Babies born with this genetic condition have skin that is so delicate and fragile that any type of friction can cause severe blistering, outside and inside the body. It is extremely painful and there is no cure. The only treatment is daily wound care and bandaging. It also carries a severe stigma. Children with the condition suffer stares and shunning by other kids and even adults who do not understand it. Two LaBelle children, Corbyn and Novie Kohutek, and their family live with the daily stress of EB. At just 12 and 11, respectively, Corbyn and Novie have a message for the bigger world: We may look a little different but we’re just like you. When the two were small, their arms and legs had to be bandaged nightly. Their outside activities have to be curtailed. Both children are small for their age and delicate looking, but their smiles are just as engaging as anyone’s. Corbyn and Novie have been in public school but this year have begun virtual school ve hours a dayand they’re very happy with it. Of course, Corbyn likes being able to get up when he wants to don’t we all but he gets very serious when he says that kids stare and that makes him uncomfortable, but it’s even worse when adults stare. And continue to stare. “I’d like to tell them I was born with a rare skin disorder. I’m just like you,” he said. Both can still go to LMS school dances, games and participate in clubs. Corbyn would like to be in FBLA. He doesn’t like to read Tiny kids with big hearts Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. HAPPENINGSat the LaBelles #1 Restaurant 2 Caloosa Belle November 8, 2012but he loves math and video games. Novie is the exact opposite. She’s an avid reader and is currently working her way through the Harry Potter series. Corbyn’s the shy one; Novie is more outgoing Both kids love drama and have been on stage with the Firehouse Players in LaBelle numerous times, including the theater’s summer production of Big Bad Musical. Corbyn was in the LMS production of Dog Brain last year. Tiny Novie has an amazing singing voice and won the LeHigh Spring Festival competition last year $200 and a trophy. Next year she won’t compete but will be part of the entertainment. Both enjoy karaoke at American Legion Post 130 where mom is the new Commander and dad is the Sons of the Legion Sgt. at A rms. Corbyn is the youngest member of the SAL and Novie is in the Junior Auxiliary. A t the post they talk to older people and also help with the Friday night sh fry. Novie explained that they’re “fragile like butter y wings” and it hurts when someone grabs them. And that’s not all that hurts. She w ants people to know that, “We’re disabled, not stupid.” Sometimes people’s reaction to them leaves the kids with that impression. Like all kids, they have dreams. Novie w ants to be a singer or a chef and Corbyn has his heart set on becoming a video game tester. Novie said the coolest part of her is her heart; Corbyn said it’s his stomach. He said that, when people stare, he sometimes touches them and says “Now y ou’ve got it! They freak out!” It’s not true, and maybe not nice, but then, staring isn’t nice either. Novie says that Angela Drapal, who w orks at the Legion Post is the nicest to them. She’s their “second mom” and “she doesn’t look at me like other people do.” Corbyn said their older brother Bryce is nicest to him because he makes him food. (Well, he did say his coolest part was his stomach.) They also have an older sister, Allyssa, who just left for college. Corbyn and Novie’s dad, Richard, says philosophically, “We have good and bad days” but it’s not as dif cult as it was when they were younger. He said families like theirs have a great asset in the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association of America (DEBRA), a national nonpro t organization that funds research for treatment and eventually a cure. It also provides direct services and support for EB patients and their families. Through DEBRA they met other parents with these special children. Myra said it’s “the best place to learn about the condition and how to deal with it.” You can nd information at www.Debra.org or 212-868-1573. EB Awareness Week, October 25-31, just passed, but Corbyn and Novie have a message. Don’t treat them different because they’re not not in any important way. nity supper and learn about Relay. More Interview Questionsby Matt KindermannThis week we will discuss some other interview questions and how you should form your answer. The two types of interview structures are behavioral/situational and traditional. Traditional interview questions are designed for speci c, factual answers and are mostly closed-ended and veri able. Behavioral interview questions are designed to reveal the "real you" in hypothetical situations. If you plan for a Behavioral-type interview, you should be more than prepared for a traditional-type interview. One good question that employers give to open up the interview, and one that often stumps the job seeker which sets the tone for the rest of the interview, is "tell us a little about yourself." You should have a 30 to 45second response planned for this question that highlights your educational, professional and social achievements. This question is not the same as asking a rst date to tell you more about themselves, keep your answer professional and topic related. For instance, person who is facing a nancial crisis, family problems and medicals issues, could answer by saying "I graduated with my AS in 1992 and I went to work for a small business doing bookkeeping and maintaining the cash registers. I felt that my skills could be better used in a more challenging environment so I began researching larger rms where I found you. I knew I wanted to work here as soon as I read about how the company gives back to the local community. I began to take refresher classes in spreadsheets and nancing, which lead me to go back to school part time in order to pursue my BS in accounting. When I saw this position advertised I just knew that it was the perfect match for me." The object of this question from the employer perspective is to get the candidate to spill some personal information in order to see if there is any drama that could potentially affect job performance. Revealing any personal information beyond academic or professional experience can affect the way the