Thursday, August 16, 2012 50¢ Plus tax V ol. 89 No. 33 “If elected one of the things I would do for the Citizens of Hendry County as Sheriff would be to implement EMD. I hav e arranged with Hendry County Emergenc y Services to implement training of Hendr y County Dispatchers and certify them as Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD)”. (2008) As of June 1, 2012, all Hendry Count y Communications Operators have been certi ed as Emergency Medical Dispatchers. All Dispatchers have undergone 32 hours of required training and have also completed a four hour ride along with First Responders. All Dispatchers are CP R Certi ed and must be recerti ed ever y two years. While this has been a long and dif cul t task, Dr. Han Louis-Charles, MD of Hendry Regional Medical Hospital reviewed and approved the Association of Publi c Safety Communications Of cials (APCO) medical guide cards on April 2011. Hendry County Senior Dispatche r Tonya Jennings completed the APCO EMD training and became an instructor. Tonya, along with Hendry County Publi c Safety Operations Chief Donna Akin, coinstructed the 32 hour in-house training to the remaining Hendy County Communications Operators. In addition, Hendry County Communications Supervisor Margie Phipps has required that all dispatchers complete a four-hour ride along with First Responders, Through the APCO Institute, the Emergency Medical Dispatch Program is based on the National Highway Traf c Safet y Administration’s (NHTSA) National Standards Curriculum for EMD. Emergency Dispatch is a systematic program of handling medical calls for assistance. Trained Communication Operators, using locally-approved EMD Guide cards, can quickly and properly determine the nature and priority of the call; dispatch the appropriate response; and provide the caller instructions to help treat the patient until the responding EMS unit arrives if necessary. What this means for Hendry County’s citizens and its visitorsWhen you call 9-1-1 have you ever wondered "What's with all the questions?! All I want is to get this patient to the hospital for treatment as quickly as possible. I don't have time for all these questions." Emergency Communications Operators in Hendry County are now required to utilize EMD, a potentially life-saving system, for every medical call they receive. A re rescue truck or ambulance does not have to be the rst unit on the scene of a medical emergency; a dispatcher can be there within milliseconds, by telephone, providing medical information and pre-arrival instructions. That's the concept behind EMD. First, Emergency Dispatchers must assess the seriousness of the incoming request for medical service to determine the level of response, no response, non-emergency transport or emergency transport. The 9-1-1 Operator will ask a series of questions in order to determine what the medical situation is; if intervention is needed immediately; what resources may need to be dispatched such as re, police, EMS. If pre-arrival instructions are needed to be given to the caller, such as CPR, control of bleeding, child birth instructions, the 9-1-1 dispatcher, with the approved medical guide cards, can talk the caller through assisting the victim until medical units arrive. The second part of EMD consists of providing pre-arrival instructions to the caller, so they can immediately help the victim. The level of telephone assistance can vary from just simple advice (call your doctor), to complete instructions for CPR. This is the most visible component of EMD and, if you're the victim, perhaps the most valuable feature saving lives. Pre-arrival instructions are most commonly provided on medical ip cards, arranged so the dispatcher can question the caller and, based on the answers, quickly go to the card that contains the correct advice, instructions, etc. While you are talking with the 9-1-1 Operator, the 91-1 Operator is entering your information in to the system. Based on the nature of the call the communication operator sends, or dispatches, the appropriate help. In many instances a second Communication dispatcher is dispatching help based on the information shared by the primar y call taker while they are still on the phone with the caller. Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden said, "This is just one more way we are moving the Hendry County Sheriff's Of ce, to a more professional level." He continued, "Our dispatchers have worked very hard to get this program off the ground and to be successful. They are doing a great job and I am very proud of them." The program supported through a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, offers assistance to non-industrial private landowners who conduct herbicide treatments to control Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica), a non-native grass that is regulated as a state and federal noxious weed. "Cogongrass infestations increase the risk and severity of wild res, degrade the quality of forests and rangelands, and out-compete native vegetation," said Commissioner Adam Putnam. "Cogongrass is considered one of the worst weeds in the world, and an aggressive treatment approach is necessary to control it." The program is available in all 67 Florida counties. It offers reimbursement of 75 percent