Thursday, August 23, 2012 50¢ Plus tax V ol. 89 No. 34 by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle The city has received additional funding from USDA to complete its planned state-of-the-art reverse osmosis water plant. Tim Taylor USDA got the additional funding: $2.9 in low interest loan and $2.1 million in grant money. The city can now nally award the contracts to get construction going. The information came out at the city's August 9 regular commission meeting.Sewer connectionsAn issue has also arisen concerning the city's sewer hook up fees. Residents are required to connect to the city's sewer system where they can. The hook up fees may be paid immediately, in installments and even spread out over 20 years. There are several property owners who have refused to hook up to the sewer. In those cases the city sends them a monthly bill for the hook up charge. The problem arose when a tenant found he had been paying the fee but the property his landlord has never been connected the property to the sewer system. The renter has been reimbursed for the payments, since the owner Water plant funding complete by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle School is back in session, fall isn't far behind. Selected by Auxiliary members were Brennah McVey and Suzanna Talada, both juniors at LaBelle High School, to attend the Girls State Session in Talahassee on the FSU Campus June 15-23. To be eligible, a student must have completed the 11th grade by the end of the last school year and be returning for her senior year. While at Girls State and during a week-long study of government, Brennah was elected Councilwoman of her city and ran for County Representative. Suzanna was elected to the House of Representatives. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 130, along with the American Legion Riders Florida Chapter 130 of LaBelle, sponsored both girls. The Relay For Life of LaBelle is changing, and it will be a change for the better; as the American Cancer Society will now be coordinating the event from the Lee County of ce in Fort Myers. I am excited to introduce myself as the new staff partner working with the event. My name is Moe Taylor. As a six-year cancer survivor myself, I look forward to working hard at building on the past successes of the Relay For Life of LaBelle, and re-engaging the volunteers who so passionately ght for an end to cancer. It is estimated that each year, over 7,000 people in our area are diagnosed with cancer. The American Cancer Society is where patients and their families can turn to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for support. The services that we provide and the research done towards a cure are funded by the hard work of our volunteers. The city could force the connection, but is concerned about going onto private property to do it. Eventually, every property will be connected to the sewer because the septic tank will at some point need service, which must be approved by the health department. That service will not be approved if sewer is available. The board discussed an amnesty period for payment of the connection fee. NoiseResident Julie Wilkins brought an issue to the fore that the city has been grappling with for years. Noise generated from parties and dances at the LaBelle Civic Center has long disrupted the neighborhood and the city has been trying to nd a reasonable and effective way to hold the noise level down. The bass is actually the problem, not so much loud music, because it travels much further. Although renters are required to supply security at events, noise continues to be an issue, even rattling windows in the neighborhood at times. Children playing outside the building is also a problem at times. Suggestions were to add a check list to the lease form explaining that the renter is required to hold the bass down or forfeit the down payment; shutting down the party if it is not in compliance; Mayor Paul Puletti said the deputies also need to be educated regarding the noise ordinance and acceptable levels. He felt the city's ordinance does have teeth in it but is not being properly enforced. The commission asked staff to look into it and come back with recommendations. There have been no replacement vehicles in two years. They will be replacing sixand seven-year old cars that have reached the end of their useful life,” said Sheriff Steve Whidden. “We are glad we were able to do business with Langford Ford and appreciate their service.” Mr. Langford stated, “It is an honor and privilege to provide these Police Interceptors to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce. Also, as a Hendry County tax payer, we are grateful that our Sheriff’s Of ce has purchased them from our business here in Hendry County.” The Blood Mobile will be at the Hendry County Health Department at 1140 Pratt Blvd, LaBelle on Tuesday, September 18, from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Every three seconds someone, somew here, needs a blood transfusion. You just have to go through a short registration process, answer a few medical questions to make sure that you are healthy enough to donate. The process of donating blood is fast. It should only take about 5-10 minutes to donate, and the whole process shouldn't take any longer than 30 minutes. To donate blood, you must be in good health, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. You must be 17 years old or older. Please note: 16 year olds can donate with a parent's consent. Why you may not be able to donate If you have a cold or the u or if you have a sore throat you will not be eligible to donate blood. If you are being treated for an illness or have had recent dental surgery you may not be able