Caloosa Belel/ Patty BrantNeighbors mourn the loss of Mary Inez Stone in the accidental blaze that totally destroyed her home in Aqua Isles last Saturday night. Fire ghters did a superb job of containing the re in an area where the homes are within just feet of each other. The neighboring mobile home sustained some heat damage to the siding. by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle A LaBelle woman lost her life during the early morning hours of Saturday, May 5, as re ripped through her mobile home in Aqua Isles. Mary Inez Stone, 75, lived alone at Lot H23S in an older mobile home, according to LaBelle Fire Chief Ray Pittman. She had resided there since 1991-92 and was known as a "very sweet woman." Retired, she had worked at Oakbrook Nursing Home. Lt. A.T. Stafford of the Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives in W est Palm Beach reported that the re had been ruled accidental, and probably originated from a cigarette or candle left burning. He said Ms. Stone was known to be a heavy smoker. Chief Pittman said the re most likely smoldered for a long time before ames erupted. The home w as already half engulfed in ames w hen deputies arrived at the scene, he explained. Apparently, the mobile home w as not equipped with a re alarm, or the victim would have been Blaze claims victim by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle Even as the LaBelle Heritage Museum has opened its doors at its new location, members continue to carefully pack up and move artifacts from its old location on S. Lee Street. The new location, 360 N. Bridge Street, is itself a LaBelle historical treasure, the old Poole Store, built in 1911. Members are certainly excited about the move. In fact, the increased visibility of the museum has already resulted in many more visitors since the move last February. Inside the LaBelle Heritage Museum continues to focus attention on the people and the times that built LaBelle. One of the museum's prize artifacts, the historic Warren Steam Engine from the commuter boat Navette, once owned by J.P. Morgan and eventually sunk from disrepair into an old section of the Caloosahatchee River, is to be placed as a permanent displa y in Barron Park, with photos and supporting documenation at the museum. One of the focal points of the museum continues to be Dr. Brungard's of ce, set up as it was when she came to practice medicine in LaBelle in 1951. and nature area, featuring ancient bones, many of which were discovered right here in the LaBelle area. Partway encircling the fossil room, local artist Meredith Marcum is gradually completing a murual depicting scenes from a prehistoric LaBelle. Another display highlights kitchen items used by many a mother locally to care for her family and household in the early years of the town. Ella Forrey Burchard’s handmade traditional Seminole dress is displayed and nearby the reproduction of a 19th Century loom stands. An ADA ramp makes it easy to move from the parking lot into the building and plans are to put in an elevator to the second oor. Shelving from old Forrey Store and the Western Union desk add to the ambiance of a place dedicated to the past. Volunteers are also working on a photo gallery. Docent Caroline White came to LaBelle in 1988 and, thanks to her association with Lynda Rider Smith who has been a major in uence in the LaBelle Heritage Museum for many years, developed a strong connection with the area. She and her fellow volunteers can provide an entertaining and educational trip through LaBelle’s past. Upstairs, visitors will soon be able to enjoy traveling exhibits and research on local history using historical documents and old newspapers such as the Caloohathee Current and the Henry County News. An activity room for kids will help ensure that the importance of LaBelle’s past remains part of the younger generation’s consciousness. Don’t forget to visit the gift area as your leaving. The LaBelle Heritage Museum has participated in many area activities, including LaBelle’s Night on the Town and the Chamber of Commerce Farmers Market. It has taken part in the city’s Christmas celebration by decorating and hosting an open house at the Captain Hendry House last December. The museum assisted with events co-hosted by Edison State College, the Clewiston Museum and Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Museum for artifact and material preservation. it also participated in the very pouplar Big O Birding Festival this year. The museum also hosts events for the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and other groups that highlight LaBelle’s history. On Saturday, May 12, from 1-4 p.m. Paton-the-Porch, a special demonstration of the art of using the spinning wheel, will be put on by Pat Johnson. The H.A. Rider home and of ce, which formerly housed the museum, will be moved behind the building eventually. The museum is actively fundraising and looking for grants to go toward this major expense. Membership meetings are the rst Thursday of every month except June, Jul y and August, and include programs on local, state and national history. Docents are available on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m.noon, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 1-4 p.m. to welcome guests. Admission is $3 for adults; free for members. Annual dues are $20 for individuals and $35 for couples. The museum is planning a grand opening for its new location in October. LaBelle Heritage Museum is the repository for the community’s collective history, offering a unique and fascinating look into the past in a charming new setting. They can alert residents to a re before damages are irreparable. FireContinued From Page 1 group celebrated its rst anniversary with a gathering of members at the Firehouse Community