Maximus' hands and feet moved swiftly, his eyes
bright and forehead glistening with the sweat of con-
centration.
The sound of the music and the audience's cheers
only increased the intensity of his steps.
Charles Lee, known as "Maximus" to his fraternity
brothers, was the coordinator of the 26th annual Blue
and White Weekend Ultimate Step Show Friday in the
Reitz Union Amphitheater.
The event was hosted by UF's chapter of Phi Beta
Sigma Fraternity, a traditionally black organization.
The weekend's events included a step show, movie
G rek night, parties and a comedy show.
Life Participation in the step show was limited
-- to members of Phi Beta Sigma, known as
Sigmas, and their sister organization, Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority, known as Zetas.
Seven groups competed for the first-place trophy.
Performances were judged based on the reaction
of the crowd of more than 1,000 people, said Lee, an
anthropology junior.
A team from Miami consisting of members of
Florida Memorial University's Sigmas and Zetas won
first place.
During their routine, one performer hoisted his
fraternity brother onto his shoulders and continued to
step. The audience roared enthusiastically.
Lee's team, consisting of members of UF's Sigmas
and Zetas, did not compete, he said. They performed
because it is tradition for the host chapter to open the
event.
Lee said he's normally a shy person, but he has

Profs head

to Beijing

By KRISTEN HUFF

Today, two UF professors will leave
on a mission to extend The Gator
Nation to Beijing, China, as volunteers
for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
James Zhang and Daniel
Connaughton were selected by the
International Olympic Committee in
April to work as volunteers during
the games, which begin Aug. 8 and
end Aug. 24.
Both professors teach in the College
of Health and Human Performance's
Department of Tourism, Recreation
and Sport
Management.
Connaughton,
who has a back-
ground both as a
swimmer and a man-
ager in swiunmming
Connaughton competitions, will
manage the training
facility for the U.S. men's and wom-
en's swimming and diving teams.
Zhang, who played professional
basketball in China for a year before
moving to the U.S. more than 20 years
ago, will help manage the men's bas-
ketball training facility where the U.S.
and Chinese teams will practice.
The two left on a 15-hour flight
from Washington, D.C., early this
morning.
Zhang said he thinks they were
picked because of UF's exchange
program with Tsinghua University in
Beijing, a relationship that began three
years ago.
Like UF, Tsinghua has an impres-
sive sports management program,
Zhang said. Olympic athletes will
practice at the university's sports
facilities while the games are going
on, and many of its faculty members
are volunteers and staff members, he
said.

Fire forces evacuation at apartment complex

* SMALL FIRE LIKELY
CAUSED BY DISCARDED
CIGARETTE BUTTS.

No one was injured in a
fifth-floor fire at College Manor'
Apartments that led police to block
off parts of Southwest Second
Avenue on Monday.

Residents of the fourth and fifth
floors were evacuated, and apart-
ment maintenance workers put out
the flames with a fire extinguisher
before .rescue workers arrived
around 4:30 p.m.
Three Gainesville Fire Rescue
trucks arrived at the apartment
complex at 1216 SW Second Ave.

The fire, located in apartment and most of the residents' belong-

146, did not spread to any other
units, said District
Local Fire Chief Jeff Lane.
News Lane said the fire
was probably caused
by discarded cigarette
butts in a trash bag in the kitchen.
No one was home at the time,

ings were destroyed, he said.
"But we did save their pit bull,
Deuce," Lane said.
Neighbor Patricia Lopez, who
sat outside the building holding her
passport and purse, said she called
police after she saw smoke seeping
under the door.

Lopez's husband, Ronald
Gonzalez, who was seated next to
her outside the building with their
laptop and family documents, said
they grabbed everything they could
before leaving.
Residents were told to return to
their apartments at 5 p.m.

Pre-med curriculum may be revamped for relevance

By KRISTEN HUFF
Alligator Writer

Pre-med students questioning the need for
a second semester of organic chemistry might
be surprised to find that some medical school
administrators are wondering the same thing.
Dr. Jules Dienstag, dean of medical edu-
cation at Harvard Medical School, called for
a reform of the pre-med curriculum and
medical school admissions requirements in
a Thursday editorial in the New England
Journal of Medicine.

