Thursday, June 21, 2012 50¢ Plus tax V ol. 89 No. 25 by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle The LaBelle City Commission continued wrangling with the problem of making up a $5 million de cit in funding for the city's new state-of-the-art reverse osmosis water plant. After years of planning, the cit y thought funding had been secured through USDA in the amount of a $10 million low interest loan plus a $5.2 million grant. However, bids on the project came in $5 million higher than funding. The city's original funding request would have been adequate but, at that time, RUS determined the city's request was over the actual cost, so the request was reduced by some $5 million. Bids on the project were spot on in th e city's original funding request. So, last month Applied Technology Management ATM, the city's engineering rm, began looking for elements that could be cu t from the project. Through "value engineering, ATM's Tim Taylor presented the they were able to par e costs from the project by parceling out ancillary work for the deep well injection and also on construction of electrical connections. Tim Taylor said sales tax can be reduced by direct purchase of equipment. At the June 14 meeting Andrew Burnham, senior vice president of Burton & Associates, presented a rate study update, which showed the new numbers should not creat e a major impact overall. After their presentation, Mayor Paul Puletti noted that if there are grant opportunities, it may not be "as scary" as the y thought. City applies for more grants for water plant Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantStanding for the agMembers of Boy Scout Troop 9 helped Legionnaires from Post 130 with the annual ag retirement ceremony on June 14, Flag Day. Thirteen-year-old Aaron Mace is a seventh grader at West Glades School. Tanner Hipple, also 13, is an eighth grader at West Glades School. Both are troop members who took part in the ceremony. It is the third year the troop has participated in the ag retirement ceremony. Legionnaires see this as great training for the younger generation training that includes their assistance in veterans' ceremonies at the Veteran's Park and Memorial Day when the Scouts help place ags at veterans' graves. Assistant Scout Master Scott Mace said the troop is grooming several Scouts for the top Eagle award and hopes several will one day be able to participate in the Legion's prestigious Boys State session. Aaron and Tanner agreed that the ag should be treated with respect because it "represents America" and stands for the freedom we all hold dear. Taylor was chosen at the Florida Democratic Party Convention held June 1-3 in Tampa where party representatives from all 67 counties gathered to select their 300-member national convention delegation. The Florida Democratic delegation is so large that only California will have more of the 5,500 delegates at the event. By contrast, while Florida is hosting the Republican Party convention, its delegation will be considerably smaller due to being penalized by the Republican National Party for jumping its primary too far ahead of other states. After a required special meeting scheduled for today, June 21, the city plans to apply for additional USDA funding.Street name changeDorothy Johnson presented a petition signed by residents of Fordson/Sunset Park requesting that Withlocootchee Ave. be renamed Selma Daniels Ave. in recognition of her many years of success in educating children in that community. Ms. Johnson explained that Ms. Daniels was the rst black teacher in LaBelle, coming here with her husband in 1920 and teaching several generations of children. Her husband is responsible for securing an area dedicated to LaBelle's black population in the early years. Residents and property owners along Withlocootchee Ave. have been noti ed of the recommendation and none have been opposed. Mayor Puletti explained that the old Daniels School was named for her but that structure, an old Sears building, is failing. Efforts to save it through grant monies have fallen short because no photos of the structure in its original state can be found to satisfy grant requirements. Renaming the street is one way to continue to honor her memory and her achievements, he said. "It's frustrating" that the building will probably eventually be lost. "The community still loves this woman and wants to remember her." The proposal to change the street name passed 5-0. General Election in November Peggy S. Hampton, Incumbent, LaBelle, Dem. COP Fun Day LaBelle High School Summer News Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantPets need to be safe tooSometimes Mary Bartoshuk is a clown, but she’s always got the best interests of her town at heart. That includes our four-legged friends. Seeing a televised story on a pet rescued from a re, she wondered if pets in Hendry County had access to the same kind of life-saving oxygen equipment. Finding that they did not, Mary started a campaign to raise funds to equip Hendry County ambulances with the special oxygen masks. The result is that a shipment of the masks recently came in and are now part of the standard equipment on all eight ambulances in the county. Here a tiny Min Pin puppy named Squirt helps demonstrate how the equipment works. There is a Pet Oxygen Recovery Mask for cats, one for small dogs and one for large dogs. A resident of the Caloosahatchee Humane Society, Squirt is too young to be adopted, but once she’s old enough to be spayed, get all her shots and so on, she’ll make somebody a ne companion and she’s a really good sport! Pictured from left: EMT Bob Daniels, Squirt, Paramedic Meghan Benedict and Mary Bartoshuk. Mary and Craig Bartoshuk would like to thank their supporters: Tony and Candy Alvarez, Rick and Sherrill Overberg, Tricia Boone, David and Linda Whidden, Sandra Perez, Paul and Carol Kraft, Sharon and John Schlitter, Julie and Tom Boardman, Pete and Florence Bartoshuk, Jayne Gourley, Kristina Kulpa, Marlene Carriker and Nancy Starkey, Sherri and Roger Denning; also Randy Bengston with EMS for his help. Mary said, “Hopefully these will be able to save the life of someone’s precious pet.” They would also like to equip the re department with pet oxygen masks. A kit of three large, medium and small costs $65.

