Bears and Barbecue next week by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle For the past 23 years, Judge James D. Sloan has served local people as their County Judge. On July 1, about 11:30 a.m. Governor Rick Scott called Judge Sloan with this message: "I'm pleased to appoint you to the 20th Circuit Court bench." The appointment will take effect September 1. His appointment will run until 2016, when his name will be added to the ballot for the 20th Circuit. Circuit Court judges must be reaf rmed by the voters every six years. Judge Sloan submitted the lengthy, detailed, 24-page application in May. The next step was a nine-member 20 Circuit Court Judicial Nomination Commission interview in Orlando with each potential judge, followed by individual interviews with the governor's staff. The governor had to make his choice to ll the opening within 60 days, The circuit court judgeship in Hendry County opened up when Circuit Judge Sherra Winesett of Lee County's retirement set several lateral moves into motion. Judge Beth Krier of Collier opted to move to the open seat in Lee and Judge Joseph Foster from Charlotte County decided to move into the Collier slot. With current Circuit Judge Donald H. Mason in LaBelle seeking to move on to Charlotte County, Judge Sloan received the position he wanted here in Hendry/ Glades. Judge Sloan said that, given his experience in so many different types of cases, he does not foresee much dif culty for him as he rises to the Circuit Court level. He has served as acting circuit judge, presiding over a $1 million civil case and a second Judge Sloan appointed to Circuit Court Submitted photo/ Waddy ThompsonSpectacular birthday celebrationAmerica celebrated its indepence a week ago, but this picture is just too good not to share! Sponsored by Kiwanis of LaBelle GERMS, GERMS, GERMS, and more germs, was the subject of Tuesday’s morning program. Nurse Kevin, with the Hendry County Health Department, shared his magic germs with a number of volunteers. After rubbing them into their hands, with the use of a black light, the kids could see all of the germs. Of course they all washed their hands, following the 20 second rule, and it was on to an experiment and the project of the day. Remember Lava Lamps? The library’s ‘Young Scientists’ all made their own colorful lava lamp this week, by putting water, oil, a zz tablet and food coloring in a plastic bottle. They also enjoyed seeing, and playing with the end result of the rubberized eggs. In fact, he’s presided over every type of case except one a case involving the death sentence. Circuit level cases include criminal misdemeanors over $15,000 as well as felonies. Felonies are punishable by over one year in the Department of Corrections and cases that could result in the death penalty, Judges are required to be certi ed before they can pass the death sentence. In addition, Judge Sloan will continue to hear juvenile cases, at least for a while. He has been hearing juvenile cases for 22 y ears. Judge Sloan said he’s comfortable with the appointment, commenting. “The time is right.” The Hendry County judgeship is now going through the same application process as the circuit did, so that it will likely be 6-8 weeks after September 1 when it is completed. After September 1, Judge Sloan said he w ill handle both county and circuit cases until a new county judge is sworn in. Over the past 23 years, he said he’s seen many Circuit Court judges come and go: the longest tenure in Hendry county was four y ears; the shortest just six weeks. “I’ve lived here since 1983,” he said. “I want to be here.” Because Hendry County is his choice, he believes it’s a great t. His appointment will go a long way in adding stability to local Circuit Court procceedings, which will then be able to fall into a pattern, he said. He feels he can contribute experience in all types of cases; When Judge Sloan comes to court, he said, “I come prepared. I read the case. I know why we’re there. It can streamline the process.” He added that his years on the bench have taught him how to listen to both verbal and nonverbal communication. During his career, he said he has worked with very young lawyers and a lot of pro se cases, in which people act as their own lawyer. Because he understands that things don’t always go as planned, he feels he has the perspective and patience required to preside over very serious cases. He notes that he received a lot of support from people that he doesn’t even know about, but feels Hendry’s concerns have been heard in Tallahassee. There will be a formal swearing-in ceremony, probably in September for Judge Sloan, followed by one for the new Hendry County Judge just a few weeks later. A joint circuit court will be convened for both. The 20th Circuit covers a ve-county area: Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades. What about you? Have you made any outstanding discoveries in this life? Now, you