of the cost to treat Cogongrass infestations with herbicide for two consecutive years with a maximum of $100 per acre per year. Quali ed landowners may apply to treat up to 100 acres of infested area. All qualifying applications received during the submission period will be evaluated and ranked for approval. Consumer Servicesby Matt KindermannWhen entrepreneurs talk about their business plans, you usually do not hear concerns about small business insurance or Workers Compensation costs. Likewise, job seekers are more concerned with nding a job rather than dealing with an old health insurance claim. Fortunately, the State of Florida has a central division that caters to all of these considerations and more. It is the Division of Financial Services and their Web site is www.my oridacfo. co. This Web site is a virtual gold mine of information. Starting at the Finances and Economy section, Holocaust survivors can download forms to waive international wire transfer fees. Under the Citizen Resources tab, Senior Citizens can learn about common fraudulent practices targeting them such as reverse mortgage and annuity sales. You can also report insurance fraud or a commercial scam through a link or by calling the Consumer Helpline at 1-877693-5236. Most importantly for employees and employers, the Business and Professional section will take you to the Consumer Services Division. Consumer Services allows you to search insurance providers to determine if they are themselves insured, are licensed or have recently settled a lawsuit. It would nice to know that your insurance agent is recognized by the State before doing business! There are guides to le a civil remedy concerning legal actions against insurers, as well as an Insurance Market that lists contact information and comparisons to the different Health, Commercial and Residential insurance agents authorized to operate in Florida. The On-Demand library also offers multi-media presentations on everything from small business disaster preparation to residential sinkhole coverage.Southwest Florida Works is the regional state workforce board for Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. Most teenagers can hardly wait to start driving but most parents tend to have mixed feelings. Getting teens to fully understand safety messages about driving can be a dif cult challenge for parents. Some parents may feel relieved that they don't have to always be the chauffer, but at the same time, parents worry about their teen's safety. Parents need to "practice what they preach." Teens are more likely to wear a seatbelt, follow the rules of the road and be a calm and courteous driver if they see their parents doing the same. Teens need to remember that driving is a privilege, not a right, and not all teens are ready to drive even when the law says they can. Just because a teen has a permit, doesn't mean they are ready for every driving condition. Most crashes involving teen drivers include one of the following factors: Distracted Driving Which includes: o Texting o Talking on cell phone o Eating Reckless Driving Which includes: o Speeding o Tailgating Driving with teen passengers Not using seatbelts Driver Inexperience and weather conditions Nighttime driving Impaired Driving Don't drive while under the in uence of medication, alcohol or drugs. Teen Driving Data Car crashes are the leading cause o f death for teens in the United States, taking the lives of eight teens a day. In the last decade, over 68,000 teens have died in car crashes. Sixty- ve percent of teen passenger deaths occur when another teenager is driving. The best thing a parent can do is to start teaching children at a young age about safe driving and then once the teen has a permit, let them practice-practice-practice! Ultimately, the teen will have to make decisions about their driving habits, but it's up to parents to be role models and enforce rules to encourage safe driving. Ask your insurance agent or the local department of motor vehicles for more information on teen driving. You can also visit the National Highway Traf c Safety Administration website at http://www.nhtsa.gov/TeenDrivers/ or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website http://www.cdc. gov/Motorvehiclesafety/Teen_Drivers/teendrivers_factsheet.html Remember to buckle up! Teen driving, it’s a privilege not a right Matt Kindermann Patricia Dobbins By Pat DobbinsIt's summertime! Baseball games, swimming, camping, hiking or just playing outdoors. These are all great summer activities, but don't forget about ticks that may be in the same environment. There are several things you can do to help prevent tick bites and reduce your risk of tick-borne disease. After being in wooded areas, grassy areas or even after a summer picnic, you should check your scalp and hair, behind the ears, the neck and under the arms. Usually ticks try to nd a nice warm spot to hide and latch onto to your skin, but sometimes they can choose the strangest places, so please check your whole body thoroughly. Some ticks are small enough to crawl into shoes or through socks, so when you are hiking or taking a stroll through wooded areas, tuck your pant legs into your socks so that they cannot crawl up the inside of your pants. Also, it's a good idea to