Partly because of experience and partly because of the passion they have for their work. Randy Bengston has served Hendry County well for some three decades in a eld that demands excellence and heart. County nances led to his layoff and retirement as Director of Public Safety. He is leaving a much better, stronger department than the one he joined so many years ago. As of today, October 25, Director of Operations Donna Akin stepped into the role he's vacating after so many years. Randy was her original EMS instructor back in 1980. Under his guidance, she said she has grown into this position, learning patience along the way. She said that over the years he has allowed, and even encouraged, them to act as a team. "We're opposites," she admitted, "but in a way that's what has ensured the success of this department. By consulting together, we've always managed to come up with an appropriate plan." Under his leadership, she said this department has become the well recognized, respected rural EMS department it is. "I feel con dent moving forward at the helm. It's been a learning curve but Randy's allowed me to prepare and educate myself. He's done so much for this county that's been taken for granted. I can't remember a time when he ever said no, he didn't have the time to do something." The department will continue, she is con dent, in large part due to his preparation and sacri ce. Reared in Nebraska, Randy never had Bengston retires from county "A county commissioner's job is to look out for the people's best interests." A Democrat, Don Davis has been a strong leader in LaBelle since coming here in 1964. He served as a county commissioner for 14 years and said he feels the need to run for of ce again as Democratic candidate for District 2 County Commission Seat. Mr. Davis served in the US Army in the late 50s. When he moved here the town had two paved streets, no red lights or street signs. As a former commissioner and longtime businessman, he said he helped LaBelle grow into a thriving community. He has been a businessman in LaBelle for over 50 years and currently owns Big V and Don's Steak House restaurants. He said he's concerned about county fees that stymie growth and said he would do away with any impact fees. They could be reenacted later if needed. Coming down squarely on the side of small business, Mr. Davis said, "Currently it takes four or ve months to get permits approved. An applicant should have an answer in no later than eight weeks." He said he would be a strong advocate of cutting "foolish spending" and a "good steward of your tax dollars so your money is working for you." He added, "I feel the need to help LaBelle grow. I need you to help me make this happen." He was a member of the Jaycees when they began the Swamp Cabbage Festival in 1967 and served as President in 1970. He was an active Rotarian and Lion. LaBelle's youth have always been able to count on Mr. Davis' support. As a former county commissioner he helped provide the rst park and then the softball park across from the Methodist church. DavisPratt Park, a place for all to play sports, was created from 20 acres of grove and named for Mr. Davis and his colleague Don Pratt. He was president of the Davis runs for District 3 seat Calosoa Belle/ Patty BrantRandy Bengston Don Davis Christian rodeo November 3The LaBelle Gathering of Christian Men and The Gesthemane Ranch Rodeo Association will be sponsoring the third Annual Christian Rodeo on Nov. 3, at the LaBelle Rodeo Arena located on SR 29, 1/4 mile south of CowboyWay and the Winn Dixie store in LaBelle. He was selected the chamber’s Man of the Year in 1992. He continues his tradition of assistance to local sports with his strong support of a new sports park east of LaBelle. “We have to give people a reason to come here; we have to make it an attractive place for people to live and run a business in order to grow. I think I can help to do that. We need a strong board and the cooperation of both city and county governments to make that happen” Finally, Mr. Davis believes in the average citizen and said, “The Courthouse does not belong to the county commissioners, it belongs to you.” DavisContinued From Page 1 any inclination to head to Florida. He said he was just in the second grade, on a eld trip to the local re department when he fell in love with the job. By the time he was drafted in 1969, he already had his rst aid instructor’s license and was just waiting till he turned 21 to become a volunteer reghter. He’d already been a medic for two years. In the Army he served in Japan at an orthopedic intensive care and burn center for Southeastern Asia. “It was great experience,” he said. He made arti cial limbs for four years and returned to Nebraska when he was discharged in 1975. He applied for many jobs, but the only responses came from Tampa and St. Petersburg, so he headed south. That job didn’t work out but he went to work for a private ambulance service in Pinellas County and quickly rose from EMT to supervisor. A newspaper ad for the Director for Ambulance Service in Hendry and Glades brought him here in May 1977 to work for the hospital ambulance service. He