may not have attached to your name something as grand as the iPhone, or the cure to cancer, yet there are other discoveries one can make that can make a lasting impact. For example, have you discovered the simple joy of loving another person and putting them ahead of yourself? Can you af rm the marvelous thrill of helping another emotionally, nancially or spiritually when that individual is at a low ebb in his or her life? Is there a time when you did something anonymously with hopes that no one found out? The greatest discovery you can make is the discovery Abraham made when he learned to trust God. "What then shall we say that Abraham...discovered in this matter? If, in fact, Abraham was justi ed by works, he had something to boast about-but not before God. What does Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.' Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justi es the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness" (Rom 4:1-5). Abraham discovered that, if he trusted God, he would be right in the eyes of God. How can a person be right with God in spite of his sins? By trusting God's grace and power to save him and to forgive him of his sins. God's work of sending His son, Jesus to die for our sins is the basis of our eternal salvation. It is in trusting, not trying, that we are saved and given eternal life. I can truly sa y today that I trust Jesus and Jesus alone for my salvation. In 1847, James Simpson discovered the anesthetic properties of chloroform resulting in the saving of untold numbers of lives. It was one of the major breakthroughs o f medicine. Someone once asked James Simpson what he considered to be his discovery, expecting him to say, "Chloroform." Instead he said, "My greatest discovery was to kno w Jesus Christ is my Savior." How about you? Have you made this discovery? It is a valid truth that is worthy o f learning about, engaging and pursuing with your whole heart. What a discovery that is for an individual! God's truth conveyed in His word in a language that he or she speaks is awesome!Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located across the street from City Hall on Highway 80. Predicting disasters or hazardous incidents is impossible. The next major event can come at any moment. Preparation and planning for the unexpected is the only course of action. On June 11, 2014 more than 70 emergency responders from the region joined forces with Glades County Public Safety, Local Emergency Planning Council, Florida Department of Health in Glades County and W edgworth Fertilizer, Inc. to participate in an “Emergency Response Exercise”. After months of planning, Glades County Public Safety (along with support from responders in the region) demonstrated the ability to operate in response to a major incident that included scenarios involving real people w ith simulated serious injuries. The Planning Team worked closely together with responders and the private industry to provide a learning environment that mirrored a realistic incident. The Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties coordinated “actors” by enlisting the help from sixteen Nursing Students at Florida Gulf Coast University. Some of the students role-played as “victims” while others assisted with rapid triage. Kelly Brantley, J udicial Assistant for Glades County also volunteered to role-play in the exercise. The simulated incident occurred at W edgworth Fertilizer, Inc. in Moore Haven but also included the Florida Department of Health in Glades County which was used as a “medical staging site”. The responders and other exercise participants trained in areas that focused on emergency management, healthcare, the re serv ice, law enforcement, emergency medical services and hazardous materials. Following a hazardous event, response organizations specializing in a variety of skills are mobilized to assist in the rescue and recovery. “This type of training allows responders to deploy to an unfamiliar location and into an unknown situation and manage the incident on arrival,” said John Gibbons, Planner/Program Manager for Hazardous Waste/ Materials Program of the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council. “This was as realistic as you can make it. You respond like you train,” said Bob Kosiba, Exercise Facilitator and Regional Planner/Regional Consultant for the Florida Department of Health. “If you don’t have reality in training, when something happens you’re not going to be as prepared. We learned from each other and shared ideas. This training exercise provided the opportunity to learn together, get a common picture and spend time strengthening professional relationships.” ATTENTIONANYONE IN PORT LABELLE UNIT 4 INTERESTED FOR THE CITIZENS PATROL PROGRAM, PLEASE CALL JACKIE @ 863-675-4168 AND SIGN UP SO WE CAN SET UP THE TRAINING PROGRAM. Celebrating 25 years of service as your State Farm Agent Its our dierences that make us great. 