Memorial Day is for honoring the dead and for healing of the living. This is the reason why we are gathered here today. There are several fallen heros from this small town of LaBelle and Felda. Also several that came back alive from some war or another with sad memories of fallen comrades on foreign soil. This is still happening today, lets pray that our local soldiers are spared and remember those that made the ultimate sacri ce. They are the reason we have the freedom of living in the greatest nation in the world, The United States of America. Remember freedom is not free and for Americans to remain living free unfortunately there will be other fallen heros. God willing we will be here to honer them! May their souls rest in Glory and Peace as those in Flanders Field. Delivered by R.P. More and more development more people, more vehicles, less open space, less natural prey available. Wildlife conservationists are rejoicing after securing 1,278 acres that will help the native Florida cat to thrive. Several conservation groups, including The Nature Conservancy, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Wal-Mart and the US Army Corps of Engineers came together and snatched the propert y from imminent foreclosure on Ma y 22. Priv ate property just east of Port LaBelle, owner Lone Ranger LLC, will continue to use it as a working cattle ranch. The only difference is that The Nature Conservancy and the Natural Resources Conservation Service will manage wildlife easements on the property. The development rights were purchased by NRCS through the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), to preserve the land as a panther corridor. This property is described as a “linchpin” by Doria Gordon, Director of Conservation Science for the Florida Chapter of the Nature Conservancy a crucial piece that has been documented to be used by panthers to cross the Caloosahatchee River. Because it and the parcel across the river are still used for agriculture, which is compatible with panther movement, it is considered a “must have.” It is also a narrower part of the river, making the crossing easier for the big cats. Currently, it is estimated that there are from 100-160 panthers remaining in the wild. Shelly Lakly, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in Florida said, “To prevent extinction the panther population must grow, yet the current habitat south of the Caloosahatchee River is at maximum capacity. That’s why buying this land the land known to be the route out of south Florida was so critical. It opens up a future. The most at-risk property in a dwindling panther corridor was purchased right before foreclosure. It would have been extremely dif cult to protect this critical panther corridor if this property was lost.” Col. Alfred Pantano, Commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District had this to say: “By relocating the US Army Corps of Engineers’ easements, we will preserve this critical panther habitat crossing and allow the current population to expand up into the Kissimmee River watershed. I’d like to applaud the Nature Conservancy, Natural Resources Conservation Service, US Department of Agriculture, National Wildlife Refuge Association. US Fish and Wildlife Service, notably Paul Souza, and the Corps’ Karl Nixon, for making this dream a reality. We look forward to continuing this collaborative effort to conserve property that is critical for providing Florida Panther crossing habitat.” Ken Warren of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, said the largest of the easements created is about 700 acres, which will be restored as wetlands by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, a division of the USDA. He said although the land will remain a ranch with the landowner managing it as he sees t its role as a natural preserve should not present any con icts. Cattle and panthers have been coexisting in Florida for over a century. Mr. Warren noted that panther range shrunk from the entire southeastern US down to just South Florida. Now, panthers have only portions of Southwest Florid a from the Everglades to the Caloosahatchee River as their territory. He noted that there is documented evidence this parcel is used as a panther migration corridor. However, there is no documented breeding panther population north of the river. He said onl y four collared males have been documented crossing the river no females. Several months ago, however a female panther with two cubs were documented in the vicinity o f this property. “The broader bene t is that it will not be possible to develop this land into perpetuity,” Mr. Warren explained. The Florida Crime and Intelligence Analyst Association were founded in May of 1995 as a professional association. It began in a training class taught by Steve Gottlieb in Vero Beach, Florida who asked a simple question, “Who in this room believes that it is not only possible, but prudent, that analysts, no matter what discipline should organize in this state?” A sign up sheet was passed around the room, and the organization was born. The vision of the founding members was to develop a network in which vital information about emerging crime trends, critical intelligence information, and educational and training issues could be shared. The other part of the vision was to create a process by which those involved in this career eld would be clearly recognized as professionals. Through a state sanctioned certi cation process, standards would be developed in areas of skill, knowledge, abilities, education and training. The mission of the Florida Crime and Intelligence Analyst Association