,
but when I hear people wishing a
Merry Christmas to strangers and
sending cards to friends they
haven't seen for years and giving
money to charity ... and most of
all, when I see the face of a little
child light up with joy on
Christmas morning . then I
know there is a Santa Claus.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa
Claus. In a lot of ways, he's very
much like God.
In fact, I think Santa Claus
works for God.
