As Ag Science teacher at Clewiston High School for 18 years, he perpetuated a strong agriculture department and led his students to state and national FFA recognition. This is his second y ear there. He said the department doubled during his rst year there and continues to grow and thrive. Entering the local political eld is something Mr. Swindle said he's always felt he w ould like to do at some point. "I just didn't think the opportunity would come this soon." He said he's excited to work with all the citizens of Hendry County and with the board. He said he's ready "to help continue the board's good work so our sons and daughters can have bright futures here." He is looking forward to doing his part to make this community a success, based on moral and ethical principles. He believes the commission is "going in the right direction" and wants to help implement "doable regualtions" and improve safety. He hopes to work with the school board toward high quality education and make sure that agriculture remains stable today and viable into the future. With his experience, he feels he can help agriculture maintain good relations through using BMPs, responsible water discharge and continuing to be good stewards of the land. He said he did not expect this appointment but sees it as an opportunity to make a contribution to his county by sharing his perspective with the county and all its stakeholders. His vision is to attract business, promote growth and make Hendry County a better place for big and small businesses. He is looking forward to beginning the learning process and feels welcome in the company of many county commissioners, department heads and employees he has known for years. He added, "I feel honored that the Governor has faith in me." be created during its 18-month construction. The exemption begins in 2016. Farm to school programs are thriving in not only rural, but also urban districts in every state, with 43 percent of public school districts reporting having a farm to school program in place and an additional 13 percent committed to launching a farm to school program in the near future. In Florida, 78% percent of school districts reported participating in farm to school activities or planning to start a program in the near future. The Census results give us a national snapshot of how schools are connecting w ith local farmers, ranchers and small businesseseverything from bringing healthy foods into the cafeteria and holding taste tests of local products to helping to plant school gardens and hosting eld trips to local farms. USDA's Farm to School program helps to make these activities possible through research, training, technical assistance, and grants to schools and states. Beyond that, farm to school programs support the work of parents, teachers, school nutrition professionals and local communities as they raise a healthier next generation of Americans. Research shows that children in schools with farm to school programs eat more fruits and vegetables and are more willing to try and eat the new, healthy foods served in school breakfasts, lunches and snacks positive steps in the forward in the ght against childhood obesity. I look at farm to school as an investment not only in the health of America's students, but as an investment in the health of local economies. Studies show that the economic multiplier effect of buying from local businesses can be between two and three times higher than from non-local businesses, and farmers, ranchers and small businesses that participate in farm to school programs are reaping the rewards. There is plenty of room for growth 56 percent of school districts that already have farm to school programs plan to spend even more on local purchases in the coming school year. Fruits, vegetables, milk, baked goods and herbs top the list of local products offered in schools across the country, but we also anticipate growth in beans and other legumes, grains and our, meat and poultry, and eggs. In Florida, school districts spent an average of 11% percent of food budgets buying local, to the tune of more than $29 million. Farm to school is core to USDA's commitment to help farmers, ranchers and businesses take advantage of market opportunities in local and regional foods. We coordinate our work under the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative, which has helped increase the number of farmers markets to more than 8,100 nationwide, a 67 percent growth since 2008. We've invested in local food infrastructure from cold storage facilities, to processing plants, to food hubs that aggregate products from many farms and help smaller producers reach larger buyers. As a result, there are over 200 food hubs in operation nationwide today. Our efforts to promote economic development and job creation are having a positive impact in communities across America. But none of this can continue without a comprehensive Farm Billa critical piece of legislation that provides certainty to millions of hardworking families. It's time for Congress to pass a long-term, comprehensive bill that continues building a strong agricultural economy and ensures healthy, affordable food for America's children and families. Kevin Concannon is USDA's Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services. Check out the Farm to School Census results at www.fns.usda.gov/farmtoschool/ census and visit www.usda.gov/knowyourfarmer for more information about USDA's efforts to support local and regional market opportunities for America's farmers and ranchers. Drive 4 UR School at Langford Ford Homecoming Week at LaBelle High School is rapidly approaching! Homecoming Week begins on Monday, November 4 and ends with our annual Homecoming Dance on Saturday, November 9. Each day at LHS will be special with theme days, trivia contests, and nighttime events. Monday is “Blast from the Past” day as we turn back the hands of time. Are you ready to walk like an Egyptian? What about dress like the Roaring 20’s or the Hippies from the 60s? The rest of the year these fashions may be out of date, but today even the Poodle Skirt is back in style. Tuesday is the always popular “Sports’ Day”. Everyone wears the apparel of their favorite team. The Dolphins, Bucs, Braves, Marlins, even the San Diego Padres; they’re all good today! Wednesday w ill bring out the character in all of us…literally! On “Character Day” students will dress like their favorite cartoon character, movie character, or book character. You