After much deliberation, Joel Williamson is announcing his campaign to run for Superintendent of Hendry County Schools, in the Republican Party. Joel has spent most of his life in Hendry County and feels he has something to contribute that can and will make a difference. Joel is the only candidate that has lived in LaBelle and Clewiston. He started his career with Hendry County Schools in 1979, as a math teacher and coach at Clewiston High School. After seven years in Clewiston, he was hired at LaBelle High School as one of the youngest head football coaches in the area. While at LHS, he developed a weight training program and helped to establish a weight room at the high school. Joel has taught Physical Education, Health and several math courses while at LaBelle and Clewiston High Schools. He was head coach of the football, baseball, basketball and track teams at LaBelle High School and later served as Athletic Director for ve years. While he was the Athletic Director, his primary emphasis was on sportsmanship. Joel Williamson is currently the site administrator for LaBelle Youth Development Academy, a school for students who have issues with attendance, behavior and/or discipline. He has developed liaisons with the Hendr y County Sheriff's Department and their School Resource Of cers, the Truancy Intervention Program, Hendry Glades Mental Health, the Department of Juvenile Justice and other programs that visit the campus to attend to the needs and issues of the student body. Joel is also an Adult School Administrator that helps to promote the GED program and the Spanish to English speaking programs. He is the pastor of Community Faith Fellowship Church. As a resident of Hendry County since 1960, Joel attended LaBelle schools and graduated from LaBelle High School in 1975. He and his wife, Jovita, have been married for 31 years and together they have served over 55 years in the educational system, all in Hendry County. They have three children; Kristel and twins Matthew and Mallory – all of whom graduated from LaBelle High School and have gone on to obtain college degrees. “Last year, several people asked me if I would run for Superintendent and I prayed long and hard about it. After serious deliberation, I knew I had the desire to give back to this community. I believe I can make a difference. I believe in the teachers and administrators in the county and know that they are working hard, with long hours and with less pay than what they made a few years ago. We are here because of our dedication to the education of our children. “I promise to have an open door policy to the parents, teachers, administrators and community members of Hendry County. I am a “people person” and I have honed my leadership and teaching skills over the years. Being a coach and site administrator, parent and pastor, I have gained experience in communication and listening skills as well as working with youth in the classroom and in athletics. I have experience in nance through running the athletic organization at LaBelle High School as well as being the site administrator at LaBelle Youth Development Academy and having had my own famil y silk screening business. I deal with all types of situations every day; with all types of people from students to parents, law enforcement, school personnel and administrators. My experience is people; people within the school system and those that support the students within that system. My favorite quote is by John C. Maxwell, “People don’t care what you know, until they know you care.” I try to put that quote into daily use and want to be given the chance to expand that to Hendry County Schools. I feel I have a unique position and insight since I have lived in both Clewiston and LaBelle. I will be a Superintendent working for both communities towards a better educational environment for our children. I will have an open door policy with a keen ear. I am, and will be, approachable and I am able to work out issues that we as a school district are facing. We can achieve a uni ed goal for both sides of the county. I will be a decisive leader who will listen and address the needs of the administrators, teachers, students and parents alike. “I would be honored if you would choose me to be the next Superintendent of Hendry County Schools. I want to create an environment that will encourage, inspire and motivate all those who are in the community of education. We can build on the progress being made by each of our schools through the hard work and dedication o f the teachers, using technology, to raise assessment scores and energize students to enable them to grasp the tools in order to develop the necessary skills to be successful in life.” WilliamsonContinued From Page 1 BirdingContinued From Page 1

Due to the windy conditions, it spread rapidly and had residents of Palm & Pines RV Park scrambling for their water hoses, as the re encroached onto several residents mobile home lots. Responders from Felda, LaBelle and Immokalee. Chief Pittman (LaBelle) and Chief Greenburg (Immokalee) were on site. Chief Greenburg told Donna Hodges, co-owner of Palm & Pines, that the re was started by exhaust from a pick-up truck coming into contact with dry grass. The truck belonged to beekeepers who were working on hives set up on the property. The property is jointly owned by Floyd Crews and Murray Canova of Immokalee. The beekeeper was ticketed. Five homes were threatened when the wind changed and started bringing the re across the barbed wire fence that separates the properties. Several residents were hosing down small res along the fence line when the wind