Most people don’t understand what public health is or how it impacts their daily lives. By de nition, Public Health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of a community, as by prev entative medicine, health education, control of communicable diseases, application of sanitary measures and monitoring of environmental hazards. Many people think of the Public Health Department when they need to get immunizations for their children and family, but public health is a eld geared toward serving others. Public health professionals serve local, national, and international communities. They are leaders who meet the many exciting challenges in protecting the public’s health today and in the future. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named the ten greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. Ten Great Public Health Achievements -United States, 1900-1999 Vaccination. Eradicates life threatening diseases such as smallpox and polio Motor-vehicle safety. Reduces death and disability due to unintentional injuries through the formulation of policies designed to protect the safety of the public, such as seat belt and worker safety laws Safer workplaces and prevents pollution of our air and land through enforcement of regulatory controls and management of hazardous wastes Control and prevention of infectious diseases (Measles, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, etc.) Decline in deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke. Promotes healthy lifestyles to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes Safer and healthier foods. Healthier mothers and babies Family planning. Educates populations at risk to reduce sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy and infant mortality Fluoridation of drinking water and assures our drinking and recreational waters are safe Recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard Seatbelt laws, u vaccines and uoride in our drinking water are all achievements o f public health. Public health debates are in the news everyday, whether it be the latest outbrea k of swine u or the eradication of trans-fats from entire cities. The vision of the Florida Department o f Health is to “Promote, protect, and improve the health of all people in Florida” and their mission is “A healthier future for the people of Florida.” Stop and think about what Public Health has done for you and the possibilities o f what it can do for you in the future. Public health: What does it mean to you? The “Memory Bus” one of the Alzheimer Association’s initiatives and it is a mobile clinic that is open to anyone who is concerned about their memory or that of a family member or friend. The vehicle is an innovative way of bringing the issues of memory loss and dementia to the public and it has travelled county wide. It is a simple test and takes a few minutes. The idea is to detect the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s. It is not only for seniors but for people of all ages. No appointments are necessary. The memory bus will be available at the following Hendry County Health Department Locations February 27, 2012 Time: 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m Hendry County Health Department 1140 Pratt Blvd, Labelle, Fl 33935 February 28, 2012 Time: 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Hendry County Health Department 1100 S Olympia Street, Clewiston, Fl 33440 According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 14 people over the age of 65 has some form of dementia and that number can increase to 1 in 6 for those over the age of 80. Early diagnosis and care for people with dementia, as well as educating those that care for them, is one of the strategic priorities for improving a person’s health and wellbeing. Memory problems can be common as people get older. Tiredness, stress, depression and certain medications can all affect memory. The important thing is for people to see k help if they have any concerns about memory loss. This event will allow people to talk, in con dence, with an expert. For more information, the national number is 1-800-2723900 for Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer Association Memory Bus coming W-2 Woes by Matt KindermannJanuary 31st was the employer deadline for mailing 2010 W-2’s as set by the IRS. If you have not yet received a W-2, don’t get too worried yet. You still have until April 17 to le your return or le for an extension. Typically, the deadline for federal tax returns is April 15. However, this year the 15th falls on a Sunday and the 16th is Emancipation Day in Washington D.C., so everyone gets two extra days to le. If you have not yet received a W-2, the rst step is to contact the employer. Because some employers have gone out of business, or relocated, start with calling the phone numbers you have, use the phone book or look up the employer on www.YellowPages.com. Other