to donate. However, there are several medications that you can take and still be allowed to donate blood. (Such as aspirin, Tylenol, blood pressure medications) Be sure to eat well at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of uids. You may donate whole blood once every 56 days, which allows plenty of time for your red cells to be replenished. Please note: There is no risk of contracting HIV/AIDS or any other disease through the blood donation process. Each collection kit is sterile, pre-packaged and used only once. Please consider giving the gift of life; donate blood! We hope to see you on September 18th! New Employ Floridaby Matt KindermannIn the last week there have been many exciting new upgrades to the State’s employment Web site, www.employ orida. com. This Web site is for both job seekers and employers. It is where those looking for a job can hope to nd open positions, and it is where those who are looking to hire a quali ed individual can hope to nd that one resume that shines brighter than the rest. As before, there are no commitments or fees, just simply a service offered by the State to help grease the workforce rails. First, for the job seeker, you can now conduct a basic job search right from the home page without having to log in with a user name or password. However, to apply for positions you nd, you will have to log in before you will be allowed to apply. For the employer, you will still be able to conduct a quick resume search by clicking on one of the several “Find a Candidate” buttons. Employers can also access the State’s employer laws and regulations library through links for the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), Workforce Florida Inc., and Enterprise Florida Inc. Visitors to Employ Florida can “Like” the page on Facebook, or follow on Twitter, which will provide daily updates to regional events and news, such as job fairs, job openings and tips. For those customers with an existing user name and password, you can use the old one, but the system will prompt you to change it after you log on for the rst time. Other good news includes the ability to change your user name for the rst time. So, if you have been stuck with the user name WILLWORKFORPAY1234, you can now change it to something that employers might actually look at! If any users need assistance with the system, contact your local workforce ofce and the staff can walk you through the process. Southwest Florida Works is the regional state workforce board for Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. For job search assistance or employer support, speak with an employment representative nearest you by going to www. sw works.org and click on “Locations.” by Les MorganI’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Opportunity only knocks once.” The good news is: it knocks more than once, but we need to recognize a good opportunity when it comes our way. Failure to take full advantage of openings when the timing is right will lead to regret. The Irish Potato Famine (1846-1851) resulted in a 30 percent drop in the population of the west of Ireland. The prolonged suffering of the Irish peasantry had broken the survivors in body and spirit. John Bloom eld, the owner of Castle Caldwell in County Fermanagh, was working on the recovery of his estate when he noticed that the exteriors of his tenant farmers’ small cottages had a vivid white nish. He was informed that there was a clay deposit on his property of unusually ne quality. To generate revenue and provide employment on his estate, he built a pottery at the village of Belleek in 1857. The unusually ne clay yielded a porcelain china that was translucent with a glass-like nish. It was worked into traditional Irish designs and was an immediate success. Today, Belleek’s delicate strength and its iridescent pearlized glaze is enthusiastically purchased the world over. This multimilliondollar industry arose from innovative thinking during some very anxious times. In the Bible one of the Greek words translated for opportunity is “kairos.” It literally refers to a xed and de nite period of time. Solomon in Ecclesiastes teaches us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven” (Ecc 3:1). We talk about a “window of opportunity.” The Bible records the stories of missed opportunities. We can miss the opportunity for victory. Elisha told King Jehoash to strike the arrows against the ground as many times as he wanted to show the extent of his victory in battle (2 Kgs 13:19). He only struck the ground three times, and when he took that action, he did so with very little passion. “The man of God was angry with him and said, ‘You should have struck the ground ve or six times, then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.’” We can miss the opportunity for salvation. We read the sad words of Jeremiah 8:20, “The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved.” When a person hears the good news of Jesus, he or she should respond then at that moment and not delay. We can miss the opportunity for service. In Matthew 25:44, we read of those who failed to help those in need. In this passage Jesus himself gives a reply of those who, after a living a life dedicated to honor God, will one day reply to Him: “’Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’” We can miss the opportunity for prayer. When Jesus prayed alone in Gethsemane to prepare himself for the cross, “Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping, ‘Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?’