is as follows: To establish the Florida Crime and Intelligence Analyst Association for the purpose of providing technical and analytical training, exchanging information and ideas, and to establish a state certi cation process, which will enhance the effectiveness, ef ciency and professionalism of crime and intelligence analysts. In the Fall Issue of the FCIAA Analyst News, Brenda White, Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce Analyst/Investigative Assistant received recognition by the FCIAA and was spotlighted for her accomplishments. Brenda began her career with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce on April 1, 1998 when she was hired as a Misdemeanor Secretary for the East District Of ce. Shortly after that time, she advanced into the Felony Secretary position and for ve years was the only CID Secretary for the East District Of ce. In April 2005, after Hurricane Wilma, she was transferred to the West District Of ce where for several years she was the only CID Secretary for the Sheriff’s Of ce. Brenda began her goals to becoming an Analyst in 2004 when she attended a Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training and became a certi ed Analytical Investigative Technician. Brenda attended and completed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Basic Analyst I and Basic Analyst II courses and received certi cation for both. Brenda is the rst Crime Analyst for the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce and at times nds herself overwhelmed in researching and compiling data. Brenda is passionate and compulsive in her role as Analyst/Investigative Assistant and doesn’t call it a day until every task on her desk is completed. Brenda has served as Board of Director to the Florida Agricultural Crimes Intelligence Unit for the past three years and as the Florida Ag Crime Counter Terrorism Network Coordinator for twelve years. Brenda has been married to Charles White for thirty years who is also employed with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce as the Agricultural Crimes Unit Sergeant. Naming Your Resumeby Matt KindermannThis week we will walk you through a resume search to provide some insight into how computerized application systems rate resumes and how Human Resource professionals screen them. Knowing how a resume is electronically rated will help ensure that yours is read and not thrown away without ever being looked at. For this simpli ed scenario, we will follow Joe HR as he looks to hire the most quali ed person for a cashier job, using the least amount of his time. Joe HR starts his applicant pool search by publishing a job order or vacancy notice, which has the quali cations that Joe HR is looking for in candidates. For a cashier, Joe HR needs to have someone who is over the age of 18, has a minimum education of a high school diploma or GED and has 6 months of cash handling experience. As potential candidates send their applications electronically to Joe HR, a computer program automatically searches the resumes and looks for the key words Joe HR is looking for, such as "education," "cashier" and "experience." The computer then sorts all the applications by percentage rate. Those resumes that meet all of Joe HR's requirements are scored at a 100 percent match, and those that are missing one of the three requirements are scored at a 66 percent match. Joe HR has over 50 applications that have been scored at a 100 percent match. Reviewing them all will take a lot of time, and he chooses not to review any of the resumes below the 100 percent match. Also, the resumes are mostly written using Microsoft Word, some of them are written using Microsoft Works, and a few of them are written using WordPad. Joe HR only uses Microsoft Word and his company has not yet upgraded to Of ce 2010, so he throws away all the resumes not saved in Microsoft Word 1997-2003 format. This narrows down the resume list to 30 applicants and Joe HR now looks at the title of the resumes. Some of the resumes are simply titled with applicant's names, such as "Dan's Resume" or "Sue Smith Resume 2." This doesn't tell Joe HR much about what is inside the resume and he is only interested in reading the resumes that are labeled "Mark Lee Experienced Cashier" and "M. Miller Customer Service and Banker." These resumes are more likely to contain the experience Joe HR is looking for without wasting his time reading them all. Out of the 50 initial applications, Joe HR offers interviews to Mr. Lee and Mrs. Miller. Matthew Kindermann by Les Morgan Scripture says power of prayer is the power of God and He is the One who hears and answers prayer. A wise pastor once admonished his congregation with these words: "No believer is greater than his prayer life." Certainly David agreed with that. In Ps 18:6 we read, "In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice." Also in Ps 34:17 these words are given: "The righteous cry out and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles." The power of prayer does not ow from us. It is not special words that are to be repeated, or spoken in a special way. Nor is there power by how often we say a phrase, or even a certain direction we face, or a certain position of our bodies. Power in prayer doesn't come from the use of artifacts or icons or candles or beads. The power of prayer comes from the omnipotent One who hears & answers us! As strange as it may sound, Satan understands the power of prayer, ghting ercely to reduce its impact. To him, prayer is like an obvious military strategy attack targets that are the greatest threats! In redeeming mankind Jesus didn't