by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle The January 28 Hendry County commission meeting included several public hearings. The board heard arguments from both staff and Kenneth Diaz, owner of four parcels adjacent to LaBelle Airport, on whether or not Mr. Diaz should be allowed access to the airport from those parcels. Arguments centered around an existing easement and FAA’s unwillingness to allow through-the-fence operations at airports. Mr. Diaz would like to develop his four parcels and believes he should have access through the existing easement. However, staff recommended denial of the request. Commissioner Don Davis, who served on the board of county commissioners in 1979 w hen the access was created was adamant that no easement had been reserved for properties on the south side of the airport. In the end, Commissioner Janet Taylor, seconded by Commissioner Michael Swindle, moved to grant access to the easement to Mr. Diaz. They included the stipulation that he return to the commission in April with a site plan and that he engage with the FAA and DOT on the plan. If he does not, then the offer will be void. In another public hearing, plans for a two-acre site on CR 833 to be used as a mining operation may continue. It had originally been approved several years ago, but the applicant was unable to complete the required site development plan. A new special exception process will be required for plans to continue. The board approved an amendment to the Agricultural Transitional District, to allow the remaining 771 lots which are less than the required ve acres in the Wheeler Estates area to have the vested rights determination process removed for these noncomforming lots. One more public hearing is required before this process can be approved. In other business:A uniform cemetery deed fee schedule will be decided. The next regular commission meeting will be 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, in Clewiston. Helping Handsby Amanda NelsonVolunteer. I know this can be a very scary word for many people. But before you stop reading, close your eyes, take a deep breath and give this a chance! Talk to y our child’s teacher to nd out how you can help make a difference. The teacher will appreciate the help and you will feel more connected to what is going on at school! I think most people link the words “school v olunteer” to “go into a classroom or help on a eld trip”. However, that doesn’t alw ays have to be the case. I’ve compiled a few ideas that just might help your child’s teacher out, and at the same time strengthen y our relationship with the school. Many of the following suggestions are geared more for the primary grades, but it also wouldn’t hurt to ask middle and high school teachers if there is anything you can do to help out. Of course, if you enjoy being at the school there are many things you can do on campus or in the classroom. For example: *Help design and/or put up a bulletin board set *Be a reading buddy (remember to ask questions during the reading to build uency and comprehension skills) *Practice reading and math skills with students using games and ashcards *Introduce and play board games *Assist during centers or recess *Aid students with make-up work *Make copies, laminate or le papers *Organize the classroom library *Assist students with typing and editing their work on the computer *Offer to come in and wipe down tables (this can never happen too often in the primary grades) *Sit with your child’s class at lunch to provide and extra set of eyes, ears and hands *Stop by to sharpen pencils and ll glue bottles *Join the PTO or PTA to help out the entire school *Help with eld days, dances and other school events *Around the holidays, lend a hand with messy craft projects (think glitter and paint) There are also things you can do at home that will certainly still help a teacher out! Try some of the following ideas while you’re watching television or waiting for that last load of laundry to dry if time is an issue: *Donate much needed supplies (ask teachers what they need) *Ask the teacher if there are any craft materials that you can cut, color or assemble *Sort papers or tear pages from workbooks *Sort items being used as manipulatives for counting and sorting activities *Provide a healthy snack (fruits/vegetables/crackers rather than cookies and cakes) *Record stories of favorite children’s books on CD’s for listening centers *Manage school book orders for the teacher Remember that this is just a sampling of ideas. There are so many ways you can help your child’s teacher as well as the entire classroom. So the next time you think about the word “volunteer” don’t panic! Donating just a short amount of your time, whether at home or at the school, can make a lasting difference. An extra set of hands are worth their weight in gold! People in America are struggling to make their nancial responsibilities come together. What is true all across our nation is especially felt for many throughout Hendry County and surrounding areas. It is essential to have management skills of money, and Godly wisdom to implement these principles. That is why Caloosa Baptist and First Bank, both in LaBelle, are going to be working together offering a class in nancial management based on Biblical teachings. The class begins on Wednesday, February 19, will be held in the Grace Building (formerly Flora & Ella's) from 6:7:15 each Wednesday night for nine weeks. Dave Ramsey put these materials together in course called, Financial Peace. It is designed to teach people God's way of handling money. The instructor will be Carey Soud, president of First Bank. The class format includes videos, class discussions, a workbook and interactive small group discussions. Participants will learn how to walk out of debt, build signi cant savings and leave a lasting legacy for their families, church and community. This training is excellent for young people just getting started, and older people looking to retire with dignity. The class materials are $90 per person (or couple) and include 9 DVD's (1 for each weeks study on Savings, Cash Flow planning, Dumping Debt, Role of Insurance, Giving, etc), a workbook, Dave's Book entitled a "Complete Guide to Money" and other materials. A limited number of scholarships are available. Those interested in participating in this training will need to preregister. Please call the church of ce at 675-HOPE (4673) to secure your spot. Manage money with God’s help As we approach the 2014 Tax season, I w ant to remind you that Identity Theft is one of the fastest growing crimes nationwide and refund fraud caused by identity theft is one of the biggest