Please join them at LaBelle High School to by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle With over two years of work by the county and AIA on the deal to privatize Airglades Airport, the commissioners opened the way for the plan to continue. At their April 9 meeting in Clewiston, the county commissioners unanimously approved the much-discussed agreement with Airglades International Airport LLC (AIA). AIA (United States Sugar Corporation, Hilliard Brothers and Florida Cargo Fresh) has already put up some $3 million just to get the project rolling, with more to come, AIA's Malcolm "Bubba" Wade told the board that, if approved, Airglades will be the rst real airport privatization the FAA will have completed and a success for the county. He added that the agreement before them was only to approve the deal in concept at this time. He said the project is huge and complicated. AIA must rst submit to a 23-step process, which then has to be approved by the FAA, which also wants the management and purchase agreements to be separate. Even with a yes vote, the project will still take a couple years to complete, he said. Mr. Wade admitted that environmental clean up could be a major drawback, should it become necessary. He explained that environmental testing is normally done late in the process because, if clean up is required, the clock starts ticking at closing and clean up would almost immediately have to begin. That said, he feels the risk is "minimal" since aerial photographs show only some fuel clean up should be required. Aviation gas is easily taken care of, he explained. Commission Chairman Karson Turner noted that one potential commercial jet company interested in Airglades and the 180 jobs it offered went to Dothan, Alabama, instead because an agreement could not be made. So bring your families and friends out for a great evening of fun and show your support for this most worthwhile cause. "We're really looking forward to it!," said Event Chairman Kristi Hall. "We hope to see you there!" Chairman Turner regretted that outcome but noted, "There are other commercial jets looking for a home." He added that the government should not be a catalyst for jobs, but Hendry County is in just that position. Airglades is just the type of project the county needs for jobs and economic growth, he pointed out. He also admitted that the county faces some risk on the environmental issue, but feels it is justi ed and worth that risk. "There is no perfect deal out there," he concluded. In the end the motion to approve the agreement was made by Commissioner J anet Taylor and passed unanimously to applause by the audience. The commission's decision was welcomed by Hendry County Economic Development Director Greg Gillman, who hailed it as a "historic moment." He said this project is of a magnitude unlike anything Hendry County has seen before and it may never come again. It took a lot of dedication and focus to get to this point, adding that it is one of the most complicated projects he's ever worked on in his 25 years in economic development. This vote just enables the project to continue. Airglades will need another anchor. Many questions need to be answered. "There's a lot of work to do," he said. Have you have ever had a conversation w here you thought something was being said, only to nd out later that, indeed, that w as a misunderstanding on your part? Or, have y ou ever assumed something was being communicated to you by another and you discovered later that what you assumed w as never their intention to tell you? Sometimes those "later discoveries" can be a relief, and other times frustrating. However, no matter how it turns out misunderstandings, or incorrect interpretations can be costly. Misconceptions of God can also be costly because they can be very defeating. For example, I have been teaching Bible studies since I was 19 years old. Over those thirty- ve plus years I have heard some real "doozies" of what people believed was written in the Bible "somewhere" though they didn't know where it was recorded. A classic misconception is that many people think "cleanliness is next to godliness" comes from the pages of Scripture. If this is indeed a word from God, then homemakers have every right to feel guilty that their houses are not always tidy. In fact, depending on how far you carry it, people soon become more concerned about their furniture than they do their family. Here's another one people often assume is part of the Word of God: "God helps those who help themselves." I've seen this used as a basis for many people thinking they can work their way to heaven. They, therefore, miss the biblical teaching that eternal life is free (Romans 6:23). There are other misconceptions of God's Word that sometimes can be believed sincerely, yet are simple absent from the Holy Book. Anyone would be wise to review and do a personal study from the Scriptures to assess if what they believe is genuinely accurate according to Scripture. It is, after all, most unfortunate how one's belief can, in some way, adversely affect their life and fasten them to bondage. Another example of a misconception is one I have heard said about a speci c time when a person was converted. It goes like this: "If you don't know the date you were saved, then you are not saved." Really? Regretfully, evangelists have been the worst at propagating this misconception. The fact is, there is a split