dancing an exceptionally well-performed Riverdance routine. Presenter Jodi Bell assured the audience that “teaching is not the only talent we have in Hendry County.” Bell then introduced a special guest who came all the way from Tallahassee. Brian Dassler, Florida Department of Education’s deputy chancellor for Educator Quality, extended a warm greeting from the Department’s Commissioner, Pam Stewart, and Gov. Rick Scott. “Thank you for making Florida the best place for our students to learn,” said Gov. Scott through Dassler. Next, Deputy Superintendent Gordon Swaggerty Jr. presented the Heritage Award. In its third year, the Heritage Award was presented to Bo Davidson, a veteran Hendry County school board member. Davidson sat on the board for 32 y ears after he was appointed in November 1968. In those 32 years, Davidson never missed a meeting. Swaggerty calculated that Davis attended 768 meetings, not including special meetings, during his eight consecutive terms. The principals from each school introduced a student who has been in uenced by the nominated teacher. One by one, students recounted funny stories about moments in the classroom and relived the signi cant steps those teachers took to change that student’s life for the better. As the teachers accepted their awards and posed for a picture alongside their respective principal and student, the moment came when the Teacher of the Year would be announced. Superintendent Paul Puletti had the honor of announcing the outstanding teacher, but rst recounted a story about what makes Hendry County schools so special. Puletti said he recently walked into the administrative of ce of one school, and was greeted by the receptionist with, “Hey baby, what do you need?” Flattered by the receptionist’s compliment, he thought to himself that “he still had it.” What he didn’t realize was the kindergartner standing behind him to whom the receptionist was addressing. That, said Puletti, is what makes Hendry County schools so great. In that moment, he said, the kindergartner was the most important person in the room. Puletti gave up the podium for a moment to allow the 2014 Teacher of the Year to share her experiences representing Hendry County’s public schools. Keri Alford gave a heartwarming speech about her efforts as a teacher and said she was honored to have represented her school and humbled to have represented Hendry County. Puletti returned to the podium and asked for the “envelope, please.” The 2015 District Teacher of the Year was awarded to Kim Jordan, exceptional student education teacher at LaBelle Elementary School. The 13-year veteran teacher was moved to tears as she accepted the award. Jordan thanked her boss, who she said inspires her and requires more from her ever day -a quality that she appreciates and welcomes because it pushes her to become the best teacher she can be. Get serious about STD preventionNational Condom Week will be celebrated starting on Valentine’s Day, February 14February 21, 2014. It originally began as a local campaign at the University of California, Berkeley, in the 1970s. It has grown into a national effort to promote the use of condoms for protection against unwanted pregnancies, Sexually Transmitted Infections (formerly called STDs), and HIV infection. Abstinence, however, is the only 100 percent prevention. In observance of National Condom Week 2014, condom jars will be placed in participating local barber and beauty shops, drug stores, bars/lounges, tattoo parlors, gyms, and other. Use protection. Reduce your risks. For today’s college student, learning experiences are not limited just to classrooms and homework. Even the smallest of campuses have clubs and activities designed to help students reach their fullest potential. Whether by helping them discover their passions and strengths, connecting and assisting them to build relationships with others, or even providing them with content to add to their resumes, participation in student activities often gives students much more than they rst realize. Students who participate in extracurricular activities at the Edison State College Hendry Glades Center gain a better understanding of the inner workings of the college. They often have higher grade point averages, can adapt to deadlines, adhere to constructive criticism and are better at meeting priorities. They gain a sense of belonging and learn life skills that not only bene t their studies but also help them build lifelong relationships both at the Hendry Glades Center and with fellow students at other colleges throughout the state. Many also become leaders in the community. Currently, the Hendry Glades Center has ve opportunities for students to participate in student life: Student Government Association, Voices of Calvary, Gay-Straight Alliance, Science and Environmental Club and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. These clubs are available for all students with various interests and backgrounds, giving them the chance to connect with others. The clubs often work together to host campus events such as Haunted Campus at Halloween and collect goods for Thanksgiving baskets to share with their fellow students who are in need. These student clubs also extend past the doors of the Hendry Glades Center and into the community. These club members are always willing to lend a hand to those in need and to bring awareness that Edison State College is here to help. Throughout the school year, the club members participate in various communit y projects to help bene t the Ronald McDonald House, Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army, the Talkin’ Monkeys Project, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society and the Big Red Bus. The students often return from these projects having not only learned something new about their community but also about themselves. All college students should be encouraged to become active in their school’s student life. These activities help them expand on what they learn in the classroom and guide them in becoming more well-rounded adults. Jaimee Howard is the Student Life Coordinator at the Edison State College Hendr y Glades Center. Student activities are more than just fun and games We would like to thank everyone who contributed to Sophia’s Lil’ Miss Swamp Cabbage jar. Since 2004, the Department’s Of ce of Minority Health has coordinated partnerships, program development and other related efforts to address the health needs of Florida’s minority populations statewide. “Health equity means that all people have the opportunity to achieve their full health potential within their communities,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. “Our Of ce of Minority Health promotes health equity across every part of our agency and works with a dedicated liaison in each of