I Fear subdues

racial troublesBy

Alligator Staff Writer

Quietly, the racial friction that put UF in national
headlines last spring has seemingly evaporated, re-
placed by a campus drawing together like never
before. Both black and white campus leaders say the
newfound harmony is not a result of hard work or
new understanding, but a byproduct of fear.
f ''v e
; b'
AS Mk Mx+ On a campus where rocky race relations were the
big story, students have united in terror followingfive
vicious murders. The brutal crimes have again
71i shoved UF into the media spotlight and made racial
problems an afterthought.Both .
administrators and students predict a quiet,
intense and somber new semester after the vicious
slayings, as UF bonds together and begins a healing
process. And, at least temporarily, allencompassingfear
has bridged the campus and community and
taken precedent over racial arguments.
Student Body President Michael Browne said the
last few weeks taught students how to work togetherand
consider each others' safety and emotions. Eliminating
racial conflict comes from this pulling to-
gether it won't happen by passing laws, he said.
"I think that right now, we've all been feeling
together and we're not going to divide up now by
race," Browne said.
Minority Affairs Assistant Dean Willie Robinsonsaid
he doesn't foresee any major racial problemsthis
fall, and he blamed last semester's so-called
turmoil on the media and much-debated groups suchas
the White Student Union.
The commonly used term, "racial tension," is too
strong to describe campus relations, he said. Generally
most black and white students interact without
problems, but the few WSU leaders have highlightedracial
policies and antagonized racial relations, Rob-
inson said.
"Sure there are some white students who feel like
(Affirmative Action policies) have no place, but then
there are just as many black students who feel thingsare
going well for them," Robinson said.