sites that have business listings are the Better Business Bureau at www. bbb.org and www.freeerisa.com. If you are able to get in touch with the employer, be patient and allow a reasonable amount of processing time to receive a W-2 in the mail. If you still have not received your W-2’s, or cannot locate a defunct employer, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and be prepared to give your name, address, phone number, dates of employment and an estimate of your wages for the period missing. The estimated wages are important as we will discuss later. The IRS will instruct you to ll out a Form 4852, which can be found at www. irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4852.pdf. This form is a W-2 substitute which you will ll out and submit with your tax returns as you would a regular W-2. If using a Form 4852, your refund may take a little longer to be returned to you as your reported wages are being veri ed. If you receive your W-2’s after you have already submitted your Federal tax returns, you will have to le an amendment using a Form 1040X, which can be found at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf. If the reported wages on your W-2’s are signi cantly different from what you estimated, you may nd yourself either receiving the positive difference in the refund, or paying the negative difference. They are very proud to announce that they now have available Pixel Optics' revolutionary emPower! eyeglasses, the world's first electronic focusing prescription eyewear. They are the first and currently the only vision care practitioners in Hendry County to offer this new technology. The eyeglasses feature composite lenses with a thin transparent LCD-like layer, microchips, micro-machine accelerometers and miniature rechargeable batteries. With all this they have the same weight, feel and look of your everyday high fashion eyewear designs. The eyewear cost about $1,350 for a complete pair, which includes the frame, lenses, coatings, and all electronic components including a charger. "We are happy to offer our patients this cutting edge vision correction option. Bifocals or the reading power in progressive lenses often interfere with daily activity. Walking up and down steps is a perfect example. Being able to turn the reading power off to reduce it is a real breakthrough," says Drs' Parrish and Youmans. The microchip, micro-accelerometers, and miniature batteries are hidden discreetly in the temples of the frames. The transparent liquid crystal layer in each lens is able to electronically change and activate the near focus zone of the lens only when needed without making a sound or change in the appearance of the lens. Just touch the frame to adjust your view, or set it to do it automatically. emPower! offers instant, automatic vision correction for all ranges of sight, less distortion and wider fields of view compared to a traditional progressive lens. This gives you unprecedented control over you vision! Wearers can choose to operate the eyeglasses in three different modes: manual on, automatic and manual off. emPower! is shock resistant and waterproof. One charge of the battery allows operation for two to three days of use. Stop by the optical at Family Eye Care and let Tom, Natalie or Tracy give you a no obligation demonstration. No appointment necessary. Office hours are Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00, except Thursday 7:30-7:00. Today we’ll discuss memory and how increasing your system’s memory can often be the best upgrade you can perform. To begin, let’s distinguish between storage and memory because it is easy to confuse the two. When we talk about memory, w e’re talking about RAM Random Access Memory. The memory in your system is inserted into special slots on your computer motherboard. RAM chips are measured in megabytes or gigabytes. When we talk about storage, we’re talking about your hard drive. The hard drive is w here you save documents, settings, game scores, etc... Additionally, your operating system (Windows/Mac/Linux) is also on the hard drive. Hard drive capacities are measured in gigabytes. Getting more RAM into your system is a great way to increase performance, especially if you typically do many things at the same time when at your computer. Every time you launch a program like a word processor, spreadsheet program, internet browser etc..., the program is loaded into RAM. The more RAM you have, the more quickly programs will launch. The faster programs launch, the faster you’ll be able to interact with them. The amount of RAM your system can accommodate is dependent upon the motherboard manufacturer’s speci cations. If you have a name brand computer, the manufacturer’s website may be able to tell you what types and how much RAM your system came w ith as well as how you can maximize the amount of RAM in the system. Upgrading RAM is not dif cult but it does require