USA Ms. Brant will be replacing Tom Byrd, who will be assuming the publisher’s role at the company’s Delaware State News effective July 1st. “I’m delighted to see Patty get this recognition,” said Mr. Byrd. “She is extremely involved in the life of the community and committed to serving the area with our news and advertising products. Most people in LaBelle probably already assume she is the publisher.” Ms. Brant is a 27-year veteran of the Caloosa Belle. Her responsibilities also include the Immokalee Bulletin. She commented, “Working for and with the community has always been one of the best things about this position. Located on the north side of SR 80 and abutting Glades County, the site has long been viewed as an economic asset. During its heyday with the golf course in the ‘79s an ‘80s, it was a hub of activity for the entire community. The hope was that, even without the golf course, which has been sold off piecemeal, the site could still engender some economic excitement. Earlier this year St. Matthews House planned to purchase the inn and operate a court-ordered voluntary drug rehabilitation program there, replacing the hotel. Responding to the public outcry at its January 28 meeting, the Hendry County Commission denied the exemption that would have allowed that use. Now, President and CEO of St. Matthew’s House Vann Ellison con rmed that Port LaBelle Inn has been purchased by St. Matthews House as of May 2. He said the group has changed its plan and will operate Port LaBelle Inn as a hotel/restaurant, phasing out the bar over time. Mr. Ellison said the restaurant remains open from Tuesday through Saturday evenings, Mr. Ellison said that the inn is a good quality restaurant and plans to expand hours, as well as St. Matthew’s highly successful catering business. The property will be used as a “social enterprise” to support its mission. “It’s what St. Matthews does best,” Mr. Ellison said about social enterprise, but conceded that it is mainly accomplished through its ve thrift stores. This is St. Matthew’s rst attempt in the hotel industry. One group St. Matthew’s House is working with believes it can bring in 10-12,000 tourists. Clearly, St. Matthew’s House plans for the Port LaBelle Inn have evolved from the original vision of a drug rehab center. With Port LaBelle Inn, the organization’s social enterprise is expanding into tourism. He said they are currently talking with three groups interested in using the hotel as a retreat center for churches and also for businesses and housing for alternate Spring Breaks. Since 1990 St. Matthew’s House has worked with a number of colleges to set up alternate Spring Breaks for community-minded students. Students from large schools like Notre Dame, Princeton and Moody Bible College in Chicago, St. Matthew’s House continues local plan Waterplant soon to go on line Monday, May 26, the Memorial Day Services will be held at Felda Cemetery at 9 a.m. and the Ft. In fact, Mr. Ellison said many have indicated that it was a meaningful experience w here they learned more during their onew eek alternative Spring Breaks working with the poor, doing community work or in ministry, than they did in their formal classes. Mr. Ellison, who came to St. Matthew’s House in 2004 and was previously a Collier County Jail Chaplain and also ran a drug rehab program, noted that Port LaBelle Inn is a little “off the beaten path” but they want to do a good job, so are working on plans for marketing and promotions like offering Sunday brunch. “It’s exciting stuff,” he said, “we have the energy and vision to do it.” Mr. Ellison expects plans to be solidi ed some time in June. He also said he doesn’t expect everyone to like St. Matthew’s House, but hopes people will “just be fair.” He said that LaBelle has a lot to offer and believes that when residents see the impact the organization has on the community, they’ll be seen as a “good neighbor” and a “blessing to the community.” in service when the new 1.4 million gpd RO plant comes on line. The board will be taking another look at rules concerning 4H-FFA chickens and small animals being allowed in the city. Current ordinance allows these animals to be kept inside the city limits from September through March only. It was brought to the board’s attention that, while hogs and cattle are sold at the annual livestock sale, chickens and other small animals are not. They are ongoing projects that are shown again the following year. The city will consider its options. An appropriation for $9 million in SCOP money for roads may be coming from the Legislature. The proclamation is intented to support the wearing of life jackets for recreational boating. Always wearing a life jacket can help save lives as can obeying Nautical Rules against drinking alcohol or taking drugs while boating. Most boating accidents are caused by human error or poor judgment, not by the boat, equipment or environmental factors. The proclamation underscored the North American Safe Boating Campaign and named May 17-23 as national Safe Boating Week. Happy Memorial Day and Thank You, Veterans! American’s are the most fortunate people on earth! We are free to worship, or not. No one pushes us around with the butt of a gun demanding allegiance to someone or something. There is no question as to whether or not a person can voice his or her opinion concerning their position on any issue. There is one reason for these freedoms – our active military people and our veterans! On Oct. 8, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the rst Veterans Day Proclamation encouraging “widespread observance of this anniversary” and asking “all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry to join hands in the common purpose.” This Veterans Day, consider putting your word for appreciation into action by doing something meaningful for those who have sacri ced so much for our country. The Real Warriors Campaign urges everyone to get involved, even if you don’t know any veterans personally. While a simple “thank you” is always a good way to show your support, below are more personal ways you can demonstrate your appreciation to those who have served. Thank Service Members who are currently deployed. Here are some ideas Send an e-card – Have a friend, relative or neighbor who has served or is serving? Use the American Legion e-card to thank service members for all that they do. Become a Soldier’s Angel – Join Soldier’s Angels to “adopt” a service member, recommend a service member you know for adoption or participate in group activities to care for wounded, deployed or returning service members. Send a care package, letter or email to a service member you to