challenges facing the IRS. If you receive an IRS notice, and you suspect you have become the victim of identity theft; contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-906-4490, extension 245 right away so they can take steps to secure your tax account. Also, ll out the IRS Identity Theft Af davit Form 14039 and follow the directions on the back of the form that relate to your speci c circumstances. In addition, I recommend you take additional steps with agencies outside the IRS: Report the identity theft to the police and get a copy of your report. Close all accounts that may have been affected by the theft of your identity include accounts that may have been fraudulently opened. File an Identity Theft Complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Consider signing up with an identity theft protection service and hiring an accountant or enrolled agent to deal with the IRS identity theft issue on your behalf. Recently I lost my wallet in the parking lot at Save A Lot and realized it was missing when I went to the Dollar General. I could not nd it at the Save A Lot. I was calling all my credit care companies when a nice lady came to my door to return my wallet. I was so excited I forgot to ask her name. I'm happy to say that there are still honest people in LaBelle. Thank you again, Nice Lady! For all of the wonderful, kind words, the prayers, the visits, cards, phone calls, hugs and wonderful food, we say thank you. Everything was truly awesome. We send a very special thank you to all of the people who organized and worked so many hours planning and putting together the BBQ at the park. We are truly blessed to live in such a caring and loving community as LaBelle. Tommy would have loved being there, listening to the wonderful music and talking to his friends and family. I am sure he was smiling down from heaven that day. We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family. God has blessed us in so many ways. As a family we will try to pay all of the kindness that has been given to us forward to others. Sincerely, Linda O’Ferrell, John T. by Vanessa MosqueraLaBelle is a small town with a population of around 5,000 people. The closest movie theater is 34 miles away, and it takes about 45 minutes to drive to Florida Gulf Coast University at the southern edge of Fort Myers. The area is known for its hardworking people, cattle and citrus. It’s also the hometown of Chad Lutkenhaus. Lutkenhaus is a former FGCU basketball student-athlete who helped set the stage for the Dunk City phenomenon and is now the Director of Ticket Operations at the suddenly nationally-recognized school. His parents were the rst generation of his family to live in LaBelle, moving from Iowa to the Sunshine State before Chad was even born. While living in LaBelle – perhaps best known for producing the NFL placekicking Gramatica brothers – Lutkenhaus shined as a multi-sport athlete throughout his LHS Cowboy high school career. So much so, his is one of the prominent silhouettes displayed on the gymnasium wall. In his last two years at LaBelle High, he averaged 19.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game on the basketball court. He was a three-time MVP on the hardwood and also garnered two MVP awards for his gridiron accomplishments. His football team won a district championship, and he scored more than 1,500 points in basketball. Despite succeeding in both sports, his passion for basketball was greater. “I had a few talks about playing football collegiately, but I just liked basketball better. My mind was more steered to play basketball,” Lutkenhaus said. FGCU is one of the closest universities to LaBelle, so after a few visits and talks with the coaches, Lutkenhaus decided to stay close to his small-town roots. “Staying local was a top priority so that my family and the people from my hometown could come and watch,” the former guard said. “It helped a lot. It’s pretty cool to have your friends there.” Lutkenhaus was a student-athlete at FGCU from 2007 to 2011, a member of FGCU’s inaugural Division I basketball team in 2007-08. During his four years, he played in more than 100 games, serving as team co-captain during his junior and senior seasons. He also shared the court with a few of the players who were on the Eagles’ historic NCAA Sweet Sixteen unit last March. When Lutkenhaus played, the Sweet Sixteen was nothing but a dream. As a new D-I member, the NCAA mandates a four-year reclassi cation period, which banned FGCU from postseason play. “We were in the Division I transition stage, so we took some lumps and some beatings. That part was tough, but the whole student-athlete experience was awesome,” Lutkenhaus said. “Going to play at the likes of Kansas, Michigan State, Indiana and all of those schools that I never would’ve dreamed of going to was great.” Lutkenhaus graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication and a minor in interdisciplinary studies in the spring of 2011. He then landed his rst job at FGCU as the Ticket Of ce Assistant. He knew then-ticket director Matt Collver from his time with the basketball program, and that helped lead him to even knowing about the job. “It was just kind of luck. I interviewed for it, and I got it,” the 25-year-old Lutkenhaus said. “It kept me in athletics and close to the people that were here when I played. I kind of knew everyone so it was a pretty easy transition.” In September of 2013, after he had the opportunity to work on site during the magical NCAA tourney games in Philadelphia and Dallas, Lutkenhaus was promoted to his current role as Director of Ticket Operations when his supervisor left for a job at Auburn. He now oversees all ticket sales for the seven FGCU sports which are ticketed. He also assists with season and group sales, ticket marketing and in-game activities, as well as supervises his old full-time position and 8-10 student employees. His of ce is also responsible for special event ticketing at Alico Arena, such as graduations, concerts, and speakers. According to Lutkenhaus, ticket sales are up across the board. Men’s Basketball season ticket holders are up 700 percent, and sellouts have become the norm, rather than the exception. Likewise, the women’s team still averages nearly 2,000 per game, which is amongst the Top 50 such attendance marks nationally. Although Lutkenhaus arrived at FGCU when the program had just started taking off, he has seen it grow and become what it is now. “I remember coming to a game at FGCU in 2005. There were probably less than 500 or 600 people here,” he said. “Now we’re regularly turning people away because of sellouts.” A big-time responsibility for a small-town guy.
