W estern Oxbow Mixed Use DistrictCommissioners approved changes to the future land use category of 146 acres of the W est Oxbow comprehensive plan. Allowable mixed uses include: multi-family and single-family, non-residential retail, service commercial, government and support serv ices, hotel/motel and of ce facilities. Public recreation along the river is also a possibility. The 146 acres in question includes 124 acres for residential and 22 acres for nonresidential. It does not encompass the old Oxbow Golf Course. The plan will allow six residential units per acre (currently three). If a Greenways/ Blueways program is implemented in the future, the maximum residential units would go up to seven per acre. Nonresidential units allowable per acre will remain 0.25. Concerned speakers offered their opinions to the board. Geri Yoraschek noted that plans could include a seven story building along the river. She felt that was too tall for that location and such a building would better be situated on SR 80. She also noted that the LaBelle Fire Department doesn't have a ladder long enough to accommodate that height. She said she would prefer a maximum of three story buildings. Other subjects included the need for a public walking path along river, It was noted that more public opportunities along river are desirable. The re concerns would be addressed during the Planned Unit Development (PUD) phase of the development. John Wanklyn, agent for the nine property owners, have been talking to the county for seven years adding, it's time for a decision. The amendment was a pp roved 4-0 for transmittal to the state for comment. In other business: The board amended its budget due to ndings by the Value Adjustment Board which are expected to decrease property taxes received by $291,000. The board voted to make up the loss by taking $91,000 from capital reserves and $200,000 from the disaster fund. The commissioners discussed more serious de cits on the horizon with Medicare. Although that promises to hit Hendry County hard over $850,000 Commission Chairman Tris Chapman took a long view, saying some good things are in the future for the county. He also noted that some 30 percent of Hendry's population lives under the poverty level. The board approved restrictions that will prohibit new pain management clinics from locating near residential areas, schools, churches and daycare centers. The ordinance covers the unincorporated county The board approved using the uniform method of collecting for non-ad valorem special assessments for the newly created Seven K Estates Municipal Bene ts Unit. A budget workshop was set for March 27, 4 p.m. and regular commission meeting at 5 p.m. at the Courthouse. ington. You can rely on a lobbyist or you can show up, tell your own story, and get personally engaged in advancing our issues." Chapman said that with the limited resources government at all levels are experiencing, "We thought it was important to show up, look them in the eye, and take this opportunity to tell our story. We have a good story to tell about a great rural community w ith tremendous potential, with committed and engaged citizens balanced against some of our economic disadvantages and compelling needs." The Hendry group was very pleased with the reception that they received at all of their stops. Legislators and staffers were receptive and committed to advance Hendry's efforts to help diversify and grow its economy, improve transportation and create jobs. Ms. Kennington-Korf said, "Information gained during the trip to our Nation's capital was exceptional as was meeting with agencies and Congressional members and their staffs. We are following up on a number of recommendations that we expect will lead to all good things for our county. Our new Congressman, Mario Diaz-Balart, seemed particularly engaged and interested in learning more about our issues and projects so much so that he plans to visit the county in the very near future." Mr. Gillman noted that, "Business is still best performed on the face-to-face level and with no exception; each person we met with was as appreciative of us coming to meet with them as we were to have the opportunity to engage them about Hendry County issues." W ashingtonContinued From Page 1 CommissionContinued From Page 1 Information about county of ces in Clewiston was incorrect in the March 8 issue. The Supervisor of Elections Of ce and Property Appraiser's Orf ce have not moved and remain in operation at 100 E. El Paso Ave, Clewiston. We regret any inconvenience the error may have caused. A story about the proposed driving track on the old Oxbow Golf Course stated that some 20 homes would be built before the track. According to Southland Group President Paul Roberts, the rst homes, the track, clubhouse and other amenities will all be built in the rst phase. Correction Some Hendry County residents are experiencing a number of vehicle burglaries. Vehicle burglaries are most often a crime of opportunity. "Our own carelessness is often causing our vehicles to be broken into as well as stolen," said Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden. "You can minimize your chances of being a victim by taking away the opportunity," said Sheriff Whidden. Lock your vehicles and take the keys. An unlocked vehicle is an open invitation to a car theft. Clean it out, don't leave anything in it. Do not leave valuables in your car such as cellular phones or chargers, purses, wallets, lap tops, cameras, sports equipments, gunsyou get the picture. If your vehicle has an anti-theft device on it, use it. If it doesn't, consider the purchase and installation of security devices or an alarm devise to activate a siren, horn or lights to frighten the thief away. And nally, if you see or hear any suspicious activity report it to the Hendry County Sheriff's Of ce at 863-674-5600 or 863-8055000 or for crimes in progress, call 9-1-1. March 18-24 is recognized as National Poison Prevention W eek. Accidental poisoning and overdoses have been increasing and experts think that it’s the increase use of prescription pain killers, sedatives, psycho-therapeutic drugs and other narcotics that have caused this increase. Please take your medications responsibly! Be sure to read the warning labels, and ask your healthcare provider or a pharmacist if you have any questions. There are so many medications that can be dangerous if they are mixed with alcohol, certain foods or even other medications. