The Foundation for Hendry County Public Schools recently recognized the Golden Apple Teachers of Year for all ten Hendry County Schools. A team of judges interviewed all ten Golden Apple winners and selected Nan Akin as the District winner. Nan is a graduate of LaBelle High School, Edison Community College, Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast University. She has taught for 14 years at LaBelle High and currently teaches Advance Placement Geography and World Geography. Her involvement at LaBelle High also includes serving as a STEM Leader, Freshman Class Sponsor, Lead Teacher and she is on the Literacy Council, NHS Advisory Committee, AVID Site Team and Mentor Teaching Program. Nan said that the most memorable accomplishment in her teaching thus far was the class trip to Washington in 2008. She took ten students to the last Presidential Inauguration in Washington. More than 1 million attended the last Inauguration, so she was relieved to bring all of her students back safely. She went to the Presidential Inauguration as a high school student and it shaped who she is today. She added that the kids were amazing on the trip and the y watched democracy in action. She said this country has set the example for leaders taking power and leaving positions of power peacefully and with respect for over 200 years. We watched in foot-numbing weather while our 44th President, Barac k Obama took of ce. What most kids watched on TV, her students were able to experience rsthand. She loves Washington, D.C. and sharing that with students is priceless. EveryAkin honored as Teacher of the Year Rose Raulerson-Mason is very excited to announce her candidacy for the of ce of Hendry County Supervisor of Elections. She has two children and three grandchildren, and is very family oriented. She raised her children in Hendry County, and now her grandchildren are growing up here as well. She enjoys singing, attending church and spending quality time with her family and friends. For the past four and a half years she has held the position of manager at Maple Corner MHP, LLC; a 55+ retirement community. Her career background includes experience in banking, real estate and various management positions. She holds a current Florida Real Estate license. She feels the diversi cation in her work experience is one of her strong points. She said she has worked her way up in many of those positions and can appreciate the importance of Rose Mason announces candidacy for Supervisor of Elections Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantTeacher of the Year Nan Akin is surrounded by some of her ninth grade students. Rose is con dent that, if elected, she can "quickly get up to speed" as Supervisor of Elections. She said she's a hands-on learner w ith many learning experiences in her life. She sees herself as a very strong woman; a survivor! "Yes, I perceive this as a challenge, but I love a challenge! Life's challenges are w hat keeps you strong and focused! It's w hat makes you who you are! I have no doubt that I can do the job and I know I can make a difference!" Rose attributes her strong work ethics to her parents; the late Hardy Raulerson and Ms. Jincey Raulerson, of LaBelle. "My parents worked hard their whole lives, and as a result, this good quality is instilled in me. I am very grateful to my parents for that, among many other great qualities they instilled in me. I couldn't have asked for better examples!" She feels one of her greatest quali cations is her honest sincerity, when it comes to caring about people and about Hendry County. She is anxious to get to know all residents of Hendry County, from all age groups, including those not yet of voting age. "Our future voters," she refers to them as. "Let's educate them when they are y oung, so when they reach voting age, they understand the voting process. They need to fully realize the importance of having a part in choosing who runs our county, as well as our country," she says. During her campaign Ms. Mason says, "I look forward to reaching out to the community and I want to encourage everyone of all origins, to exercise their right and privilege to vote! Each and every individual needs to realize how important his or her vote is!" As Supervisor of Elections, Rose says one of the things she would like to change here in Hendry County is the fact that many registered voters don't actually turn out to vote. She says, "In addition to encouraging people to become a registered voter, I would also focus on registered voters that haven't been active for a while, encouraging them to actually show up at the polls and cast their vote. In my opinion, these are two of the main focal points of this of ce. I would like to see improvement in both areas!" She wants people to realize that voting is a simple process and declares, "I'll be there to help you. Let your voice be heard!" The candidate said, "Having the opportunity to serve Hendry County would be a "dream come true" for me! I have always been an honest, hard working individual and I have so much to offer our community. It would be an honor to serve Hendry County and to be able to make a difference. I know there are many voices that need to be heard in our county and I am listening! I would appreciate your vote and I look forward to getting acquainted and reacquainted with everyone in our county. I welcome your calls and e-mails. