The 11th Annual Big O Birding Festival proved highly successful thanks to wonderful weather and plenty of cooperation from our local birds. Over 200 birding enthusiasts participated in the four-day event that covered sites throughout Hendry and Glades Counties. Highlights included the J-7 Ranch Tour, which was a sell out. Two owl hoots were also conducted with one at Fisheating Creek and the other at Riverside Retreat in LaBelle. At Gatorama, attendees got to help with a ‘dig’ for crocodile eggs. The tours on Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee were also popular as was the kayaking on the oxbows of the Caloosahatchee. Special guests included Amy Bennett Williams, author of “Life on the Caloosahatchee,” and renowned Woodstork researcher J ason Lauristsen, who provided the key note address to close out the festival on Saturday evening at the Port LaBelle Inn. Over 150 species of birds were reported during the event with See Birding — Page 2

There are all smiles at Southern Gardens Citrus Processing (SGCP) facility has they just received their FSSC 22000 certi cation. FSSC 22000 is based on internationally recognized International Standards Organization (ISO) 22000 and British Institute (BSI) Public A vailable Speci cation (PAS) 220 requirements. FSSC 22000 certi cation has gained full approval by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GSFI) and is recognized as one of the highest standards in Food Safety that organizations can obtain. Tris Chapman, Vice President and General Manager for Southern Gardens Citrus Processing, comments that "Southern Gardens is deeply committed to Food Safety and Quality and achieving FSSC 22000 certi cation is the highest standard in safeguarding products that Southern Gardens delivers to its customers." Consumers around the world are becoming more sensitive than ever to Food Safety issues due to several food health outbreaks in recent years. FSSC 22000 is a whole new approach to risk management and quality assurance that more organizations across the food supply chain from processors to retailers. Large retailers and manufactures are aware of food health risk concerns from their customers and are now insisting that suppliers within their supply chain achieve a recognized GSFI certi ed scheme such as FSSC 22000. Southern Gardens Citrus Processing employees recognized this concern and through hard teamwork met this challenge. Susan Ransom from Lloyds Registrar Quality Assurance (LRQA) who performed the FSSC 22000 certi cation audit, stated that Southern Gardens was one of the few facilities that she has audited over the past ve years that there were no minor or major ndings against FSSC 22000 requirements. Ricke Kress, President for Southern Gardens Citrus, commented, "I am happy and pleased at this type of teamwork and these results will prove to be bene cial to our business in the future." Southern Gardens Citrus is only one of a few citrus processing facilities to achieve FSSC 22000 status. In the event of a hurricane or other catastrophe, the Hendry County Emergency Management will attempt to provide special sheltering and transportation for those who have chronic medical conditions requiring special needs. Special needs shelters are truly identi ed as facilities of last refuge for those persons in the community with health and medical conditions. The Hendry County Special Needs Shelter located at West Glades School, in Muse, is de ned as a structure that has auxiliary power and is capable of providing a safer refuge for individuals, and their caregivers, who require health oversight. Considering that the county's medical resources are limited, it is strongly suggested that you pursue primary evacuation plans with family, friends, neighbors, church organizations, etc. Speak with your physician and family about your transportation and sheltering needs. If you require hospitalization, have your physician execute the necessary pre-admission procedures well in advance of a known, pending disaster such as a hurricane. Again, talk to your family, friends, and neighbors about providing you with evacuation transportation. If you live in a mobile home park or an area with an established homeowners association, inquire about your association's disaster plan. Also, if you have special needs that do not require medical sheltering, speak with your Minister, or af liate religious association, or civic organization to see what types of evacuation sponsorship programs are available. Please keep in mind that pets are not allowed in the shelter, so make arrangements for their care well in advance. If you need to attend the West Glades School PSN Shelter, you are required to register before you arrive at the shelter each year, and you are required to bring a caregiver with you into the shelter. Registration forms for Hendry County residents can be obtained from the Hendry County Health Department and the Hendry County Emergency Management Of ce. Once your completed registration is received and reviewed, you will receive