shifted. Suddenly, looked up to see a wall of ames about 20 feet high about 10 feet from us and coming on strong. They threw down the hoses and ran for their lives. It was horrifying. The re departments were all working hard to contain this re, but as soon as one area was under control, another area amed up. Articulate and earnest Christians are posting their doubts online and in print. Thoughtful young Christian leaders admit that they wrestle with the faith and chronicle their journey for others. Talented and sincere Christian writers, openly acknowledge they struggle with the things they were taught as children. It seems that questioning what before has been considered major tenets of the Christian faith has become a badge of authenticity. It causes one to wonder, “Is doubt the new mark of a follower of Jesus?” It’s worth noting that doubt belongs in the Christian story. Gospel accounts of the resurrection include those of Jesus’ closest followers. Doubt does not—and should not— exclude us from worship. Jesus bridged the gulf of open rebellion and sin to restore relationship with humanity; a little thing like doubt won’t hold him back. The earliest Christian community followed Jesus’ example and did not reject those who struggled to believe. Expressing their doubts often is an honest attempt to settle issues in one’s own mind and trumps mindless conformity. The demand for agreement on certain points of doctrine has damaged people’s faith as much as the open confession of uncertainty. Yet doubt comes with a price. I’d like to suggest six ideas that could help anyone when asked to discuss the subject of doubt. First, doubt can be the evidence of the Holy Spirit at work. In every generation the essentials of faith become polluted with non-essentials. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is moving a new generation of believers to question whether every detail of faith is actually required by God. In every age religious expressions are infused with political, social and intellectual agendas that have no real bearing on the Kingdom of God. Second, blindly trusting anyone who hasn’t wrestled with doubt is dangerous. The person who receives the words of Jesus without any questions is someone who hasn’t really heard the words. Saul of Tarsus was a rst-rate Jewish scholar who believed he was doing God’s work by persecuting Christians. After meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus he spent three days, blind and alone, reconsidering everything he previously believed to be God’s will. If Jesus is real, everything changes. Third, don’t be confused. We seek in order to nd; sometimes we doubt in order to avoid seeking. Jesus appeared to Thomas because his doubts were reasonable; Thomas responded with the declaration, “my Lord and my God.” God invites us to seek—even to question—yet He assures us He can be found. The witness of scripture and of the centuries is that God reveals himself to those who seek him. Too many people consider doubt an impartial quality, as if doubt is somehow above the ght. Doubt is a method and has its limits. It is important to keep things balanced. Doubt is a useful tool, but a terrible destination. Fourth, doubt is not the opposite of faith. In, God in the Dark, Os Guinness says unbelief is the opposite of faith. Unbelief is the willful choice to not believe even after the questions have been answered. Doubt can spring from honesty or confusion; unbelie f springs from the will. In the nal analysis, even our intellect is called to obey. Next, remember that someone’s doubts are just that–their doubts. They don’t have to be yours. Sometimes the religious establishment can be guilty of a sti ing orthodoxy. The next generation can be guilty of demanding uncertainty of others. I might think your faith is nothing more than Christian superstition, but that does not mean I’m called to change your mind. Finally, the object of faith is a Person, not a proposition. For more than ve years I’ve loved my wife, Val. After these years I don’t pretend to understand her! How much more the unfathomable Creator? The book of Job reveals the essence of faith is relationship, not precept. I may doubt my understanding of God, but I trust I will never doubt Him. Jesus is our destination. Don’t be afraid of doubts or questioning. Be afraid of “cookie-cutter” Christianity that forces everyone to look the same, dress the same, think the same, act the same, sing the same, spend the same and even smell the same. However, when plowing through doubts, remember Jesus is the target to pursue, and His Word, the Bible is accurate.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located 200 yards behind The Front Porch restaurant on Highway 80. During the Bike games, I also had the honor of presenting the American Legion Rider’s scholarships to two of LaBelle’s nest youth. The car show was well represented with 2 blocks of cars ‘wall-to-wall’ on both sides of the street. I was also given a ‘job’, of identifying a car of distinction. Continuous entertainment kept everyone moving to the beat! I was not able to attend all of the activities. Thank you again to the Swamp Cabbage Committee for bringing together all areas of the festival. Thank you to the LaBelle City crews for both preparing LaBelle for the crowds and the major clean-up after the crowds and vendors had all gone home! It was a great festival and weekend! by Pat DobbinsSewing for the babies in our community... That’s what Elnora Funkhouser does almost every week in LaBelle. Mrs. Funkhouser sews swaddling blankets for the Hendry County Health Department’s Healthy Families program