Dienstag wrote that current curriculum
models often focus on topics far-removed
from human biology, taking time from more
relevant courses.
Dr. Richard Davidson, a professor in UF's
College of Medicine and chairman of the
college's curriculum committee, said medical
school curricula will be changing nationwide
and may require students to know basic sci-
ences before being admitted, meaning pre-
med courses will have to cover them.
As it is now, not all medical schools require
biochemistry prior to admission, so it has to be

taught at the graduate level, Davidson said.
UF requires it for admission.
"It's the first course that really
challenges them."
Tammy Davidson
faculty coordinator of the UF organic chemis-
try laboratory program

Dienstag wrote that instead of spending a
second semester in organic chemistry, schools
should teach a sequence of organic chemistry

and an introduction to biochemistry.
If Dienstag's ideas go into effect, medical
schools across the country would have to
coordinate their admission requirements and
pre-med programs to ensure clarity, he said.
Tammy Davidson, faculty coordinator of
the organic chemistry laboratory program,
said she worries about condensing two semes-
ters' worth of organic chemistry into one.
Davidson said because of the course's rigor,
it teaches students critical-thinking skills.
"It's the first course that really challenges
them," she said.

UF students fly in Tampa Bay Flugtag competition

* THEY SPENT TWO
MONTHS ON THEIR DESIGN.

By ZAHARA ZAHAV
Alligator Writer

As the music pounded and
the team raced, so did John
Bornberg's heart.
The blond, sunburned UF engi-
neering student struggled to crawl
into the harness of the 12-foot
winged mountain on wheels he'd
designed in preparation for flying
day, or "Flugtag" in German.
Bomberg, three other UF en-
gineering students and one UF
graduate participated in Red
Bull's annual Flugtag tournament
in Tampa on Saturday.
The competition requires
teams to design, build and "fly"
their contraptions off a 30-foot
ledge into Tampa Bay.
"Most just drop rather than
fly," Bomberg said.
The UF team, dressed as dif-
ferent Greek gods and bearing the
title "By the Beard of Zeus," did
not place in the tournament but
managed to fly about 22 feet, one
foot farther-than the third-place
team.
Distance is only one fac-

tor in judging the competition.

year asking if they were interested
in starting a team.
Bomberg and Brandon Crone
replied immediately.
Kyle Ricker and DeMarco's
wife, Tricia DeMarco, also signed
up.
The team brainstormed design
ideas, eventually settling on a
fixed-wing parafoil, which Tricia
DeMarco said is "kind of like a
parachute."
They presented their plan to
UF engineering professor David
Bloomquist for any suggestions
the former glider consultant
could give.
He not only approved the
project but also handed the team
$500.
For about two months, they
each worked about 70 hours
on their original design, using
mostly bamboo donated by local
Kanapaha Botanical Gardens.
Tricia DeMarco, who dressed
as Athena for the contest and was
asked by small girls for "pictures
with the princess," said she hopes
another UF team follows in their
flight path.
"It was a once-in-a-lifetime
experience," she said. "An outra-
geous one that I don't think I'll do
again."

Private donations let Harn Museum stay open Tuesdays

Other museums struggle with cuts

The Ham Museum of Art will remain
open six days a week despite an earlier bud-
get-cutting plan that would have closed the
building on Tuesdays.
Rebecca Nagy, the museum's director,
said $100,000 pledged by private donors
who asked to remain anonymous allowed

the museum to stay open an extra day,
though it will still be dosed on Mondays as
usual.
Nagy said in addition to a decrease in the
number of exhibit tours the museum could
offer, dosing the doors on Tuesdays would
have meant one less session of Tot Times,

where children 2 to 5 years old receive
hands-on interaction with art, each month.
Meanwhile, other UF art centers were not
able to save some of their popular programs
and personnel from budget
On cuts.
Campus The Phillips Center for the
Performing Arts has already
downsized its 2008-2009 schedule by 25 per-

cent, said Mike Blachly, the center's director.
The cut means about 20 fewer shows will
be brought to UF this year.
The Florida Museum of Natural History
faces a $515,000 budget cut.
Six full-time positions have been elimi-
nated, and five employees were laid off, said
Douglas Jones, the museum's director.

