Rural/country doctors have long been portrayed as kindly, understanding people who put the welfare of patients before their own. They are known to comfort, take time to listen, make house calls at any time of the day or night and share the lifestyle of those they treat. Some even consider rural doctors to be a dying breed. But Dr. Udayashree Nune, a board-certi ed Family Practitioner at Hendry Regional Medical Center, is far from a dying breed; she plans to be a rural physician for many years to come. Dr. Nune arrived in Clewiston, a rural agricultural community that occupies only 4.57 square miles, in 2007. At that time, she began practicing family medicine at the Hendry Family Care Center (renamed in 2012 as the Forbes Family Care Center). Originally from South India, Dr. Nune speaks uent Arabic, English and the Indian dialect, Telugu. Her family history is very intriguing. As a little girl growing up very poor in South India, she grew tired of living on a dirt oor and told her mother she wanted to change their lifestyle. Giving serious thought to her daughter’s concerns, one day her mother told her that she should become a doctor. From that moment on, becoming a doctor was a dream she planned to ful ll. Dr. Nune’s journeys took her down long, dif cult roads. She sacri ced many lunches and dinners so she could use the money for transportation to and from Dr. Nune named Rural Physician of the Year Submitted photoPictured from left: Dyoll Turner, board member, Alice Blandford, nurse practitioner, Victor Blandford, Chairman of the Hospital Board of Authority, Dr. Nune, and Lynn Besley, CEO. Her countless nancial and personal challenges throughout the years have enabled Dr. Nune to maximize her resources and appreciate the little things that others tend to take for granted. Being born and raised in a rural area has given Dr. Nune a passion for practicing medicine in a rural community, where physicians often come and go like revolving doors.' When she rst arrived in Clewiston, she made a personal commitment to stay in this rural area, and she is keeping that promise. Dr. Nune has two adult sons. They are following in her footsteps by attending medical school. Her elder son is studying to be a Family Practitioner and, like his mother, plans to return to Clewiston and practice medicine at Hendry Regional Medical Center. Having dealt with the hardships of being poor, Dr. Nune is passionate about helping others in need. She cares for many patients w ho do not have the ability to pay. Most recently, she repaired the torn ear-lobe of an 11 year-old, whose family did not have insurance or nancial aid. A thank-you note from another patient lies in the corner of her of ce, and reads, "You are my Angel. Not having insurance makes seeing a doctor a real nancial burden, but you took that burden away. I want you to know how much y our generosity has touched me. You really are an Angel from God, and I pray that He w ill continue to bless you and your practice." Dr. Nune's list of good deeds is too long to mention she provides nancial support to a student in India and visits Nicaragua for a yearly week-long mission trip, where she provides free medical care. She volunteers during the annual community health fair. She still makes those "house-call's" for home-bound individuals, which most physicians consider as "long-gone." Caring not only for her patients' medical needs, but also for their emotional needs, has made Dr. Nune very popular within the community. Rural doctors like Dr. Nune deal w ith a wide range of personal and social problems that affect people, including issues related to famil y p roblems divorce and alcohol or drug abuse. Her compassionate and caring personality, along with her wonderful sense of humor, has netted Dr. Nune a long daily log of scheduled patients. At the Forbes Family Care Center, she wears a lot of hats and uses a wide range of skills to give her patients the best possible care. Dr. Nune enjoys working with senior citizens. She provides medical treatment for patients at the local nursing home and bonds easily with them. On weekends she can often be found sitting and reading with the residents who never have visitors. She likes to give them special treats free manicures and pedicures to "make their day." One evening she sat for hours and held the hand of a dying woman until her family could arrive. Dr. Nune's great love for senior citizens has inspired her with an ultimate goal to establish an End-of-Life Care Facility, where she can play a major role in supporting endof-life journeys. Her heart breaks and she's deeply saddened whenever she sees dying patients, with no family or friends to comfort them or say goodbye as they end their earthly travels. Hendry Regional Medical Center and the Forbes Family Care Center were proud to nominate Dr. Udayashree as the 2012 Rural Physician of the Year. The Grand Marshal is always someone who has been a special supporter of LaBelle and its residents, someone who may or may not work behind the scenes but always works sel essly for the community. The Pioneer Family should have deep roots in the LaBelle area with family members remaining here to help build a thriving community. The next SCF meeting will be Monday, Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. All are welcome. Only community and business representatives designated by their respective groups have voting rights. FELDA, Fla. (Nov. 12, 2012) – Hundreds of Monsanto Company employees at nearly 40 different locations across the U.S. – ranging from Hawaii to Massachusetts – will be involved in the company’s rst “Rural Hunger Volunteer Week.” The employees are volunteering in teams at their local food banks this November as part of Monsanto’s push to raise awareness about and combat hunger in rural America. By mobilizing