Both Health Department buildings were dedicated in her honor. Even though she is now retired, she still follows her passion of rural health by serving on several boards such as Children’s Advocacy, The Children’s Hospital, Health Planning Council, and Hendry-Glades Behavioral Health. Dr. Valiant said “I absolutely loved my years at the Hendry and Glades Health Departments. It enabled me to ful ll my goals of tackling rural health issues.” When asked how she would like to be remembered, she humbly stated, “I hope that I am remembered as a doctor who made a difference in the lives of children and their families in rural communities.” Over the years, Dr. Valiant has been recognized for her Public Health imprint on the world. In 1997 she received the “Outstanding Woman in Public Health” award from the College of Public Health, University of South Florida. Over a span of years from 1997 to present day she has received the “FRHA Wendell Rollason Award”, the “Sidney S. Chipman Award”, the “Healthy Start Lifetime Achievement Award”, and the Greater LaBelle Chamber of Commerce “Woman of the Year Award”. Most recently, she was named by WGCU to its list of “21 Southwest Florida Women Who Have Made a Difference”. (WGCU is a PBS-member television station in Fort Myers, Florida, owned and operated by Florida Gulf Coast University). Pat Dobbins, Administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties said, “Dr. Valiant continues to be an inspiration to me; she is one of my personal heroes. This is a person who de nitely encompasses every aspect of a Public Health Hero”. Joanne Vorhees, ARNP began her career in Public Health in 1968. For the last 45 years, Ms. Vorhees has been involved in all aspects of Public Health as an Advance Registered Nurse Practitioner for the Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties. Her specialty has always been women’s health which also includes adolescents. She is known for her efforts in promoting clinic schedules to encourage adolescents to enter family planning services, and for providing much needed family planning education to the rural areas of Hendry and Glades Counties. Early in her nursing career, she worked at Baylor University Hospital in Dallas Texas which had over 800 hospital beds and 17 operating rooms. Her family decided to move to Florida in the 1960’s and settled in Clewiston. Ms. Vorhees became an Operating Room and Emergency Room Supervisor at Hendry General Hospital in Clewiston where she assisted with labor and delivery. After making the move to Public Health, she promoted the use of videos to educate women about their health and family planning choices, taught parenting classes at the local high schools, and has assisted with prenatal and primary care in the clinical setting. She continues to be a patient advocate and believes in preventative services and education. Ms. Vorhees is a former Board Member of the Harlem Academy Daycare and is an active member of the local chapters of the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society. Over the years Ms. Vorhees stated that she has seen lots of changes in Public Health, but was most happy to see changes in immunization requirements for school entry. Ms Vorhees stated, “I love being part of a rural community. I now see the grandchildren of people that I remember giving school immunizations to. It’s nice getting to know the whole family.” Retirement is something that she does not want to consider. She loves the work she does and the communities that she serves. She hopes to continue her service in Public Health for several more years. “It’s amazing that Joanne has dedicated 45 years of her life to Public Health, and we are so happy that she chose to spend those years of service with us at the Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties. It truly is a remarkable accomplishment.” said Pat Dobbins. The Florida Department of Health has a rich history that began in 1889. Major programs have been developed through the years that improve and protect the health of Floridians. Although the name and logo have changed, the mission and outcome o f public health has continuously in uenced the quality of life in Florida that is still enjoyed today. Much of the success of the Department of Health is due to the long-standing count y and state partnership. The Department has focused on building strategic working relationships with other agencies, organizations, health care professionals and community leaders. SCF From Page 1 Health From Page 1