UF prof helps solve Russian mystery

Edward Izqulerdo / Alligator
Anthony Falsetti, CA. Pound Human Identification
Laboratory director, poses at the Reitz Union Monday.

By VICTORIA WINKLER
Alligator Contributing Writer

It was a very cold case.
On the night of July 17, 1918, the
last Russian Czar, Nicholas II, and his
wife and five children were shot by
Bolshevik executioners at the dawn of-
Soviet rule.
The challenge for the last 90 years
has been proving it.
Since then, rumors that one or more
of the Romanov children had escaped
have spread like wildfire, forever
fanned by people claiming to be sur-
vivors.
Anthony Falsetti, a UF anthropol-
ogy professor, has been a lead investi-
gator in the royal family's mysterious
demise for years.
Because of his work, Falsetti will
be featured in a National Geographic
Channel investigation titled "Explorer:
Finding Anastasia," which premieres
tonight at 10 p.m.
Falsetti was involved in the analysis
of the first Romanov remains found in
1991, which used DNA testing to iden-
tify five members of the royal family.

The remains of two of the children,
Alexei and either Maria or Anastasia,
were still missing.
In fall 2007, more remains were
discovered about 70 yards from those
found in 1991.
Falsetti said it's possible there was
not enough room in the first grave, so
they were buried in the closest space
trees and roots would allow.
Falsetti was recruited by National
Geographic to ana-
UF lyze DNA from 44
Agaddem!CS bone fragments to de-
termine if the remains
belonged to the missing children.
Most of the work was funded by a
grant from the National Geographic
Society, Falsetti said.
He and his colleagues sent the chil-
dren's DNA samples back to the U.S.
and compared them with the parents'
DNA. Their forensic work confirmed
the remains belonged to the missing
children.
Though experts disagree on which
sister was found with Alexei, the fam-
ily's only son, all four daughters are
now accounted for. The findings were

backed up by DNA tests done in Russia
and the U.K. as well, Falsetti said.
"Hopefully, this will dispel the
rumors that somehow this fam-
ily escaped," he said. "And certainly
Anastasia and Alexei were killed that
night."
Falsetti said he later tested bullets
and ceramics found at the site and ven-
tured into archives in Moscow, which
hold accounts of some of the confessed
murderers, to figure out what really
happened that night.
He believes most of the mystery
stems from the killers' botched clean-
up job.
"They hadn't really thought this
through," Falsetti said, "and I don't
know if this part is true, but there may
have been a lot of vodka involved."
Remains belonging to the two chil-
dren were severely damaged, leading
investigators to conclude that the
murderers initially wanted to burn all
the bodies but gave up when the two
bodies failed to ignite.
"After 90 years, the mystery is
solved, and the royal family can be
buried together," he said.

ing the fraternity in spring 2007.
"It doesn't bother me any-
more," he said. "I kind of get
excited about it."
Josh Garmizo, a UF freshman,
said this was the first time he'd
ever attended a step show.
Garmizo had never heard of
the fraternity hosting the step