you to work directly with the hardw are of your computer yes, that means inside the ‘box’. As always, if you have questions or are in doubt, contact a quali ed computer technician. That’s it for this edition of Computer Corner. Remember if you have questions or comments, please email computercorner@ cprtools.net. Who knows? Altamonte Springs, Fl — Florida Nature Conservancy Scientist Kris Serbesoff-King called the drastic loss of common mammals in the Everglades due to Burmese pythons, reported by the Florida Academy of Sciences, “really scary” and worries about the repercussions for all wildlife and for Everglades restoration. The Nature Conservancy not only trains responders through the Python Patrol to capture pythons in an effort to contain the spread but is also working with national partners to develop U.S. policies designed to fend off the next big invasion. “Right now imported species are innocent until proven guilty,” Serbesoff-King said. “As a nation, we need to focus on preimportation screening -that is to say looking at what will likely be a small number of non-native imported wildlife that could go on to be harmful to the lands and waters life depends on.” Nature Conservancy scientists for years have been working on “risk assessments” for plants and animals coming into the U.S., a series of questions that determines an import’s probable impact on native species. It’s already been shown with plants that accurate results are possible with little interruption to trade. “For example, the U.S. Department of A griculture has just started in the right direction for plants,” she said. “There is no prescreening right now for wildlife.” The Florida Academy of Sciences report, called The Effect of Burmese Pythons on the Mammals of South Florida, was released Monday. “Prevention is critical as this report clearly shows,” Serbesoff-King said. “We have to gure out what the next Burmese python could be. Unfortunately, it might already be out there.” The Nature Conservancy is a leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. To date, the Conservancy and its more than one million members have been responsible for the protection of more than 18 million acres in the United States and have helped preserve more than 117 million acres in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific. We now sell New and Used Tires Plus we do Computerized Wheel AlignmentsWelcome to the 46th Annual Swamp Cabbage Festival And were celebrating 20 years of business in LaBelle! 12 Caloosa Belle February 23, 2012 by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle This year’s SCF Grand Marshal seems to be everywhere. A quick glimpse at most community events will reveal that Nikki Yeager is not only there, but she is likely providing a very capable helping hand. A registered nurse and active real estate broker, Nikki has an extensive background in business, having been director, dorm mom and trainer of the Texas Summer Gymnastics Camp and teacher/coach of gymnastic clinics and workshops throughout the Southwestern US. She was director and half owner of private gymnastics clubs in Texas from 1972-86. She also served as president of Gymnastics Association of Texas from 1984-85 and was installed in the Texas Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1991. In Florida, she turned her talents toward real estate and has been devoting many hours to civic activities. For instance, she has used her RN experience to help the elderly w ith their medications and helped many change their bandages as well as transported those who are alone and in need. She has circled Aqua Isles Mobile Home Community daily, tossing newspapers from the grass or street onto porches for the elderly so they don’t have to use their steps. This special lady attributes her participation in so many activities to her high energy level. “It’s what keeps me going the way I am,” she explained. She continues by saying that money has never been a prime motivator for her. “I just see what needs to be done, and I do it.” Nikki is a natural born organizer. Case in point – the recent American Legion Community Christmas dinner that served over 600 holiday meals on Christmas Day. Nikki organized the routes for delivering the meals and soon had things humming along. Her favorite activities, though, are the ones where she can get her hands in the dirt. As a member and past president of the LaBelle Garden Club, Nikki has helped beautify many areas, including the City of LaBelle, Aqua Isles and Bob Mason Park. Her favorites are the bromeliads, she said, because they’re so easy and so colorful. Her love of plants inspired her to plant and landscape all around the City of LaBelle. She even arranged with Ace Hardware to donate aging and excess plants for her to distribute to those who would like to have them. Bob Mason Park on the north side of the Caloosahatchee is a much cheerier place because of the beauti