Special needs shelters are truly identi ed as facilities of last refuge for those persons in the community with health and medical conditions. The Hendry County Special Needs Shelter located at West Glades School, in Muse, is de ned as a structure that has auxiliary power and is capable of providing a safer refuge for individuals, and their caregivers, who require health oversight. Considering that the county's medical resources are limited, it is strongly suggested that you pursue primary evacuation plans with family, friends, neighbors, church organizations, etc. Speak with y our physician and family about y our transportation and sheltering needs. If you require hospitalization, have your physician execute the necessary pre-admission procedures well in advance of a known, pending disaster such as a hurricane. Again, talk to your family, by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle Folks pay a total of nine cents in county taxes per gallon of gas at Hendry County gas stations including a six cent fuel tax, two cents of a possible ve-cent fuel tax, and a one-cent fuel tax. Eight cents of that total came up for renewal at Tuesday night's regular commission meeting and the board voted to continue them. An interlocal agreement governs the dispersal of the six cent fuel tax among the county and the Cities of LaBelle and Clewiston. That agreement was approved early (a public hearing on the dispersal is required every two years). The six cent tax itself is in place through December 31, 2020. Both cities indicated they approved the current dispersal agreement: Hendry County 65 percent; Clewiston 20.67 percent; LaBelle 14.33 percent. The board also approved extension of the two-cent tax, which was due to expire at the end of this year.In other business:Funding for indigent legal aid through Florida Rural Legal Services was continued. That gure is 25 percent of the $65 court cost imposed by county ordinance on those convicted of a crime. That amount is also divided among: court system innovations, public law libraries; teen court and other juvenile programs. The commissioners took no action on the West Recreation Board assessment on LaBelle area businesses proposed by the City of LaBelle to fund a golf course. Currently, only residential properties are being assessed for this use. Gas tax renewed The Florida Department of Health in Hendry County recognizes the value in measuring health outcomes and would like to express appreciation to the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for the fourth annual County Health Rankings & Roadmaps tool released recently. This study uses traditional and established data, much of which was obtained from the Department of Health and is available at www. oridacharts.com. The report highlights that health is a combined work in progress across a variety of community partners. The Florida Department of Health (DOH), through its county health departments, works together to improve the health of all Floridians. "The Florida Department of Health works every day to bring together community partners around shared goals to improve health," said Dr. John Armstrong, Surgeon General and Secretary of Health. "As we track our progress, we are reminded there is no nish line in our efforts for better health." The Rankings include a "snapshot" of each county in Florida with a color-coded map comparing each county's overall health ranking. There are also new county-level trend graphs detailing change over time for several of the measurements including children living in poverty, unemployment, and quality of care. Partnerships have health bene ts Submitted photo/ Mary RisleyHeading into a brave future2013 Relay for Life Event Chairman Kristi Hall said LaBelle Relay elded ten teams, with two off- eld. Mother Nature was in a contrary mood that night and forced the event to shut down at 8:30 p.m., before the special Luminaria. At that time, all the lights go out in the stadium, and the word HOPE, formed by lighted candles, is the focus of the crowd, symbolizing the heart of Relay. In spite of the early closure caused by inclement weather, this year's Relay for Life garnered over $43,000 for the cause. There will be a wrap up event in about a month where organizers will put in a luminaria ceremony as well as catch up on some of the games they missed. LaBelle Relay for Life is already looking for committee members for next year. If you're interested you can contact Kristi Hall at jimbyy@aol.com. Radiology Regional Center.. Community Briefs “I am pushing sixty. That is enough exercise for me.” Mark Twain It’s a debate with all the makings of an old Bud Light commercial. But forget “Tastes great!” “Less lling!” Instead it’s: “Physical exercise!” “Mental exercise!” In the battle to build better brain strength and beat back future memory loss, some studies laud mental excursion to make mental muscle while others show that cross training—rather than crossword puzzling—just may be your best option. Researchers at the University of Illinois recently studied the brains of 120 seniors. The ones who exercised their bodies—not necessarily their minds—showed signs of their brain volume increasing. MRI scans conducted one year after the study began recorded brain growth. Follow-up testing showed better recall and memory function among the seniors with the increased brain volume. Further, the lead neuroscientist on the study, Art Kramer, told NPR that evidence on the value of mental exercise isn’t so conclusive. Meanwhile, a recent Canadian Medical Association Journal study on preventing cognitive decline found that physical exercise—particularly resistance and balance training—didn’t show signs of signi cant cognitive improvement in its subjects. Mental exercise, however, did. “Mental activity is really important to keep your brain functioning at a high level for as long as possible,” Dr. Larry Chambers, scienti c advisor of the Alzheimer Society of Canada, told Global News. (The Canadian report gave zero credence to supplements and treatments that tout an ability to bene t brain function, including ginkgo, vitamin B6 and omega3s.) On the other hand, the Journal on Aging Research delved deeper in exploring how physical exercise bene ts brain function. Like their Canadian counterparts, these researchers agreed that not just any form of physical exercise was suf cient. A study of women, aged 70-80 and suffering with memory problems and muddled thinking, involved three types of physical exercise— weight lifting, stretching and toning, and walking. The Journal on Aging Research, reports the New York Times, measured two memory functions—verbal, an ability to memorize words; and spatial, an ability to remember where things are placed. Both the weightlifters and the walkers did well on verbal and spatial memory. The stretchers (sorry, yoga enthusiasts), actually showed poorer cognitive performance than from when they began the study. The aerobic pace proved key because such activity contributes to better blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and a healthier weight. If this sounds like the advice of your heart doctor, that’s no accident. “What’s good for the heart is good for the brain,” Rachel Whitmer, a researcher at Kaier Permanente in Northern California, told NPR. Researchers agree that friends gathering together to socialize is among the best ways to bene t the brain. They suggest stimulating conversation—perhaps about a good book. Presumably they prefer you leave the physical-exercise vs. mental-exercise debate, however stimulating it may be, to the experts. Saturday, April 13, was a big day for The Talkin’ Monkeys Project. The Talkin’ Monkeys Project hosted the Science and Environmental Club of Edison College for a day of learning and eco-friendly gardening. The group of students, accompanied by Dr. Henry Hermann, Professor of Biology, arrived w ith enthusiasm and packed lunches They had planned to spend the day! After introductions, we had a discussion period, review of the orientation package and an extended question and answer session. We then made a tour of the sanctuary and all had an opportunity to see the eco friendly lifestyle we espouse, as the primates w ere introduced. Lunch was a peaceful period of re ection and some more questions. Then it was time for work. The plants were unloaded from the car by one group. Another group went to the barn area to ll the wheelbarrow with seasoned compost of manure, ashes, composted vegetables, etc., and the last group began to dig. Figs are a natural diet feature for our resident primates. So, with this in mind, donated lillies from Publix and g trees from Ace Hardware were strategically placed in an area of full sun and along an established drip line system. All plants here at the sanctuary are supported by drip line and soaker hose systems. This includes all 115 varieties of bamboo, over four hundred plants and many vines. It was a hot day, 96 degrees! Yet, at the end of the day all of us were satis ed with the day’s work. We look forward to seeing all of these volunteers again in the future to help us with other eco-friendly projects! The Talkin’ Monkeys Project is an educational facility hosting students and volunteers from all over the world, but local students from our own campus of Edison College here in Hendry County are always signi cantly gratifying. Even more exciting news is the discussion we had to create behavioral studies. which will be integrated into the existing programs of the college. Education is the pivotal role of this primate sanctuary and to see it expanding into the local community, the local colleges and universities is exciting for all of us here in Hendry County.