He was so impressed by the

Turn of Phrase

Bush's shift on Iraq

timetable shows promise
L ast week, in what appears to be a momentous and
welcome shift, the Bush administration announced
that it would be working with the Iraqi government
to develop a "general time horizon" for the redeployment
of U.S. forces from Iraq. According to White House Press
Secretary Dana Perino, President Bush and Iraqi Prime
Minister Nouri al-Maliki have reached a verbal accord on the
issue of setting what might otherwise be called a timetable
for the withdrawal of U.S. soldiers from Iraq. But don't make
the mistake of confusing the terms "timetable" and "general
time horizon."
In order to wade through the ambiguity that the seemingly
synonymous terms could create in the minds of readers, we
believe it may be instructive to allow the White House press
secretary to present a quick lesson on Washington-speak, or
if you prefer, political-speak, at this juncture.
As Perino was careful to note, the contours of the agree-
ment on when American servicemen and servicewomen can
come home is not "an arbitrary deadline" (timetable), but
rather is contingent on the meeting of certain aspirationall
goals" (general time horizon), which include, but are not lim-
ited to, the reduction of American troop levels in Iraq. Got it?
Yeah, we didn't either.
Perhaps the Iraqi prime minister could shed some light
on the difference between "timetable" and "general time
horizon."
In an interview with a German magazine, Prime Minister
al-Maliki had this to say about the ongoing negotiations
with the U.S. in regards to troop redeployment: "So far, the
Americans have had trouble agreeing to a concrete timetable
for withdrawal because they feel it would appear tantamount
to an admission of defeat. But that isn't the case at all. If we
come to an agreement, it is not evidence of a defeat, but of a
victory." The prime minister went on to say that Iraqis want
"to establish a timeframe for the withdrawal of international
troops and it should be short." In other words, the Iraqis
are seeking a timetable for withdrawal, and they want U.S.
troops to leave sooner rather than later.
Later in the interview, al-Maliki essentially endorsed Sen.
Barack Obama's phased redeployment plan, although he
has since attempted to qualify his remarks so as to temper
tensions between the Iraqi government and the Bush admin-
istration. You see, in politics, it's almost never a good idea to
admit you were wrong about anything. Especially when you
are playing the role of a principled, resolute, confident com-
mander-in-chief.
It has been a trademark of the Bush administration to
deride the mere mention of timetables as dangerous, naive
and even unpatriotic. The president and his neoconservative
acolytes have labeled anyone who has called for timetables
a "cut-and-runner" meaning someone who is willing to
accept defeat in Iraq when victory is ostensibly within sight.
The problem with that logic, however, is once again a matter
of semantics. How do we define "victory" within the con-
struct of a woefully unnecessary conflict so devoid of any
intelligible purpose?
For an answer to the above question, we turn to Sen. John
McCain that is, the McCain of 2004. In 2004, McCain was
asked whether the U.S. should accept timetables if the Iraqis
asked for them. This is what he said: "I don't see how we
could stay when our whole emphasis and policy has been
based on turning the Iraqi government over to the Iraqi
people."
We couldn't agree more. Timetables or time horizons,
the verbiage is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is
exchanging our current "win-in-Iraq-or-die-trying" strategy
for something more tangible and coherent.

Program illustrates local mismanagement

s long as they avoid the monument to capitalism
that is Butler Plaza, many denizens of Alachua
County are able to convince themselves that the
county is their own little bohemian paradise, an enlight-
ened splotch of blue in an otherwise hopelessly red part
of the state. Along with the ivory-tower idealism leaching
out from UF, this attitude has resulted in a certain political
party controlling local government practically unopposed
for decades. Throw in a huge tax base that doesn't vote
and doesn't care (that's you, students), and you have a
recipe for disaster.
Consider the county's CHOICES health insurance
program. On its face, the program is admirable. It intends
to provide health insurance for those who don't qualify
for federal assistance by way of a virtually unnoticeable
increase in sales taxes. In practice, however, the program
has been laughably unsuccessful. Since its inception in
2004, it has enrolled slightly more than 1,000 citizens and
collected almost $30 million in tax revenue, practically all
of which has gone unused and now sits untouched. Even
. worse, the program is expected to suck $40 million more
out of the local economy over the next four years.
There is a number of reasons why the program has
failed on such an extraordinary scale. The bottom line,
though, is that CHOICES represents exactly the wrong
model of health care for the citizens it's targeting those
who make just enough money to be classified as above
the poverty line but are still unable to afford health insur-
ance.
Health care shouldn't come in the form of a blind gov-
ernment handout except for in the direst of circumstances.
What government should be doing is making health insur-
ance less expensive so that citizens can afford it. Toward
this end, Gov. Charlie Crist and the state Legislature