search the back corner of heaven and grab an under-challenged angel with nothing to do. He came Himself and paid bill for sin. He gave His best as He gave Himself! While on the earth not only did Jesus pray but He also taught prayer! In Mt 14:23 we nd, "when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up into a mountain apart to pray: when the evening was come he was there alone. Likewise, Mk. 1:35 records Jesus got up earlier while it was still dark and prayed." The disciples clearly noted the prayer life of Jesus, for Luke 11:1 tells us they said to Him one day, "Lord, teach us to pray." Jesus also challenged the disciples in Mt 26:41: "Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing, the body is weak!" In Lk 18:1 He said, "Men ought always to pray and not give up. In John 15:7 He promised, "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." Then in Acts 1, just prior to His accession back to heaven, He commissioned the church to evangelism, but not before instructing them to pray while waiting in the coming of the Holy Spirit. From Jerusalem they were told to go to Judea, Samaria, and even to the uttermost parts of earth. Yet, prayer came rst! Paul addressed the need for church everywhere to pray. In Phil. 4:6-7 he writes, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts & minds in Christ Jesus." He also wrote to the church at Rome the following: "the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express." (Rom 8:26) Moreover, he calls believers to "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thes. 5:16-18) Caloosa Baptist Church is believing the Lord for great days and for a strong move of God in our community. Therefore, man y people who claim Caloosa as their home church will be praying from this Friday from 6:00 pm until Saturday at 6:00 am. Those who will be praying have signed up to come to the church to pray for two hours. Along with praying, they will also be reviewing some key Biblical passages about prayer and asking the Lord to work in man y ways for His glory. "We are expecting people to become strong believers in Christ after this prayer meeting," said, Dr. Les Morgan, pastor o f Caloosa Baptist. "We are asking the Lord for miracles, for way-ward children to return to their families and to God, and for people to have an encounter with the living God like nothing they have ever experienced." Do you have something or someone for whom you want prayer? Please call the church at 675-4673 and let the believers at Caloosa Baptist know. Or, if you prefer contact the pastor at drlkmorgan@gmail. com. People will be praying all night and the church believes God will do powerful things for the honor of His name. God Bless you.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located on Highway 80 across from City Hall. Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantVolunteer of the YearSalvation Army LaBelle Volunteer of the Year Margaret Edward has put her considerable efforts volunteering for the organization in Hendry County since the early 1990s. She currently volunteers at the LaBelle Service Center as a food pantry worker two days a week, is a client intake liaison and helps with mobile food distribution. She is always available for seasonal assistance and especially enjoys assisting with the Christmas Cheer program. “Ms. Margaret” strongly upholds the mission of the Salvation Army and practices it in her everyday life. She is consistently reaching out to the community through her church and gets her church motivated to partner with the Salvation Army as well. “Ms. Margaret” is pictured with Major Tom Louder, Area Commander of the Southwest Florida Salvation Army at a luncheon May 14. by Patty BrantCaloosa BelleSolving civic center issuesA request to waive the fee for using the LaBelle Civic Center led to a discussion at the board’s May 10 meeting on the deplorable state of the facility caused by some renters. The problem seems to come from indiv idual renters rather than non-pro ts. Even though deposits are required, the lack of oversight during events allows for damage to the building. The discussion took place at the city commission’s May 10 meeting. The mayor suggested that the city hire an independent contractor to monitor all events at the civic center. Staff is putting together a Request for Proposals for the position. In other business:The board unanimously approved a new hotel/motel standards ordinance, setting aside speci c areas of the city where such facilities can be built. LFD Chief Ray Pittman reported that calls for service remain steady at about 70 calls per month, most being traf c crashes. Recently, LFD responded to its rst fatal re in some time. It occurred at Aqua Isles. HCSO Lt. Minnie Bryant reported the sheriff’s department has closed a number of burglary cases with several recent arrests. Click it or Ticket, the annual push for safety belt use, is coming up. Department of Transportation will soon be milling and resurfacing SR 29 from SR 80 to Glades County. Plans for a city golf course need a commercial assessment to support the nancial bene t. The county needs to adopt an ordinance for the commercial assessment because its structure does not currently allow for such a study to be done. LaBelle Financial Director Ron Zimmerly said the city, which has an interlocal recreation agreement with the county, can have the study done and suggested a company in Clewiston that can do it much cheaper than outsiders. The survey will cost $15,000 and there is no guarantee that it will actually support any bene t. The city is asking that the Rec Board pay for the survey. If not the city could