TALLAHASSEE – Tobacco Free Florida is encouraging Floridians to learn the facts about the harmful effects of using smokeless tobacco and to make a plan to stop using these products. To help raise awareness, the Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida is observing Through W ith Chew Week from February 16-22. Compared to the decrease in youth cigarette use, there has not been a signi cant change in the use of smokeless tobacco products among youth. In 2013, 5 percent of Florida high school students reported current use of smokeless tobacco products compared to 5.1 percent a decade ago. Smokeless tobacco includes products such as chew, spit, dip, snuff and snus. These products are commonly used by placing the product between the teeth and gum. Chemicals in smokeless tobacco are absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. “Smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking as some youth may believe,” said Tobacco Free Florida Bureau Chief Shannon Hughes. “In fact, some of these products may contain a higher concentration of nicotine than the average cigarette.” There are many dangers associated with the use of smokeless tobacco. Some of the harmful effects include: Cancers of the mouth, tongue, cheek, throat, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, pharnx and larynx Increased risk of heart attack and stroke Leukoplakia (oral lesions on the cheeks gums, and/or tongue) Users of smokeless tobacco have an 80 percent higher risk of oral cancer and a 60 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer and of pancreatic cancer compared to nonusers. The use of smokeless tobacco also causes gum disease (gingivitis), which can lead to bone and tooth loss.[v] Studies show adolescent boys who use smokeless tobacco have a higher risk of becoming cigarette smokers. Like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco products contain nicotine, a highly addictive and dangerous chemical. Adolescents’ bodies are more sensitive to nicotine, and adolescents are more easily addicted than adults. Furthermore, most tobacco users start by the age of 18. These young people rarely consider the long-term health consequences associated with tobacco use when they start and many continue using tobacco well into adulthood, often with serious and even deadly consequences. Tobacco Free Florida works to educate and inform citizens that smokeless tobacco products are not effective ways to quit smoking. Currently, there is no scienti c or medical evidence that can prove the use of smokeless tobacco is an effective way for a person to quit smoking. Floridians who want to quit any form of tobacco have access to the state’s free and proven-effective resources, which include free FDA-approved nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), like the patch and gum, when medically appropriate. This combined approach of counseling and NRT may double or triple a tobacco user’s chance of quitting.[x]Tobacco Free Florida’s 3 Free & Easy Ways to Quit include: Call the Florida Quitline at 1-877-UCAN-NOW to speak with a Quit Coach who will help assess a user’s addiction and help create a personalized quit plan. Enroll in the Web Coach, which will help to create a web-based quit plan unique to each individual user, visit https://www. quitnow.net/ orida. Visit AHEC’s website, http://ahectobacco.com, to locate a local AHEC and sign up for Quit Smoking Now group classes. Take the initiative this February; make the choice to be Through With Chew. For more information on smokeless tobacco, visit www.tobaccofree orida.com/smokelesstobacco. In part one, we studied the beliefs of Islam and how it came to be by using the Christian Bible. This is a Bible study relevant and timely when we consider the many events shaping our world today. Community Briefs Steve Hildebrand, Minister at Central Church of Christ in LaBelle, challenged the congregation to raise $10,000 for the Mount Dora Christian Home and Bible School. If the challenge was met Preacher Steve committed to ride his bicycle from LaBelle to Clermont, 145 miles, then run the rest of the way to Mount Dora, 25 miles, the following day to deliver the check. The congregation took the challenge and met it head-on, raising not only $10,000, but a total of $20,600. When the date and time for the bike ride arrived, January 30, at 3 a.m., Preacher Steve woke up to a cold, rainy, windy day, making it unsafe to ride. The plan was changed to drive to Clermont then get up to begin the 25-mile run into Mount Dora the following morning at 5 a.m., but, by 2:30 a.m. it was pouring rain, again, not a safe day to be running along the highway. Although disappointed, the plan was changed as well. The funds were raised, the congregation was pleased that their preacher didn't have to complete the physical challenge he had agreed to, and the children's home was amazed, and grateful for the generous donation they received. Mount Dora Christian Home and Bible School was established in 1945 and has been "preparing children for life and eternity" ever since. Central Church of Christ continues its support for children’s home Submitted photoSteve Hildebrand of Central Church of Christ delivered a very nice check to the Mount Dora Children’s Home.