second when a person goes from darkness into light. After recognizing you're a sinner and that Christ died for you and rose again, you place your trust in Him alone as your only way to heaven. However, not knowing when that particular split second was doesn't mean you aren't saved. When Scripture gives assurance of salvation, it doesn't go back to a date or a moment; it goes back to a fact. Who are you trusting right now? If you're trusting Christ alone as your only way to heaven, you are saved, regardless of when you crossed the line. After all, John 3:16 does not say, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, and whoever believes in Him and knows the date should not perish but have everlasting life." Correct? This idea is critical, because if a person buys into this misconception, it's a tremendous hindrance to their outreach for Christ. How can I talk to someone else about their salvation if I'm not entirely certain of my own? True, some people come to Christ from a very sudden and dramatic experience, like the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-39; he could have easily given you the date. And there's no doubt the same thing was true of Paul the Apostle in Acts 9:1-22, 26-28; I'm sure he not only could have given the date, but he could have testi ed of the speci c hour he trusted the Savior. But there are those whose conversion is not as dramatic. They may have been raised in a Christian environment, where Christ was spoken about frequently. Certainly at some point in time, they came to clearly understand their sinful condition and trust Christ, but they may not know exactly when the moment occurred. Misconceptions can be damaging and defeating, as well as a particular hindrance in our outreach to others. The result is a confusion of the message, the questioning of our own salvation, and even a lack o f con dence in God's Word when speaking to others about the Lord. The bottom line: know what the Bible says and where it says it. That can only come from your personal study and exploration o f the sacred page. Let's get after that, shall we?Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located on Highway 80 across the street from City Hall. Thank You by Pat DobbinsThe month of April is recognized as Autism Awareness Month. It is special opportunity for communities to raise awareness and educate the public about autism. There is no known single cause for autism, but many researchers believe that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. No "one" gene has been identi ed as causing autism, however researchers have been searching for irregular segments of genetic codes that children with autism may have inherited. Some of the characteristic behaviors of autism may or may not be clearly noticeable during the child's rst 18 to 24 months, but they usually become more obvious during early childhood from ages 24 months to 6 years. As part of a "well-baby" or "well-child" visit, the child's health care provider should complete a "developmental screening," and they may ask speci c questions about the child's progress. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) these ve behaviors may give signals that further evaluation is warranted: If the child does not babble or coo by 12 months of age If the child does not make gestures by 12 months of age (point, wave, grasp) If the child does not say single words by 16 months of age If the child does not say two-word phrases on their own by 24 months of age If the child has any loss of any language or social skill at any age Having any of these ve "red ags" does not mean that your child has autism, but because the characteristics of the disorder can vary so much, a child showing these behaviors should have further evaluations completed by a healthcare specialist. This may include referrals to a neurologist, psychologist, developmental pediatrician, speech or language therapist, or other professionals knowledgeable about autism. Always talk with your healthcare provider if you are concerned about your child's development. Finding out that your child has autism can be overwhelming. Parents always have lots of questions about what they can do to help their child. With the appropriate services, support, training, and information, children with autism can grow, learn and ourish, even if they have a different developmental rate than others. There is no known cure for autism however there are treatment and education approaches that may reduce some of the challenges associated with the condition. There are ways to help lessen disruptive behaviors and education that can teach "self-help" skills which allow for greater independence. Take time to get educated about autism. Additional information about autism is available at: http://www.cdc.gov/actearly or http://www.cdc.gov/autism. April is Autism Awareness Month Patricia Dobbins Les Morgan-