noti cation as to whether you qualify for the Special Needs Shelter or not. Should it be determined that your needs do not meet the Special Needs Shelter criteria, you will be noti ed of other shelters that are available in your area in which you can seek refuge. For more information, or if you would like to have a registration form mailed to you, please contact Kelly Dyess at the Hendr y County Emergency Management of ce at (863) 674-5401. Register for Persons with Special Needs (PSN) Shelter Appointments are strongly encouraged. Call 239-343-5224 for more information and to book a time thats convenient for you. by Les MorganMark’s account of the Resurrection includes two small words that make all the difference. He begins by recounting the women w ho came to the tomb to anoint our Lord’s body for burial. To their amazement they found the tomb empty and an angelic being at the tomb, who announced the resurrection. The angel informs them that the Lord is not there, but He is risen. Then, he says, “But go, tell His disciples-and Peter-that He is going before you into Galilee; there you w ill see Him, as He said to you” (Mark 16:7). Do you see those two words that make all the difference? Look carefully. Mark 16:7 includes those crucial words, “and Peter.” There, in a sense, we have the gospel in two words. Why would we nd this insertion-”and Peter”-in the midst of this angelic message. One might have expected that we would have found words of antagonism. That is, “Go and tell His disciples-and Pontius Pilate or Herod or Cephas” or any of the others who played a part in His indictment and conviction. Or perhaps one might have expected to nd words of appreciation. In other words, “Go and tell the disciples and John.” After all, John had been there at the cross with the mother of Jesus when all the others had forsaken and ed. In this same vein of appreciation he could have added the names of Nicodemus or Joseph of Arimathea or Andrew or any number of others. But these were not words of antagonism, nor appreciation. These were words of affection. Our Lord knew Peter’s heart. Peter had denied Jesus in his hour of testing and Peter was in dire need of a word of encouragement, a new beginning, a second chance. Perhaps some of us on this Easter Sunday morning have blown it. What is the message of the empty tomb? It is the message of the second chance. Many of us are faced with setbacks or sorrows. When you think about it, is there anyone on Easter morning who doesn’t need to hear these two words-”and Peter”? I know I need to hear that liberating phrase! Easter means hope, a new start, a new life, a new opportunity, a new beginning. These two little words-”and Peter”-reveal that the second chance is possible and it is personal. How is this second chance possible? It is possible because of the Resurrection. If there were no Resurrection of our Lord there would be no Gospel, no good news, no new beginning. Those two words-”and Peter”came like water to a man dying of thirst. Peter thought the Lord would disown him for Peter had failed so miserably. The Bible is the story of men and women who received a second chance. When it came time to deliver a nation, who of us would have picked a murderer? But God did. Moses had blown it. Forty years on the backside of a desert prepared him to be the emancipator of his people. When the Lord spoke to him from a burning bush, he knew the second chance was possible. And what about the fellow that was so full of lust? Who of us would have ever said that a guy like that could have a heart after God’s own heart? However, when we read King David’s prayer of repentance in Psalm 51 we see that a second chance is possible. And what about Jonah? We all know his story well and remember how “the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time” (Jon. 3:1). He too found that a second chance was possible. Some may read Mark 16:7 and say, “Oh, I’m okay.” But remember, before Simon Peter heard these words he had gone out and “wept bitterly.” When the rooster crowed the coming dawn after his denial, his heart was broken as he was reminded of his sin. How long were his sleepless nights thinking of his cowardice and failure? Simon Peter denied that he even knew the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, his heart was broken. Can you imagine what he must have felt when he heard the angelic message that they were to go and tell his disciples-and Peter-that he was going before them into the Galilee? It is important to recall that while the second chance is possible, no one said it was automatic! Judas did not get it. He reformed but he did not repent. The rich young ruler didn’t get it. He was remorseful and went away “sorrowful” but there’s no record that he ever repented. Pontius Pilate regretted his evil deed, but the Bible never says anything of his repentance. This verse is not for those who may think they can keep on in the same sin and come back time and time again. It is for men and women like Simon Peter who have repented, who