cation project Nikki helped with. She even trained and became certi ed as an Emergency First Response Team member, again as a Registered Nurse. A transplant from Texas, Nikki didn’t take her time about jumping into LaBelle activities. She just rolled up her sleeves and got to know other folks who make good things happen. Nikki credits her mother with raising her to be independent and to understand that she “can do anything she wants to.” Mostly, for Nikki, that means putting out the effort to be of help and to encourage others to do what they can for the community. As an active member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 130, Nikki helps prepare meals and routings for Christmas deliveries. Nikki’s love of children and animals inspired her participation in many Barron Park activities for children and her support for the Caloosa Humane Society for homeless and abused animals. This newly-chosen Grand Marshal is no stranger to the Swamp Cabbage Festival, having worked at many festivals, including providing service to the Pioneer Families and Dignitaries. In addition to her other civic activities, Nikki has been a Kiwanian, serving a term as president and as a director. She is active in all its charitable and scholarship efforts. Her big heart has also led her to be major participant in planning the annual Relay For Life, funding research for cancer. She has assisted with planning for the annual Chamber and other nonpro t dinners. She has a long association and involvement with LaBelle Woman’s Club and has been active with the LaBelle Heritage Museum, serving as a volunteer hostess when needed; and has been a major contributor to the Old Timers Dinners and its booklet. Nikki has even been an active volunteer with the Firehouse Community Theatre and in the Gourmet Dining Club where she assists in scheduling the rotating gatherings. City and county affairs have not escaped her notice and she keeps abreast of what’s happening through the many meetings she attends. As his primary caregiver, she has even taken up the mantel for her signi cant other, Paul Roser, in many Rotary Club events, spaghetti dinners for schools, Nature Par k cleanups, etc., as his health is failing. The time is short, though, for Nikki to share her considerable talents with LaBelle. She and partner Paul Roser are packing up to begin a tour in a big motor coach. The y plan to travel around, visiting relatives and friends they haven’t seen for quite a while. Still, they’re not completely breaking their ties. They plan to keep in touch via computer and expect to visit LaBelle now as snowbirds while staying active in real estate. It may be time for a change for Nikki and Paul, but this 2012 SCF Grand Marshal has surely left her mark on LaBelle and its residents’ hearts. 2012 Parade Grand Marshal is Nikki Yeager

13 Caloosa Belle February 23, 2012 Some men will recall the luxury of going to an old fashioned barber, others may only be familiar with it through old movies. Nathan’s Barber Cuts, located at 455 W. Hickpochee Ave, across from the Log Cabin in the old Goodwill store, is bringing back that special feeling. Nathan Powers is well-known as a longtime LaBelle barber. He is opening his own barber shop again, Nathan’s Barber Cuts, along with Rick Pope, combining their skills to give you a pleasurable barber experience. Nathan has 17 years experience and Rick has 13. Nathan learned the business from his father, Frank Powers, a master barber in LaBelle for many years. In fact, he is a link back to the good old ways his dad taught him. Nathan is one of the few barbers anywhere who can still give you an impeccable at top, freehand. He’s also proud to say that he can “ x anything,” so if you have a hair disaster, go see what Nathan can do for you. Many will recognize Rick from local shops. Nathan said Rick has superb and precise cutting skills and is a specialist in oldfashioned hot shaves with a straight razor. The shop offers $3 off on any style cut for senior citizens. And get this Nathan’s Barber Cuts is the only shop in town that offers shampoos. Nathan invites old and new customers to come in for the “ nest master barber cuts in the area.” At Nathan’s all cuts are vacuum cuts. Nathan’s Barber Cuts is open M-F 8-6, Saturday 8-3. Just come on in and take a seat no appointment necessary. Nathan’s Barber Cuts open for business Caloosa Belle/ Dale ConyersRick Pope and Nathan Powers will be opening Nathan’s Barber Cuts. From the early 1900s and into the 21st Century, the Edwin and Lydia O’Bannon Family has held fast to the determination and community spirit that has marked its success. Missouri brothers Frank, Albert and Edw in had been looking for a place with a better future for their families and they found it right here. Edwin and his wife, Lydia, came to LaBelle in 1914. It was the right place for Frank’s sawmill. It was the right place for Albert’s medical practice and it