.” (Matt 26:40). Can you imagine how the hollow words rang in the minds of those men for years after hearing them? I doubt that verbal rebuke ever left their memories. We can miss the opportunity of God’s work in our lives. In Luke 19:41-42, 44 we read of Jesus: “As he approached Jerusalem, and saw the city, he wept over it and said, ‘I f you, even you, had only known on this da y what would bring you peace -but now it is hidden from your eyes ... You did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you’.” “We missed him. Our chance to change things came and passed and we did not kno w it was there.” These sad words were spoken of a dark-skinned little boy sat through Sunday School classes for three years at a great Baptist Church (First Church, San Antonio). However, some one missed him. His name was Sirhan Sirhan, and at age 24 he shot and killed Senator Robert Kennedy. In a welter o f words and the shudder of grief throughout our nation, the persistent thought keeps recurring ... someone missed him. What opportunities are before you right now? Are you ready to make the proper decision? Have you done your research and made preparations? When opportunity comes our way, especially when God is at work, may we see it and seize it with all the power and passion we have so that we never have to regret missing a great opportunity. Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located on Highway 80 across from City Hall. Christians: Are you open to an opportunity? Matt Kindermann Les Morgan LMS looking forwardLaBelle Middle School would like to than k all the parents and students who came out for the open house on August 16. Church Briefs All U.S. baby boomers should get a onetime test for the hepatitis C virus, according to nal recommendations published today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prev ention. One in 30 baby boomers – the generation born from 1945 through 1965 – has been infected with hepatitis C, and most don’t know it. Hepatitis C causes serious liver diseases, including liver cancer (the fastestrising cause of cancer-related deaths) and is the leading cause of liver transplants in the United States. The nal recommendations are published in today’s issue of CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Draft recommendations were issued in May, followed by a public comment period. “A one-time blood test for hepatitis C should be on every baby boomer’s medical checklist,” said CDC Director Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “The new recommendations can protect the health of an entire generation of Americans and save thousands of lives.” CDC’s previous recommendations called for testing only individuals with certain known risk factors for hepatitis C infection. Risk-based screening will continue to be important, but is not suf cient alone. More than 2 million U.S. baby boomers are infected with hepatitis C – accounting for more than 75 percent of all American adults living with the virus. Studies show that many baby boomers were infected with the virus decades ago, do not perceive themselves to be at risk, and have never been screened. More than 15,000 Americans, most of them baby boomers, die each year from hepatitis C-related illness, such as cirrhosis and liver cancer, and deaths have been increasing steadily for over a decade and are projected to grow signi cantly in coming years. CDC estimates one-time hepatitis C testing of baby boomers could identify more than 800,000 additional people with hepatitis C. And with newly available therapies that can cure up to 75 percent of infections, expanded testing – along with linkage to appropriate care and treatment – would prevent the costly consequences of liver cancer and other chronic liver diseases and save more than 120,000 lives. Comments received from individuals and organizations during the public comment period (May 22-June 8, 2012) overwhelmingly supported CDC’s original proposal. As a result, the agency did not make substantive changes to the draft recommendations. For additional information about hepatitis, visit www.cdc.gov/hepatitis. CDC: All Baby Boomers should receive one-time Hepatitis C test New approach will help avert major increases in liver disease and deaths in the U.S.

There’s no denying that we’ve become a technology-dependent society. Think about how stressful it is or how upset you get when your computer has problems and keeps you from using it the way y ou want or need to. What do you do when y our important data is not accessible? Simple. Restore from your most recent backup. W hat? No backup? Shame on you. It’s not hard to do and will de nitely save you some stress if the inevitable computer failure happens. Step one: Determine what your ‘important data’ is; this way we can determine w hat should be backed up. ‘Important data’ can be spreadsheets, nancial information, datebooks, pictures...it all depends on what is important to you. If you’re like most people, you keep your data les and folders in their ‘default’ locations, which makes copying them to a backup location very simple. For users of Windows XP, there’s a folder called ‘My Documents’; Windows Vista and W indows 7 users will nd a folder or library called ‘Documents.’ Unless you’ve made it a point to save your les in an alternate location, most of what will be considered ‘important’ for many users will be within these locations. Now that we’ve determined what should be backed up, we need to determine w here to put the backup copies. Step two: Saving the ‘important data’ someplace safe. Storing backup copies of les has truly never been easier. In the days before external storage devices like USB thumb (or ash) drives, backing up was far more dif cult. These days it is really as simple as inserting your USB thumb drive and dragging your ‘My Documents’ or ‘Documents’ folder to the USB drive’s icon or folder. USB thumb drives are available in many sizes and from many manufacturers. You can pick them up at places like your local pharmacy, grocery store or computer store. They’re literally everywhere. What size y ou’ll need will depend on how much data y ou need or want to back up. Windows users can determine their speci c size requirements simply by right-clicking on the folder to be backed up and selecting ‘Properties’ from the menu. After a few seconds, Windows will tell y ou the ‘Size on Disk’ in MB (megabytes). A good rule of thumb is to obtain a backup device that is twice the capacity of your immediate need, so if your ‘Documents’ folder is 180MB, anything over 360MB will do the trick nicely. Step three: Don’t forget to do it regularly. Think of backing up your data as your insurance policy. The frequency of your backups can be thought of as your deductible. How much of a deductible can you afford? If you only backup your data once per month, you might have to restore one-month old data in the case of a computer failure. If that’s not acceptable, consider performing backups more frequently. Step four: Storage of your backup data. Y ou’ve backed up your important les, now be sure to keep the storage media in a safe and secure place. A good practice is to ensure that the media is not connected fulltime to your computer; this helps prevent data loss or corruption in the event of virus or malware infection. Home or Business? The information about locations for ‘important data’ provided here is based on typical home computer use. Business users will need to ensure that data crucial to their business is backed up at regular intervals. Business without in-house IT support who are interested in setting up a comprehensive backup plan should contact a quali ed consultant to assist in this vital process. Members of the North LaBelle Volunteers in Public Safety hosted an Ice Cream Social on August 7, 2012, to bring about awareness to National Night Out, a nationwide crime prevention event organized by the National Association of Town Watch. It is reported more than 37 million Americans from 15,000 communities in all 50 states participated in this event last year. Members of the North LaBelle Community, as well as several area citizens and local politicians, came out to Shell Lane for the event. Desserts were sweet and ice cream, delicious. There was fun for everyone. Kids enjoyed bubbles, played games in the grass and colored pages. There was music, dancing, friendships and community partnerships developed. “To encourage our communities to get out and know their neighborhood, and as a law enforcement agency, to be involved in that is essential to strengthen positive community relationships,” said Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden. “To work in one accord is my continued goal as your Sheriff.” V arsityAug. 24: Immokalee, A, 7:30 Aug. 31: Caradinal Mooney, H, 7:30 Sept. 7: Evangelical Christian, A, 7:30 Sept. 14: Lemon Bay, H, 7:30 Sept. 21: Avon Park, District, A, 7:30 Sept. 28: Dunbar, District, H, 7:30 Oct. 5: Gateway Charter, H, 7:30 Oct. 12: Booker, District, A, 7:30 Oct. 26: Lake Placid, District, H, 7:30 Nov. 2: Clewiston, A, 7:30 Nov. 9: Moore Haven, A, 7:30Junior VarsityAug. 29: Cardinal Mooney, A, 6:00 Sept. 6: Clewiston, H, 7:00 Sept. 13: Evangelical Christian, A, 6:00 Sept. 20: Port Charlotte, A, 6:00 Sept. 27: Lemon Bay, A, 6:00 Oct. 4: Moore Haven, H, 6:00 Oct. 11: Clewiston, A, 7:00 Oct. 18: Avon Park, H, 7:00 Cowboy Football Schedule

Believe it or not, exercise can save your life. The Big Iron Barbell is a perfect example. The gym opened in 2004 and has become a haven for people interested in exercise for a variety of reasons. All the staff at Big Iron Barbell are on a mission to share their own understanding of how to be healthy, but personal trainer Carlene Campbell is the best known. You may recall that Carlene won second place in the Masters over 40 gure classi cation at the Royal Palm Classic Body Building and Figure Competition and also came home w ith a rst place from the South Florida Fitness and Figure Championship for women over 50. Both contests were in 2009 At 54, Carlene is the perfect poster child for health and tness not only strong, but glowing with good health. Carlene laughs when she says she started out exercising with three-pound pink dumbbells. Even so, she could soon see the change she could make in her own body and it was exciting. The boost of self con dence pushed her to continue. She also found that she enjoys helping others who have no con dence in their abilities. She understands that everyone is at different stages of life but everyone can improve their physical and mental well being w ith exercise. Professionally, Carlene began as a student at Darla's Dance and Exercise and eventually began to teach some classes there. Since then Carlene has worked at other gyms in the area and has become a certi ed A erobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) as a personal trainer (group) and w ith FiTOUR as a tness instructor. She is also a certi ed pilates instructor. When Carlene lost her son, John, in a car crash, she walked away from training. Her intense personal anguish pushed almost everything else out of her life. She is quick to say that her family, including her Big Iron family, kept her going. She said she had lost all desire to live life. She couldn't read or even think. She took a y ear off from the gym and just deteriorated ended up down to 93 pounds. But the gym "stood behind me," she said. "Tara was the rst one to me when I lost my son." She said the gym let her take all the time off she needed until one day she nally started to come in and just sit. It was good therapy. She began to work out with her husband, trying