The following is a response by Hendy County Administrator Charles Chapman, regarding questions about the county commission’s concerns about continuing transportation for veterans to medical appointments. (FHREDI) announced that broadband services in Okeechobee County are now a reality, with services in Desoto, Glades, Highlands and Hendry Counties and the Community of Immokalee to follow soon. The plan for a broadband network is clearly coming into focus for the area, through the Florida Rural Broadband Alliance (FRBA). FHREDI is setting the stage for a very powerful set of circumstances and tools to attract an entire offering built around broadband speed and capacity. Broadband enables a higher quantity and quality of information to be transmitted and provides a surplus of capacity to upload and download multimedia content to meet today’s networking needs. Broadband has become so vital to local community and economic development that it is being termed a necessary utility (along with electricity, water, natural gas and telephone). FRBA will offer service to anchor institutions, such as schools, libraries, hospitals and local governments as well as Internet Serv ice Providers. Broadband speeding ahead

BOCC Continued From Page 1 V ets Continued From Page 1 record, to answer the questions being presented and to report the actions requested by County Staff please nd the following points: 1. A letter was sent to the DAV stating that current funding levels for this scal year had been depleted; 2. In the same letter it was noted that on J uly 23rd we would be asking the Board of County Commissioners for additional funds to nish this scal year; 3. The agenda item before the Board of County Commissioners on July 23rd provides the following recommendations A ) Approve the funding, and authorize the County Administrator to revise the current terms and conditions of the contract with the DAV. B) Revise the current terms and conditions in inter-local agreements with the City of LaBelle and the City of Clewiston; and C) Initiate conversations regarding inter-local agreement with Glades County and the City of Moore Haven to enhance services (Veteran Transportation Services). In no way does this agenda item present an action to "cancel" services to our veterans in need. This agenda item and the intent from my executive of ce is to improve and enhance the transportation system to Veterans to its fullest and ef cient level possible. It is our intent to enter into a new contractual arrangement with the DAV. will note, the current contractual language with the DAV stipulates that we must provide a 60-day notice of termination of the agreement by August 1st or become obligated for another scal year to the same terms. It is not my intent nor my recommendation to the Board to terminate a relationship with the DAV, we wish to provide a notice so we may renegotiate the terms of our relationship and enter into a new contractural arrangement, not eliminate the Veteran's transportation program.

Some people hunt deer, some hunt turkeys, and then some hunt hogs. I am another type of hunter, however. I hunt illustrations to help me add clarity to my sermons. I started that practice because I have four presentations a week to make at my church w here I serve as a pastor. Of the hundreds of quotes, stories and other materials I have used I cannot think of one that knocked me out like the following story. I have used in various congregations and I never made it through without feeling a need to get over myself and get back to investing into others. See what you think. As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very rst day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, w as a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the y ear before and noticed that he did not play w ell with the other children, that his clothes w ere messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson w ould actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X 's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his le, she was in for a surprise. Teddy's rst grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners... He is a joy to be around.." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled. His mother has a terminal illness and life at home is a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken." Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class." Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and was ashamed of herself. She felt worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she sti ed the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to." After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets.." A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had nished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had. Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had. Then four more years passed and another letter came. He explained that after he nished his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter said she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD. The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and that he had no family. He was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing and made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together. They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, "Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference." Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you." So are you thinking about what has given you to put into the lives of others? It is His gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to Him. It's your call.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located across the street from City Hall in Highway 80. So… maybe it’s time to get over yourself? Les Morgan by Pat DobbinsNow is the time to get your children vaccinated for the next school year! Parents can take their children to the health department now to receive the shots they need for school, but they can also take them to their private health care provider. If parents decide to wait until just before school starts, they might have to wait in line if there is a "rush" of folks waiting until the last minute to get their children vaccinated. "It is important for parents to make sure their children are vaccinated," said Pat Dobbins, Administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties. "That's how individual children are protected, as well as the entire school." The rst day of school will approach quickly. Parents need to make sure their children have received the proper immunizations as required by law. Health Departments can provide school vaccinations (free of charge) for children from infants through the age of 18. Students entering kindergarten are required to have the following vaccinations: (5) DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis): If the 4th DTaP vaccine is administered on or after the fourth birthday, a 5th DTaP is not required. (5) Polio: If the 4th dose is administered on or after the fourth birthday, a 5th dose is not required. (2) MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) (3) Hepatitis B (2) Varicella (Chickenpox) Students entering 7th grade must receive a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) booster. Immunizations are