There are three extra special days of the y ear that are very important to those who regularly attend church. They are Easter, Christmas and Mother’s Day. More than likely you are aware that this coming Sunday is Mother’s Day. Are you ready? There are two key reasons why Mothers Day is so special. First, for most of us, our emotions are touched as we recall the memories of our mom. W hile a person may know many people and have multiple networks that include dozens of individuals, no one has impacted his or her life like good ‘ol Mom. Perhaps this “interpersonal touch” that only a mom can give is why during football season w hen players know they are on camera as they are along the sidelines, these mammoth specimens of men (many of whom tip the scales at upwards of 300 pounds) look into the lens, smile, wink, wave and say, “Hi Mom.” A second reason why Mother’s Day is so special is because it usually evokes laughter. W hile a young girl or teenager may chuckle at some of her mom “motherly ways” it is amazing how she will implement most of those same patterns when she herself becomes a mother. For example, recently I read an article entitled, “You’ve Turned Into a Mom When...” and then it lists several idiosyncrasies such as, You automatically double-knot everything you tie. You nd yourself humming the Barney song as you do the dishes. You actually start to like the smell of strained carrots mixed with applesauce. You spend a half hour searching for your sunglasses only to have your teenager say, “Mom, why don’t you wear the ones you pushed up on your head?” You are out for a nice romantic meal with your husband, enjoying some real adult conversation, when suddenly you realize that you’ve reached over and started to cut up his steak for him! How we love those dear people we call, “Mom.” Children do their best to communicate their love for their mother. It is their honest sincerity that often melts our hearts. Here are some examples of things kids have written to their moms on for her special day. Angie, 8 years old, wrote: “Dear Mother, I’m going to make dinner for you on Mother’s Day. It’s going to be a surprise. P.S. I hope you like pizza and popcorn.” Robert signed his card, “I got you a turtle for Mother’s Day. I hope you like the turtle better than the snake I got you last year.” Eileen said: “Dear Mother, I wish Mother’s Day wasn’t always on Sunday. It would be better if it were on Monday so we wouldn’t have to go to school.” Little Diane expressed her love by saying, “Mom, I hope you like the owers I got you for Mother’s Day. I picked them myself when Mr. Smith wasn’t looking.” And then there’s this one from Carol: “Dear Mother, here are two aspirins. Have a happy Mother’s Day!” No matter how you look at it, the impact of our mom is a life-long contribution. Inventor Thomas Edison, who no doubt is the most well-known person to have ever lived in this region, once said, “I did not have my mother long, but she cast over me an in uence which has lasted all my life. The good effects of her early training I can never lose. If it had not been for her appreciation and her faith in me at a critical time in my experience, I should never likely have become an inventor. I was always a careless boy, and with a mother of different mental caliber, I should have turned out badly. But her rmness, her sweetness, her goodness, were potent powers to keep me in the right path. My mother was the making of me. The memory of her will always be a blessing to me.” Call your next case. So, what are you planning to do for your mom this Mother’s Day? And don’t forget about the mother of your children, or that special someone God has put in your life who is like a mother to you. The Bible states multiple times to Honor your Father and your Mother (Exodus 20:5, Deuteronomy 5:16, Matthew 15:4, Matthe w 19:19, Mark 7:10; 10:19, Luke 18:20 and Ephesians 6:2.) If the Lord had only said it once, that would be suf cient, right? However, the command is repeated eight times in Scripture! I sort of have the feeling that God is serious about honoring, don’t you? Be encouraged to attend the church o f your choice this Sunday and celebrate your mom. God would be well-pleased, and more than likely, your mom would be, as well. And, while you’re at it, get some owers for her. Or, if she is no longer with us, give some owers to someone in her honor. Just make sure Mr. Smith isn’t looking i f you get them from his garden! (smile) Happy Mothers Day.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church on Highway 80 in LaBelle, locate d across the street from City Hall. 4 Caloosa Belle May 9, 2013 To Reach UsMailing Address: P.O. Your head feels like it’s going to explode. It’s Cold and Flu season again. You think “I have a sinus infection” and so you search through your old medicines to nd some ‘left-over’ antibiotics from the last time you felt sick and you take them in hopes of feeling better. You don’t know if the left-over medication will help or not, but you feel the need to try something. You are not alone in your thinking; it’s a common mistake people make and it’s now causing problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been informing us for years about ‘Antibiotic Resistant Bugs’. Healthcare providers have advised taking prescribed antibiotics “until they are gone” which may have been ten to fourteen days. Unfortunately, many people