recently implemented a plan that
will force insurance providers to
simplify policy requirements and
offer more sensible coverage. The
plan is expected to reduce the cost
of health insurance by more than
Joshua Simmons 60 percent and make it cheaper for
letters@alligator.org employers to provide coverage for
their employees.
Individual counties, though,
don't have the sort of bargaining power or political clout
to implement such policies. As a result, governments that
believe they are the solution to every problem, such as
Alachua County's, are left with no options other than bla-
tant wealth redistribution, such as in CHOICES.
Why, though, should students even care about this
farce of a program? Most of us are only here for four years,
many of us never change our voter registration, and sadly,
a large portion of us hardly keep track of the amount of
money we spend in this town, much less of the taxes we
pay
But even if you don't care about the welfare of the
county or its citizens, what about RTS? The $1.5 million
deficit RTS faces for next year is a paltry sum next to the
over $30 milliort growing mold in the CHOICES account.
What about our roads? I can name at least five roads in the
county that are in desperate need of resurfacing.
During the school year, UF students represent a fifth
of the population of Alachua County. It's about time that
some of us became more indignant about the comic mis-
management of our local government.
Joshua Simmons is an economics senior and member of the
Alachua County Republican Executive Committee. His column
appears on Tuesdays.

Letters to the Ed.'ar
Republicans divided on energy policy
Joshua Simmons' guest column on
energy policy is a frightening vision for
America that is indicative of an increasing
divide in the Republican Party, of which I
am a member.
His solution to "drill our way out"
of energy dependence by tapping into
domestic oil reserves, harnessing nuclear
power and continuing to let the largest
pollution emitters slide with large-scale

tax breaks and no caps on emissions is
simply a continuation of the Bush admin-
istration's dangerous refusal to acknowl-
edge the realities of our energy situation.
According to the Department of Energy,
America has the potential to create 20 per-
cent of its energy from wholesale invest-
ment in wind power, one of America's
greatest unharnessed resources. The tran-
sition can't be immediate, but more clean
coal can fill the gap far better than ethanol.

This is a stance that even Sen. John McCain
recognizes.
Let's hope for America's sake that
the Republican Party stops ideological
dogmatism from getting in the way of
common-sense solutions and instead,
turns once again to the ingenuity of the
American spirit, as Ronald Reagan in-
spired us to do.

Officer: Man refused to drop knife

OFFICER, from page 1

a knife, Hallett said.
She said police do not know what motivated
Gaddy's actions.
Byrd, who has worked at the police depart-
ment since 2002, told investigators he heard
"a commotion" inside as he approached the
apartment.
Byrd told police he forced his way into the
home, where he found Gaddy about to kick the
bathroom door off its hinges.
He said he asked Gaddy to drop the knife
several times, but Gaddy refused.
Byrd then shot him in the chest.

Investigators will look into whether the
shooting was an appropriate response to the
situation and whether the officer followed de-
partment procedures accurately.
Hallett said police would not release the
number of shots fired.
LoCal Backup officers arrived and
News arrested Gaddy, though they said
he resisted violently.
Gaddy was charged with aggravated do-
mestic assault.
In 2005, Gaddy was sentenced for posses-
sion of marijuana, burglary and trafficking in
stolen property.
He served about eight months in the
county jail, according to Florida Department of
Corrections records.

Nearly 75,000 will volunteer in China

GAMES, from page 1

Last year, Zhang and
Connaughton brought a
group of UF students to
Tsinghua to learn about the
Olympic facilities while they
were being built.
Zhang said it was then
that Tsinghua faculty encour-
aged the professors to apply
for the volunteer positions.
Nearly 75,000 volun-
teers from 98 countries and
provinces are expected to
volunteer in Beijing for the
Olympics, which is an all-
time Olympic record, accord-
ing to the Beijing Games Web
site. More than 1,125,000
people applied to volunteer.
"We're honored both per-
sonally and professionally,"
Connaughton said.
Both professors said they
hope to gain valuable experi-

ence from the Megaa" sports
event back to the classroom
in Gainesville.
"I can teach the students
with actual on-site experi-
ence rather than just reading
from a textbook," Zhang
said.
"I want to make sure
that I truly spread our
Gator Nation overseas."
James Zhang
Olympic volunteer