available at the following locations: Hendry County Health Department: Clewiston 1100 South Olympia St, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. LaBelle 1140 Pratt Blvd, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Glades County Health Department: Moore Haven 1021 Health Park Drive, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday If your child has received immunizations at a different location or in other cities or states, it is very important that you take all shot records for your child to your health department or healthcare provider too avoid delays or duplications. Barron Library’s ‘Florida Tracker’ program was a huge success with an attendance of well over 1,300. The children explored the state of Florida, starting in the Everglades and ending in Tallahassee, through the eyes of our own ‘Ponce de Leon.” He and his sidekick offered fun facts about all nine stops in a very entertaining way. There were nine guest presenters from Hendry County who all brought very special programs about their work and passions, covering a wide range of topics including, bees, monkeys, cowboy life, Seminole art/culture, fossils, alligators and agriculture. Thank you to Allen and Patty Register for the great presentation they made about their work at Gatorama. The kids, and adults, are always so excited for the opportunity to get up close and personal with the gators. You will want to be sure and visit Gatorama during their upcoming hatching festival. Who wouldn’t want to hold an egg while the baby gator hatches? Check their website, www. gatorama.com, for dates and times. Thank you to Gene and Donna McAvoy from the Hendry County Extension Of ce, for the nal session in which they presented a lesson about all the varieties of fruits and vegetables grown in the state of Florida, and the importance they are to the economy of the state. Following the presentation, everyone moved outside for a huge party, celebrating the 500th birthday/anniversary of the state of Florida. Everyone enjoyed carnival games, relays, craft projects, birthday cake and other goodies. A special thank you to McDonalds of LaBelle for furnishing drinks for the big event and also to the Swamp Cabbage Committee for a generous donation that was used for the other refreshments and games. The library also wishes to offer a huge than k you to all of the high school volunteers who helped every week with the program. We couldn’t have done it without you. Bridge Street LaBelle, FL 33935 (863) 675-0224THANK YOU OAKBROOK STAFF!My wife and I are tremendously grateful to the staff of Oakbrook Rehabilitation Center of LaBelle, and want them to know how much we appreciate them. We also want everyone to know how pleased we are. Mr. Anthony J. Tozer, a WW II veteran, spent the last three years of his life as one of their patients. He went to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 20th, at the age of ninety. The staff at Oakbrook treated him like he was family. As a matter of fact, I was moved to see tears in the eyes of many of them, as the “nal moment came. They not only assisted him with all his physical needs since he fractured a hip, but they made Mr. Tozers social life some of the best of his later years. In other words, the entire staff endeavored to make his quality of life the best it could be, and they de“nitely succeeded. Also, when it became obvious that he was in his “nal hours, the kindness that was shown to him and the family members present was overwhelming. No doubt, it speaks well of Oakbrooks management, but even more highly of the quality of the dedicated and loving people that work directly with the patients. Thank you very much, Oakbrook staff. by Sarah LappFrom the moment Pastor James Holden broke the preaching-from-behind-a-pulpit stereotype and addressed the congregation on center stage with the Bible being his only script, the people of Carlson knew they were getting into something great. On Sunday, July 7, Holden began his w ork as Carlson’s Senior Pastor. He, along w ith his wife Christy and children, William (6 years) and Mary Elizabeth (two years), moved from Fort Myers. Holden received a Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. Other alma matters include Michigan State Univ ersity, Thomas University (Bachelors in Psychology), and Valdosta State University (Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy.) Holden migrated from his native Ohio to Georgia in 1997 to begin his pastoral ministry through Dixie United Methodist and Ozell United Methodist. In 2003 Holden moved to Florida and met his wife Christy at Asbury Theological Seminary in Orlando. He married, and then pastored Christ United Methodist in Leesburg and most recently Grace United Methodist (with campuses in Fort Myers Shores and Cape Coral.) “Grace is a mega-church, with about 1,800 in worship every Sunday at the Cape Coral campus. It is one of the 15 largest churches in the nation. “I was one of four Associate Pastors. During my time there, I learned how a church can be vital in creative ways, to build the Kingdom of God,” Holden said. In March of 2013, Holden was appointed to begin work at Carlson by the Bishop from the United Methodist Annual Conference. “My family is used to moving around a lot, and we don’t hesitate when the Lord calls us elsewhere; we go where we are sent,” Holden said. The Holdens have arrived at Carlson overowing with musical talent. James has mastered the harmonica, saxophone, drums, guitar, trumpet, violin, cello, and piano. He spent some years performing in an orchestra and exhibits impressive vocals. Christy holds a Bachelors in Music from Stetson University and is a classically trained opera singer. After lling in on the keyboard his inaugural Sunday, Pastor Holden says, “I hope to continue to be a part of the Praise Team at Carlson. Music moves me, restores me, and connects me to the Divine in the best way.” Christy also received a Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. She used to be the Senior Pastor of Hope United Methodist. Since July of 2012, she has been the Wesley Foundation Campus Pastor at Florida Gulf Coast University. The Holdens have a vast missions history including trips to Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, The Dominican Republic and China. “I hope to take a team from Carlson to Costa Rica in May of 2014. I know of an orphanage down there that could really use some help. “It’s entirely possible with the members of this church: Jim Martinson, Director of Missions, and his wife speak Spanish. As does our secretary, Claire O’Donnell,” Holden said. Other goals that Holden has for the congregation of Carlson include “becoming a light and to build relationships with the community,” pouring a lot into the contemporary worship service, nding a Youth Pastor that brings energy and connects with the youth, and creating a lively and safe place for families to grow. With an extemporaneous preaching style, a cornucopia of musical knowledge, and a heart for missions and young adult ministry, it looks like the Holden family will have no trouble igniting Carlson, and the community, with “The Divine.” New pastor energizes Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church OPEN FOR LUNCHAt 11 a.m.10% Discount OFF Lunch or Dinner with this ad863-342-8216 870 W.