The present is always built on the past. That holds true for all of human history from individuals to countries and even the entire w orld. Every year LaBelle celebrates its heritage by looking back at one of the families that helped lay the rst "bricks" of this community. For 2014, that is the James and Mary Ann Driggers Kirkland Family. The family was in the LaBelle area previous to 1858, when it was still part of Hillsborough County. Both sides of the family claim veterans of the Revolutionary War: Richard Snowdon Kirkland and Jonas Driggers. Both James Kirkland and Mary Ann's father, Jacob Driggers, were Civil War veterans. James had served in the Confederate Army in the 1st Fl. Infantry, CoD, as a private, under Cols. J. Patton Anderson and William Miller. The Kirklands and the Driggers both migrated to this area from Bulloch, Georgia. Mary Ann Driggers Kirkland, later also known as Polly Powers or "Granny Powers," and her husband, James Kirkland were married Aug. 26, 1858. James was born May 19, 1826, was the son of Joshua Kirkland and Harriet Lee and the oldest of 6 or 7 siblings. He also had 8 half-siblings from his dad's second marriage to Sarah Fender. All of this occurred in Bulloch, Ga. Both the Kirklands and Driggers migrated to Florida from Bulloch County, GA, as did many other families that reside in southwest Florida. James was living in Madison County, Florida, as early as 1841 with his father and step-mother. Records show that throughout the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s, the Kirkland family moved further south, having stopped off in South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Originally, the family came from Scotland where they belonged to the Maxwell Clan. It is unknown how Polly's rst husband, J ames Kirkland, died but he was about 74 y ears old at the time. Polly married Stafford Powers, over 20 y ears her junior. The reason for the union is unclear, but they apparently did not remain together very long and she resumed using the name Kirkland around 1900 until she married "Judge" Hendley, her third husband. Dolores Agnew recalls seeing several ladies at her grandmother, Amy Sweeney's, home, quilting on a ceiling mounted frame. Her grandmother, born in 1883, recalled that the family would travel all the way to Arcadia to do their "tradin" because there was no road to Fort Myers, only the river. The family w ould sleep outdoors because it took two days to get there, a day or two to resupply, and another two days to return. Dolores' great-great-grandparents, Mary A nn and Jake Kirkland, were citrus growers w ho, family lore states, budded a very sweet blood red orange tree that had red streaks. Everywhere there are invisible footprints left by members of the Kirkland family. Dolores' great uncle, Tim Kirkland, was caretaker at Fort Denaud Cemetery, where so many Kirklands are buried, her grandfather, George Sweeney, was bridge tender at BUILDERS CHOICE SUPPLYYOUR CHOICE...a Licensed Contractor or a Do It Yourself Pro 875 Elm Street (863) 674-9900 LaBelle, FL 33935 Fax: (863) 674-9901SWAMP CABBAGE SPECIALS FEB. 20 FEB. 27EXTERIOR DOORS $100 INTERIOR DOORS 10% OFF BUILDING WRAP 9X150 $50 6.25X12 HARDI LAP SIDING $5 STOCKADE FENCE PANELS 10% OFF 8X8X8 CROSS TIES $15 COME CHECK OUT ALL THE OTHER SALES WE HAVE ON LAMINATE FLOORING, DOOR LOCKS AND PAINT WE HAVE A FULL LINE OF HARDWARE & BUILDING SUPPLIES CONCRETE BLOCKS, BAG GOODS, REBAR, WIRE MESH AND MUCH MORE (WHILE SUPPLIES LAST) THANK YOU LABELLE FOR YOUR BUSINESS EZ Auto Sales EZ101SALES.COM Guaranteed Credit Approval*TTTF Randy Hamilton Chip Dorn 863-675-1866 On SR80 Between Windmill Hardware & Gator Sports 2008 GMC Acadia SLT2 Loaded One Owner 8 Passenger Perfect Car Fax $16990* 2001 Ford F150 Perfect Car Fax $5990* 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx SS Perfect Car Fax, Sport Pkg, Sunroof $9990* 2004 Toyota Camry LE Perfect Car Fax Leather and a Sunroof $9990* 9 Caloosa Belle February 20, 2014 The Kirklands: The 2014 SCF Pioneer Family Submitted photoFive generations of the Kirkland family! Her great uncle Robert Kirkland was killed in a train crash at Goodno in 1935, along with three others. Many local residents have family connections to the James and Mary Ann Driggers Kirkland Family. Their offspring have multiplied and contributed much to the community over the decades. These family names include Cochran, Poole, Forrey, Burchard, Messer and Yeomans. Like all of the area pioneers, the family survived off the land. Their