employees across the country, Monsanto hopes to make a real impact while bringing the issue of rural hunger into people’s consciousness this holiday season. One such site volunteering their efforts is the Monsanto Vegetable Seeds Division in Felda. The team donates not only their resources, but also their time. “I think Monsanto’s Rural Hunger Volunteer Week is a really great cause,” said Lynette Tindall, the Felda site outreach lead. “You don’t always realize there are hunger issues occurring in y our own community of rural America, but there are.” Even before Monsanto decided to implement Rural Hunger Volunteer Week, the Felda site has already spent the past four Thanksgivings with United Way. “The most rewarding part is how appreciative the people are,” Tindall said. Along with preparing 15 food baskets, Tindall’s team will once again serve Thanksgiving dinner at United Way along with their families. Brenda Cockrell, Monsanto’s Global Volunteer Program Manager, is grateful for the opportunity to launch the program. “As counterintuitive as it may seem, there are millions of rural families who simply don’t know where their next meal will come from,” she said. “As a company with deep roots in rural America, we are committed to helping address this problem. That is what Rural Hunger Volunteer Week is all about.” Even though America’s farmers are among the most productive and ef cient in the world, hunger is a signi cant problem in America – and rural America is no exception. According to Feeding America, more than 15 percent of rural households are food insecure. That is around three million households in the very communities where much of the world’s supply is raised. Monsanto is a consistent supporter of America’s farmers and their communities. In addition to Rural Hunger Volunteer Week, the company is involved in several other key efforts to ght hunger in America. Recently, Monsanto pledged $3 million to Invest an Acre, a partnership which helps farmers support their local food banks. Other efforts include annual food drives at industry tradeshows, which have raised 80,000 pounds of food over three years, as well as donations to rural food banks amounting to $300,000 through the Monsanto Fund’s America’s Farmers Grow Communities program. Monsanto is continuing to develop tools for farmers that help them get the most from their land – but the company recognizes that production is only part of the solution. That is why the company is working to raise awareness about rural hunger in America. It is going to take collaboration and people willing to lend a helping hand to get food on the tables of those who need it most. More information about Monsanto’s commitment to end rural hunger can be found at www.monsanto.com/ ghtinghunger. About Monsanto Monsanto Company is a leading global provider of technology-based solutions and agricultural products that improve farm productivity and food quality. Career Focus on Tax Preparersby Matt KindermannTax season is almost here and many tax preparation companies are starting to look at their staf ng needs. In fact, you may see signs already alongside the road advertising for job openings from companies you only hear about during this time of the year. A tax preparer is not exactly a career in itself, but makes for a great temporary job for anyone with some nancial experience and a little math skill, no matter your age or background. Bilingual preparers are usually in high demand. Tax preparers are a temporary job by their very nature. Once W-2's go out in January, the tax agencies will slowly see increased customer traf c from early February to the peak in April as people wait to the last minute to le. A tax preparer should expect to work only a few hours a week at the beginning of the season, and be asked to work increasingly longer hours as the season draws to an end. Some things to consider before applying for these positions include the compensation package and the training costs. Most of these positions are paid an hourly rate plus commission, which can be about 2 or 3% of the customer's return. Some customers who will have to pay the IRS, will be charged anywhere from $100 on up, but only a fraction of this will go to the preparer. This pay system encourages the preparers to be as ef cient as possible to nd any available tax credit or deduction in order to get the greatest return, a win-win for customer and preparer. However, most tax preparation companies will require the preparer to pay for a short training class prior to being hired. These classes cost around $100, and are usually not reimbursed upon hire. The company is not obligated to hire you, even if you have paid for the training class, and other tax preparation agencies might not accept a competitors training certi cate because the software is proprietary. Before paying for a class, ask the agency how many preparers they intend to hire as a gage to your odds of being considered. Southwest Florida Works is the regional state workforce board for Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. Many years ago a story was told of a man who returned to a high school reunion. He had not been a good student and was regarded as the "class-clown" who probably would never amount to much. However, to the surprise of his classmates, it was obvious this gentleman was now very wealthy. When asked how he had done so well nancially, he commented, "I'll tell you how I did it I am not a greedy individual, that's how I've made my money." His friends asked him to explain. This entrepreneurial stated he had married a lovely girl whose father was a cattle rancher. Together, he and his wife started a steak restaurant, buying the steaks from her father for $1 and selling them for $4. He then said, with tongue in cheek, "And, I have been satis ed