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about any medications that you are taking, including any vitamins or over the counter medications. If you or your children are required to take any liquid medications, please use the proper measuring tool, don’t “guess”! A teaspoon from your silverware drawer is different than a regular measured teaspoon. You don’t want to accidentally give your child too much medication! Parents should make sure that all medications are out of reach not only for younger kids, but for teenagers as well. Some teenagers have overdosed on medications that were easily accessible in their parent’s medicine cabinets! All medicines should be kept in their original containers with the proper labeling and you should never share your medications! If you ever have any questions about poison prevention or information on a possible poisoning, you can call the Florida Poison Information Center Network (FPICN). The y provide emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week (1-800-222-1222). The calls are routed to one of three nationally accredited poison centers in Tampa, Jacksonville or Miami, where trained staf f can help answer your questions and manage poisoning emergencies. Ray Marti n Thank You Student Summersby Matt KindermannSummer internships for high school and college students are taking applications now. Just like adults who have to apply for a job in advance of the start date, potentially interested youths should not wait until the end of the school year to start applying for summer internships. Students are responsible for seeking out internship opportunities, much like adult job seekers have to search for job opportunities. Some internships can be found on the state’s employment website, www.employ orida. com. After registering as an individual, click on Job Search and type “internship” in the search box. Once the list appears, you can select “save this search” at the bottom of the screen and the computer will send you a noti cation when a new internship is advertised. Other internship opportunities can usually be found by accessing the website of a company that interests you, like the 20th Judicial Circuit Court or the Lee County Government, which both have current internships listed. Usually, the internships are posted on the career opportunities page along with their other open jobs. Read the description carefully as some internships are paid and some are not. Internships are mostly about job experience and less about pay, so, nd an internship that offers experience you think might bene t you in the future. The internship application process is similar to a real job and will require an interview and some form of background or reference check. Having a recently dated reference letter from a teacher or administrator will help signi cantly. Henkel’s and McCoy (H&M) is a national company that is contracted to provide youth programs to this region. H&M Summer Work Experiences (paid internships) will start to be advertised in April. However, other paid participation programs such as job shadowing and other internships are available year around from H&M for a qualifying youth between the ages of 16 and 21. by Sarah LappStage 4 cancer. A vicious monster that is embedded in Eddie Mason’s neck. A erce stigma which, by the grace of God, has not yet taken complete control. For those who are enemies with such a savage disease as this, now is your time to lend a helping hand. Mason is the Site Manager at Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church and a dearly loved member of Christ Central Church. About eight months ago, Mason felt a lump above his shoulder. He thought nothing of it until a doctor con rmed his worst fear. He undergoes intense chemotherapy and radiation in a battle to combat his cancer. He is taking immense time off of work due to his frail body. The treatments are physically, nancially and emotionally draining. Mason is in need of your aid. Here is where you and cancer go head to head. The church families of Christ Central and Carlson Memorial are rallying together for their beloved Mason. On Saturday, March 17, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. there will be a celebration fundraiser for this warrior. Come on over to Carlson Memorial on 310 Campbell Street to indulge in a blissful day. There will be face painting, a bounce house, relay races, a coin toss and other games. Pork and chicken plates (courtesy of the Methodist Men) with rolls, green beans and mac n’ cheese will be available for only $7. Also, the praise and worship bands o f both churches will be giving off a joyful noise. Along with a silent auction, there are plenty of venues to donate. And the best part? Every penny goes towards Mason’s recovery. The whole family can tag along to celebrate life, our Lord, and the amazing power of prayer. Mason is not out of the woods yet, but when a courageous body of believers stand together, it’s