interviewers perceive you. Stick to your resume, if it did not go on the application, think twice about talking about is in the interview. For best perceptions, always limit your answers to 45 seconds or less to avoid rambling and boring everyone. Smile inbetween questions, look each interviewer in the eyes and change your in ection once or twice to show off your communications skills. In addition, Hendry County is the second largest producer of sugarcane, third largest in vegetable production and fth largest in beef cattle. This year's tour will feature a variety of interesting stops at some of Florida's most sophisticated agricultural operations including vegetable transplant and ornamental nurseries, citrus, sod, sugarcane and vegetable production as well as one of the largest beef cattle ranches in the state. Security in this day and age has become a concern for everyone, but it has become a necessity for one local charity. The Talkin’ Monkeys Project, an educational primate sanctuary and Service Learning Center for colleges and universities around the world, has recently found itself in dire need of a security system. The charity, a xture in our community for almost ten years, has been receiving aggressive harassment from a singular source for several years, but when death threats to both human and non human primates began, the directors of the sanctuary knew they needed more help. Many law enforcement agencies became involved and the consensus was for a state of the art surv eillance security system to be installed for protection and to aid in the conviction in any criminal activity. Unfortunately, this type of system comes at great expense. The Talkin’ Monkeys Project posted on Facebook their concerns and needs and concerned members of our community jumped into action to help. Many residents and businesses from Hendry, Glades and Lee counties rallied to help the sanctuary by holding a raf e to offset this expense! Kim Hamilton, and Mary and Craig Bartoshuk set the wheels in motion to obtain prizes and print tickets. Numerous people helped to sell tickets. Prizes poured in from all over the United States, including other primate conservation centers and zoos in California, North Carolina and Texas. The monkeys and apes helped too, by painting some pictures for the raf e! Donations poured in from all over the world from Australia, Japan, Canada, Germany, England, Ireland and Scotland as well as from friends here in the United States. The support was overwhelmingandafer the rst batch of tickets were sold, more had to be printed! The drawing was held at the sanctuary on October 21 with the committee watching as Dobby, the four-year-old gibbon pulled the tickets. Kim Hamilton held the large container with the ticket stubs, Mary Bartoshuk documented the winners, Dr. Misotti held Dobby’s hand and Craig Bartoshuk photographed the event. Marc and Whitney Ellis of H2O Pictures of Sarasota, volunteers of the sanctuary for many years, coordinated and negotiated with tech companies to purchase the equipment at greatly reduced rates and arranged for the wiring to be donated. They also arranged for the computer tech to set up the system upon installation, pro bono. The 800+ feet of conduit for the wiring was donated by Quality Electric of Clewiston and was installed by volunteers, along with the poles to hold the cameras. Volunteers gathered to pull the wires, set the cameras and tie it all into the computer system. The monies from the raf e supplied the nal resources needed to complete the system and allow it to be accessible on line as requested by law enforcement agencies. The system is online for the Hendry County Sheriff’s of ce and other agencies to tie into it 24/7. The cameras are wide angle lens with infra red and audio. The system is capable of seven day storage of video and audio. It is a labor of love for the entire global community and it begins and ends in Hendry County. The Talkin’ Monkeys Project and its charges are all truly grateful for the spontaneous and overwhelming support. 216 S. by Sarah LappThe LaBelle High School marching band, led by new band instructor, Ms. Jennifer Ponsart, hit all the right notes on Saturday, Oct. 27. The band traveled to Gulf Coast High School in Naples for their annual Music Performance Assessment, better known as MPA’s, to compete in the district 18 category. Drum majors Courtney Inman and Frankie Kendrick, along with color guard captain Jessica Smith, led the band to an “Excellent” overall rating. The Cowboy band competed alongside 20 other schools in four scrutinized categories: musicianship, marching technique, auxiliary, and general effect. The Cowboy band received three “excellent”s and a single “good” to secure their composite score of “Excellent.” “I had expected us to receive a “Good,” so when I found out that we did even better, I jumped up and down, yelled, and ran around. It is even more special to do this well, because it is my Senior year,” Timothy Smith recounted. Color guard member Trisha Donaldson admitted that “even though I got terribly sunburned at MPA’s, it was still a great time. I was glad to go out with a bang.” In the weeks leading up to MPA’s, the Cowboy band revved up their tempo to prepare for the stiff judging and competition at Gulf Coast High School. “We kept the same rehearsal times, during 5th period and every Monday evening, but greatly increased our dedication. M y band poured everything they had into their practices. Once we arrived at MPA’s, the wind started to pick up, and I was worried about the ags getting tossed around. But, the entire band and color guard performed perfectly. I could not be more proud. Those kids were simply amazing,” Ms. Ponsart smiled. The Cowboy band, dominated by freshmen and emerging with a brand new instructor, overcame blustering winds on the day of the Homecoming Dance to snag the honor of an “excellent” show. Now, that is music to my ears. 9 Caloosa Belle November 8, 2012 Submitted photo/ Michael FidlerRotary donationLaBelle Rotarians donating $500 to local football team LHS Cowboy Marching Band in sync at MPA’s Submitted photoLaBelle High School Marching Band Submitted photo/ Steve HeinCross Country celebrationThe varsity boys and girls team both advance to the regional cross country championships at Anclote High School in Holiday, Florida, this Saturday, November 10.
