Parents of children at the Mira Verde preschool center became highly upset when they were told the center would be closing. Tightening budgets and lower enrollment had made the facility impractical to operate. The Mire Verde center, and others like it, represent the rst real effort to assimilate the children of many agricultural laborers into American culture. Kids in Kindergarten, rst, second and third grades, whose rst language isn't English, are often at lower vocabulary levels and need help to be able to absorb lessons as they progress through school. Parents understand this and were concerned that their children will miss a vital part of their education. Meeting with some 30 parents, Ms. Mainster said her organization has absorbed $1.2 million in cuts to its Head Start program. In fact, three RCMA Head Start centers in Florida have been closed. These cuts have taken a big toll in RCMA. Ms. Mainster noted that the center has incurred a $15,000 de cit for the past three months. For 13 years, the Mira Verde development off Cowboy Way has met the needs of agricultural worker families. The last three or four years, however, the preschool center has not been lled. There are two sources of funding for the center: Head Start (which is for low income families and serves 37 kids; the other source RCMA preschools merge Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantVeterans DayAmerican Legion Post 130 Commander Matt Kindermann stood to assist Viet Nam veteran and VFW 10100 Commander Bobby Middleton as he delivered heart-felt comments on the importance of Veterans Day. In his own comments, Commander Kindermann pleaded for an all encompassing welcome for all veterans. He noted the “changing face” of American’s veterans, to include all ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds. He also touched on modern intricate world relations saying that today, those countries American engages with are less likely to be deemed “enemies” as partners against the extremists in their countries. Only a few youngsters were in attendance. It was 10-year-old Chase Burdick’s rst Veterans Day ceremony. He said he wanted to come to recognize the country’s veterans who, he said, later continue to serve their communities as police of cers, re ghters and so on. He said he wanted to thank them for what they did, ghting for our right to be free. Besides diamonds there are many choices in the precious, semi-precious and costume department as well. I found sparkly rings, bracelets, necklaces, slides, pins. I found "bling" on ip- ops. I found it all. Antique and collectible pieces are available in several shops. Lives are funny things. They can be changed by just about anything, even simple things like a wrong turn or being a few minutes late. Just when you think you’re headed one way, something intervenes and it all gets turned around. That’s what happened to Mary Cosmo, a long time resident of Pioneer Plantation. She started out thinking she’d get into accounting. Now look at her she’s Hendry County’s newest attorney. She grew up “in the boonies,” and attended Clewiston High School for a while, although she graduated in Hallandale, Florida. In 2006 she was on the path to a career in accounting, enrolled at Hodges University w hen she took on a research paper for an English class about a proposed new coalred power plant to be built in the southeastern corner of Glades County, also known as the headwaters to the Everglades. Mary’s research paper was the switch that sent her life off in a very different direction. Mary’s research lead her to the Public Service Commission in Tallahassee, Florida, where she gave testimony regarding her ndings. Mary said it was at that hearing when she realized that the public interest was not “evenly” represented. The opposing side had a long line of attorneys and staff yet the public had two attorneys. Although the public was represented, it was the perception that “Big Money” has all the power and the proverbal people have no voice. Unfortunately, this perception becomes the norm in rural areas and is seen as a huge disparity in the law as the people’s voice gets muf ed by the sounds of big money. Mary partnered with one of the local grass roots organization involved, Save It Now Glades, which helped even the scales of justice by giving a voice to the average person. After testifying at the Public Service Commission, Mary changed her major to legal studies and continued at Hodges where she earned an Associate degree in paralegal and a Bachelor’s degree in legal studies in 2009. However, that was not enough; she knew she had to become a lawyer to really make a difference. So she went on to Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville. After her second year in Jacksonville, she’d been gone too long and wanted to be home, so she nished her last two semesters as a visiting student at Ave Maria School of Law. As a visiting student, Mary drove 60 miles to Ave Maria’s law school campus in Naples from Clewiston, for a total of 120 miles each day. Mary said her “2001 Toyota Camery is a road warrior with over 260,000 miles and still going.” She also said that when you live in a rural area you learn that driving is a part of life if you ever want get anywhere. Mary graduated in May 2013, from Florida Coastal School of Law with a Juris Doctor. Mary passed the Florida Bar earlier this year. On November 4, County Judge James D. Sloan administered the oath of of ce to Mary in front of members of her family and friends. Clearly approving, Judge Sloan said he doesn’t often have an opportunity to welcome a new member to “this honorable profession.” In fact he said he’s only sworn in ve or six new attorneys during his 20+ years on the bench. “You’re about to enter a very honorable profession,” he told the new attorney, “and I rmly believe it is an honorable profession.” His advice was just to “do the best job you can.” As a newly admitted attorney, Mary rst thanked her supporters, in particular “the best mom in the world.” Mary said she has been blessed by the people in her life and she recalled how that one research project changed her life. Her