have recognized their sin and wept bitterly over it. The Lord Jesus did not have a private meeting with Simon Peter because he was a big sinner and guilty but because he was The Resurrection says, ‘Failure is not Final’ 4 Caloosa Belle April 5, 2012Serving Immokalee Since 1969To Reach UsMailing Address: P.O. P P u b l i s h e d b y Selective Serviceby Matt KindermannThe Selective Service is a vital aspect of national defense and remains dedicated to its historical mission: to register and classify individuals for the Department of Defense in preparation for a national emergency. Many know it as simply “the draft board,” but it is also the gateway to all the bene ts granted by the federal government. All males in the United States are required to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Men may register late but cannot register at all after their 26th birthday. All men who take up residency in the U.S. before their 26th birthday must register, including those on an immigrant visa, illegal aliens, legal permanent residents, refugees and anyone else born in another country who migrate to the U.S. before their 26th birthday. Conscientious Objectors also need to register and may choose to be classi ed exempt from military service only in the event of a draft. Failure to register is a disqualifying factor for many federal bene ts including, but not limited to, federal student loans and grants, federal job training under the Workforce Investment Act, federal employment, contractor security clearance and U.S. citizenship. You DO NOT need a social security number to register and immigration status IS NOT reported to Immigration. Only those men who are members of the military on active duty, reserve or National Guard are exempt from registration and do not need to prove registration for federal bene ts or employment if they possess a military ID card or a DD214. Registration can be easily completed by obtaining a free, pre-paid postage packet from any Post Of ce. Those men disabled, geographically distanced from a Post ofce, or otherwise unable to obtain a Selective Service registration from a Post Of ce, can register on-line at www.sss.gov. Registration is not an automatic draft guarantee as the military will still screen candidates for appropriate mental and medical tness prior to military service. All men are encouraged to register in order to ensure eligibility for federal bene ts to you and your family in the future. Southwest Florida Works will still provide core services to those without Selective Service registration, but intensive services, those involving job training or other nancial assistance, will be restricted within Selective Service criterion. Do not discount yourself today for potential federal assistance you may need in the future! Southwest Florida Works is the regional state workforce board for Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. For job search assistance or employer support, speak with an employment representative nearest you by going to www.sw works. org and click on “Locations.” Speak Out Lies and deceitIt is a shame that in this day and age people are afraid to stand up for truth. You are guilty rst, but instead of seeking the truth we cower down to lies; afraid of lawsuits. What lessons are we teaching our youth these days? Lie, cheat and steal! That’s the only way to advance in this world. Really?!!! I moved to LaBelle because of the moral character the people of this town displayed, especially those in “higher” places. Where did it go? by Pat DobbinsNational Public Health Week is recognized April 2-8. This year’s theme is A Healthier America Begins Today: Join the Movement! Every year, chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes are responsible for millions of premature deaths. Americans miss 2.5 billion days of work because of these illnesses, and all of that lost productivity adds up to billions and billions of dollars! Injuries, unexpected accidents and violence affect people daily in all aspects of life. According to the American Public Health Association (APHA), unintentional injuries, such as motor vehicle crashes, poisonings and burns rank among the top ten causes of death for people aged 44 and younger. A key role of Public Health is promotion and education to help prevent these illnesses and incidents before they develop which is the key to improving our nation’s overall health. There are so many small steps we can take to begin leading healthier lives; sometimes it just takes a little motivation. With this year’s theme of A Healthier A merica Begins Today: Join the Movement, w e can work to encourage communities to take preventive measures to help improve their lives. Little steps can lead to big changes. Since 1995, when the rst full week of A pril was declared National Public Health W eek, communities across the United States have observed National Public Health Week as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the public’s health. It’s so important to educate the public, policymakers