with that 3% ever since!" Have you ever met anyone who is greedy? We just nished with the Thanksgiving holidays. Most people in our setting pushed themselves away from the Thanksgiving table and waddled to the couch to op in front of the television. Within minutes of watching the ballgame, a serious competition with a saw cutting trees could be heard from the volume of snoring that begins. Waking up from a nap and before full-consciousness has come to them, people nd themselves heading back to the kitchen for a turkey sandwich and/or extra dessert. Tumbling into the bed at the end of the celebration folks awaken Friday morning to learn who was nearly rambled to death at the shopping center where the mid-night madness discounted items could be purchased. Before the afternoon sets in, it is not odd to nd people searching for paper and pencil so as to compose their "All I want for Christmas is" list. So have you ever met anyone who is greedy? If you have ever looked in the mirror you have seen someone who at least has the potential to be greedy. Hence, we all need to engage what perhaps could be called "greed guard". How does one activate "greed guard?" The only way I know is to change ones focus. Instead of being greedy, the shift has to be redirected towards being grateful. Here are some examples of thankfulness that I nd to be inspirational. I trust you do, too. "Would you know who is the greatest saint in the world: It is not he who prays most or fasts most, it is not he who gives most alms or is most eminent for temperance, chastity or justice; but it is he who is always thankful to God, who wills everything that God wills, who receives everything as an instance of God's goodness and has a heart always ready to praise God for it." ~ William Law "Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world." ~ John Milton "A thankful heart cannot be cynical." ~ A.W. Tozer "We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts. How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive from Him the little things?" ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer "A sensible thanksgiving for mercies received is a mighty prayer in the Spirit of God. It prevails with Him unspeakably." ~ John Bunyan "Gratitude as a discipline involves a conscious choice. I can choose to be grateful even when my emotions and feelings are still steeped in hurt and resentment. It is amazing how many occasions present themselves in which I can choose gratitude instead of a complaint. I can choose to be grateful when I am criticized, even when my heart still responds in bitterness. I can choose to spea k about goodness and beauty, even when m y inner eye still looks for someone to accuse or something to call ugly." ~ Henri Nouwen "If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satis ed if it were doubled." ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon "Receive every day as a resurrection from death, as a new enjoyment of life; meet every rising sun with such sentiments of God's goodness, as if you had seen it, and all things, new-created upon your account: and under the sense of so great a blessing, let your joyful heart praise and magnify so good and glorious a Creator." ~ William Law "I thank Thee rst because I was never robbed before; second, because although they took my purse they did not take my life; third, although they took my all, it was not much; and fourth, because it was I who was robbed and not I who robbed." ~ Matthe w Henry "When we were children we were grateful to those who lled our stockings at Christmas time. Why are we not grateful to God for lling our stockings with legs?" ~ G.K. Chesterton "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." ~ I Thessalonians 5: 1618 "Praise be to you, O LORD, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler o f all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name." ~ 1 Chronicles 29: 10-13Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located across the street from City Hall on Highway 80. Submitted photoLibrary helping Kiwanis projectThe Barron Library is helping the Kiwanis Club of LaBelle with collecting “gently used” or new books for children. The Barron Library has a nice display about the project and a box where community members can donate books. Books for elementary aged kids are in greatest demand, but books for all ages from preschool to middle school are accepted. Books will be collected from now until the end of December and a special event will be scheduled so that free books can be given out to the children in our community. Containers of Peanut Butter and Jelly are also being collected. The Peanut Butter and Jelly will help support our local food bank and will be distributed by United Way and Salvation Army. The Kiwanis Project concept is simple and the slogan is: “Feeding the Brain with Just 1 Book, Feeding the Belly with Peanut Butter and Jelly”. The Kiwanis Club of LaBelle is excited and very thankful that community partners are supportive of this project. Donation boxes are at the following locations: Barron Library, The Kiwanis Thrift Store in LaBelle, LaBelle Chamber of Commerce, Center State Bank and Florida Community Bank. For more information, please call the Kiwanis Thrift Store at 863-675-4043. Pictured with Head Librarian Karen Hildebrand, at left, is Vickie Parrish from Barron Library. 