very proud mother, also named Mary, said she never had any doubt that her daughter could do it, once she made up her mind. “She’s always been determined and focused.” Mary’s mother said she can recall how Mary “studied and studied.” Mary’s practice area will include general law and family law matters. Mary said she plans to bring a professional outlook with a hometown feel into her new calling. Her career isn’t the only way Mary is reaching out to others. She is also teaching the courtroom process to 4-H’ers through mock trials by role playing as attorneys, witnesses, judges and juries. For Mary, her 4-H Club is about being a role model teaching rural kids they can be anything they want as long as they are willing to work for it and sharing the knowledge that small towns do not limit opportunities. It’s a way to pass on the life lessons provided to her by local adults when she was growing up. As an attorney, Mary will would like to focus on the public interest, family law, criminal law, wills and estates and land use. She is looking forward to using her hard-earned knowledge to make her community better for everyone. 2 Caloosa Belle November 14, 2013 Pioneer Plantation resident is county’s newest attorneyis for low income working families. It is this latter category that is lacking. The tiny center at Mira Verde had just 37 kids not enough to break even, creating a de cit for the past three years. Richman Property Services, Inc., offered to fund an after school program in the room used by Head Start. RCMA will bus the Head Start kids to the center on SR 29, which will take children from the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) class. The Krome Center, on West Cowboy Way, will absorb the rest. The center director will move over to SR 29 center; no teachers will lose their jobs. “I understand that no one likes change,” Ms. Mainster said, but the numbers just couldn’t be worked out in order to keep the Head Start program there. She said only 20 of the 37 students served at the center live at Mire Verde. The rest come in from outside the development. Parents who live outside the development are already transporting their kids and will continue to do so, only to one of the other centers. RCMA will coordinate teaching, curriculum, etc., for the after school program, while Richman will contribute $15,000. College students will be paid to tutor the students. Ms. Mainster said RCMA may also ask United Way to assist. Richman Property Services has 63 properties throughout Florida, but Mire Verde is the only one with an RCMA location. Vice President of Property Operations Jessica Daugherty said that most of their properties are “affordable, based on 60 percent of the area’s medium income.” RCMA Continued From Page 1 be that perfect unique gift. What about a watch for your favorite gal or guy? The choices are many. Okay, I’m heading out the door to do some more shopping. I’m looking for things I haven’t mentioned yet. I know they are here; I just have to nd them. TreasuresContinued From Page 1 Caloosa Belle/ Paty BrantNew attorney Mary Cosmo is sworn in by County Judge James D. Sloan. Customer transactions are getting easier all the time. Credit cards, debit cards, electronic debit cash and checks are almost not necessary these days. That’s handy for the customer and the merchant. Swipe technology is easy, but it can also be confusing for the business owner. It can also be more expensive than it has to be, according to Steve Cooper, Natinoal Sales Director for Prestige Biz Solutions. Steve and Gabby Cooper are currently seeking businesses interested in lessening their credit card processing fees. All that is very well, but Steve says many merchants don’t know how to read their statements and that can cost them money. The credit cards being used by their customers may be from a “local” bank The local bank does not complete the processing of these cards, but passes it on to another In short, both banks get a cut of the transaction fee. That means, the merchant is paying two fees instead of one. Prestige Biz Solutions works directly with a processing company. A Prestige Biz solution customer will use a VeriFone Vx570, which relies on a lightning fast processor and built in thermal printer to handle debit, credit and EBT payments. It can also accommodate value added applications such as prepaid services, gift cards and loyalties. It works on dial or high speed broadband and is easy to use. The customer can enter their own PIN and the equipment can be used to download applications from a USB Flash memory card. Steve Cooper has been in the business for three years and is extending his territory to LaBelle from Fort Myers. The couple has joined the LaBelle Chamber of Commerce. His advice to businesses when it comes to credit cards is to “know your bottom line your effective rate.” He offers a free analysis of your transaction statement and is con dent he can get your effective rate below two percent. People need to realise that credit card transactions go through multiple banks, each of which gets a cut. Prestige Biz Solutions goes directly to the processing company. Gabby is reaching out to the Hispanic community, in particular, bridging the gap to include the entire community. Steve also said that Precision Biz Solutions is also hiring in sales and can train interested workers. Rates vary widely since the industry is not policed or regulated at this time, meaning companies can charge whatever they want. Worse, often merchants don’t even know what these fees are. It can get very complicated and all are coded different. A quick way to decipher them: Divide all your processing fees into your credit volume for your monthly amount is effective rate. If you “Shop your money,” he said you can cut your transaction rate by .5 percent. He said area rates can be up to 3.5-4 percent, and he’s seen them elsewhere as high as 7-8 percent. He’d like you to just take advantage of a free analysis and compare rates and see if he can do better for you. One thing you can do to protect yourself is not to lock yourself into a long term commitment with a company. Prestige