The fees have been suspended since January 2008. That suspension will end at the end of the year and impact fees will automatically be reinstated at 50 percent unless other arrangements are made. City Commissioner Hilda Zimmerly asked if the impact fees had made any difference in economic growth. Ms. Catala responded that there has been no quanti ale difference. Commissioner Dave Lyons put in that impact fees are just part of the package new business expects. Sarah said that, of the surrounding counties, Hendry has the lowest impact fees, except for DeSoto. Up to now, only Helms Road Extension and the design and permitting of CR 833 and 846 have used impact fees in Hendry County. The county seeks input from both LaBelle and Clewiston before deciding what to do about the countywide fees. The city commissioners' input was for the county to continue the suspension of impact fees through 2013. The City of LaBelle has an interlocal agreement with the county to collect impact fees for schools and roads. Hendry County ounty has impact fees on the books for law enforcement, roads, schools, re/ EMS, parks and rec, public facilities and libraries. The board of County Commissioners will have a public meeting on December 13 to make the nal decision.Mayoral successionThere was some discussion on how to clear up the city code with regard to a possible problem in mayoral succession. The local entity requesting the proposed bill will be responsible for placing the legal advertisement in the newspaper. The notice must be broad enough to include all matters contained in the body of the proposed legislation, although the speci c contents need not be listed in detailed form. The function of the notice requirement is to provide reasonable notice to a person w hose interests may be directly affected by proposed legislation so that he or she may inquire further into details of the local bill and, if he or she so desires, seek to prevent enactment or to persuade the Legislature to change the substance of the proposed bill. Hickpochee Ave LaBelle, FL 3 Caloosa Belle November 22, 2012 Community Brief By Savannah Roundssrounds@newszap.com“The doctor said ‘You’re not going to believe this, but they left a pair of scissors inside of your stomach.’” After nearly four hours of surgery, LaBelle resident Danay De la Torre went through a nightmare that she will have to deal with for the rest of her life. It all began in January, when De la Torre scheduled a tummy tuck through a facility in Miami called Vanidades Cosmetic Surgery. She went in for a routine appointment to have blood taken and discuss the procedure, then proceeded to pay the facility nearly $4,000. She arrived for her appointment on January 23 at noon, getting there an hour early to ll out paper work. However, she was unaware that she w ould have to wait until nearly 10 p.m. to see the doctor and have her surgery done. “They kept telling me that the doctor was going to be right in, to just wait for a little bit longer and she would see me in no time,” said De la Torre. “I kept seeing her run back and forth, in and out of the of ce. I nally stopped her and asked what was going on. She just told me to be patient and said that she’d be ready for me in no time.” De la Torre was told not to eat or drink anything the night before, as it would affect the surgery. “I hadn’t eaten for nearly 22 hours when they nally called me back,” said De la Torre. “I was starving, tired, and about ready to leave.” De La Torre was skeptical about the surgeon doing her surgery after she had been working all day. She voiced her concerns, to which nurses told her that the doctor was ne and would do an “excellent job.” She was taken back and prepped for the surgery, which lasted for about four hours. The next thing that De la Torre remembers is being woken up at three in the morning to two nurses telling her that the surgery was over and that it was time for her to go home. “The nurses had to drag me out of the back room. I was screaming and crying from the pain. They gave me a prescription for oxycodone, but seeing as it was three in the morning there was no way to ll it,” said De la Torre. “My husband asked the nurses to give me something for the pain and they said ‘No, she’ll be ne. She’ll be in a little bit of pain, but she’ll be okay.’” With no pain medication to ease the pain, De la Torre was up for the entire night, until the next morning when her husband was able to get her the pain medication that she so desperately needed. After the pain medication began to set in, De la Torre had a more positive outlook on the situation. “Although the situation at the facility was bad, I thought that things were going to get better,” said De la Torre. However, she was very wrong. “A week after the surgery my stomach literally started rotting out. There was a big black hole and it was just getting worse and worse. I called the of ce and the receptionist at the front desk said that everything was ne, but that if I wanted to I could come in and see them. I had my friend come over and take me there. I had to actually be carried inside because I couldn’t walk at all. After seeing my stomach they took me back immediately. “At rst the doctor was saying that she wanted to cut me open again and see what was going on and why my stomach was doing that. Then she spoke with her colleague, came back, and told me that I needed to go to the hospital nearest to my house or I would probably die. I was absolutely terri ed. I felt like I was going to die.” De la Torre rushed to Hendry Regional Medical Center, where she was immediately seen by Dr. Carrao. “Dr. Carrao saved my life,” said De la Torre. Upon seeing the extensive damage done to De la Torre’s stomach, the doctor contacted the facility which did her surgery, asking them how they could let this happen. He was appalled and told De la Torre that she needed to have an MRI immediately. “After they gave me the MRI the doctor told me that there was a huge black hole in my stomach and they didn’t know what it was yet. Then the doctor said ‘You’re not going to believe this, but they left a pair of scissors inside of your stomach.’ “They told me that if I didn’t have emergency surgery done that the infection would spread and that I could die in a matter of hours.” De la Torre was terri ed, but agreed that having the surgery was the only way to go. She was prepped for yet another surgery and taken in early the next morning. Afterwards she was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and monitored heavily. “They had two IV’s full of antibiotics going up each arm,” said De la Torre. Since her rst surgery in February, she has had one more surgery and has been in and out of the hospital numerous times. She feels nothing from her breasts down to her belly button, and from her belly button down she is constantly in intense pain. “I can’t work because I can’t stand or sit or lay down for very long. I have to constantly rearrange myself because I am in so much pain all the time,” said De la Torre. “I can’t function like a normal person any longer. I use the bathroom once a week and can barely bring myself to get out of bed in the morning.” Though she is in constant pain, she is not receiving pain medication any longer. “The doctors don’t want me to get addicted to any of the pain medication,” said De la Torre. “So I am constantly taking Tylenol, even though that really doesn’t make a difference with the pain.” While De la Torre’s emergency surgery was taking place, the surgeon that originally did her surgery at Vanidades thought that it would be a good idea to call De la Torre’s husband. “She actually had the audacity to call my husband and ask us not to sue her,” said De la Torre. “She said that she would do any surgery that we wanted for free and make me look pretty again.” However, looking pretty is the least of De l a Torre’s concerns. With ve children and no current job because of the state that she is currentl y in, she just wants to have her old life back. “I can hardly take care of [my children] right now because of this. My little twelve year old asked me when I was going to ‘get back to normal’ the other day,” said De la Torre. De la Torre is currently in the process of nding a lawyer and says that she is frustrated but is “trying to get back to some semblance of normalcy.” Vanidades Cosmetic Surgery was contacted, but claimed that the surgeon which did De l a Torre’s surgery is no longer working at their facility. They could give no information as to what happened and seemed to have no memory o f anything going astray. W oman who had tummy tuck claims she suffered nightmare ordeal

Job Fair Tipsby Matt KindermannI have recently been on the employer side of two job fairs and several interviews, and I know the job fair is a routine topic in this column but, there are a lot of preparation that goes into attending one to ensure you make a positive lasting impression. First, unlike a traditional interview where the employer has reviewed your application and knows you are quali ed for the position, a job fair is like a reverse application process, and it is all about personality. Many employers have similar complaints about candidates; they dress provocatively, or too relaxed, they overdo the cologne or perfume, they do not look them in the eye and they ramble during simple questions. You should wear business casual clothes, slacks and a nice shirt for both men and women will suf ce, without showing any cleavage or too much skin. Keep jewelry to a two piece minimum, and keep the scents to a low roar. No one should smell you, either good or bad! Approach the employer with a smile and rm handshake while looking them in the eye and introducing yourself with your name and a brief background. Tell them you are interested in their company and ask what their open positions are. Relate anything that interests you to your own background. Do not ask what they have for you, this is about what you have to offer them. While standing in lines, do not appear bored or impatient. They can see you mingling and will make a mental note of how personable you appear, so that when you make it to their table they already have an impression about you. Employers want to know you will engage their customers in a friendly and professional manner and you should conduct yourself at a job fair as if you were already working the oor for them. For more tips, see Connie at the LaBelle of ce and she will give you a job fair tip sheet.Southwest Florida Works is the regional state workforce board for Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. But in early America, days of Thanksgiving weren't always about food. For many of us, the meaning of Thanksgiving usually includes feasting, four-day weekends, football games, oats, family reunions or a forerunner to Christmas festivities. I enjoy watching the ballgames, seeing