wear light-colored clothing, because it will help you spot any ticks that may be crawling around looking for a place to bite! For added protection, you can also use an insect repellent with DEET, but please always follow the product instructions! Repellents containing 20 percent or more DEET can be applied to the skin, and can provide some protection for several hours. Please talk to your healthcare provider before applying any insect repellents on young children. Before you go into your home, chec k your clothing and your pets for ticks. Ticks may be carried into the house on clothing and pets and any ticks that are found should be removed immediately. Watch for signs of illness such as rash or fever, and see a health care provider if these develop. Remember that it can take up to 30 days before you have symptoms of a tick related disease. Your risk of getting a tick-borne illness depends on many factors, including where you live, what type of tick bit you and ho w long the tick was attached. If you become ill after a tick bite, please see your health care provider. You can get more information about ticks at this Web site: http://www.cdc.gov/ticks/ Ticks can be in your back yard!

by Bianca RossDrug Free Hendry County Hendry County Youth are going back to school next week! We wish them, their parents, and teachers the best during this new and very busy season. Some students will be going to completely new schools and all w ill be meeting new friends. We encourage parents to use this “fresh start” as an opportunity to talk to their children about drugs and alcohol. Talking with your children about drug and alcohol abuse isn’t easy, but having a solid plan will deliver your message with more impact. News 2 has compiled resources from experts on the best way to speak with children of any age about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Talking with preschool and grade school age children. Take a lesson from parenting expert, Jen Singer, when your preschooler or grade school age child sees an adult smoking. Here’s what to say, “Grown ups can make their own decisions and sometimes those decisions aren’t the best for their bodies. Sometimes, when someone starts smoking, his or her body feels like it has to have cigarettes-even though it’s not healthy. And that makes it harder for him or her to quit.” Talking with your high school teenager. If your teen is starting high school their chances of exposure to drugs and alcohol increases. Here’s how you can help prepare them for risky situations, “You must be so excited about starting high school... it’s going to be a ton of fun, and we want you to have a great time. But we also know there’s going to be some pressure to start drinking, smoking pot or taking other drugs. A lot of people feel like this is just what high school kids do. But not all high school kids drink! Many don’t, which means it won’t make you w eird to choose not to drink, either. You can still have a lot of fun if you don’t drink. You’ll have a lot of decisions to make about what you want to do in high school and you might even make some mistakes. Just know that you can talk to us about anything even if you DO make a mistake. We won’t freak out. We want you to count on us to help you make smart decisions and stay safe, okay?” Talking with young adults. Young adults 18-25 are at an age where they can make decisions on their own, but even though they may be legally allowed to drink alcohol or smoke tobacco, they can also use some positive encouragement to be safe. When your son or daughter is moving into an apartment or college dorm for the rst time, tell them, “I know you’re off to start your own life but please know that I’m always here for you. I respect that you’re old enough to make your own choices, but if you ever want another perspective on things, give a shout. I’ll try my hardest to help you out without judging you for your decisions. Sound good?” Amelia Arria, senior research scientist at the Treatment Research Institute, also suggests, “There are certain things that you can count on in life and one of the things you’re going to be able to count on is me. As your parent, I am always here for you. Remember, I am your support. I’m the one who can guide you.” Timetotalk.org has more scenarios and other great advice in their “Talk Kit” including: Five Teachable Moments, How To Teach Kids To Turn Down Drugs, Answering the Question “Did You Do Drugs?”, How Other Adults Can Help. You can download the kit at timetotalk.org. Coalition Recognizes Local Pharmacy Over the last 2 years K&M Drugs and J&J Family Pharmacy have been generous partners of Drug Free Hendry County. Ayman and Haitham Kaki were both willing to help in any way they could when contacted by coalition staff about a possible partnership. It just so happened that during this same time the prescription drug epidemic was reaching its peak and Ayman, owner of J&J Pharmacy, was available right away to educate staff about prescription drugs and has continued to provide education on E-FORCSE, the state’s prescription drug monitoring program, as well as updates on new prescription drug regulations. Haitham has donated his time as a guest speaker during two Lunch and Learns, one in LaBelle and one in Clewiston. Thanks to