became director for Hendry County Hospital ambulance in Hendry and Glades Dec. 7, 1981, and later went to Belle Glade. A paramedic there for four months, he rose to director, a postion he held until September 1985. He came back to Hendry County and just months later, on October 1, 1985, the county took over the ambulance service from the hospital and Randy became ambulance director. In 1991 he took over three county re departments: Montura, Felda and Pioneer when they consolidated. Several years ago he became Public Safety Director overseeing EMS, county re departments, Emergency Management and the 911 Coordinator. The county is redistributing duties and, when Randy leaves Emergency Management Director Lupe Taylor will add the 911 Coordinator to her supervisory responsibilities. EMS Operations Chief Aken will handle EMS and county re departments. In his many years at the helm of Hendry’s public safety department, Randy said he is proudest of bringing Hendry County from a basic life support to an advance life support agency a milestone that he said became a reality through the hard work of his staff. “I always had great of cers. When they work with you it makes it all easier,” he commented. “I always tried to improve every year,” he said. As he moves on, though, he worries that county budget cuts may force the ambulance service backwards. As he leaves, he feels the Hendry County EMS can compare equally with “more advanced” counties like Lee County and even outshine them. They have to be good we’re so far away from the hospital. Randy said he’s proud of his tough screening program for paramedics and EMTs. After their practical written exam, they have to pass an oral interview. Even after being hired a new EMT goes through a 3-6 week training period and a paramedic 12 weeks more. Then, the new employee must pass the medical director’s test to become credentialled. “We have no ve-minute medics,” he said. They all go through strenuous training. He said he understands this is a “training ground” for emergency medical personnel. Eventually they go to a larger county for more money. It’s just a way of life, he said, adding proudly, “They’re glad to get our guys.” Randy also recalls that a former Hendr y EMT/Paramedic Dino Villani, who worked in LaBelle, became EMS Director for Florid a at one time. He always stressed education for his staff to keep your mind going. Years ago, when Randy taught the Hendry County School Board EMT class, Donn a Aken now his Chief of Operations was one of his rst students. She has since left and returned, went to re school, and will receive her Masters Degree in Admnistration in December. Justi ably proud of his protege, he said he has no qualms about turning over the reins. She will be moving the department forward as Operations Chief EMS / Fire. He added that she is “extremely loyal to this county. The county in good hands.” In fact, Donna is responsible for getting the $417,000 federal grant for the county’s mandatory 800 megahertz radios. Randy plans to take a little time off to head back to Nebraska for a while with his wife, Susanne, but plans to continue working part time for surgical clerical a half da y and teach for the Southwest Florida Safet y Consultants part time. He also looks forward to volunteering at the Emergenc y Operations Center and for EMS if Donna should need a little help. RetiresContinued From Page 1

A rrest Reports KEEP THE CHANGE! SPUN SUGARI love to eat spun sugar when I am at the Hendry County Fair. United States Sugar Corporation now tries to spin its efforts to keep its tax break by having its hired-gun Tampa attorney write a paid political ad explaining just why it is good for the taxpayers of Hendry County that US Sugar be entitled to contract … forever … as to the manner in which its multi-million dollar facilities are assessed. Its attorney does not cite one authoritative appraisal text supporting the contract. Their lawyer is not an appraiser, as I am, he is simply spinning sugar as fast as he can. When is the last time you saw a taxpayers attorney spin his clients views into a local Property Appraisers race? This is an example of US Sugars desperation to keep its taxes low and raise yours. US Sugars tactics remind me of the adage that if you are in a lawsuit you “rst argue the law and if the law is against you, argue the facts, and if you cant argue the facts, argue with the jury. In this election, you, the taxpayers of Hendry County, are the jury. Many of you have called to tell me to continue my efforts to see that US Sugar pays its fair share of taxes and not to cave in to its bullying. I really appreciate your support and intend to do just that. My opponent has been strangely silent as to how she would appraise US Sugars property if she should win the election. Her silence speaks louder than her words. Dont forget to vote on November 6, your property taxes are at risk if US Sugar wins the Property Appraisers election. By Pat DobbinsYou’ve probably heard stories about dengue fever, transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Miami-Dade County Health Department of cials con rmed that a Miami-Dade resident contracted