meat came from turtles, squirrels, rabbits, birds, deer, wild and domestic hogs, often smoked or salted, and they had a cow for milk. They grew potatoes, peanuts, corn, peas, beans and so on and also had papaya, persimmons, guavas, mangoes, rose apples, grapes and avocados. Empty feed sacks served as material for clothing, with unbleached muslin for linens and underwear. For the 2014 Swamp Cabbage Festival Pioneer Family matriarch, Dolores Agnew, descending from a woman self-made like Mary A nn Kirkland “Granny” Powers and the other pioneers in her family who braved the hardships of “uncivilized” Florida to form the solid foundation of this placed called LaBelle, is a source of great pride. Her description of Mary Ann “Polly Powers” Kirkland includes words like determination, fortitude and Southern grit. Since she rst arrived in LaBelle over 35 y ears ago, the 2014 SCF Grand Marshal has occupied a huge place in the hearts of innumerable youngsters and parents. Her enthusiasm and ability to bring out the best in kids has won her the love and admiration of more than one generation. Pat Beding eld came to LaBelle in Nov ember of 1978 from Sanford when her husband came here to work. "It was a big adjustment, believe me," she recalls But it wasn't long before her leadership and community interest took root. A longtime member of ABWA, she and Sandy Higdon started a chapter here a strong community organization that continues to support the women of LaBelle even now. Seeing that the youth of LaBelle needed structured activities, she soon became inv olved in establishing a YMCA here, which catered to youth for many years. Unwilling to let the concept fade away when the organization decided to end its LaBelle af liation, she took up the challenge and followed up with the LaBelle Youth Program Center. W ith that group, she offered structured activities for kids for many years until the failing economy took its toll. Pat's natural need for activity and sharing her own gifts led her to a passion she still enjoys and continues to pass on to youngsters. As president and director of the Country Rhythm Cloggers and Twirling Belles, Pat now has "grandcloggers" and "grandtwirlers" the children of former students. It's about relationships. In fact, she said over the years they all become like family. Many of her former students who have grown up and gone on with their lives still come back and clog with her when they can. For Pat it's not just about teaching kids to clog or twirl a baton, or play softball or cheerlead, it's about teaching them to be a leader. It's about bringing out the best in each child. She loves nothing more than helping a child develop personally. She wants her students not just to learn, but to have fun, form friendships, learn to perform and enjoy. Pat said she appreciates the honors that have come as a result of her enthusiastic support of the entire community Employee of the Year for the 20th Judicial Circuit) in 1985 and then again in 1995; Outstanding Administrator Service Award from the Florida Public Defender Organization in July of 2010; Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1985 from the LaBelle Chamber of Commerce but is really more interested in focusing on the kids. "I'm more of a behind the scenes person," she points out. Her dream would be to have huge recreation center for LaBelle with a pool and other amenities that would provide local kids with the opportunities other kids have. Travel teams are also high on her wish list. "I don't know what drives me," she commented, "other than I love to work with kids . to take a shy kid and cultivate their sel f esteem and con dence." She recalls growing up as a shy and backward child herself, and that becoming a majorette made all the difference for her. Being a majorette was one of the best things that ever happened to her, she said. It helped her develop showmanship and become a better, more con dent person. Retired from the 20th Judicial Circuit Public Defenders Of ce, Pat just doesn't slow down. She's a "doer" and that's one o f the things that has made her so beloved to so many people. When she sees something she feels should happen, she digs deep inside herself and makes it a reality. FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 5, 2014) – The Southwest Florida Community Foundation’s scholarship application process for the 2014-2015 school year will end on Saturday, March 1at midnight. Approximately $400,000 in scholarship money is available from 37 scholarships