did not follow the instructions and stopped taking the antibiotics once they started to feel better. The patient then saved the remaining antibiotics, thinking that if they felt sick sometime in the future, they could take the balance of the antibiotic. Taking antibiotics when your body doesn’t need them, can cause germs/bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotic treatment, making them increasingly harder to treat. Many people need to be reminded that antibiotics will only help to ght ‘germs / bacteria’ but antibiotics will not ght against ‘viruses’. Colds, u, most sore throats, and bronchitis are caused by viruses. Antibiotics do not help ght viruses and taking antibiotics when you have a virus may do more harm than good. People sometimes try to demand that healthcare providers prescribe antibiotics, but antibiotics are not the “cure all”. Let your healthcare provider decide i f you really need antibiotics. According to the CDC, antibiotics and similar drugs have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients who have had infectious diseases. Since the 1940s, these drugs have greatly reduced illness and death from infectious diseases. Antibiotic use has been bene cial when prescribed and taken correctly. However, these drugs have been used so widely and for so long that the infectious organisms the antibiotics are designed to kill have adapted to them, making the drugs less effective. People infected with antimicrobialresistant organisms are more likely to have longer, more expensive hospital stays, and may be more likely to die as a result of the infection. There are many stories in the news lately about ‘Super Bugs’. The people that get these ‘super bugs’ are getting sicker, and staying sicker longer. For more information, you can log onto the CDC website www.cdc.gov/getsmart / antibiotic-use/know-and-do.html The CDC website has very good information about the Super Bug, Antibiotic Resistance and easy steps you can take to sta y safe. Many of the articles are also available in Spanish. Antibiotic misuse causing concerns in medical circles Mother’s Day is one of the great days of the year Patricia Dobbins Les Morgan

The Robert V. & Benjamin G. Miller Fund and Goodwill have partnered for two sessions in 2013. The Robert V. & Benjamin G. Miller Fund has announced an expansion of the Trailw ays Camp program that was launched in October of 2012 to address the social isolation experienced by adults with special needs and their caregivers in Southwest Florida. The Fund has again selected Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida, Inc. as its partner for operating the 2013 camps. The rst camp session will be May 6-9, 2013 and the second session will be October 7-11, 2013 at the Riverside Retreat Center in LaBelle. The camp minimizes costs by relying on the gracious assistance of volunteers in addition to an experienced staff. Over 30,000 adults with disabilities live in Southwest Florida. These adults, many of whom live with aging family members or caregivers, have few social or recreational opportunities that provide relief or respite for their caregivers. Trailways Camp removes barriers to social isolation by giving participants a chance to experience quality social recreational activities in a safe environment while giving respite to the families and caregivers. Last year's camp session was able to accommodate 20 campers a number The Robert V. & Benjamin G. Miller Fund hopes to grow. Charitable donations to the Fund are invited to increase the number of available spots at the camp. If you would like to have more information regarding the Trailways camp, camper application, or volunteer opportunities please contact Todd Ryan, Goodwill's Director of Career Development Services (239)995-2106 ext. 2285. He parted with it in the hope it will provide a little deeper understanding of the human tragedy perpetrated by the Nazi regime in the 1930s and ‘40s. The artifact is a piece of a wooden plank that served as part of his former patient’s bed in Auschwitz. She took the plank with her when she was liberated and on it she had painted a colorful picture of a Jewish spiritual leader holding a ram’s horn. His bat at his shoulder, Austin stands poised for the next step in his life the step into college and closer to his dream of pro baseball. Austin knows what works for him. His parents showed him the way, “For me to be truthful to myself and not settle for less than I want,” he said. Combine that with hard w ork, and it’s pretty clear that Austin can’t miss. In the LHS library May 6 where Austin’s next step was celebrated with family, friends, schoolmates, coaches and teammates, Principal Lucinda Kelley said Austin is a great example of an LHS student, a positive in uence on campus who worked hard, w as dedicated and always showed a “Yes, sir” attitude. She added that he should be a good t w ith Bethune-Cookman and hailed his excellence both in the classroom and on the ball diamond. Austin holds the 2011 LHS record for most homeruns in a season eight as well as the single season batting Average Record .554 and 2013 Career Homerun Record of 22. Several former coaches spoke up for their former player. Coach Jeff Burton coached Austin in Little League saying, he is a “primary example of what hard work will do” and noted that the family always worked together. Several described Austin’s ability