Theatre in LaBelle. President LaVon Koenig walked the audience through the group’s rst year of existence, recounting an initial year of achievements including the development and acceptance of a logo, various speaking engagements, development of a Web site and a Facebook page. During its rst year Arts of the Inland has attracted 76 members and was represented at some top notch events, including its very rst function Constitution Day Sept. 17 at Majestic Golf Course in LeHigh Acres. That event was followed up by Arts in the Park was in LaBelle on February 4 and the huge Balloon Fest in Immokalee, where individual members had booths, the Children’s Activity Stage and general outreach. Some members have also encouraged student interns at these events and, at this point, the group has managed to garner grants and sponsors in the amount of $3,000. Af liation with the Arts Council of Southwest Florida should provide even bigger opportunities for grants, Ms. Koenig said. After a summer break from June through August, monthly meetings will resume till January, when Arts of the Inland plans to meet every other month. Ms. Koenig told members that the group is seeking partherships with businesses and universities to highlight the arts. She said the group also needs additional board and committee members. A local reception is being planned for December in Hendry County and on Tuesday, May 15, the group will met at Barron Library at 6:30 p.m. with Librarian Karen Hildebrand as speaker. Paid Job Trainingby Matt KindermanPaid job skills training is available in the Southwest Florida region and comes in many shapes and sizes. Individual training programs are generally categorized as promoting either hard skills or soft skills. Hard skills are technical abilities such as wiring a house or programming a computer. Soft skills are personal characteristics such as being able to talk to customers or wearing appropriate dress at work. Some highly technical workers lack people skills, and some highly personable people lack technical skills. Work Experience Program (WEP) is designed to help potential workers gain necessary employability soft skills. Some applicants may be educationally quali ed for a position, but they have never held a job before. These applicants may not be able to show on a resume that they know what it is like to show up for work on time, interact with co-workers and customers, put in a full day's work, and be dependable. Under WEP, an applicant receives temporary employment in order to learn workrelated soft skills. The bene t to a willing employer is that they receive a temporary employee and they are only responsible for a portion of their salary. On the Job Training (OJT) is similar to WEP except that the job seeker lacks a certain technical skill or ability in order to be hired outright. OJT allows for the reimbursement of up to 50 percent of the candidates wages, for up to six months, while the employer trains the candidate to the speci c requirement or skill gap. OJT can be initiated when an employment representative contacts an employer to offer OJT for an open position, or when a quali ed job seeker offers themselves to an employer as an OJT candidate. The bene t to a willing employer is that they are able to train a potential candidate to their own speci cations while receiving wage reimbursement. To be considered for WEP, OJT, or any of the other training programs, ensure your registration on www.employ roida. com is current and attend a one hour long programs orientation session at the local workforce of ce. WEP and OJT are open to most occupations, both hourly and salary positions. Employers who wish to take advantage of the OJT program, or wish to initiate a paid internship using workforce nancial assistance, should contact their local employment representative. Southwest Florida Works is the regional state workforce board for Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. That is very true, for no one impacts the life of a child more than his or her mother. All of us could testify how our moms are personally woven into our very soul, that, without her in uence, we would be very empty. Henry Ward Beecher was a well-known member of the US Congress, as well as a clergyman. Known for his pithy word pictures he often used to drive home a point in a sermon or a speech, he said the following about a mom: "The mother's heart is the child's schoolroom." Then he added, "We never know the love of the parent until we become parents ourselves." Right on, Pastor and Representative Beecher! Anne Morrow Lindbergh was an author, the wife to Charles Lindbergh, and a mother. She gave the world a strong insight into the role a woman assumes when she become a mother. She said, "By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great vacationless' class." Well stated, Mrs. Lindbergh. In line with that, one weary, over-worked, exhausted mother, uttered this prayer to the good Lord. See if you can identify Dear Lord, it's such a hectic day With little time to stop and pray For life's been anything but calm Since You called on me to be a mom Running errands, matching socks Building dreams with building blocks Cooking, cleaning, and nding shoes And other stuff that children lose Fitting lids on bottled bugs Wiping tears and giving hugs A stack of last weeks mail to read So where's the quiet time I need? Yet when I steal a minute, Lord Just at the sink or ironing board To ask the blessings of Your grace I see then, in my small one's face That you have blessed me All the while And I stop to kiss That precious smile Elizabeth Stone gave a wonderful illustration for all who are not mothers as to what it is like to be a mom. She said, "Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." So, Mom, thanks for all you do. You are a real trooper, a great example and your love is a glowing example of that similar to the Lord Himself. Please know how important you are to us. Thank you!Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located directly across the street from City Hall on Highway 80. The electors are also allowed to reverse a prior decision. The procedure to change from elected to appointed can be found in Statute 5, Article IX of the State of Florida Constitution. In the case of Hendry County, the rst step would be for the district school board to use a formal resolution requesting that the board of county commissioners places upon the ballot a proposition to make the of ce of district school superintendent appointive. This proposition must be placed upon the ballot at the time of a general election or a statewide primary or special election. Church Briefs by Pat Dobbins Mark your calendar for May 17th! The Blood Mobile will be at the Hendry County Health Department at 1140 Pratt Blvd, LaBelle from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Every three seconds someone, somewhere, needs a blood transfusion. Blood is always in demand and that’s why we’ve made it easy to donate. The Blood Mobile is one of the easiest ways for you to donate blood. Why should you consider donating blood? The best reason to donate blood is saving lives! Your blood donation could save the life of someone who has cancer or leukemia, or someone who is having surgery. Donating blood is easy. You just have to go through a short registration process, answer a few medical questions to make sure that you are healthy enough to donate. The process of donating blood is fast. It should only take about 5-10 minutes to donate, and the whole process shouldn’t take any longer than 40 minutes. To donate blood, you must be in good health, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. You must be 17 years old or older. Please note: 16-year-olds can donate with a parent’s consent. Why you may not be able to donate. If you have a cold or the u or if you have a sore throat you will not be eligible to donate blood. If you are being treated for an illness or have had recent dental surgery you may not be able to donate. However, there are several medications that you can take and still be allowed to donate blood. (Such as aspirin, Tylenol, blood pressure medications) Be sure to eat well at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of uids. You may donate whole blood once every 56 days, which allows plenty of time for your red cells to be replenished. Please note: There is no risk of contracting HIV/AIDS or any other disease through the blood donation process. Each collection kit is sterile, pre-packaged and used only once. Please consider donating blood. We hope to see you on Thursday, May 17! Bloodmobile coming to Hendry County Health Department

With the victory on Wednesday, April 25, the Cowboys had a chance on Friday, April 27, for the district championship against the always tough Bishop Verot Vikings. The Cowboys took the loss to the #12 team in the nation 10-1 and traveled to Ft. Pierce on Thursday, May 3, to take on Lincoln Park A cademy in the rst round of the state playoffs at 7:00. Against Dunbar, southpaw Steven Sodrel pitched ve strong innings giving up only four hits and no earned runs. The senior struck out 11 Tigers and walked two. Austin Garcia had another incredible night with his bat going 3 for 3 with a triple and mammoth 2-run homer. The junior third baseman also scored two runs. Senior catcher Bo Meador and junior out elder Kippy Stansly were both 2 for 3 for LaBelle, while junior out elder Ronnie Burton crushed a 2-run triple. Against Bishop Verot the Cowboys could not nd an answer to stop the Vikings as they scored seven quick runs in the rst two innings on their way to the District 4A-11 Championship. The boys battled all the way even though we let them get that early lead. "They never gave up and that's all I ever ask is to ght to the nish, Coach Dunbar commented. Ron Saunders, 2010-2012 Chairman of the Florida House of Representatives’ Democratic Caucus, as the MC for the event. I have known Rep. The LaBelle Garden Club invites any and everyone to a special celebration Memorial Day, May 28, in honor of their 30th anniversary. Share in food, fun and fellowship, plus lots of sharing and reminiscing about the years gone by. Would love to have any and all past members and guests to join us in this celebration. If you know the where-a-bouts of any of those listed below, or family members, please pass this information on to them. In 1981 Kenneth and Alice Frost lived in LaBelle, and they both loved to garden. Ken decided that LaBelle should have a garden club, so he talked to other gardeners to interest them into forming a club. The rst meeting to organize a club was at the home of Elmer and Verna Otto on 01/14/82. From that meeting, The Greater LaBelle Garden Club was formed on May 27, 1982, with the constitution and bylaws being established. Arrangement was made to have monthly meetings at the Women's Club building. Elected of cers: President Jim Wood; Vice President Ed Moody; Treasurer Verna Otto; Recording Secretar y Linda Lyons; Corresponding Secretar y Royce Hillard Committee Chairs: Flora Arrangements for Programs Sherry Davis; Hendry County Extension Agent Doug Ross; Work Chairman Wade Hammond; Tour Chairman Alice Frost; House Committee John Wieboldt; Refreshments Laura Brown; Hospitality Dorine Scribner; Historian Carol Grigsby. Jim True presented the rst program on Bromeliads. Other early attendants were: Marcie Woods, Lynn Davidson (Mrs. Craig E. Davidson), Leonard King, Linda Lyons (Mrs. David Lyons), Richard and Dorothy P uge, Louise Samuels, Dorine Scribner, Joe and Georgia Soukup, and John and Ruth Wieboldt.