and practitioners about issues related to health and what an impact Public Health has made over the years. Here are just a few of the accomplishments thanks to the efforts of Public Health: Vaccinations. Eradicate life threatening diseases such as smallpox and polio. Motor-vehicle safety. Reduces death and disability due to unintentional injuries through the formulation of policies designed to protect the safety of the public, such as seat belt and worker safety laws. Safer workplaces and prevents pollution of our air and land through enforcement of regulatory controls and management of hazardous wastes. Control and prevention of infectious diseases (Measles, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, etc.). Decline in deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke. Promotes healthy lifestyles to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Safer and healthier foods. Healthier mothers and babies. Family planning. Educates populations at risk to reduce sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy and infant mortality. Fluoridation of drinking water and assures our drinking and recreational waters are safe. Recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard. National Public Health Week is a time to unite around a critical public health issues and focus our collective energy on the singular goal of helping people live longer, happier, healthier lives. It was his tears of repentance. There’s no hope for the second chance for one who is simply sorry he or she got caught but only for that one with truly repentant and broken heart. There are not many second chances that exist in the world. The good news is that with God there’s always a second chance. That w as the message of the angels wanted Peter to know. Their communication was crystal clear “be sure and tell Peter that he is not out, he gets to bat again!” They wanted Peter to know that failure is not nal. Easter means hope. It means a new life, a new start, beginning again. Yes, the second chance is possible. “Go and tell the disciplesand Peter!” This Sunday please worship at the church of your choice. On Monday March 26, the Cowboys lost to Lake Placid 4-3 on the road in eight innings. It was the third one-run loss of the season for the Cowboys and the second against the Green Dragons. The Cowboys had numerous opportunities to put the game away early but just could not pull the trigger on the pesky Green Dragons. Junior pitcher Austin Garcia took the loss on the mound but was two for three at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Junior Alton Burton also added a double for the Cowboys. On Tuesday March 27, Cowboy senior pitcher Steven Sodrel took a nohitter into the seventh inning before giving up a triple with one out in a 7-1 victory over county rival Clewiston. Sodrel had a career night on the hill as he nished with 12 strikeouts and two walks for his third victory of the season. Austin Garcia led the Cowboy offense once again going three for four with a double, 2-run homer and three RBI! Alton Burton continues to hit the ball well as "Mr. Utility" went two for three with a double and two RBI. Junior Brandon Miners scored three runs and also had two stolen bases for the Cowboys. On Thursday March 29, the Cowboys defeated Gateway Charter 10-0 as senior Bo Meador recorded his rst career pitching victory. Meador was pushed into the pitching rotation at the last minute and did a tremendous job giving up only four hits and striking out ve in four innings. Sophomore Jarred Miller closed out the last two innings giving up three hits and no runs. Meador was also two for two at the plate with a double while junior Tyler O'Ferrell added two hits in three at bats. Austin Garcia, junior Correy O'Ferrell and senior Tyler Owens also had doubles for the victorious Cowboys. Cowboys win two of three The deadline comment on the Hunting Management Plan has been extended by 15 days. The new deadline is April 21, 2012. Once the comment period concludes, all comments will be considered submitted in the development of the nal plan/EA. The National Park Service (NPS), in consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), has drafted a Hunting Management Plan/Environmental Assessment for Big Cypress National Preserve in accordance with NPS policies. The purpose of the plan is to allow the Preserve superintendent to provide for hunting opportunities in a manner that is in the best interest of the Preserve's resources and the public, while meeting the requirements set forth by the NPS, the Preserve's enabling legislation, the NPS/FWC Cooperative Partnership Agreement, and all federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Hunting in the Preserve is authorized by Public Law (P.L.) 93-440, which established the Preserve in 1974. The original 1974 Preserve is a State Wildlife Management Area, and hunting is managed through regulations published each year by FWC. P.L. 93440 was amended in 1988 by P.L. 100-301, which expanded the Preserve by 147,000 