pay for it through reserve funds. Showing a nancial bene t to the community for a golf course will be the rst step in making one a reality. Time is of the essence in order to be on the ad valorem TRIM notice for this year’s taxes. In addition, LaBelle Finance Director Ron Zimmerly told the board that the city may be forced to go with the roll back rate the amount of taxes that would bring in the same amount of revenue as the previous year when it sets the millage rate in the fall. The city has kept its millage to three mills for many years. City commissioners voted to set up a multi-year contract with lobbyists Spratt and Associates, which has been very successful in working for LaBelle’s interests. It was awful. No lights or AC and I thought how many times I complained about my electric bill...Well, guess what? Nothing makes you appreciate the FPL crew like a blackout. They work in stormy weather, in the black of night and the freezing cold to keep us comfortable and we should thank God every day for them. Tried two new hints lately. One I hesitated to believe and much to my surprise it worked!! Take a brown lunch bag, put about a 1/4 cup popcorn kernels in it and fold it over a few times, put it in the microwave and let it pop for about 2 or 3 minutes. Just like the micro popcorn you bu y in the grocery store, Stay right there and when it slows down take it out. The other one was to put a paper towel in the bag with lettuce, spinach, etc. Change it every day or two. It keeps so much better. Just realized that if I am in mid-life right now I will live to be 152 years old...Please somebody, just shoot me... In mid-life your memory starts to go. In fact the only thing we retain is water... Now that I’m older I thought it was great that I seemed to have so much more patience. Turns out that I just don’t give a rat’s butt. David, Nana, Justin & Ricky ASHLEY NICHOLE CRUZ GRADUATION 8 Caloosa Belle May 31, 2012 by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle Athletics is a big part of the high school experience for many young people. For some, the experience continues at the college level. That is the case for Cowgirl Socorro “Coco Puff” Ruiz who, to anyone’s best recollection, is the rst LHS female cross country/track athlete to sign to play for a college team. Next year, Socorro will wear the uniform of the Emmanuel College Lady Lions, a Christian liberal arts school in Franklin Springs, Ga., where she plans to study business on an athletic scholarship. The formal signing took place at a small celebration May 23 in the LHS library. Surrounded by her family, coaches and many well-wishers, Socorro and her mother signed the papers that opened the next door in her young life. Coach Jef Frost said Socorro has been a varsity member of girls cross country for three years. He said she’s a hard worker in practice and a tough competitor. “This year she was the only runner, boy or girl, to improve her time each race.” At district nals she ran 20:41, and nished sixth out of 53 runners to qualify as an individual for the regional nals in Titusville. There she lowered her time to 20:13 and nished 12th out of 97 runners to advance to state nals in Tampa. Her time of 20:13 was the second best ever at LaBelle High School. She became only the second individual girl to qualify for the state nals in cross country. At state nals, she nished a very respectable 73th out of 176 total runners. Her time, 21:33, is the best ever recorded by an LHS Girls Cross Country runner at state. Coach Frost also noted that Socorro is one of only two female four-year sport athletes this year. For Athletic Director David Kelley, his brief statement, “We are proud of you,” said it all. Principal Lucinda Kelley added that Socorro is a great representative of LHS a great athlete, great student and great person who lives her dreams. Ms. Kelley predicted that Socorro will do great things as she overcame her own self doubts and lives up to her potential. Coach Jenny McClain had no problem showing her emotions, tearing up as she simply said of Socorro, “She knows how much I love her.” For herself, Socorro wanted to thank all the coaches at LHS who helped her push herself to the fullest. She said she expects to t into college athletics because she will already know what she has to do. Everyone around Socorro describes here the same way she’s a “super person.” And as Principal Kelley said, “That’s what matters most of all.” Ruiz to play for Emmanual College Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantSeated from left: Socorro Ruiz with her little sister, Delilah (a rst grader and Student of the Month) and their mother, Maria Lineres. Accepted into the honors program, Alexa will be attending Florida State University in the fall to pursue a degree in music therapy. Humberto Salinas Jr. is the son of Humberto and Claudia Salinas. He is very grateful and honored to be the Valedictorian of the class of 2012 with a 4.934 GPA. Humberto plans on attending the University of South Florida and majoring in engineering. In addition to ranking at the top of his class, Humberto was a member of the Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, CROP, Key Club and V arsity Tennis team. “It’s the greatest honor anybody can get,” Humberto said. “It was unexpected, but it’s something that I always dreamed of.” Humberto didn’t slack his senior year and took four AP classes which was a challenge for him but he managed to pull it off. He hopes to relax a little bit before becoming a USF Bull but he plans to attack college with the same mind set that got him to the top of his class at LaBelle High School.