Zhang said they also hope
to make connections, so stu-
dents can study how the ven-
ues are used and managed
after the Olympics. He said
it will be good experience
for students to see how the
venues serve the community
after the event.
Unfortunately for the vol-
unteers, their time in Beijing

may be all work and no play.
Connaughton said vol-
unteers are not given tickets
to any of the actual Olympic
events.
"We're hoping we can
find some cheap tickets to
some preliminary events,"
he said.
Connaughton said the
first four to five days in
Beijing will be devoted to
training, but Zhang said all
they have been told is to
expect long days and boxed
dinners.
Both professors plan to
show Gator spirit while at
the games. The two have
to wear uniforms while on
duty, but each said he was
packing orange and blue ap-
parel to wear off duty.
"I want to make sure that
I truly spread our Gator
Nation overseas," Zhang
said.

High school stars get national exposure in Swamp

M IIU[IKW OL iI.11l1 / "II il.,
More than 150 high school football players invaded Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Friday for Urban Meyer's
annual Friday Night Lights camp.

* IT WAS THE FOURTH YEAR
OF FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

By MIKE DiFERDINANDO
Alligator Staff Writer
mdiferdinando@alligator.org

The lights inside Ben Hill Griffin
Stadium shined almost as bright as
the talent on the field.
The fourth edition of UF's Friday
Night Lights football camp, one of
the biggest recruiting events in the
country for high school athletes,
was more like a remix.
Jay-Z's "Encore" blared over the
loudspeaker while the television
broadcast of the 2008 UF-Tennessee
game played on video screens
around the stadium.
. Urban Meyer let out a scream and
a fist pump as he watched the replay
of Brandon James returning the
game's opening kickoff for a touch-
down, and Chris Rainey danced
along to Flo Rida's "Elevator" while
he watched the running backs race
through drills.
The atmosphere, more concert
than football camp, delighted pres-
ent and future players alike.

"It was electric, man. I loved
it," Gastonia, N.C., wide receiver
Jheranie Boyd said. "I've neveren
anything like this before."
Meyer said that he wanted to
give the players a taste of a game-
like atmosphere-in The Swamp. He
did.
The evening started in the
newly built UF weight room, where
prospects were put through a full
workout by strength coach Mickey
Marotti.
"I've never been to a camp where
they made us do a real workout be-
fore we played," Boyd said. "It was
really tough. Coach Marotti pushed
us hard."
Then, it was off to the locker
room for a pregame pep talk from
Meyer.
After that the amped-up group
of more than 150 highly rated pros-
pects got their chance to storm out
of the tunnel and onto the field in
game-like fashion.
"It was crazy, man. When they
played the video and did 'Here
Come the Gators,' I got goose
bumps all over my body," Boyd

RECRUITING

Top 10 FNL performances

By MIKE DiFERDINANDO
Alligator Staff Writer
mdiferdinando@alligator.org
Editor's Note: This list is the opinion of the
reporter who attended the event.
The stars were definitely out at last
week's Friday Night Lights camp. Here's
the rundown on who shined the brightest.
10. Jordan Reed 6-3, 235 (New London,
C.T.) QB: Reed probably had the strongest
arm of all the quarterbacks in attendance.
He's not as mobile as the other prospects,
but he has the size to be an intimidating
presence at the line of scrimmage. Reed is
someone who will probably garner more
and more attention as the year goes on.
9. Jonotthan Harrison 6-4, 290
(Groveland, Fla) OL: The UF commit
was everything he was advertised to be.
Harrison was definitely the most consis-
tent of the linemen at FNL. He has the size
and athleticism to be a future pillar of the
UF offensive line.
8. Gary Brown 6-3, 275 (Quincy, Fla)
DT: Another future Gator. Brown was
the most dominant of the defensive line
prospects. He was quick off the line and

seemed to have his way with the offensive
lineman.
7. Jheranie Boyd 6-2, 184 (Gastonia,
N.C.) WR: Boyd spent most of the night
running past defensive backs. He has great
size and was able to push around smaller
corners. Boyd came away impressed with
UF and a commitment may come soon.
6. Dre Kirkpatrick 6-2, 180 (Gadsden,
Ala) CB: One of the bigger comers at the
camp, Kirkpatrick uses his size and physi-
cality to his advantage. He was good in
one-on-one drills and
Swas able to shut down
I most of the wide receiv-
ers. Because of his size,
he might have to make
the move to safety at the
next level.
5. Rodney Scott 5-9,
scott 185 (Cross City, Fla) RB:
He's small but strong. Scott showed incred-
ible balance during drills. He also showed
the ability to catch the ball out of the back-
field and should be an asset in the passing
game. He was definitely the second-best