know. Visit the U.S. Postal Service’s website for guidelines on sending mail to deployed service members. Do something unexpected – There are so many meaningful ways you can show your gratitude and support to veterans in your community, like offering to rake their leaves, wash their cars or bring them dinner or dessert. This year, reach out to a veteran you know, or one you may not, and do something unexpected. These men and women have contributed and sacri ced greatly for our nation, so do something special for them in return! Drive a van – Disabled American Veterans has established a transportation network for veterans at 172 medical centers across the country and the organization needs volunteers to drive vans to and from Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals and clinics to help veterans get needed treatment. Volunteer at a VA medical center or facility – Like all medical facilities, VA hospitals, nursing homes and clinics need volunteers. Find out what you can do to help and make a difference! Serve the Unsung Heroes: Military Families Give an Hour – If you are a psychological health professional, Give an Hour would like an hour of your time to help service members and their families cope with the issues they’re experiencing as a result of deployments. Consider participating in this network of health professionals seeking to respond to the needs of our warriors and their families. Need additional ideas for ways to support deployed service members, veterans and military families? Check out the Real Warriors Campaign partners. These not-for-pro t organizations share our mission and are working to make a difference. Here are some quotes, sayings and poems found around the internet to help commemorate Veterans Day. The most popular site for quotes is Quote Garden. Thanks to them we can show veterans and soldiers how much we care. Check out Quote Garden and Altius Directory for more Veterans Day quotes and sayings. “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” John Fitzgerald Kennedy “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.” – Elmer Davis “The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war.” Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” – Maya Angelou “We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” – Cynthi a Ozick “I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask, “Mother, what was war?” – Eve Merriam “And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free. We used it to wrap the peanut butter sandwiches we sent our kids off to school with in those quaint little metal lunch boxes that people are now scrambling to pay big bucks to own as collectables...Anyway, it’s still around and if you have trouble with weak and stiff shoulders and nd it hard to push and pull heavy appliances around just pot some wax paper underneath and stuff slides easily. I have a sewing machine that I bought when we were stationed in Germany in 1957 that must weigh as much as I did then....O.K. Across the state, there are more than 500 smoke-free multiunit housing properties and 73,000 smoke-free units. “There’s a fear of alienating resident smokers, but most communities that have taken the leap consider smoke-free housing an edge over the competition and have determined that there is a market for this product’ according to Chip Tatum, the former Government Affairs Director for the Florida Apartment Association. For property managers and landlords, smoke-free policies can have economic bene ts. More than 80% of Floridians are non-smokers. Many people who do smoke do not permit smoking in their homes. Given these numbers, many properties have very successfully marketed their smoke-free policy as an amenity, not a restriction. Smokefree policies can save money by eliminating the need to repair or replace carpeting, oors, xtures, countertops or appliances damaged by burns or nicotine stains. At the end of a lease, smoke-free units require less turnover time due to fewer preparation and repainting needs. In one Florida survey of 421 managers o f smoke-free properties, 99.5 percent of the managers agreed that smoke-free policies do not hurt occupancy and 30.1 percent believed that they increased occupancy. Tobacco smoke can move along air ducts, through cracks in the walls and oors, through elevator shafts, and along plumbing and electrical lines affecting units that are nearby. Therefore, there are also numerous bene ts for residents as tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, hundreds of which are toxic and at least 70 known to cause cancer. Exposure, even for short periods of time, can be dangerous. “A home should be a safe place for everyone, especially for children, people with existing health conditions, and the elderl y who are more vulnerable to the effects o f secondhand smoke,” Sherry Elliott, Hendr y Tobacco-Free Partnership Chairperson. For more information, visit tobaccofreeorida.com/smokefreehousing. Protect residents from secondhand smoke and smoking-related res Riverside Retreat is partnering with Goodw ill Industries of Southwest Florida to build a walkway and dock for access to the river for all people. This facility will be ADA compliant, enabling individuals with disabilities to enjoy the river’s edge for shing and other recreational pursuits. We are excited about this new addition to our facility and the many blessings it will have for participants coming to Riverside. Volunteers will construct the deck and create the walkway. Honc Construction will be doing the pilings and stringers. As with any project, this one comes at a cost. Donors are needed to support the ongoing ministry at Riverside through this project. You can donate by check, credit card or make a secure online donation through their website. You can also see the Riverside site and share our dream if you wish to come out (by appointment only, please). Donations of $5.00—$10,00.00 (or more) are welcome If you wish to honor someone with naming rights, that can certainly be done as well. $10,000 will reserve one of three benches with a plaque which will display the wording of your choice to honor someone or your donation for perpetuity. For $5,000 you have an opportunity for naming rights on one of the three platform areas; and for $1,000 you can “adopt a board.” Other naming opportunities can be discussed and considered per request. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to honor someone you love or to receive the recognition you deserve for contributing to this structure. Please feel free to contact the camp by email or phone if you have questions or would like to arrange a site visit. Help build ADA dock at Riverside