was the right place for Edw in to raise his family. The fourth brother, Phannon, came for a while but never took to Florida the way the others did A jack of all trades, Edwin worked as a farmer, grader operator, became a foreman w ith the State Road Dept. and for a while w as a truck driver for a prison near the intersection of SR 80 and Ft. Denaud Road. It was Edwin who left the deepest impression on his adopted town. He was elected to the school board in 1926 and appointed Town Marshal in 1930. He preached at various churches and was a longtime member of the Methodist Church. Brother Albert was known as the “praying doctor” and some of the O’Bannon family were founders of the LaBelle Church of God. All the O’Bannon children attended LaBelle schools and have continued their family’s contributions to the community. In 1923 Frank’s son, Herbert, was an inspector in the rst election held in the newly formed Hendry County. Thelma, born in 1924 to Edwin and Lydia, graduated from LaBelle High School in 1941 and got a job at Riddle Field in Clewiston, where British cadets were trained for the war raging in Europe and the South Paci c. Her brother, Ralph, also worked at the base. Their sister, Irene, went to Georgia to work in a naval plant making ammunition. Lloyd had returned to Missouri but joined the Merchant Marines when the war started. Irene and Lloyd both eventually returned to LaBelle and remained here until their deaths. Mavis and Herbert also entered the service of their country. Paul’s sawmill was considered vital to the war effort and his wife, Oddis, opened the Courtview Restaurant catering to workers and servicemen from nearby bases. Paul was also a rancher, grew citrus and was a minister. In fact, military service goes back a long way in the O’Bannon family. Presley Neville O’Bannon served in the Marines during the First Barbary War. According to Wikipedia, “During the combined operations with the U.S. Navy, he led the successful attack in the Battle of Derna on April 27, 1805, giving the Marines’ Hymn its line ‘to the shores of Tripoli’.” A sword presented to him by Prince Hamet Karamanli was the model for the dress sword still warn by US Marines. Three naval vessels have been named in Presley O’Bannon’s honor. Phannon was involved in building the Herbert Hoover Dike around Lake Okeechobee. He eventually returned to Missouri. Herbert worked for EE Goodno before going of f to the war. When he returned he became Mr. Goodno’s assistant supervisor. Ralph was also in the citrus business. Many of the O’Bannon descendants still live in the LaBelle area and have contributed to the growth and well being of this community. Although some left to attend college or pursue careers, many returned to teach or open businesses. The O’Bannon family has been a vital part of LaBelle for almost 100 years. The O’Bannon brothers came to LaBelle looking for a better life for their families. In return, they helped make LaBelle a better place for all who came after them. 23 Caloosa Belle February 23, 2012 by Jerri Lynn MerrittThe LHS Cowgirls softball team had a w eek of comebacks and missed opportunities. The rst game of the week pitted the Cowgirls against the Golden Gate High Titans at Cowgirl Field. The Cowgirls fell behind early 1-0 after a triple by the Titans lead off hitter and an RBI groundout. Gennifer Raulerson then settled in and got the next two outs to limit the damage. The Cowgirls would bounce back in the bottom of the second with a single by Racheal Reinbott, followed by a booming double to the left eld wall off the bat of Elainee Marroquin, that would score Reinbott and tie the game at 1-1. A couple of hits by the Titans and some shoddy defense by the Cowgirls would allow the Titans to retake the lead 3-1 in the bottom of the third. However, the Cowgirls would not quit as they held the Titans and scored a run in the fth and three in the sixth. Big hits from several Cowgirls including Sidney Nunez, Andrea Lutkenhaus and Abbie O'Ferrell captured the lead for good at 5-3. For their next game the Cowgirls would travel to Arcadia to take on last year's region champions and state nalist Desoto Bulldogs Thursday night. The Cowgirls jumped out to an early lead over the Bulldogs after a single to right center from Gennifer Raulerson, a walk by Beatriz Cardoza and an RBI by Racheal Reinbott. The Bulldogs then took the lead 3-1 in the bottom of the rst inning on a two-run homerun and an error. The score would stay 3-1 until the bottom of the 6th when the Bulldogs pushed across three more runs. The Cowgirls never let up, though, and scored two more runs of their own in the top of the 7th with RBI's from Cory Taylor and Andrea Lutkenhaus. It would not be enough as the game would end with Cowgirl runners on second and third with the nal score 6-3. The Cowgirls' record is now 3-1 and they were to host Dunbar on Tuesday before traveling to Sebring on Thursday night.