incredible what can happen. The LaBelle High School math team brought home a group of trophies from the Cape Coral Regional Mathematics Competition held on Saturday, March 3, at Cape Coral High School. Steven Sodrel and Junior Kippy Stansly had two hits apiece for the Cowboys. "We had numerous opportunities early in the game and just could not make it happen on offense or defense when it counted. If will make a big difference when we learn to do the little things down the stretch before districts. As usual we had a wonderful time. One Sunday in church a woman was wearing overpowering perfume. Hint: If your perfume is too strong just put some alcohol on a cotton ball and rub over it. This will save the people around you from being fumed to death. My sister’s garage is narrow. I suggested (you don’t tell your sisters to do stuff, you have to suggest) that she tack or nail carpet scraps to the walls so I can get out without banging the walls and door edges. Witch’s Brew

If you’re a cigarette smoker, chances are y ou started in your teens. The fact is nine out of 10 adult smokers began while in their teens, or earlier. Even today, more than 21,300 Florida youth, under age 18, become new smokers each year. To help prevent youth tobacco use, Hendry Tobacco-Free Partnership and Florida Department of Health’s Tobacco Free Florida are speaking up and taking action. In observance of Kick Butts Day on March 21, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids national day of activism that empowers youth to ght back against Big Tobacco, Hendry Students W orking Against Tobacco will he conducting tobacco butts clean-up at local parks, rivers and lakes. This event will highlight how cigarette butts are just as much a liter problem as bottles, cans and other rubbish. “400,000 Americans die every year from tobacco-related causes,” said Melissa Franco, President of Clewiston High School SWAT. ”The tobacco industry addicts more than 1,000 youth every day and one in three y outh will die prematurely because of their tobacco use. Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States and around the world. We know how to win the ght against tobacco. Science and experience have identi ed proven cost-effective strategies to prevent kids from smoking, help smokers quit and protect everyone from secondhand smoke. On March 21, students across Hendry County will conduct several events for the national Kick Butts Day campaign. We will work to clean tobacco liter from out local parks, rivers and lakes so that youth have safe places to have fun. Contact the Valarie James at the health department for more information or to volunteer for this event. If you are a smoker and are ready to quit you can contact Angelica Pena at Hendry Regional Medical Center for local tobacco cessation services.” Teen smoking has declined in recent years. However, 15.4 percent of high school students and 10.2 percent of middle school students in Hendry County reported current cigarette use in 2010. ”Tobacco is a very addictive and potentially dangerous drug” said Sherry Elliott, Hendry Tobacco-Free Partnership Chairperson, ”For years, the tobacco industry has marketed toward youth and have always considered them as replacement smokers. The average age that youth in Hendry County begin using tobacco is 12, which is middle school. Once a person starts using tobacco, it takes hard work and a consistent plan to break the habit. We want all youth in Hendry County to have safe and healthy environments to play and have fun.” Preventing youth tobacco use is a critical step in combating the pervasive problem of tobacco, the leading cause of disease and preventable death in Florida. More than 300,000 Florida children will ultimately die prematurely from smoking, as current data suggests. The US Army Corps of Engineers has postponed the closure date of the Moore Haven Lock after taking into consideration additional concerns expressed by local business owners. The lock will now be closed effective June 11 to install the Manatee Protection System (MPS) on the gates. The adjustment comes after local business owners expressed additional concerns about the lock being closed during the height of boating season on the Okeechobee Waterway and the resulting economic impacts. The work on the lock is expected to continue for approximately eight weeks. “Finding the optimal time to close down the lock requires a balancing act between risks and impacts,” said Jacksonville District Commander Col. Alfred Pantano Jr. “While there is no way to nd a time that will be preferred by all, we do believe that we have found the time that will allow the lock to remain open during boating season, while also allowing work to be completed prior to the height of hurricane season.” Installation of the MPS is part of the Manatee Pass Gates project. The primary goal of the project is to safeguard Florida’s endangered manatees at water control structures and navigation locks by modifying these structures with a MPS. Using a set of acoustic transmitters and receivers, the MPS detects the West Indian manatee and prevents the gates from closing and harming the protected animal. Above-ground xtures have already been installed at Moore Haven Lock. The remaining work includes dewatering the lock, installing the MPS to the lock gates, testing the system, and re-watering the lock. Additional information on this and other navigation notices impacting the Okeechobee Waterway can be found at the following website: http://www.saj.usace.army.mil / Divisions/Operations/Branches/Navigation / NavNotices.htm Additional information on the Manatee Pass Gates project is available at the following website: http://bit.ly/MPG_USACE.