Haitham, coalition staff spoke to The Rotary Club of Clewiston about proper drug disposal and current Hendry County statistics. The Kaki brothers have hosted several “Operation Medicine Cabinets” at their stores where they provided food and drinks for everyone that came in. They have also attended social norms activities at county high schools and talked to the kids about making good choices. Both stores also participate in our “Be the Wall” Campaigns. Most recently all pharmacy staff wore our shirts every Friday for a month during Prom/Graduation season. The coalition will be forever grateful for their contributions of time, knowledge, and resources and we look forward to continuing to partner together in creating a safer community. Personal Note: Both of these men gre w up in Clewiston. They love their communit y and care deeply for its youth and its future. I am glad to have met them both and am extremely proud of our friendship. 8 Caloosa Belle August 16, 2012 Mandataory meeting for third grade parentsLaBelle Elementary School will hold a mandatory meeting for parents of students in the third grade welcome back meeting tonight Thursday, August 16, at 5 p .m. in the school’s media center. parents of third graders will receive important information. With the fall sports practice season about to begin, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) today reminded schools of new standards that have been put in place to safeguard the health and well-being of student-athletes. The FHSAA’s director of athletics will conduct a workshop on the new safety requirements at a compliance seminar next week. Pre-season practices of cially begin Monday (August 6) for student-athletes competing for their schools in football, golf, swimming/ diving and girls volleyball, and new procedures are in place to protect the youths from the heat, inadequate hydration and concussions. Cross country and bowling practices begin one week later. “For coaches, parents and everyone else associated with high school athletics, nothing is more important than the safety of the students,” said FHSAA Executive Director Dr. Roger Dearing. “At the FHSAA, we are committed to making sure our members understand what they must do to ensure that competitors have safe, enjoyable experiences as high school athletes.” The FHSAA’s Board of Directors adopted new heat-related policies in June, designed to ensure that young athletes drink plenty of water and do not practice too many hours each week. Under the new policies, schools must: Limit weekly practice time to 18 hours during the rst two weeks of practice, to allow student-athletes to adapt to conditions Ensure that for every 30 minutes of practice, student-athletes get a minimum veminute rest and hydration break Require unrestricted access to water for student-athletes at all times Require coaches and others in authority to never deny a student-athlete access to water if requested. The FHSAA also adopted a new concussion and heat-related illness form intended to create safety awareness among students and their caretakers by explaining the risks and symptoms associated with each problem. A concussion action plan developed by the FHSAA’s Sports Medicine Advisory Subcommittee and adopted by the Board requires that: Any student-athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion – such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems – must be immediate removed from the competition and cannot return to play until he or she is cleared by an appropriate health care professional. All head coaches and other paid coaches are required to view an online education course about concussions. The FHSAA also developed a new consent form related to concussions and heat-related illness to ensure that parents understand the conditions and the rules that apply to them. About the FHSAA Since it was established in 1920, the Florida High School Athletic Association has provided opportunities for high school students in Florida to participate fairly and equally in interscholastic athletic programs that produce vital educational bene ts. The FHSA A sponsors championship programs through which 108 teams and more than 720 studentathletes are crowned state champions in 30 sports each year. Through participation in these athletic programs, almost 800,000 students annually are extended opportunities to receive lessons in leadership, sportsmanship and citizenship. Altamonte Springs, Fl — A 17.7 foot Burmese python carrying 87 eggs is a record for Everglades National Park and a reminder that these problem snakes are here to stay. The Nature Conservancy has been working to prevent their spread out of the Everglades by training responders to pick them up when sighted. If you see a sun-bathing python or any other invasive species, like Nile monitors, take a photo and please call I-888-IveGot1 and report your sighting to the Python Patrol. “We have 24-hour response by law enforcement in 10 counties, although anyone in Florida can leave a message,” said Nature Conservancy Biologist Cheryl Millett, who runs the Conservancy’s Python Patrol program. The counties where a responder trained by the Conservancy to capture invasive snakes is dispatched are: Miami-Dade, Monroe, Collier, Hendry, Broward, Palm