Biz Solutions will bring equipment a VeriFone Vx570 to slide card Visa and Master Card, Discover cards. Your lease for the machine depends on your credit volume. They also have wireless equipment for business transacted outside of a traditional store. Steve said their job is to educate merchants on how to read their statements. A rewards program is built right into the Dejavoo software, no additional software downloads, no loyalty processor or host communication required! Customer’s earn points for dollars spent at the merchants store. The merchant decides on the points per dollar threshold (For Example: spend $1 get 1 point), what the reward is going to be (For Example: Free Large Coffee) and the point the customers need to earn in order to receive that reward (For Example: Earn 100 points and get a Large Coffee). Reward Cards are not necessary! Merchant’s manage the program at the terminal level. You can go to got xrates.com to research Prestige Biz Solutions. Call him at 678-609-8472 or go to gotxrates.com. The public health system is de ned as the wide range of public, private and voluntary organizations such as governmental agencies, school systems, health care providers, hospitals, law enforcement, community-based organizations, local associations, businesses and individuals. The function of this broad system framework is to work together collectively to improve the health of the community. The following diagram shows how we are all connected to each other within the local public health system: Some speci c responsibilities of the entire public health system are to: Prevent epidemics and the spread of disease Protect against environmental hazards and prevent injuries Promote and encourage healthy behaviors Assure the quality and accessibility of health services Respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery The core functions of the public health system include: Assessment: Making regular, systematic collection, assembly, analysis and distribution of information on the health of the community, including statistics on health status, community health needs, and epidemiological and other studies of health problems. Policy development: Using the scienti c knowledge to assist in the decisionmaking about public health and taking a strategic approach to leadership for public health policy. Assurance: Engaging policy-makers, community partners, businesses and the public to help determine what level o f services are needed in the community. There are ten essential public health services and they are derived from the speci c responsibilities and core functions which include: 1. Monitoring health status within the community 2. Diagnosing and investigating health problems and health hazards 3. Informing, educating and empowering people about health issues 4. Mobilizing community partnerships to identify and solve health problems 5. Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health 6. Enforcing laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety 7. Linking people to needed personal health services 8. Assuring a competent public health and personal health care workforce 9. Evaluating the effectiveness, accessibility and quality of health services 10. Conducting research for innovative solutions to health problems The Public Health Wheel best illustrates the relationship among core functions, speci c responsibilities and the ten essential public health services. There will always be challenges in rural communities. If we work collectively as a communit y and strengthen our partnerships, we can make improvements to the overall health and safety of our communities! Do you know: What is a Public Health System? Filled with vivid imagery, apocalyptic visions and mysterious gures, Revelation is one of the most intriguing books in Scripture. We read it wondering, “Who is the Beast? The Lamb? The Dragon? When will all this take place?” It leaves us with a number of questions. But, as its name implies, Revelation is intended to REVEAL the divine mysteries to us. It pulls back the veil of heaven and shows us the glories of the Kingdom of God. And in midst of this vision we discover something amazing. We see how our faith, our liturgy, and our worship are a participation in the liturgy of heaven. In Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come you will learn the keys to understanding this mysterious book. You will see how heaven is made mystically present to us in the Mass. You will see how the images and events of Revelation make sense in light of our Catholic faith. Most importantly, you will learn how the book of Revelation can be a source of inspiration and encouragement as we strive to live our faith in the world. Join us for Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come at Our Lady Queen of Heaven in the Parish Of ce beginning January 9, at 7 p.m. and continuing every Thursday until April 3, 2014. For more information or to register for the study call Eric Myer at (863) 517-1096. Registration is until December 15. The Army Interactive Semi-trailer came to LaBelle High School on October 28, 2013. A rmy Recruiter Staff Sergeant Nunez and other Army representatives met students outside to begin the tour with old fashioned, military style pull ups. AVID classes, English Language Learner classes, juniors and seniors then entered the climate controlled, 18-wheel tractor-trailer, to engage in the classroom mode and learn about the Army’s 150 plus career possibilities. After the classroom mode, students experienced interactive engagement systems and interactive videos. Mr. Roquett, LHS Principal, toured the semi with students to get an idea of how students enjoyed the experience. Students shared that the experience was very informative and that it was going to help them make career and educational decisions. Students also felt like they were sitting in a mobile movie theatre. From his own personal experience, Mr. Roquett felt the presentations were very well put together and that he is proud that LHS is so strongly supported by the U.S. Army and that LHS continues to be a strong supporter of the United States Military.