Many today are falling apart at the seams. These w oes come from nancial struggles, emotional instability, concerns regarding our country, political uncertainties and family disharmony. Considering the pile of emotional baggage that many claim to be under, it is no wonder that every counselor in America has his or her schedule jammed, with an extensive "waiting list." Can anyone avoid the feeling of hardship? After all, struggles come in every shape and size, but hopelessness is something that we've all shared. For some the struggle is with themselves, with their emotions, self-con dence or depression. Others are bombarded and attacked by situations of the world. In desperation, people attempt to nd a cure to life's problems by doing things that they know are wrong. All of us at one point have tried to patch a hole in our life with a sin of some kind, like drugs, inappropriate relationships, lying or materialism. Most have been convinced to seek hope through medicine, relationships, ethics, philosophy, hobbies, education, etc. While these are options to pursue, none of them will bring true hope. Why is that? Simple. "Stuff" can never x life's problems. And, the worst part is that seeking "stuff" often leads to sin, which, unfortunately, only makes it worse. Sin is just a temporary x for a problem that really has only one solution. What are we do to with this seemingly insurmountable burden? Is there any hope for those who grapple with such heavy emotional freight? How can one select the right option to nd assistance and be able to cope with the vicissitudes so many are encountering? Yet, there is good news! No matter how dif cult our struggles, there is still hope. No matter how long we've fought to overcome our hardship, hope is here. The key to nding hope is to looking in the right place. Hope is found in the most popular book ever known to all of humankind. This volume has been translated into more languages than any other publication in history. It has served as the direction point for parliamentarians, presidents and the poor alike. Throughout the world it has been available for thousands of years. This publication can be purchased in hardback or soft cover, on CD, or in an MP3 format. Most people refer to this book the Bible. n Holy Scripture we nd assurance for life's issues because of Jesus. The writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews says that Jesus "sustains all things by his powerful word" (Heb 1:3). This means he holds the universe together. He has even numbered the hairs on our heads and knows when a sparrow falls to the ground (Matt 10:29-31). The word "sustain" in this passage means "to carry along." Jesus holds all things together by his powerful word. This means Jesus guides the universe along toward a goal. "All things" means the entire universe as a whole. Nothing is excluded from the Son of God's providence. What He does for the universe, He will do for us. He holds us together: spirit, mind and body. Jesus uni es all of life around one core value -faith in Him. When a person comes together, his whole world comes together. Christ gives life purpose. He is our peace the glue that holds us together. He holds families together when they live under His Lordship. He holds the church together when He remains the focal point of our worship and ministry. The early church had one creed: Jesus Christ is Lord. When people focus on Jesus, there is peace. The Bible also tells us this about Christ. The Lord your God is with you, he is might y to save (Zephaniah 3:17.) In Titus 1:2 we read, a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning o f time. Jeremiah 29:12 reminds us of this hope: For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 grants this assurance: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day b y day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we x our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. The reason Christ has the hope for all is because, though He was God, He has embraced humanity. He was rejected. He has tasted the sorrows we encounter daily. He was wounded and suffered unlike any other ever has through His cruci xion and horrible death. Yet, He lives again after His death and offers to anyone who is thirsty for meaning and genuine existence, both forgiveness and acceptance, as well as the reason for life. The Scripture is not a book about thinking happy thoughts or doing some kind o f "magic" through positive thinking. Rather, it communicates truth, even through the realities of adversity and hardship, and shows Biblical ways of dealing the most dif cult matters in this life. When we follow Jesus as Lord and make Him the center of our lives, everything comes together and is guided along toward God's plan.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located across the street from City Hall on Highway 80. Stress comes from everywhere; Hope comes from the Healer Job Trends 2012-2013by Matt KindermannPeriodically, the State of Florida releases labor statistics which can be accessed by anyone at www. oridajobs.org under Labor Market Information. The May 2012 Workforce Supply and Demand Report shows what occupations are saturated with labor, and which are in need of workers. This report is broken down by region, so it is easier to nd local gaps in labor supply than some Federal reports like those at www.careerinfonet.org. Last year at this time the fastest declining occupations in Florida belonged to the manufacturing, construction and postal industries. Current projections to 2018 still show manufacturing and postal occupations make up 6 out of the top 10 declining industries. Although construction declines have leveled off, it has not yet "come back" and 22 out of the top 25 fastest growing occupations in Florida are in the medical and social work industries. Not all education programs in these growing elds equally result in job placement because as the number of medical jobs in our area increase, the number of available entry-level dental, audiology and optometric jobs are decreasing. Jobs with the