Dengue Fever the rst known case of locally acquired Dengue in Miami-Dade County in 2012. Symptoms can include a high fever, severe headache, severe pain behind the eyes, joint pain, muscle and bone pain, rash, mild bleeding in the nose or gums or easy bruising. The Hendry and Glades County Health Departments want to remind folks it is not spread from person to person and is seldom fatal except to the very young or the elderly (who may have other health conditions). Prevention is Key Being outside means you’re at risk for mosquito bites. Take basic precautions to avoid getting mosquito bites and prevent mosquitoes from multiplying by following these recommendations: Drain standing water: Drain water from garbage cans, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, owerpots or any other containers water has collected. Discarded old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances and other items that aren’t being used. Empty and clean birdbaths and pet’s water bowls at least once or twice a week. Cover your skin with: ClothingIf you must be outside when mosquitoes are active, cover up. Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves. Repellent Apply mosquito repellent to bare skin and clothing according to the label, with 10-30 percent DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535. Use mosquito netting to protect children younger than 2 months old. Cover openings with screens: Keep mosquitoes out of your house. Repair broken screening on windows, doors, porches, and patios. There is no speci c medication for dengue but people who think they may have dengue should consult their healthcare provider. Tricia Boone Caloosa Humane Societ y Thank You Patricia Dobbins Dif cult Questions: Arrestsby Matt KindermannMany times, customers ask us for advice concerning the inevitable application question “Have you ever been convicted of a crime?” Most of the time, the natural inclination is that the crime was either expunged through a plead of nolo contendere, or because an attorney said not to worry about it in the future. However, if you have ever been arrested, a record was created and you should consider that record to be accessible. Even though employers cannot ask you if you have ever been arrested, they can ask if you have ever been convicted. A plea of not guilty, nolo contendere, or even a reduced or mitigated sentence for time served should be considered a conviction. I know that people do not like to hear that, but you would not want to begin a promising job only to be red shortly after when a routine background investigation brings up questions to answers you provided on your application. November is National Diabetes Month and the American Optometric Association wants to heighten awareness of the importance of regular, comprehensive eye exams for individuals at high risk for diabetes. Being aware of these risks can help affected individuals and their optometrists monitor their eye health. This disease interferes with the body’s ability to use and store sugar. Diabetic retinopathy, a weakening or swelling of the tiny blood vessels in the retina of the eye is the most serious of the possibly damaging effects to the eyes. If left untreated, blindness can occur. Be aware of the warning signs of diabetes and seek medical attention if you have one or more: frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, and blurry vision. Obesity and lack of exercise are recognized precursors to the disease. If you or a loved one has diabetes or is at risk for being diagnosed, be certain your optometrist is on your list of annual well-health check-ups. National Diabetes Month

From good ol' country fun to the trials of a regular working stiff, and even into on man's soul searching loneliness, Sam's oneof-a-kind vocals and smokin' guitar pickin' never failed to engender a reaction from his audience. His friends, family and fans lost Sam in 2000, but now his widow, Marilyn and her friend Bobbie Conrad are putting together a long overdue tribute to the man and his music in LaBelle where his many fans heard him play so often at the Long Branch. The women have been in LaBelle, armed with CDs of Sam's music to help generate excitement over the tribute. They were overwhelmed by the welcome they received from the many folks who remember Sam and his music. The Kickin' Up a Honky Tonk Tribute is planned for January 19 and 20 at the LaBelle Rodeo Arena. Raised in Basinger, FL, outside of Okeechobee, Sam attended Okeechobee schools and learned to play guitar and sing from his mama all centered around churches, of course. In addition to his musical legacy, Sam was also a Navy veteran who served in the early 60s on USS Caloosahatchee/AO-98. The tanker delivered fuel to battle ships and other naval vessels. Sam's fans will be thrilled with the tribute CD Songs of the Oil Field the women are making available for the fund raiser. The rich sounds of Okeechobee on My Mind, Blue Train, Old Pair of Shoes, Freeborn Man and his Minstrel Man come through like Sam never left. Lance "Bubba" Whidden has donated a beautiful oil painting for T-shirt design to promote the bene t. The painting is