8 Caloosa Belle November 29, 2012 The United Way of Hendry & Glades 2012-2013 Campaign has of cially kicked off. The goal for this year's campaign is $215,000 that will help fund the network of 34 United Way agencies that help people in Hendry and Glades Counties. Mary Beth Carroll, chair of the United Way of Hendry and Glades 2012-2013 Campaign announced that early running companies have helped the organization get to the 53% mark. Carroll said, "We are very pleased to have reached the 53% of our goal at this point in the campaign. I want to thank the Pacesetter Companies and other early givers for stepping up to set a great example for our campaign." Pacesetter Companies include the following: Hilliard Brothers $40,000 Alico, Inc. $35,342 Johnson Prewitt $5,400 Lykes Brothers $2,644 The Andersons $2,000 Carroll went on to say, "Considering the huge need in our community, we must reach the $215,000 goal so that we can fully fund the entire network of 34 United Way agencies that help so many people in our community. We are reaching more of the individuals and families who are in great need through our partnership efforts, but to continue to serve those in need, we must reach the goal." Cliff Smith, President of the United Way commented, "This is a generous community, and I know we can do it. Every gift is important no matter what size, because added together they can make a real impact and change people's lives." United Way has recently expanded serv ices in Hendry and Glades counties by opening a United Way House in Clewiston in partnership with Goodwill. An additional United Wa y House in Moore Haven will be operational in the near future, and the United Way House in LaBelle recently moved into a much larger facility enabling even more agencies to help more people. United Way Houses provide free space for agencies so people needing services can access them near their own neighborhood. A local network of thirty-four agencies and programs will receive funds from the 2012-2013 United Way of Hendry & Glades fundraising campaign. These agencies include: The Salvation Army, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Children's Advocacy Center, Child Care of Southwest Florida, Healthy Families, Lighthouse and many others. This network serves a diverse range of needs: nurturing children and youth, strengthening families, meeting critical needs such as helping the elderly and disabled live independently, and empowering communities by bringing health and human services to neighborhoods. The network of United Way agencies helped over 21,000 people in Hendry and Glades Counties last year. In addition to housing the United Way 211 helpline program, many agency programs and services can be found at the LaBelle and Clewiston United Way Houses such as Southwest Florida Addiction Services, Children's Advocacy Center, Community Coordinated Care for Children (4 C's), Hendry-Glades Homeless Coalition, Catholic Charities and more. In addition to raising funds for human service organizations in our community, the United Way promotes partnerships and collaborations among agencies, helping them to work together focusing on issues and solutions that continue to improve lives. For more information or to volunteer, please call United Way of Hendry and Glades Counties at (800) 887-9234. United Way kick off campaign A museum is always a good place to begin an adventure, particularly when such an adventure is an opportunity to learn more about where you live. November 8th marked the beginning of the 2012-13 class of Youth Leadership Hendry Glades. They met for their Orientation Day in the Clewiston Museum which was opened early to accommodate all by the curator Butch Wilson. A breakfast sponsored and provided by McDonald's of Clewiston, (thank you Nesbitt Family!) started the day for the sophomore and juniors from Clewiston, LaBelle, Moore Haven High Schools and King's Academy. This was followed by a review of the leadership program, highlights of the purpose of the program and a review of the day's agenda by co-facilitators Kim Hamilton and Dr. Deborah Misotti. There were team building exercises, where the students were confronted with the reality of how much, or how little, they actually knew about the two counties and their respective governments. Butch Wilson gave a very informative talk about the beginnings of civilization, in this area, and followed with a tour of the museum through a wonderfully pertinent exhibit now on loan from the Smithsonian Institute, called Journeys. The class highly recommends everyone in the local area take the time to stop in and see this exhibit. It is particularly rewarding to know a World Class museum, like the Smithsonian is af liated with our local one! Lunch at the local Beef O'Brady's, always a pleasant experience, thanks to Kirsten and her wonderful staff, was a pleasant outing. Then back to the museum to a round table discussion on the possibilities in the futures of the young leaders, led by Dr John Huysmann. A brief clean up to help Butch put his meeting room back into order for a Museum Board Meeting and the group walked around the corner to Clewiston City Hall. Clewiston City Hall afforded the young leaders an opportunity to experience the commissions meeting room from all sides. They walked to the podium, sat in the chairs of the respective board members and were walked through the procedures for both Clewiston City and Hendry County Board of County Commissioners meetings. They were then welcomed by the current Chairman of the BOCC, Tris Chapman and both Mayor Rick Miller of Clewiston and City of Clewiston Manager Steve McKowen. These community leaders spoke to the youth, encouraging them to get involved and attend some of these meetings to gain knowledge and insight into the futures of their communities. The youth leaders will meet for a day in early December and the students can look forward to a busy schedule of community service on their Civic Engagement Day. Leadership 2012-13 class begins Submitted photoPictured from the left: Cliff Smith, President of the United Way, and United Way volunteers Traci Owens, Ron Zimmerly, Jennifer Davis, MaryBeth Carroll, Scott Bass, United Way House Manager Arlene Bettencourt and volunteer Susan Harrelle.