Five Media Days questions

Finally.
No more brain rattling for
stories. No more hoping that
something, anything happens that's
UF sports related to run a story on.
Football is finally poking its head
around the sports doldrums comer.
The Southeastern Conference Media
Days start on Wednesday, and this
edition of Steele-ing Bases has decided
to bring you the top questions Urban
Meyer is going to have to deal with.

1. Can I get a safety?
A year ago, this would've been
laughable. We all knew Tony Joiner
would be out the door, and nothing
against Tony, but he could be ad-
equately replaced.
Then Jerimy Finch finally figured
out how far away Florida was from his
hometown of Indianapolis. Transfer.
Then Jamar Hornsby decided it
was a dandy idea to lack any human
decency. Hornsby was charged with

a*= using the credit
card of UF stu-
S dent Ashley
Slonina, who
tragically died
Brian Steele with walk-on
Brian Steele quarterback
Steele-ing Baes Michael Guilford
bsteele@alligator.org in a crash. Kicked
off. Kicked out.
Just get out, Jamar. Meyer should take
me at safety before he lets Hornsby
anywhere near this team, his family or
anybody that has a soul.
Then Dorian Munroe. This is the
guy you feel for. Munroe's been a
pretty decent player for two years
now, and you already knew incoming
freshman Will Hill would be on his
heels from day one. Munroe's heels
are fine. It's his knee that's not. A torn
ACL has ended the probable starter's
season, and now Hill could be con-
sidered the top candidate to start.

Munroe probably could've staved off Hill
for at least a year.
Not to mention John Curtis yes, he's
a safety too went down with the same-
injury. It's bad enough that an injury to
Curtis, who was way down on the depth
chart, is considered a blow.
Ahmad Black has the talent to be a very
nice corner. But a 5-foot-9 guy at safety
doesn't sound good. Maybe Moses Jenkins
will move to safety, and former wide
receiver Cade Holliday already has. But
none of these names are ones Gators fans
expected to hear to be in contention for the
starting safety gig last spring.

2. How healthy is Percy?
I can almost hear the prayers of SEC
coaches. Sorry, but it looks like Percy
Harvin is healthy. Regardless, it won't be
believable until the speedster is on the field
and stays on the field. Harvin has Heisman

hype going into this season, and if he stays
healthy, he'll probably keep at least some
hype throughout it.
If his hands and route running improve
even more, he's potentially the hardest
matchup in college football. He's apparent-
ly gotten even stronger and has taken his
conditioning more serious under strength
and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti.

3. And the starting running back
is...
I don't know, and Meyer won't divulge
this either. But after Chris Rainey jumped
onto the national scene with his perfor-
mance in the Orange and Blue game, it
will be very interesting to see who will get
the most carries. Once Emmanuel Moody
transferred here from Southern Cal, all of
us were saying he'd be the first 1,500-yard
back since Meyer arrived in Gainesville.
Then in the spring, he was struggling to
grasp the blocking techniques in Meyer's
system. And Meyer still has a man crush
on Kestahn Moore. Brandon James, who

I completely dismissed before last season,
deserves his touches as well.
The best guess would' be for Moore to
still start, with his carries lessening as the
season goes on. Then Moody should be
starting, but Rainey will be the home run
threat. You could even make the argument
that Rainey's the most important player on
offense if he can provide that other big-play
threat next to Harvin.

4. Tim Tebow
There's not one specific question about
Tebow. But when you're the coach of a
sophomore who scored 51 touchdowns,
people are going to want you to talk about
him. How does he follow it up? How does
he actually get better?
Tebow will probably just blush and
giggle when asked these questions, but
there is room for improvement. His throw-
ing mechanics can improve and so can his
accuracy. So can his decision making.
And all of this is very bad news for col-
lege football. May the One Gator Nation

Under Tebow have mercy on their poor
linebackers and secondaries.