displayed at the chamber of commerce. Donations from the bene t will go to Joyce Meyers Ministries, the Wounded Warriors Project, Hope Hospice of LaBelle, the Steven Zamarron family and the Ruan and Rosa Rodriguez Family of LaBelle. Bobbie and Marilyn will be at VFW Post 10100 on SR 29S Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26-28, beginning in the afternoon about 1 p.m. They'll have music, banners and fund raiser CDs of Sam's music available to help the cause. The LaBelle High School Golf Team nished up their 2012 season. Their record was 12 and 5. They retained the title in the Hendry/ Glades Championship which was played on Tuesday, October 9, in Clewiston. The Cowboys were the defending champions and knew it would be tough to win the tournament two years in a row. The team came through shooting a 191 improving on the last year total of 200. Nick Wegscheid (senior) was the low medalist in 2011 and shot a 48, but Alton Burton (senior) shot a 45 to become the 2012 low medalist. The rest of the Cowboys played very well w ith Mark Sloan (junior) shooting a 48, Alexander Hernandez (senior) a 50, Ronnie Burton (senior) a 51 and Chandler McCormick (sophomore) a 63. On October 15 the team traveled to Port Charlotte for their district tournament. The Cowboys performed very well, shooting a 381. This score was good enough to place fth out of the nine teams represented at districts. Nick Wegscheid and Alton Burton shot a 93, Ronnie Burton a 94, Mark Sloan a 101 and Alexander Hernandez a 116. The team is looking for Baylen McCormick (freshman) and Matthew Reyna (freshman) to step up next year and help returners Mark Sloan and Chandler McCormick continue what has been a very strong golf run at LaBelle High School. All the players want to thank The Glades for letting them practice and have matches on their course this year. They would also like to thank Daniel and Nan Aiken for donating a set of brand new clubs that the team will be raf ing off and Mr. LW Howard for the golf bag he donated to the team. They have also had other donations of clubs and equipment from individuals (Mrs. Gayle Martinez and Oxbow Billie). These donations help provide equipment for the players and the team during the year. The team would like to express to their parents and Coach Wegscheid a huge thank you for all the time and effort they have put in getting them to the matches and practices this year. This season would not have been possible without them and to Coach Dunbar for lending the van to the team whenever it was possible. They also appreciate the patience the teachers at LaBelle High have shown while the team has been checking out to go these matches and to the Administration for understanding these matches are important to the development of their golf game. by Hal BennettThe LaBelle Middle School Bronco football team took one step closer to obtaining their goal of an undefeated season this past w eek, by defeating the Clewiston Tigers 54-38 at LaBelle High School. The Broncos have improved their record to 7-0 on the season with the win over Clewiston. Scoring got started early as Michael Lopez would return the opening kickoff 76 y ards for a touchdown. Broncos blocking back David DeLeon would add the two-point conversion to give the Broncos an early 8-0 lead. The Bronco defense would hold, giving the offense the ball back on their own 26y ard line. The Tiger defense also stiffened on LaBelle’s next possession and forced a punt. W hat a punt it was! Michael Lopez booted the ball 59 yards, all the way down to the Tiger four-yard line! The second quarter started with Bronco defense once again holding the Tigers and forcing a punt. The ball sailed over the punter’s head and was downed by Clewiston at the LaBelle one-yard line. On the v ery next play, Michael Lopez would power in from one yard out to give the Broncos a 14-0 lead. Lopez would then tack on the two-point conversion, making the score LaBelle 16, Clewiston 0. It did not take long for the sleeping Clewiston giant to awaken, as two plays later a Tiger fullback roared through the LaBelle defense for a 48-yard touchdown run. The Tigers would tack on the two-point conversion to cut the score to 16-8. The Bronco offense would sputter and on third down and 16, Lopez would once again answer, ripping off a 73-yard touchdown run to advance the score to 22-8. The Tigers would get great eld position off their kickoff return, moving the ball all the way to the LaBelle 44-yard line. Once again the speedy Clewiston fullback would race up the middle on his way toward a 43 yard touchdown run. The Tigers added the twopoint conversion and the score would be LaBelle 22, Clewiston 16. The Broncos would go to work in their two-minute offense getting some big runs from Michael Lopez and David DeLeon, moving the ball down to the Tiger 25-yard line with less than a minute remaining in the rst half. Then Lopez would go to work through the air, completing two out of his next three passes, the rst a 15y ard completion to right end Buster Herrera, putting the ball at the Clewiston 10-yard line. Lopez’s second completion, a ten-yarder to wingback Tylor Vetten was good for