acres. These new lands, known as the Addition, were largely acquired by the federal government in 1996 and have not been open to hunting pending completion of an Addition General Management Plan. That plan was completed in 2010 and states that the NPS will develop a Hunting Management Plan and work with FWC to provide hunting access, de ne hunting seasons, and develop hunting regulations consistent with policies and goals. Alternatives included in this plan are as follows: Alternative 1 No Action Apply Current Management to the Addition Under alternative 1 (no action), management of hunting in the entire Preserve would occur in accordance with the NPS/FWC Cooperative Partnership Agreement. Alternative 2 Minimum Management No Hunting in the Addition Under alternative 2, current hunting management would continue within the original Preserve boundaries, using the guidance outlined in the NPS / FWC Cooperative Partnership Agreement. In the Addition, public hunting would be prohibited. Alternative 3 (Preferred Alternative) New Adaptive Management Strategy Under alternative 3, the NPS and FWC, in consultation with FWS, would cooperate to implement an adaptive management strategy to manage hunting in the Preserve in accordance with the NPS/FWC Cooperative Partnership Agreement. To review the draft plan, visit http://parkplanning.nps.gov/bicy. Follow the appropriate link to Hunting Management Plan/EA. We invite your comments regarding potential issues and concerns that should be considered during the planning process. You can provide comments at the meetings, b y mail, or on-line. You should be aware that your entire comment, including your personal identifying information, may be made publicly available at any time. While you can ask us in your comment to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so. Comments by mail may be sent to Superintendent, Big Cypress National Preserve, 33100 Tamiami Trail East, Ochopee, Florid a 34141-1000. Comments may also be submitted on-line. How does one express the personal experience of going to the very land where the Lord Jesus walked, taught, and encountered human life as we do today? What language can adequately communicate the sights, sounds, and even smells of the Mediterranean region where the God-man entered our world? Where can one go to see, touch and move among the exact areas where the Master Himself healed the hurting, loved the people, forgave the sinner, and changed the w orld? In a word… Israel! And Dr. Les & Val Morgan are taking a group to the Holy Land March 2013. Experiencing the Holy Land will contribute to your relationship with Christ and advance your level of discipleship in a deeper way. Visit key places like Bethlehem, Nazareth, and Jerusalem. Applications are being accepted for the USDA Farm Service Agency’s next round of Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) Project Areas. Proposals will be accepted until April 23, 2012. BCAP provides incentives to farmers and forest landowners to grow non-food crops to be processed into biofuels. Because most energy crops are perennial and take time to mature before harvest, BCAP is designed so suf cient quantities of feedstock will be available to meet future demand. Since these crops can grow where other crops cannot, it provides farmers new opportunities to diversify into more markets. The BCAP Project Areas where these crops are grown will be selected from proposals producers or biomass facilities submit to FSA. The Request for Proposal and additional information can be found at http:// www.fsa.usda.gov/bcap. You may contact the local FSA of ce for more details. Acreage Certi cation Filing an accurate acreage report for all crops and land uses, including failed acreage and prevented planting acreage, can prevent the loss of bene ts for a variety of programs. Acreage reports are required for most Farm Service Agency programs. Crop reporting dates are as follows: April 15th for fall & spring-seeded crops; 15 calendar days after the completion of planting for each speci c crop type for spring & fall fruits and vegetables; May 31st (the year before coverage begins) for ornamental nursery; and June 30th for all other crops (including grass for grazing). Failed acreage must be reported within 15 days of the disaster event and before disposition of the crop. Prevented planting must be reported no later than 15 days after the nal planting date. GovDelivery The USDA Farm Service Agency of ces are moving toward a paperless operation. Producers are asked to enroll in the ne w GovDelivery system which will provide notices, newsletters and electronic reminders instead of a hard copy through the mail. FSA, like many other organizations, is trying to work smarter and be more ef cient. Moving to electronic noti cations via email will help conserve resources and save taxpayer dollars. County Committee ballots will continue to be mailed to all eligible producers. Producers can subscribe to receive free e-mail updates by going to http://www.fsa. usda.gov/subscribe.