Church Briefs Littered cigarette butts are more than just an eye sore. According to environmental clean-up reports, cigarette butts are the No. 1 littered item on U.S. roadways and the No. 1 item found on beaches and waterways worldwide. A new survey conducted by Legacy, shows that while more than 88 percent of Americans surveyed think that cigarette butts are an environmental concern, more than 44 percent of those polled who had ever smoked admit to having dropped a cigarette on the ground and nearly 32 percent have dropped a cigarette out of a car window. Toxic tobacco trash includes a plastic lter which biodegrades only under extreme conditions, putting wildlife in danger and wreaking costly havoc on U.S. waterways, parks, beaches and roadways. Additionally, cigarette butts contain carcinogens that can leach into soil, and chemicals that are poisonous to wildlife, threatening to contaminate water sources. This month in advance of Earth Day, Legacy has partnered with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics (Leave No Trace) to raise awareness and mobilize action surrounding this toxic problem with a new set of television and radio Public Service Announcements (PSAs) available in English and Spanish, urging the public to ‘Rethink Butts’ and take a new perspective on this environmental issue. Over the prior 30 days, Americans surveyed reported seeing this form of toxic litter on sidewalks (80.1 percent), in parks (32.1 percent), on playgrounds (16.6 percent) and on beaches (15.7 percent). While more than 93 percent of those surveyed agree that dropping a cigarette butt on the ground is a form of littering, it is alarming that so many smokers still litter them. “Social norms surrounding litter have shifted dramatically over the last several decades,” said Dr. Cheryl Healton, DrPH, President and CEO of Legacy, a public health non-pro t based in Washington, D.C. “But despite the fact that so many Americans are hyper-concerned about the environment and are eager to recycle household items and pick up litter, there remains a total disconnect when it comes to icking cigarette butts onto our streets and into our waterways. Through our new partnership with Leave No Trace we hope to not only begin to change the behavior of littering cigarette butts, but also highlight the fact that billions of cigarettes butts annually amount to an enormous environmental and public health threat that our communities are left to pay for.” “Cigarette butts have a serious impact in the outdoors we create and our children explore,” according to Dana Watts, Executive Director of the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. “Through this important partnership with Legacy, we hope to provide tangible and relevant public education about the issue, fostering healthier people, lands and waterways.” In an increasingly health and environmentally conscious world, cigarette butts remain one of the only socially acceptable forms of littering left. This new set of bilingual PSAs is available online for download and distribution. Join more than a billion people in 180 countries around the world this Earth Day, and commit to promoting environmental action this year, by stopping toxic litter and starting the discussion about this global problem. Download the PSAs and read more at RethinkButts.org. Cigarette butts are toxic waste In an increasingly health and environmentally conscious world, cigarette butts remain one of the only socially acceptable forms of littering left.

On March 15, 2013, The Salvation Army in LaBelle recognized local volunteers with an annual Volunteer Appreciation. Volunteers were welcomed by The Salvation A rmy staff, members of the Advisory Board for Lee, Hendry, and Glades, as well as Area Commander, Major Tom Louden. The evening began with a meal provided by Save a Lot of LaBelle. Over 25 door prizes were raf ed off over the course of the evening thanks to many local donors including: Little Caesars Pizza, Don's Steakhouse, Forrey Grill, Hungry Howie's, All Nails, Top Draw, San Julian Restaurant, Bridge Street Coffee & Tea, McDonald's and many others. A big thank you to our donors who helped make the evening special! Certi cates were awarded to local churches, civic groups, and other organizations for their support during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Y ear-round Volunteers were recognized for their tireless efforts and support in helping w ith daily activities including helping in the food pantry and of ce duties to support a staff of three in LaBelle. The nal award presented for the evening was for the Hendry County Volunteer of the Year. The following was read prior to the presentation of the award: "The 2012 Volunteer of the Year for Hendry County has been a faithful supporter of The Salvation Army for many years. He has been active in year round activities and helped with seasonal projects such as the Christmas Kettle Drive. This young man has been described by The Salvation Army staff as devoted, faithful, driven, and always available to help. The staff in Hendry County has also said things like, "He is always around and if there is something going on that he is unaware of, he wants to know how he can help, before he knows what the project is". During our most recent Kettle Drive he donated over 30 hours a week of his time, for a duration of six weeks by setting up and taking down kettles each day. He did this at three locations in LaBelle. In the meantime, he still had time to bell ring several hours a week. He has been faithful at picking up bread from our local Winn Dixie store to distribute daily and has done so for many years. He is active in other areas of the community, helping with projects through Kiwanis and the annual United Way Fundraiser for Hendry/Glades counties. He loves showing off his car and even enters it in Car Shows all over the area. If you haven't guessed by now, our 2012 Volunteer of the Year for Hendry County is Mr. Paul Kraft.