the touchdown, giving the Broncos a 28-16 lead. David DeLeon powered in for the two-point conversion, making the halftime score, LaBelle 30, Clewiston 16. The Clewiston Tigers came out in the second half, and muscled their way down the eld, scoring on their opening possession from one yard out on a quarterback sneak. The Bronco defense held them out of the end zone for the two-point conversion making the score LaBelle 30-Clewistion 22. The Broncos would answer, with an impressive 66-yard drive that saw running back Michael Lopez score from three yards out. Lopez then connected with wingback Tylor Vetten for the two-point conversion making the score 38-22. The Bronco defense could still not contain the Tiger speed as Clewiston used two big plays to work down eld and score on a ve-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion try was good and this cut the lead to eight for the Broncos, 38-30. The Broncos next possession marched down the eld, due in part by some powerful running by blocking back David DeLeon. DeLeon’s 61-yard run to the Tiger two-yard line would set up the Broncos rst-and-goal. The next snap was again to DeLeon, who plowed over three Tiger defenders to bulldoze his way into the end zone. Lopez added the two-point conversion run and the Broncos lead was 46-30. The Tigers would again use their speed to gain huge sums of yardage on the LaBelle defense, as they worked their way downeld and would score on a three-yard run. The two-point conversion was good and the Bronco lead was cut to eight again, 46-38. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Broncos’ Tyler Burton, setting up the offense at the 50-yard line. Michael Lopez would take a botched snap and race 48 yards for the touchdown. Lopez added the twopoint conversion making the score 54-38. A dead-ball foul on the touchdown, assessed on the kickoff gave Clewiston excellent eld position to start their next drive. The Tigers would start with the ball at the LaBelle 40yard line, with just over two minutes to play in the game. The Bronco defense stepped up, and forced a turnover on downs to seal the victory as the offense was able to run out the clock. The Broncos have one game left, against these very same Tigers, this upcoming Thursday afternoon at ve o’clock, in Clewiston. With this week’s win, the Broncos have set the school record for most wins in a season. Come out and cheer on the players as the y chase the goal of an undefeated season at Cane Field in Clewiston this week. Let’s ll the stands and support our Broncos, Bronco Nation! The students had to show their identi cation, sign the ballots, go into the voting booths and deposit their ballots in actual voting boxes. This was a terri c experience for our students to familiarize themselves with the entire process. The Social Studies classes have been covering the current events portion of the campaign season. Recently, Joe Thomas, Democratic Chairman, and Mel Karau, Republican Chairman, came and spoke in three sessions to the entire student body. Results of the vote are being tabulated and will be released after the "real" election. Most of us who use a Windows based computer for work or play are familiar w ith using the mouse for just about everything but typing. This Computer Corner article will show you some things you can do w ith the keyboard that you may not know about. These are called keyboard shortcuts and they’re designed to save time and effort w hen using your computer. The rst one every computer user should know about is a simple one. Help. To get the help application to launch, tap the F1 key. Many of these shortcuts are two key combinations, which means you press the rst key and hold it while you tap the second key. A great and seldom used example is this shortcut to ‘ nd’ something in a document. CNTRL-F this simply means hold the control key (labeled CNTRL) and tap the F key. In a w eb browser, you’ll see a little box appear. Type the word or phrase you’re looking for in that box and it will be highlighted. That trick also works in a word processor like Microsoft Word or Open (or Libre) Of ce W riter. In fact, there are a LOT of applications which use CNTRL-F to help you nd things, including the notepad.exe application in Windows. Here are a few others that we nd to be v ery useful: CTRL+ESC: Open Start menu (same as clicking ‘Start’) ALT+TAB: Switch between open programs ALT+F4: Quit a program SHIFT+DELETE: Delete an item, bypassing the Recycle Bin Another good one for Windows users is the key combination that will minimize all open windows and show the desktop. For this, hold down the ‘Windows’ key (the key w ith the windows ag icon on it) and press the letter D. Instantly, the desktop appears. Still another good combo to remember is the ‘Windows Explorer’ key combo. That’s W indows key plus E. Then there’s the ‘lock the computer’ key combination. That one is Windows plus L For those of us who think our computer is mostly useless without a mouse, these keystrokes and combinations are good to know. If you have any questions, send them to computercorner@cprtools.net. Who knows? Your question may be answered in the Caloosa-Belle!
