Victims of violent crimes and their families will plant
memorials at noon Tuesday outside the Alachua County
Courthouse, keeping alive memories of loved ones and the
pain they've suffered.As .
part of Victim's Rights Week activities, the "Victory
Over Violence"ceremony lets murder, rape, drunk drivingand
physical abuse victims and survivors, along with other
victims, remember those who have suffered by planting
plants.
They want to bring victims out and let them have an
opportunity to address their feelings and those of people
who haven't survived," said Maggie Gerard, an advocate
counselor with the Alachua County Rape and Crime Victim
Advocate Program.The .
garden will be divided into seven sections, each
commemorating one of the violent crimes chosen. Victimsor
survivors of each crime will do the planting, Gainesville
police spokeswoman Lt. Sadie Darnell said.

UF student Stacy LaRocca, who was stabbed last year by
then-13-year-old David Rowe, said she will participate in the
ceremony because the law often ignores victims. Rowe was
convicted last month of attempted first-degree murder' and
armed burglary.
LaRocca said a motion for a new trial filed Monday by
one of Rowe's attorneys angers her because it may force
her and her family to relive an emotionally traumatic
{ experience one she already remembers every day."I .
don't think anyone understands unless they've been in
