Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantCaptain Hendry funThe annual Captain Hendry Dinner December 8 included a wild auction with auctioneer Karson Turner and his assistant Sheriff Steve Whidden. The food, entertainment, company and even the weather were perfect, but best of all was the infusion of funding for education. Thursday, December 13, 2012 50¢ Plus tax V ol. 89 No. 49 by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle At the nal Hendry County commission meeting of 2012 the board moved a little further down the road in its search for a new county administrator. Several months ago Judi Kennington-Korf resigned her position under strong criticism from the board. Since then the commissioners have been advertising for applicants. Tuesday night they voted to end the application period as of December 18. At that time, all the commissioners will whittle down their personal choices to a maximum of about 12. Those who make the rst cut will be contacted for Skype or video conferencing interviews. The list will be vetted January 8 and each commissioner will prepare interview questions. Those interviews will be set for January 24 and 25 or 25 and 26. The board is beginning to feel an urgency in lling the position, which is currently being covered by County Attorney Mark Lapp. As they determine their choices, the commissioners will be focusing on the values each may bring to the table such as knowledge, skills and ability. After the Legislative Delegation meeting earlier in the day, State Representative Matt Hudson appeared at the commission meeting. The board discussed continuing to provide of ce space for him and his Administrative Assistant Kim Hamilton, who also served with former Rep. Denise Grimsley. Newly chosen board Chairman Karson Turner told Rep. Hudson, "We need your presence in our county," acknowledging the value of having a legislative of ce in our government center who can reach out to this community. The representative will be charged $1 for the space and the county will continue to pay the phone bill for his of ce. BOCC to narrow search for county administrator A 30-year-old LaBelle resident w as airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition December 6 after a one-vehicle crash on Old CR 78 west of SR 29. According to the Florida Highw ay Patrol, a 2004 Ford F-150 driven by Antonio Moreno was traveling east on Old CR 78 when he lost control of the vehicle as he w as negotiating a right curve. The truck traveled across the westbound lane and entered the residential driveway located at 450 Old CR 78 with its left side. Mr. Moreno then reentered the road and traveled across the eastbound lane onto the south grass shoulder. It began to rotate clockwise traveling across the residential driveway at 383 Old CR 78, struck a tree with its left rear portion, rotated counter-clockwise and continued traveling in a southeasterly direction. The vehicle struck a chain link fence with its front portion and came to a nal rest in the parking lot of the Hendry County Boat Dock, 363 CR 78, facing southeast. Mr. Moreno was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. V ictim airlifted to hospital

Noah’s ArkAs I recall it, I was made aware of Noah and his Ark when I was about seven years old and in the third grade at St, Bridget’s school in my home town of Logansport, Indiana. Even though that is seventy seven years ago, I can still remember my fascination with the story and the countless reports of the world’s continuing efforts to authenticate the actuality of it’s happening. When I came across the following adaptation of the long standing versions of the original, I couldn’t help but pass it on in the expectation that we never get too old to learn. Noah’s Ark : Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah’s Ark ONE: Don’t miss the boat. TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat! THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark FOUR: Stay t. When you’re 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big FIVE: Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. SIX: Build your future on high ground. SEVEN: For safety’s sake, travel in pairs. EIGHT: Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. NINE: When you’re stressed, oat awhile. TEN: Remember, the Ark was built b y amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. (Noah has a friend in high places) ELEVEN: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there’s always a rainbo w waiting. Most people walk in and out of our lives. True friends leave footprints in our hearts. T. W. Community Briefs Dear LaBelle Residents,You may have heard the saying “It takes a village…” Someone who lives in a big city may never understand the true bene ts of small town America. We certainly do. Kelly and I grew up in similar small towns in a different part of the country. I remember telling my father when I was in high school that I couldn’t wait to leave “this small town”. Everyone knew my business. My father was the postmaster, he knew everyone and all the local gossip. Everyone knew him and our family. I didn’t like it. When Kelly and I got married and decided to raise a family, we looked for a town like the ones where we grew up. A town where we could have some close friends, where people looked out for one another. People that you could really count on. We found it in LaBelle. You never really realize how many friends you have until you need one. When the whole town rallies to help a friend when they are down it makes you feel special. I could have never imagined how much friendship and love surrounded our family in our time of need. We are so thankful to have found such a community as LaBelle. There are so many people to thank. The teachers, staff and students of Country Oaks Elementary school are awesome! You are truly lifesavers! Thank you for all the wonderful meals and for the chicken dinner bene t. Matt & Barb and the staff of Forrey Grill, you are the Best! A huge thank you to Lisa, Mary Jo and LaBelle Fire Department for hosting the spaghetti dinner. Our own Church and many of the other churches in LaBelle for your constant and steadfast prayers and well wishes. There are too many others to mention. Thanks again to everyone that has taken a part of supporting us during our time of need and helping us while we are on the road to recovery!! Sincerely, Kelly & Joe TimmChristmas in the ParkOn behalf of the Greater LaBelle Chamber of Commerce, I want to thank all of you folks who helped out with Christmas in the Park. The City of LaBelle was a great help with the lighting and decorating along with a lot of the chamber board members and friends. T & M Portable Restrooms are always there to help out. Thanks to DOT for putting the barrier around the “snow.” The pony rides were a big hit this year. Thanks to Steve White for getting us in the spirit with your music, and also to the high school clubs that helped out. If I have missed anybody, I apologize. My memory seems to be leaving me faster than I would like. Many thanks to our monetary givers that make the “snow” possible: Wesley Hansen, Phil Pelletier, Kiwanis, Hendry County Rec. Board, Higginbotham & Soud, and Rotary. We were a little shy on the amount we raised for the “snow.” We don’t want to miss giving the opportunity for you to help out with this endeavor. If you feel you would like to give to this worthy cause for our children in the greater LaBelle area, you can still make a donation to help cover our cost. Thank you. We feel it was a successful event and are already making plans for next year. Also, thank you to Santa, Ms. Santa, and the elf. Bryan Beer LaBelle Chamber of Commerce Thank You

by Pudge LehmanReceived my rst Christmas present last week...Bill Miller (Betty and Earl's son) said he wanted to thank me for being part of "the village" that helped raise him and many other kids in this town. What a compliment...Made me regret not doing more but lled my heart anyway...This was back in the 70s and 80s when people could tell the parents, after chastising the kids, what kind of mischief they were up to...and the parents thanked you. We need to get back to that time when parents loved their children enough to expect them to behave and respect others. O.K. Enough of the soapbox speeches.. We all know to drink more water in the summer when we sweat but did you realize that it's just as important in the winter? The air is drier and when we have to have the heater on it's worse. Just read a hint about taking a giant piece of bubble wrap to the ball games to make the bleachers softer...Then a picture of m y rather large rump sitting on the bubble wrap and the sound of 4th of July reworks entered my brain...people hitting the oor and hiding...and I decided it wouldn't work for me. For birthday cakes stick the candles in a marshmallow before putting on the cake... no melted wax all over the cake. Werds UV wisdum: Half the people you know are below average...OR....What is the speed of dark?....OR....Nobody can make you feel inferior, or stupid, without your permission.