for local high-school seniors and 22 scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students from Lee, Charlotte, Glades, Hendry and Collier counties through the SWFLCF scholarship funds. Students interested in applying for a scholarship can access the E-Apply online scholarship application tool through the SWFLCF’s website at www. oridacommunity.com on the Scholarships page. Students can also nd a tutorial about how to create and submit the online application. Students may apply for multiple scholarships and are given the option to upload transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, letters of recommendation and nancial documentation (if required). For need-based scholarships, students are required to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. “Thanks to supportive donors who value the importance of post-secondary education, we offer a variety of scholarships including those for vocational or specialized training schools, as well as for attendance at colleges and universities,” said Anne Douglas, regional initiatives director for the SWFLCF. “In the past, we have had some scholarships that were not awarded because students did not apply for them, so we are trying to do our best to educate local students on the various types of funding available.” According to Douglas, examples of some of the more unique scholarships include support for students with disabilities, student athletes, adult students going back to school, students from particular schools or communities and students pursuing a graduate or professional degree. The SWFLCF launched the online application process Dec. 20, 2013, after receiving numerous calls from students who wanted to be able to work on scholarship application submissions during winter break. In 2013, the SWFLCF awarded nearl y $450,000 in scholarships. Founded in 1976, the Southwest Florid a Community Foundation supports the communities of Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Glades and Hendry counties and also acts as the regional convener and leader with rsthand knowledge of community needs. With assets of more than $72 million, the SWFLCF has provided more than $57 million in grants and scholarships to the communities it serves. During its 2013 scal year, the SWFLCF granted more than $4 million to more than 100 different organizations supporting education, animal welfare, arts, healthcare and human services. Everybody needs a good solid vehicle. Not everybody has great credit. The past few years have been tough on consumers, but if you need a good serviceable car, try EZ Cars. Located at 6345 SR 80W, EZ Cars is a quick drive out of LaBelle. Owner Chip Dorn has been there for ten years. He came here from Bonita Springs where he was in the pool business, because he liked the atmosphere and the river. A friend got him into the used car business and, as he says, “ever since then the wheels haven’t stopped!” In LaBelle for over 20 years, General Manager Randy Hamilton is a familiar sight to many in LaBelle, Randy said he’s been selling cars since he was in high school. “It’s been a good profession to me,” he added. The men agree that they are in the business of selling good transportation at a reasonable price. Each of their vehicles makes a stop at the mechanic before coming on their lot to make sure they are mechanically sound and to check their safety features. Their vehicles may be used, but each is always given a thorough check before it goes up for sale on their lot. They even test drive all their vehicles. “We want customers to come back,” the pair said, “and tell their friends.” Even with fewer trade-ins at the dealers these days, there’s a big variety of vehicles at EZ Cars cars, trucks, boats semis and consignment RVs so you’ll want to stop there and take a good look around. EZ Cars also provides a 60-day (or 1,000 mile) warranty on each vehicle they sell. At EZ Cars your typical car costs $10,000 and under and your typical down payment for a buyer with credit problems is around $2,400. Customers can expect a friendly greeting when they come on the lot, but no high pressure sales pitch. And with their Car Fax certi cation, buyers can look forward to peace of mind, because EZ Cars stands behind their vehicles. Ask about their guaranteed credit approval. They report to all three major credit bureaus so as long as you pay on time you can rebuild your credit and get reestablished. “This is not your average ‘buy here pa y here,’” Chip and Randy are quick to point out.