may see Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader, or even Winnie the Pooh. For Thursday, we had trouble making up our minds so we combined to make it Opposite Day / Mismatched Day. Do you w ant to dress like your opposite personality? Be somebody you are not? What about clothes that don’t match? You know the “opposite” of what should be worn together. Today, be the anti-you. Friday is traditionally “Spirit Day” and the time to show your Cowboy pride. Proudly wear the red and white colors of LaBelle high School. There will be a pep rally in the gym at the end of the day w ith a chance for each class to show which one has the most school spirit. This is just the beginning though, as we have a lot more planned for Homecoming W eek. Wednesday November 6, we will play the annual and extremely popular Girls PowderPuff football games on the LHS football eld. The fun begins at 6:00 pm with a second set of games tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The girls check their manners at the gate and come in ready to play hard. The action begins with the Freshmen girls taking on the Sophomore girls. The girls in class of 2017 get to play in the games for the rst time ever instead of just watching from the stands. Are they too much for the Sophomores? You can nd out for just a small admission fee of $2 per person. The nal game of the night features the Junior girls and the Senior girls. How hungry for victory are the Seniors in their last game? Are the J unior girls ready? Will there be a championship round? But what is this rumor about the female members of the LHS Faculty playing against the girls’ winner? So many questions and they will all be answered on this funlled evening. Vendors will be selling hot dogs, Frito pies, drinks, baked goods and much more. Fun and food for the whole family! Come and join us. On Thursday, November 7, the boys get into the action with the increasingly popular Boys volleyball games. Bragging rights for the entire year are at stake in these events. Last year we featured these games during the school day and it was a great success! We will continue that new tradition this year. Starting in the gym at approximately 10:20 the Senior boys will take on the Junior boys. These young men have met for the last two years, and this is the last chance for the Seniors. Who are the big dogs and who should have stayed on the porch? This game will likely go all three games to decide a champion At 1:25 the Freshman boys take on the Sophomore boys. The Freshmen have been waiting a long time to show how good they are. Are they for real or just a lot of hype? Family and friends are welcome to join in all of the fun for just the low price of $1 per person for each game. Friday students will enjoy music in the cafeteria during all lunches. DJ Drae of Midnight Sun Entertainment has graciously agreed to come during the day to meet the students and play music during all lunches. This will be like no other lunchtime at school this year. On Friday at 4 p.m, there will be the annual Homecoming Parade down Main Street and into Barron Park. There will be class oats, Homecoming Court members, an honored alumnus, and a few surprises. Come and join in the fun!! At 7:30 the annual Homecoming football game will begin against rival Moore Haven High School. Halftime will feature the introduction of the Homecoming Court and the crowning of the King and Queen. This is sure to be a very special night. Homecoming Week concludes Saturday night with the Homecoming Dance. This year’s theme is “Night on the Nile.” Members of Student Government will transform the LaBelle High School cafeteria into a pyramid of fun suitable for a Pharaoh and his Queen. The Dance is a semiformal event and tickets go on sale October 28. Be sure to buy them before the Dance for the low price of just $15.00 each. Tickets will be available at the door on the night of the event, but the price goes up to $25.00 each. Contact Mr. Greenleaf at 674-4120 for more information. Kim Hamilton, Senior Assistant to State Representative Matt Hudson, has been a long time friend and volunteer at the educational primate sanctuary, so when she was invited to join the Board, she quickly accepted the position. Dr. Deborah Misotti, founding director and President of the Board, was thrilled to w elcome a new active member to help with the evolution of the project. Dr. Deb stated, “The future of The Talkin’ Monkeys Project is already mapped, in as much as Hendry County has allowed us to add the proviso to extend the original Special Exception from 2003 to remain in place for the next owners w hich will be Florida Gulf Coast University. The development of the infrastructure and possible expansion of the project itself w ill be a process in which we hope to inv olve Kim Hamilton. Her deep love for the primates and interest in the community will be a huge bene t to our charity. “ When The Talkin’ Monkeys Project planned their move to this area twelve years ago, the idea of becoming more than a mere primate sanctuary was a dream. Over time, the project has evolved into a signi cant educational resource for the community and continues to evolve. Home schooled children from the area have worked at the project on science and social projects. Today, the project draws students from around the world and is a Service Learning Center for FGCU and Edison College. They are consultants for the Florida Wildlife Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The educational primate sanctuary is connected to many international conservation organizations worldwide. This local, low pro le organization is involved in investigations of ape traf cking internationally, as well as nationally here in the United States. They have cooperated with both Lee County and Hendry County on the apprehension and prosecution in cases involving wildlife, even going so far as to plan and execute a sting operation recentl y to apprehend two young men who had stolen two valuable apes from a home in Nebraska. The young rescued apes are living at the sanctuary now, until the investigation is complete. The organization is looking forward to a brighter future with Kim Hamilton on the Board. We can all look forward to seeing more signi cant activities for the community to enjoy from The Talkin’ Monkeys Project in the future. They plan to offer lectures from international speakers on conservation and some exciting fund raisers are being planned! Talkin’ Monkeys adds a new board member