most vacancies in Southwest Florida include Registered Nurses, Medical Coding and Billing Managers, Cardiovascular Technicians, Diagnostic Sonographers, Social Workers with LCSW or LMHC certi cations, Physical Therapists and assistants, Occupational Therapists and assistants, and Speech Therapists. Most of these jobs require an associate's degree or higher. Other in-demand professions fall under STEM industries, this year's buzz word in education, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Nearly all college graduates under STEM are in demand, including Financial Advisors, Medical Technologists, Teachers of all disciplines except Special Education, Civil Engineers and Computer Programmers. I stress the word "Programmer" because it seems that every college-bound computer major dreams of developing web sites or writing video games. However, the good paying available computer jobs require software programming experience using Java, C++, SQL, Oracle, .NET, and Linux. Here freshwater shermen have the Caloosahatchee River, Lake Okeechobee and Lake Trafford to choose from, as well as the many local ponds and canals. Of course, the Gulf of Mexico calls to saltwater shermen. For the dedicated sherman, and even the once-in-a-while sherman, the local bait shop holds the key to their passion. Miller Bait and Tackle, 303 Old CR 78, opened April 28. Family owned and operated, it is the second one for Mike and Judy Miller, who opened their rst in Fort Myers just a year ago. When they heard longtime shop owner Julie Jeffords was selling her shop, they came to take a look for themselves. They loved what they saw a beautiful little town, a nice shop in the perfect place right on the river at the boat dock. What could be better? So they decided this was just the place for them to expand. So far, Judy said they're very happy with their choice, and glad for the opportunity. "It's been great!" she said, adding that, in addition to the location, the people here are fantastic and the customers pleasant Judy said the LaBelle shop is a little different than Fort Myers, re ecting the fresh water shing in this area, so customers look for different types of arti cial bait. Miller Bait and Tackle can accommodate all types of shermen, with live bait including red worms, red wigglers and night crawlers, crickets, shiners and minnows. If you're going out to the Gulf, you'll want to check out their frozen saltwater bait including shrimp, squid, nger mullet and chum block. Of course, they have an excellent selection of rods and reels, nets, marine supplies and boat batteries. You can purchase all types of shing and sporting licenses at the shop. And you can load up on ice and soda at Millers Bait and Tackle before shoving off. "This is your bait shop," Judy ssys, adding that they listen to their customers. Miller Bait and Tackle also handles rod and reel repairs, and offer information on charters by Capt. Frank Sipe of Hook N Time. Miller Bait and Tackle is open ever y day from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Call 863-342-8264 or check them out online at www.millerbaitandtackle.com. My pool buddy, Anita, suggested apple cider vinegar so next time I tried it. Almost immediately the itching stopped but the next time I tried it... Nothing... So, I guess, my advice is to try it as a rst defense because it’s all natural and can’t hurt. There are thousands of uses for vinegar as us “old timers” know. Plain white vinegar is an excellent cleaner for oors, counter tops and all glass. Just dilute with water.I don’t measure just use the glug, glug method. A few glug, glugs in some water. My friend, Carol Barry, puts some in a spray bottle for quick jobs. When your bottles of dish detergent are empty wash the ip up tops and save them. I put one on m y bottle of vinegar, peroxide and anything else you want to control how much comes out. Just yesterday I used my old hint of cutting a tube of hand cream in half, near the bottom and used it three more times. In these trying times we need to save all the money we can. Things my mother taught me ( nd most of you, too) STAMINA: You’ll sit there until all that spinach is gone....or.... LOGIC: If you fall out of that tree and break your neck, you’re not going to the store with me.. And lastly... JUSTICE: Some day you’ll have kids o f your own and I hope they act just like you. Zara has also just written her rst book, Ada, the story of a young girl taken as a baby from her parents and raised by the King and Queen, Ada has started to realize that not everyone is what they seem. Zara Bailey has a degree in drama and performance, she believes her writing is not just words on paper but a way to enter into the world of the characters within a story. She believes that as an actress writing as the characters, it helps make her writing more realistic and believable. The illustrations for the books were also done by her father, John Bailey. Submitted photo/ Bobbie SprattRep. Hudson at LaBelle Middle SchoolLaBelle Middle School held its 8th grade transition and awards ceremony on June 7 in the school gym. The program began with Sheriff Steve Whidden leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The students were inspired by the guest speaker, Representative Matt Hudson. Rep. Hudson will be our new State Representative with the recent redistricting. He challenged them to step-up to make the tough decisions dealing with where they go from LMS, to set priorities and to always remember they are in charge of their destiny. Mayor Paul Puletti continued the tradition of presenting a City of LaBelle Proclamation for eighth graders. Principal Gary White sealed the transition to LaBelle High School by presenting the Proclamation to LHS Assistant Principal Ken Pickles. Each homeroom teacher presented their class and each student was congratulated by Superintendent of Schools Mr. Richard Murphy. A light reception followed in the cafeteria for parents and students. The teachers, students and parents are to be congratulated for their accomplishments. Best of luck to the Class of 2016!