to “explode like a cobra” at bat. Coach Ron Dunbar told the story of a 2012 homerun at Riverdale a monster hit that shot across the ball diamond and across the softball eld never to be found. Fellow Cowboy Derek Bass, who just signed to go to Berry College, and Austin have known each other since they were little, played together in Little League all the way through the majors. “It’s an honor to watch you excel in whatever you do,” Derek told his friend. “I’m looking forward to watching what you do in the future . We’re cool, right?” Jose Garcia, Austin’s dad, noted his son’s accomplishments. His mother said Austin’s Uncle Manuel Diaz is his #1 fan, who helped him as a boy learning the game. As he heads off to college, Mr. Garcia said his son has found his goal but it’s just the beginning of a bigger and brighter future. Determination and hard work, added to his natural abilities and passion, are the same talents that will help in his physical therapy studies at Bethune-Cookman. Austin said he’s been compared to the Anaheim Angels’ Albert Pujols because of his batting stance and approach to batter’s box. Austin himself said he’d one day love to wear a New York Yankee uniform but, if that doesn’t happen, he still wants to stay close to professional athletics as a physical trainer for a team or in a doctor’s of ce. Austin believes that if you work hard you will end up successful. If that is true, Austin continues to blaze a path for himself straight to the winner’s circle. The Urban Initiative Florida State Jamboree was held at the Larry Sanders Sports Complex in Tampa from May 2-5 and the LaBelle Little League Cardinals traveled to Tampa to play in the Jamboree which has been held each year since 2010. The program’s main goal is to bring the bene ts of Little League Baseball and Softball to youth in urban neighborhoods and affords them the opportunity to play in a tournament setting. They played against 12 other teams in the Major Division (9-12-year-olds) Baseball. At every jamboree event the participating teams have a fun weekend of games, instruction and other special events all at no cost to their local Little League. The Jamboree Awards Presentation was held on Saturday, May 4, at 1 p.m. with special guest Tony the Tiger. Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes is the Of cial Breakfast Food of Little League, and a proud sponsor of the Little League Urban Initiative. This year it is the LaBelle Little League Cardinals who bring the banner home to LaBelle and District 18. In their nal game the boys poured on the heat as they were determined to bring home a well deserved win. The action was nerve wracking as the teams went back and fourth taking the lead until the very end. The tough Belmont Heights Padres were playing hard and the Cardinals were not letting up as they took the lead in the sixth inning with a two run double by Jaxon Purvis bringing in Tyler Nesbitt and Tyler Vahle. Vahle’s bat was hot as he went 2-3 scoring two runs with a double in the second inning and a single in the sixth. Tyler Burton handled the Padres’ lineup as he racked up 12 strike-outs. He allowed only one earned run and two walks. Leading up to the championship game the Cardinals took the eld and dominated their opponents. Their rst game was against the Rays and they won with ease 8-0. Their second game was another blowout as they won 13-1 against the Reds. Their third game was more of the same as they easily won 15-2 against the Rockies putting them into the Semi Finals. The semi nal game put Zac Price on the pitchers mound where he held the Mets, a Tampa, team to 0-3 by pitching a no hitter giving the Mets 13 strikeouts. Leagues participating in this annual event were from Belmont Heights Little League— Tampa, Yellow Jackets Little League—Tampa, North Seminole Little League—Tampa, North Miami Little League—Miami, Progress Village Little League—Tampa, West Tampa Little League—Tampa, LaBelle Little League—LaBelle and Northwest Little League—Tampa. Submitted photoSurprise of a lifetimeLaBelle's Sgt. Stephen E. McIntyre in the United States Marine Corps, currently home on leave from Iwakuni, Japan, wanted to surprise his girlfriend Erma Sturgeon by giving her an engagement ring at work. The staff at Eden Park Elementary School in Immokalee went out of their way to make this a very special event, hiding Stephen in a back room as they waited for Miss Sturgeon to come into the of ce. The surprise on Erma's face was priceless as well as the uproar from the staff and ow of tears all around. Stephen lived in LaBelle through the 11th grade. His senior year he went to live with his father and graduated from Port Charlotte High School in 2008. He enlisted in the Marine Corps July 14, 2008, and was stationed in San Diego, California. He is currently stationed in Japan and is awaiting dates to be deployed to Afghanistan. Erma is a rst year third grade teacher at Eden Park Elementary in Immokalee. She graduated from Immokalee High School in 2007 and obtained an Associates in Science in Business Management and Marketing from Southwest Florida College. During her education continuation she worked as a substitute teacher for Collier County Public schools where she discovered her passion for teaching and pursued a degree in education. In 2012 she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education from Florida Gulf Coast University.