for new parents and their bundles of joy. Some of the materials are provided from funding through the United Way as well as other sources. Mrs. Funkhouser has been sewing since she was a teenager and really enjoys it. She has sewn about 50 swaddling blankets so far. She never requested nor expected any kind of reward or recognition for her sewing talents, but Judy Paskvan, Program Manager at the Hendry County Health Department decided that Mrs. Funkhouser needed to know how much she is appreciated. Mrs. Funkhouser has lived in LaBelle for about four years. She moved here from Missouri. She has one daughter that lives in Lehigh and three other children that still live in Missouri. She has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Funkhouser stated, “I wish I had learned swaddling when I was a young mother.” One of the most important reasons to swaddle your baby is to help them get good rest each and every night. If your baby is sleeping you will be able to sleep as well so swaddling is great for both of you. When babies are in the womb they are in a very small, cozy and secure place. However, upon birth they no longer have a small con ned place in which to live but rather a big open world that can be intimidating. Swaddling a baby is like giving them back the security of being in the womb all over again. For the rst few months of a babies’ life, the swaddling can keep babies arms and legs con ned to help reduce the jerk re ex. It makes it so much easier to lay a napping baby down when they are all wrapped up. Staff members from the Healthy Families Program distribute the swaddling blankets to parents who are registered in their program and teach these new parents how to swaddle their babies. Each blanket is measured 41 inches by 41 inches so that the baby can be properly swaddled. The Hendry County Health Department and the families of Hendry County would like to thank Mrs. Funkhouser and let her know they sure appreciate these lovely swaddling blankets! It doesn’t take much looking to nd folks in need who need a little hand. So, several local residents have gotten together to help them out of temporarily bad situations. Public Employees Effectively Partnering 4 Success (PEEPS) are doing a little fundraising, working anonymously through the United Way and other agencies, to identify situations where they can be of service. Already thus far PEEPS has helped someone who fell on hard times to pay their SWAFAS bill and provided a happy Christmas for two LaBelle families, with a total of six kids. Anyone who would like to help PEEPS with a donation can call Mary Jo or Lisa at 675-2872 and they will put them in touch with the organization. Church Briefs by State Representative Denise GrimsleyBridling the budgeting process in Congress seems to have become a task nearly as steep as the soaring de cits and debt strangling our nation’s economic future. The current system is as ef cient as sowing the wind and half as productive. In Florida, w e have weathered the economic storms of late without raising taxes or spending bey ond our means. Congress might do well to take a look at what states, like ours, have accomplished without breaking the bank, or buying it. What’s institutionally broken in Washington, D.C., need not stay that way, starting with three simple concepts that have become fundamental in Florida’s budgeting process: A Constitutional Requirement for a Balanced Budget. In Florida, our state constitution requires a balanced budget. For those w ho have decried that sort of provision for the U.S. Constitution, I can only point to the effective role it has played in Florida’s legislative process. Balancing our budget each year cannot be overlooked or ignored: it is a real demand that legislators who swear to uphold the state constitution must accomplish if our allegiance is true. Congress should desire that same accountability for itself. I have no doubt that the other 48 states that require a balanced budget in some form (Vermont being the exception) would gladly ratify such an amendment because they, like Florida, have seen it used as a basic tool for sensible budgeting. Public Review & Transparency. Our state constitution requires a 72-hour waiting period between the time the nal budget proposal is printed and the nal vote is taken. This is important in preventing “bridges to nowhere” and other last-minute spending projects that fail to receive the sunlight of public scrutiny. We publish our budget drafts online, with the ability to review from any internet access point. Taxpayers deserve to see exactly how their dollars are spent. In our case, it has often helped ensure budget writers do their best to develop a budget they know will withstand the scrutiny of the public eye. Streamlined and Simpli ed Budget-Writing. Should one take even a cursory glance at a congressional budgeting schematic, you would understand exactly why the federal budget is in a tailspin and our tax code mocks common sense. In both houses of Congress, there are multiple lines of authority vested in at least three major committees with innumerable subcommittees, not to mention disparate discretionary and entitlement funding streams. While in the Florida House, I can’t promise that we’ve achieved perfection, but Florida’s budget process is comparatively simple and has clear linesof-sight and simpli ed jurisdictions. That offers cohesion and encourages budgetary discipline where it matters most: in the lineitems that, one-by-one, can break or balance a budget. Sometimes institutions stop serving their purpose and start serving themselves. Congress is no exception. Without