to get her body and mind back in sync but, as she put it, "I couldn't keep my mouth shut" and had to help others she saw struggling. Back in the gym, she felt couldn't not help people. It was such a step for her. It turned out to be the best therapy she could have gotten. Then somebody asked her to train them and before long she had found her way back. Now she's working as a trainer again, better than ever. "I just needed somebody to push me," she said. "Now I appreciate having the time to focus on clients," she added. In fact, Carlene feels her strongest point is empathy she says she has the ability to read people and "be what they need." Carlene said she'd love to get back into competition again, but training hard is also tough on the family. She'd also like to be more knowledgeable and certi ed in nutrition. Right now she can only suggest to her clients nutritional methods that have worked for her. Carlene has many successes. Shirley English is living proof of the difference regular exercise can make in your life. Retired and disabled, Shirley said she just sat around for ten years. At 288 pounds, she knew she had to do something about her weight and made one of the best decisions of her life to begin exercising. You can nd Shirley, down to 226 pounds, You will nd Shirley at the Big Iron Barbell almost every day, working up a good sweat, and grateful for the second chance. "I was fortunate," Shirley said, "Exercise saved my life." Now 59 years old, Shirley uses a variety of the machines at the gym, but she nds the most challenging are the elliptical and stationary bike. Not only is Shirley smiling more these days, with more energy and a better outlook on life, her doctor is happy with her, too, because she's losing weight and doing it the right way. She said at the Big Iron Barbell she can get the counseling she needs in a very friendly and helpful environment. "I was scared to come in at rst, but it's a good place," Shirley explains. Frieda Stark is 86 years old. She spent nine years at another exercise gym and has been at Big Iron Barbell for about a year. An acrobat and cheerleader in her youth, she even taught her daughter acrobatics. After a car accident years ago, exercise helped her come back from the trauma. "It does work," she insists. "I need to do it for my health." Teresa McKenzie is a young woman who has worked her way back from a spinal cord injury doctors said would keep her paralyzed for life. She had worked out before she suffered the beating that severed her spinal cord. Now, her goal is to rebuild her muscles to continue to be able just to walk. "I need to stay strong to be healthy," she said. That's what the folks at Big Iron Barbell are helping her to do. "I like it because it's small . your questions get answered. It's a friendly family environment." She adds, "Health is everything." It relieves the pain when she works out, she noted. Some think they need to lose weight rst, then come to the gym. Not so. You just need to work at it. Carlene is a motivator, ready to work with all levels and ages. It doesn't matter how or when you get started. What matters is that you're committed to your own health and willing to stick to the type of training that will ful ll your goal. The rst step is that you must want to do it for yourself, Carlene said. "Come talk to any of us, get your feet wet, get the feel of it." You don't know how far you can go until you get started. Carlene is part of a team of caring exercise enthusiasts. Tara Kelly and Amy Holt, are owners. Elaine Anderson is the gym manager. Carlene said Elaine's compassion for others is her most important trait. The Big Iron Barbell is located at 283 S. Bridge Street. It's open Monday through Friday 5 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m.-1 p.m. You can call 674-1122. 9 Caloosa Belle A ugust 23, 2012 Getting t with Carlene at the Big Iron Barbell Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantFrieda Stark with trainer Carlene Campbell.

Citrus growers are still worried about greening and prices, but also saw some reason for optimism at the 2012 Citrus Expo w hich occurred in North Fort Myers on W ednesday and Thursday, August 15 and 16. “In the past two years, more growers began replanting their citrus trees after greening caused years of industry-wide hesitancy,” said Fritz Roka, associate professor of agricultural economics at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center. “Greening is a bacterial disease that weakens and eventually kills citrus trees by zapping certain nutrients,” said Ron Hamel, executive vice president of Gulf Citrus Growers Association. It is spread by a bug called the Asian citrus psyllid. “There’s optimism in the industry because the industry collectively has put a lot of money into research,” Hamel said. Tris Chapman, veteran citrus industry executive and current Chairman of the Hendry County Commission, was the emcee for the Expo banquet on Wednesday night. Between introducing the speakers, Chapman kept the crowd entertained with quips and anecdotes about the industry. The dinner, which was held at Harborside Event Center in downtown Fort Myers, featured U.S. Congressman Tom Rooney’s keynote address. Congressman Rooney, who is on the House Agriculture Committee, discussed renewing the farm bill that expires in September. The program, he said, provides a safet y net for farmers, like crop insurance and research money for citrus diseases. “If we don’t come up with a solution for greening and canker, we won’t be able to keep up with our competitors,” he said. Despite or maybe because of all of the concerns facing the industry, over 2,000 people visited the Expo’s exhibits and seminars on Wednesday and Thursday.