Florida’s county health departments.” The Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Closing the Gap Grant Program is one of many efforts the Of ce of Minority Health uses to address health equity at the local level. This program awards grants to community organizations to improve health outcomes of racial and ethnic populations. The program currently focuses on the priority areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immunizations, HIV/ AIDS, maternal and infant mortality, and oral health. For the 2013-14 scal year, grants were awarded to 15 communitybased organizations with each organization receiving between $150,000 and $200,000. The Department works with Closing the Gap Grant Program awardees, through a competitive application process, to propose interventions and strategies that support, among other things, the Department’s Healthiest Weight Florida initiative. Only 36% of Floridians are at a healthy weight and the Department is working through public-private collaborations to bring together state agencies, not for pro t organizations, businesses, faith-based groups and entire communities to help Florida’s children and adults make consistent, informed choices about healthy eating and active living. The Of ce of Minority Health has ongoing partnerships with organizations such as the National Of ce of Minority Health, the Health Equity Research Institute, the Florida Council on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys and the National Conference on Preventing Crime in the Black Community. The Of ce of Minority Health works comprehensively across the Department to ensure that all of the Department’s programs and services for children, adults, and families are seen through the lens of health equity. The Department works to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts. Follow us on Twitter at @HealthyFla and on Facebook. Christ the King Lutheran Church invites the community of LaBelle to learn more about this religion which is ver y prevalent in our nation’s headlines. Join us for part two of our study of Islam. In part one, we studied the beliefs of Islam and how it came to be by using the Christian Bible. In part two, using the Holy Bible, we will defend the Christian Faith, look at Islamic assumptions about Christianity, the three phases o f jihad, and talking points for sharing our Christian hope with Muslims. This is a Bible stud y relevant and timely when we consider the many events shaping our world today. The dates for part two of this video/discussion study are for six Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. beginning on February 19 and the next ve Wednesdays culminating on March 26. A study guide will be e-mailed to you after the rst presentation of part two. Christ the King Church Lutheran Church is located mile west of State Route 29 on County Route 78. This year the ladies chose Abuse, Counseling and Treatment (ACT) women’s shelter opening in LaBelle and the local Veterans transportation service to VA facilities. Vicki Coley is the residential coordinator and Jennifer Benton CEO of ACT. Both women were present at the event and offered their appreciation for the fundraiser. Ms. Benton recalled that the previous women’s shelter closed in 2008 when the owner of the property passed away. Last year, ACT served 135 clients in Hendry-Glades, mostly through outreach. Of that number less than ten sought shelter from their situation because they would have had to go to Fort Myers to do so. The new facility will provide shelter for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human traf cking, along with their children. It will also serve as a rape crisis center, with a nurse practitioner available to do required forensics and a counselor on call. Plans for this new facility are still in the works. ACT received a grant for this new facility, which still acquires an additional $100,000 to complete. ACT is currently waiting for plans to be completed.

The Firehouse Community Theatre proudly presents Lend Me A Tenor, written by Ken Ludwig and directed by Deb Kik. This production is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Winner of three Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards, Lend Me A Tenor is set in September of 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Morelli a.k.a.”Il Stupendo”, the greatest tenor of his generation. Morelli is set to appear for one night only as Otello. However, the star arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. Saunders and his assistant, Max, believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Otello costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s “Il Stupendo”. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli awakens and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with “Il Stupendo!” A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter This hilarious show stars William Bart, Trevor Battams, Ericka Burke, Ashley Corbitt, Janice Groves, Tammar Hammer, Jeff Schmidt and Timmy Smith. 16 Caloosa Belle February 13, 2014 It’s dif cult for most Americans to fathom the simple “luxuries” so many people in other countries lack. For instance, for young girls in many parts of the world just going to school is out of reach, because, once a girl becomes a young woman her monthly period keeps her from attending approximately one week a month a major continuing interruption in their education. Here, a young woman just wraps up her soiled materials and throws them out. In so many countries, girls have to use whatever they have at hand. The LaBelle Woman’s Club is hoping to make over 500 special kits to send to young girls in need. These kits include a draw string bag, wash cloth, bar of hotel soap, eight absorbent annel pads and two moisture barrier shields to hold liners in place, a pair of panties size 10-16 and a visual instruction sheet with a gallon size zip lock bag. The members of the Woman’s Club are seeking colorful materials, cottons and dark annels, to sew into convenient and reusable liners. They are making these necessities every Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. at the Woman’s Club so they can get them to the Ocala Woman’s Club Chapter by June 1 for transport to Malawi in southeast Africa. If you have a little sewing experience you are welcome to come help. The ladies at the Woman’s Club would be thrilled to have it, So many people have bags or boxes of leftover material that would be perfect for this project and you can clear out some space in a closet at the same time! Of course, monetary donations are always welcome. For more information on the project, go to DayforGirls.com. Anyone who can sew, regardless of their level of expertise, is welcome to come out and help. You don’t even have to be a member of the Woman’s Club.
