Tensions run highTerror

Any other week, the maintenance man's clumsiness proba-
bly would have gone unnoticed, but in a city where five
murders have chilled residents, the sound of broken glass
means terror.
Tenants at Williamsburg Apartments mistook the accidental
breaking of a window pane Thursday for someone cracking a
sliding glass door so they called police.
Anxious to follow any lead, nine officers quickly surrounded ;
the scene. They found not a burglar or a serial killer, but the
t w G j hapless and nervous maintenance man.
The scene would be almost comical if it didn't show the fear
gripping Gainesville.
"Tensions are high right now," Gainesville police spokes-
woman U. Sadie Darnell said. "We want to make sure that
everyone calls on anything that they have the slightest gut
feeling is something suspicious."
Students and Gainesville residents have been doing just that
since five college students were found slain earlier this week.
Police spokesman Barry Luke said Gainesville police re-
sponded to more than 900 emergency calls Wednesday, all of
which turned out to be false alarms.
m Alachua County Sheriffs officers were called to aGainesville