9 Caloosa Belle July 10, 2014 Hot temperatures and high humidity means lots of sweating and this increases y our chance of dehydration. To avoid becoming dehydrated, it is important to drink plenty of uids, especially water (even if you don't feel thirsty). Depending upon your physical activity and heat exposure during hot weather, it's a good idea to drink even more water. According to health experts, uid requirements vary from person to person. Please keep in mind that people with medical conditions such as kidney disease, heart disease, or those who require a uid restricted diet or who have problems with uid retention should consult a physician before increasing their uid consumption. Knowing the signs of dehydration and knowing what to do, is very important. Signs of dehydration can include: Excessive thirst Headache Weakness Feeling dizzy or light headed Nausea Muscle cramps Feeling overly tired or sluggish Feeling irritable You could also experience decreased urine levels and/or urine that has a strong odor or is darker than normal. You may experience all, some or none of these signs so the best way to avoid dehydration is to monitor your water or uid intake, modify y our physical activity, or reduce the length of activity according to weather conditions. Don't wait for the symptoms of dry mouth, ushed skin, headaches, lightheadedness or fatigue. You should prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of uids throughout the day. Help to avoid becoming dehydrated by staying out of the direct sun, wearing light colored and loose tting clothing, limiting physical activity, and using fans when possible. If you suspect you are becoming dehydrated, get to a cool or shady area and sip cool water or uids. If your condition does not improve, seek medical attention immediately, Another heat-related illness is heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion can develop after exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of uids. Elderly, people with high blood pressure or people who work or exercise in a hot environment, are more prone to heat exhaustion. MORE… The warning signs of heat exhaustion vary, but may include: Heavy sweating Paleness Muscle cramps Dilated pupils Tiredness or weakness Feeling dizzy or light headed Headache Nausea or vomiting Fainting Skin that feels cool and moist Pulse rate that is fast and weak Breathing that is fast and shallow. If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may progress to heat stroke. Seek medical attention immediately if your symptoms last longer than one hour, if symptoms become more severe, or if you have heart problems or high blood pressure. Try to cool down b y drinking cool, nonalcoholic beverages, resting in an air-conditioned environment, taking a cool shower, bath or sponge bath, and wearing lightweight clothing. You should also try to prevent sun burn, which damages the skin's ability to dissipate heat. Have a safe and healthy summer! (July 2, 2014) – Children’s Garden of LaBelle has moved to 88 South Main Street with more room for children from age 1 through 8. The early education center, one of six operated by Child Care of Southwest Florida, also is enrolling children for its free voluntary prekindergarten program. “The new Children’s Garden of LaBelle, less than a mile from our former location, is more convenient with easier access for parents and staff,” said Child Care of Southwest Florida Executive Director Beth Lobdell. “More importantly, we have more room, the building provides better use of space, and our outdoor play area is larger with additional play structures.” The center is nationally accredited, maintains low teacher/child ratios and uses the Creative Curriculum program with lesson plans individualized for each student. Highly trained teachers facilitate learning, through play, to build early literacy, language, math and science skills and encourage children to be independent thinkers. Strong partnerships with parents help children to bene t from the best early-learning experience and prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond. Tuition includes nutritious meals and snacks, which are served family style to promote independence and social skills. Tuition ranges from $112 weekly for school-age children to $161.10 for toddlers. Part-time rates and scholarships are available. Call Center Director Sonya Flores at 863-675-3311 for more information, registration or tours. Child Care of Southwest Florida has six accredited early education centers in Lee and Hendry counties. The staff is dedicated to the premise that kindergarten is too late, based on research that shows that high-quality early childhood education reduces dropout rates, teen pregnancy and arrests. A United Way agency established in 1967, Child Care of Southwest Florida provides scholarships for low-income children through ongoing fundraising efforts. Visit www.ccsw .org to learn more.