5. "Florida Nonsense"
That's what will happen when anybody
asks Meyer about the Nov. 1 matchup
with Georgia. Or any other game besides
the season opener against Hawaii. Meyer
doesn't look ahead, or at least he doesn't
admit to it.
At least he doesn't say, "We're taking
it one game at a time," the classic coach
cliche. Instead, he calls all that hype about
anything outside of the immediate future
"Florida Nonsense."
Even though the stars will prcMP9iy
align to make the Bulldogs/Gators match-
up the deciding factor in who wins the SEC
East, you won't hear Meyer say it. You'll be
lucky if he even cracks a smile.
Meyer will probably talk about Hawaii
if you want him to, but June Jones isn't
around anymore to make comments saying
Tebow isn't as good as his former quarter-
back Colt Brennan.

Silberman commits to Gators

FNL, from page 17

said. "It gave me chills."
Parents watched from the stands
as their children worked through drill
after drill. For many, FNL is a chance
for national exposure. Droves of re-
cruiting-service scouts watched from
the stands. Many, with video cameras
in hand, squeezed in interviews while
the worn-out prospects gulped down
gallons of purple Gatorade.
"1is camp is a huge opportu-
nity everyone's watching," Coconut
Grove junior linebacker Gideon Ajagbe
said. "All the best guys are here. You
got to be able to go out there and show
everyone what you got."
FNL, Meyer's brainchild which
started in 2005, has inspired the cre-
ation of several other copycat camps
around the country. Florida State's
Seminole Showcase and Georgia's
Dawg Night were both held over the
weekend. Many of the prospects at the

camp made the trip to Tallahassee on
)Saturday for the camp at FSU.
The camp was a family affair for the
Meyers. Son, Nathan, gave out high
fives and wife, Shelly, doled out hugs.
Personal touches were at every turn.
Ajagbe said coaches took the time
to make everyone feel at home, saying
it was the family atmosphere that set
UF apart from the other schools he had
been to.
"Everything
about tonight was
just awesome,"
She said. "I felt re-
S ally comfortable
out here. I really like
Florida a lot."
Siherman Recruiting
Update: UF re-
ceived their first verbal commitment
for the class of 2010 Friday when
6-5, 257-pound Fleming Island of-
fensive tackle Ian Silberman gave his
pledge to the Gators, according to
GatorCountry.com.

Richardson, Bostic shine brightest

TOP 10, from page 17

back at the camp.
4. Morgan Newton 6-4, 205 (Carmel,
IN) QB: Newton's huge for a high school
quarterback, and he already has a college-
ready body. Showed good arm strength and
had good mobility. He is surprisingly quick
for his size. Should remind fans of another
Newton already in Gainesville. Cameron
Newton is actually bigger than Tebow and is
the Gators' backup.
3. Nu'keese Richardson 5-9,151 (Pahokee,
Fla) WR: Richardson- was hands down the
best receiver at the camp. Richardson has
speed to bum. There wasn't a comer that
could keep up with him. Although he is
small, Richardson showed great leaping abil-
ity. The UF commit will be very dangerous in

Urban Meyer's spread offense. Could fit into
the Percy Harvin role in the future.
2. Jon Bostic 6-1, 218 (Wellington, Fla)
LB: The most physically intimidating pros-
pect at the camp. Bostic looked like a man
among boys. He ran well and showed good
technique. Has the skill to play inside or out-
side linebacker at the next level.
1. Trent Richardson 5-11,. 210 (Pensacola,
Fla) RB: The star of FNL. The Alabama
commit showed why he is considered one
of the best running backs in the nation.
Extremely well built for a high school player,
Richardson has the size to stand up to pun-
ishing defenses. He showed great explosive-
ness with the ball in his hands and demon-
strated the speed to be a home-run threat. If
Urban Meyer is lucky Richardson will decide
to stay in state and follow in footsteps of fel-
low Escambia High product Emmitt Smith.