the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and sneaking into the kitchen for a cold turkey sandwich as any true American man does. The rst Thanksgiving," however, was neither a feast nor a holiday, but a simple gathering. Following the May ower's arrival at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620, the Pilgrims suffered the lose of 46 of their original 102 colonists. With the help of 91 Indians, the remaining Pilgrims survived the bitter winter and yielded a bountiful harvest in 1621. In celebration, a traditional English harvest festival, lasting three days brought the Pilgrims and natives to unite in a "thanksgiving" observance. This "thanksgiving" meal would not be celebrated again until June of 1676. On June 29 the community of Charlestown, Massachusetts, proclaimed a day of thanksgiving for their good fortune. Ironically, this celebration excluded the Indians, as the colonists' recognized their recent victory over the "heathen natives." One hundred years later, in October of 1777, all 13 colonies participated in a one-time "thanksgiving" celebration which commemorated the patriotic victory over the British at Saratoga. It would take a span of over 150 more years to establish Thanksgiving as we celebrate it -George Washington proclaimed it a National holiday in 1789, Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November in 1863, and Congress sanctioned it as a legal holiday in 1941. It is a sad travesty that we are losing our true historical understanding and heritage of our national traditions. They are RICH with incredible meaning, purpose and understanding of our many national blessings that we take for granted. When you understand our true history the appreciation we should have for our Patriarchs and their relationship with God should serve as a model that we should once again emulate in terms of how grateful we need to be as a People before God. Re ecting American religious practice, Presidents and Congresses from the beginning of the republic have from time to time designated days of fasting and thanksgiving (the Thanksgiving holiday we continue to celebrate on the third Thursday of November was established by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War). Following a resolution of Congress, President George Washington proclaimed Thursday the 26th of November 1789 a day of "public thanksgiving and prayer" devoted to "the service of that great and glorious Being who is the bene cent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be." In setting aside a day for Thanksgiving, Washington established a non-sectarian tone for these devotions and stressed political, moral and intellectual blessings that make self-government possible, in addition to personal and national repentance. Although the First Amendment prevents Congress from establishing a religion or prohibiting its free exercise, Presidents, as well as Congress, have always recognized the American regard for sacred practices and beliefs. Thus, throughout American history, Presidents have offered non-sectarian prayers for the victory of the military and in the wake of catastrophes. Transcending passionate quarrels over the proper role of religion in politics, the Thanksgiving Proclamation reminds us how natural their relationship has been. While church and state are separate, religion and politics, in their American re nement, prop each other up. Therefore this Thursday, in the words o f Washington, we read the following; [T]hen unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government o f wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetl y and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best. New data released by the Florida Department of Health (DOH) shows that 23 percent fewer Florida high school students are current cigarette smokers compared to 2010, a decline in overall tobacco use among youth. “The decrease in tobacco use among our state’s youth is an encouraging indication of the effectiveness of our tobacco prevention programs, yet our work is not done,” said State Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong. “We in Florida are fortunate to have a comprehensive program that provides countylevel community interventions and continued education for all youth. The Department remains committed to preventing smoking in the rst place as we help current smokers quit.” The 2012 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey (FYTS) shows: 10.1 percent of high school students reported current cigarette use, meaning they smoked a cigarette at least once during the past 30 days, a 22.6 percent decrease compared to 2010. 11.4 percent of high school students reported current cigar use, a 13.6 decline compared to 2010. 7.7 percent reported current hookah use, a 6.1 percent decrease compared to 2010. 