systemic reforms, the fundamentals that have sustained our Republic are at stake and our generation’s only legacy will be a debtor’s whirlwind. State Representative Denise Grimsley (R-Sebring) is the chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the Florida House of Representatives. Federal budget process reform Damien Joseph, a graphic artist employed by the National Park Service in Colorado will be conducting a two-hour intermediate/ advanced watercolor paint workshop on March 10, at 10 a.m. at the end of Seagrape Drive within the Preserve. The site is near the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center at 33000 Tamiami Trail East, Ochopee. For generations artists, through a variety of mediums, have inspired appreciation for protected areas around the world. For the past 20 years, Damien’s job has been to create original art works for exhibits, which are displayed at national parks all over the United States. Mr. Joseph is passionate about art and has a passion to teach and inspire. During his visit to South Florida Damien will also be working with students at Everglades City School. If you would like to participate in the workshop, please bring your paint set and a closable container to collect your water after painting. There won’t be an opportunity to discard it on-site. Winnie the Pooh read a book about friendship and gave tips to parents on how to read with their children. Many families took advantage of the photo opportunity that was available. The public health system does not mean county health departments alone. The public health system is de ned as the w ide range of public, priv ate and voluntary organizations such as governmental agencies, school systems, health care providers, hospitals, law enforcement, communitybased organizations, local associations, businesses and individuals. The function of this broad system framework is to work together collectively to improve the health of the community. The following diagram shows how we are all connected to each other within the local public health system: Some speci c responsibilities of the entire public health system are to: Prevent epidemics and the spread of disease Protect against environmental hazards and prevent injuries Promote and encourage healthy behaviors Assure the quality and accessibility of health services Respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery The core functions of the public health system include: Assessment: Making regular, systematic collection, assembly, analysis and distribution of information on the health of the community, including statistics on health status, community health needs and epidemiological and other studies of health problems. Policy development: Using the scienti c knowledge to assist in the decisionmaking about public health and taking a strategic approach to leadership for public health policy. Assurance: Engaging policy-makers, community partners, businesses and the public to help determine what level of services are needed in the community. There are ten essential public health services and they are derived from the speci c responsibilities and core functions which include: 1. Monitoring health status within the community 2. Diagnosing and investigating health problems and health hazards 3. Informing, educating and empowering people about health issues 4. Mobilizing community partnerships to identify and solve health problems 5. Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health 6. Enforcing laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety 7. Linking people to needed personal health services 8. Assuring a competent public health and personal health care workforce 9. The Cowgirls started the week with a home game against the Tigers from Dunbar High School and dominated from the start with strong pitching, defense and 15 runs o f offense in three innings to win by the mercy rule 15-0. Next the Cowgirls would travel to 6A Sebring for a big road game that would be a battle from the rst pitch of the game to the last pitch of the 9th inning. The Cowgirls jumped on top in the second inning when sophomore shortstop Abbie O’Ferrell blasted a double to deep left eld and then scored on two wild pitches. Sebring tied the game at one in the 6th inning and threatened to win the game in the bottom of the 7th. However, the Cowgirls would get out of the jam with tight defense behind pitcher Gennifer Raulerson, highlighted by freshman second baseman Beatriz Cardoza throwing out the potential winning run at home, with junior catcher Elainee Marroquin hanging in tough to apply the tag on Blue Streak center elder Danielle Lower to save the game. The girls came out red up in the ninth inning. Beatriz Cardoza was hit by a pitch from Blue Streak pitcher Haley Pack and advanced to second when the Streaks’ catcher attempted a pickoff and the throw went into right eld. Sophomore Rachael Reinbott then sacri ced Cardoza to third to set up Elainee Marroquin, who promptly lined a single to left plating Cardoza. Abbie O’Ferrell would then step to the plate and drive in Marroquin with her second double and third hit of the night. The Cowgirls stopped the Streaks’ offense in the bottom of the ninth with the score 3-1. Cowgirls Coach Raymond Marroquin said after the game that this was a “total team win.” The Cowgirls will be at home twice this week with games on Tuesday against Clewiston and Thursday against Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. Cowgirls dominate one, battle for other Submitted photo/ Bill WarrenSCF top shermenPictured is the 2012 SCF Fishing tournament winning team of Markley and Riley.