Beach, Glades, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties. The Nature Conservancy began the Python Patrol in 2008 to help prevent the spread of snakes out of Everglades National Park and into the Florida Keys where one had been discovered after feeding on an endangered Key Largo wood rat. People who work outside for a living were encouraged to call in sightings and trained responders up and down the Keys captured the intruders. Now the program is being implemented across the southern part of the state. Pythons eat a wide range of wildlife species, including birds, mammals and alligators up to 4 feet long. University of Florida scientists studying Florida’s largest snake found to date said its size would allow it to eat most anything. Capture of the record snake was announced by UF Monday. “By capturing snakes in the counties on the edges of the major infestation in the park we may be able to stop the spread and prevent new breeding. And by capturing them in the park we hope to suppress the population,” Millett said. Sightings can be led on-line at IveGot1. org as well. There is also an iPhone App available through iTunes called IveGot1 that was developed by the University of Georgia. The phone number and web site are open for reports of all invaders, including sh. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is partnering with the Conservancy to respond to reports. And wildlife of cers continue to be trained to properly capture and bag snakes. “We encourage everyone to become more familiar with distinguishing invasive from native reptiles by taking the free online REDDy training offered by the University of Florida,” Millett said. Online REDDy training is at http://ufwildlife.ifas.u .edu/reddy.shtml and offers a certi cate at end of the 40-minute free training, plus ID and reporting handouts. by Pudge LehmanFinished up my cataract surgery this week and #1 daughter drew the short straw and was on Mom Duty. Upon going in for the procedure the nurse said, “We’ll call you in an hour or so if you want to leave ... As Suzy bolted out the door she said... And I’m ALMOST sure I heard her right ... “ Can you just keep her for a few days and I’ll come back on Friday?” To which the nurse replied, “No, we can’t.” And I‘m ALMOST sure she said, “She’ll be sitting on the curb outside if you should choose to be late.” Was that all in my head? Maybe. When we get old, we are allowed to make up stories if we want. Buy the biggest jug of bleach you can and cut out a hole in the side, punch holes in the bottom ... when it’s empty, of course. Rinse well and let dry. Put your potatoes in it and when you need some just pick it up by the handle and plunk it down on the counter. Get one for your onions too ... Also good for trips to the beach to collect shells. Rinse shells and let drain. When painting pour paint in one. The handle makes it convenient ... Oh, yeah ... don’t poke holes in the bottom. Ran into Walter and Annie Ruth Howard this morning. It does my heart good to see some OLD TIMERS once in a while. We are dwindling as we speak. In our last column, we discussed using system tools like defrag and disk cleanup. This week, we’ll talk about ‘System Restore Points’ speci cally what they are and why and when you might want to use them. To understand this, let’s talk about that mysterious thing called the Windows “registry.” W hat is the registry? Wikipedia describes it pretty well: “The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that stores con guration settings and options on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It contains settings for low-level operating system components as well as the applications running on the platform.” So, what does this have to do with System Restore Points? Actually, it has everything to do with it. When you create a System Restore Point, you’re really creating a “snapshot” of registry. That being said, taking that “snapshot” at a time when your system is running well provides an opportunity to restore to that point when and if your system starts to “act up.”When should I create a system restore point?A good time to consider creating a system restore point is just *prior* to installing new software programs. Installation of software typically writes to the registry; if things are running well before you go to install a great new program you’ve purchased or downloaded, it makes sense to create a “snapshot.” That way, if the new program you install makes the system unstable or causes problems, you can ‘“go back” to that restore point in time and regain control o f your computer. As a precaution, some software actuall y does this automatically during its installation routine. Whether the restore point is created by the installation of software or performed manually by you, you can identify them b y their creation date which is part of the “restore point” name. To create a system restore point or to restore to a previously saved restore point, click “Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools” then select “System Restore.” IMPORTANT: The registry is a core component of every Windows system. Most users should not edit the registry directly without being aware that doing so may damage their operating system and possibly cause the system stop functioning.