5.6 percent of high school students reported current smokeless tobacco use, a 12.5 percent decrease compared to 2010. In 2010, DOH re-launched a comprehensive media campaign to demonstrate severe health and emotional toll of tobacco-related death and disease. Research proves that hard-hitting media campaigns are effective at reducing youth tobacco initiation. The Florida data comes on the heels of a national report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that shows an alarming increase in the use of non-cigarette smoked tobacco products. The avoring and lower costs of these products make them especially appealing to teens. Y outh mistakenly believe avored tobacco, to be less harmful than their nonavored counterparts. Nearly nine out of ten smokers start by age 18. The number of teens who try or habitually use tobacco increases with each increasing grade level. Teens whose parents strongly disapprove of their tobacco use – even if they use tobacco themselves – are less likely to take up tobacco. Yet, the 2012 FYTS shows that only 50.4 percent of high school students had talked with a parent or guardian about the dangers of tobacco in the past year. A parent’s own tobacco use signi cantly in uences their child’s decision to use tobacco. One important way Floridians can help prevent tobacco use is by quitting. The Florida Department of Health’s Tobacco Free Florida programs offers free and convenient quit resources. For more information, visit www.tobaccofree orida.com .Smokers and smokeless tobacco users interested in quitting are encouraged to call the Florida Quitline at 1-877-U-CAN-NOW to speak with a Quit Coach. The Hendry and Glades County Tobacco Free Partnerships support local tobacco prevention efforts. If you are interested in becoming a partner, please contact Doug Freer at the Glades County Health Department at (863) 946–0707 x404 or Valarie James at the Hendry County Health Department at (863) 674-4041 x128. Youth-based tobacco prevention efforts are conducted by Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) chapters in Glades County, grades 6–8 at West Glades School and grades 6–12 at Moore Haven Elementary and Junior Senior High School. In Hendry County, grades 6–8 at LaBelle and Clewiston Middle Schools and grades 9–12 at LaBelle and Clewiston High Schools. Students involved in SWAT will be empowered, learning advocacy and leadership skills and having fun doing it. People expect professionalism and a solid knowledge of medications at their pharmacy, but with J&J Pharmacy that is, K&M Drugs you also get personal service and a genuinely friendly atmosphere. Recently, the pharmacy people in LaBelle have known for years as J&J changed its name to K&M. Aside from the new sign, though, customers won’t notice a thing. Changing a business name can be a bit of a hassle. “I wanted to wait for the community to get used to me. I know people don’t like change,” Pharmacist Manager/Owner Ayman said. He’s been at the store for two years. His brothers, Haitham and Kasem, are also pharmacists. Haitham is pharmacist/ manger of the Clewiston store and Kasem recently opened the store in Belle Glade. Another brother, Amir, is a cardiologist in New York City. Ayman takes pride in K&M’s personable way of doing business. “We know our customers by their rst names. We care about our patients. It’s a hometown pharmacy with hometown people.” He went on to say K&M offers fast service and the best prices. Ayman said he and his brothers have a heart for the community and their neighbors. They learned by watching their father, over the years. “He never turned anybody down who needed help,” Ayman recalled. The family is well known in the area. For years Aymen’s father Dr. Kaki, has practiced medicine in Clewiston. Community minded, K&M Drugs is highly involved with Drug Free Hendry County and participates in Operation Medicine Cabinet. The brothers speak at area schools on the evils of drug addiction and proudly donate to community causes. The pharmacy has built its name on customer service and good pricing, knowing how important price is in these times, Aymen said. In addition to prescription and over-thecounter medications, K&M offers Durable Medical Equipment wheelchairs, glucose monitors and the like, but it’s also a great place to pick up unique gift items. Of course, K&M accepts all major insurances including Medicaid and Medicare. Friendly, professional service with a heart for its community. Give blood at Hendry health department by Pudge Lehman The holidays are fast approaching so get a head start on stuff. Start saving assorted containers to send home leftovers after holiday dinners. Personally, I think plastic bags are the best wa y to go. When pouring leftover gravy or anything soupy, put the bag in a bowl or an y container that will keep it upright before starting to pour. Do as much cooking and freezing as you can, now, before the rush so you can spend as much time as possible with your famil y and company. My sister Dawne, who had seven children, used to do this a lot. We will never forget the “twice baked potato asco.” It’s always wise to expect at least something to go terribly wrong! Be sure to take a sturdy rubber band to these holiday dinners so that when you eat too much... and you will... just push one end of the rubber band through the top button hole and stick the other end through the loop, then just put the end over the button and you can add a few inches. If you wear a belt (I personally haven’t worn one in approximately 65 years for obvious reasons) it will cover it nicely. The best thing to do, of course, is to follow my advice and wear stretchy pants with an elastic waist. You are older than dirt if you remember: stuff came from stores without safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had tried to poison perfect strangers or taking drugs meant orange avored chewable aspirin... or... You had to walk through the house to answer the phone and had to stay there to talk... It’s a miracle us “ole timers“ lasted as long as we have Witches Brew