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments." When she rst started teaching, she said she thought she'd try it out for a year but once she went through that door, she never left. Nan's average summer includes trying to learn something new under her certi cation and she is looking forward to earning a Masters degree one day. Nan is not afraid of failure. In fact, she says she's always xing things that didn't go right. She said she'd like to erase her rst three years of teaching but she learned so much from it. Now she said the schools have a good induction program that would have helped her. Her students are thrilled that she's the Teacher of the Year. Student Beatriz Cardoza said, "She cares about the students. cares about their day. And she doesn't stop going over something till we get it." The students are enthusiastic in their approval. They appreciate her smiles and said she backs up her geography lessons with her own travel experience. Ninth grader Michael Martinez simply said, "She's the best." For Nan the best part of the award, she said, "Is making my parents proud." Her favorite quote is "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and will never be." Thomas Jefferson. Nan remembers the warm welcome she received 14 years ago upon returning to LaBelle to teach school. She appreciates all the support from her family, administration and colleagues have given her to be a success. Nan will represent the Hendry Count y School District in the 2013 Florida Department of Education/Macy's Teacher of The Year Competition. One of the 67 counties' District Teachers of The Year will be selected as Florida's Teacher of The Year for 2013. Nan is the daughter of Susan and Scott Cooper and the wife of Daniel Akin. She is also the mother of two boys Drayton and Grayson Akin. PC: Of ce Offenses by Matt KindermannPolitical Correctness, or PC, is not just a fancy term to describe a perception of unjusti ed fairness or the act of overlooking an otherwise unappealing personal trait. PC is what is expected of employees and employers in the workplace to ensure that everyone is treated with equality. This week we will look at the most common PC blunders that could cause you some heartache at work. First, remember that no matter how little authority your boss has in the big scheme of things, or how much more quali ed you "think" you are, your boss is still your boss. Never criticize your boss in public, on your Facebook account or to your co-workers. You don't have to be a sycophant but there is a ne line between opinion and criticism; err on the side of attery. Never turn down an offer from upper management. If a manager asks you to take a position in another town, ask how soon you can pack up your desk! If you decline offers for promotion, even if they don't translate into better working conditions or pay, you may not get another. Second, never bypass the boss or "supervisor shop." Keep the boss in the loop if you have to communicate with others outside the of ce. It's easier to CC your boss on an e-mail than to have to later explain what you did and why. Writing an embarrassing or strongly worded e-mail is forever and will haunt you. Any IT department can nd e-mails on the company system that you have deleted and forgotten about. If you feel it necessary to write a nasty-gram, save it as a draft and sleep on it. You may have second thoughts about sending it when you return to the of ce in the morning. Lastly, be tactful in your communication and self-presentation. Just as you wouldn't criticize your boss, don't be critical of those you work with. Making inappropriate jokes or otherwise suffering from "foot in mouth disease," will require an immediate and sincere apology. If your workplace has a dress code, abide by it and avoid dressing too informally or even too formally over what your co-workers are wearing. Some individualism is alright unless there is a standard uniform, but limit obvious culturally symbolic articles. For more career advice, contact a career representative nearest you by going to www.sw works.org and click on "Locations." Love is the greatest of all virtues. Paul speci cally af rmed this to be true when he, when speaking of spiritual love, stated, "love always trusts" (1 Cor. 13:7). That means love always believes the best in others and seeks to bring out the best in them. I appreciate the Moffatt translation. It reads, "love is always eager to believe the best." It's easy to think the worst, but love believes the best. Someone asked Henry Ford who was his best friend. Without hesitating, the auto maker said emphatically, "My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me." Karl Downs was a Methodist preacher in Oakland, California. Unfortunately, Rev. Downs died of a heart attack when he was still quite young. Several years before passing away, he was asked by the Juvenile Court to take responsibility for a young man who was always getting into trouble. Downs accepted the responsibility and became a what one might refer to as a "Godfather" to the troubled youngster. While you may not know who Karl Downs is, I am con dent you know who the young boy is -Jackie Robinson. But there would probably have never been a Jackie Robinson if there hadn't been a Karl Downs. That is because love always believes the best in others and seeks to bring out the best in them. Writing in an issue of for Focus on the Family magazine author Stu Weber illustrates the need for a Christian "buddy" to help us survive the tough times. He tells about an event that happened in 1967. A grizzled old noncom at Fort Benning, Ga. taught the soul-buttressing impact of "mutual mentoring to a formation of ramrod-straight troops. The message was clear: "Never go into battle alone!" The war in Vietnam was building to its peak, and one stop for young army of cers was the U.S. Army Ranger School at Fort Benning. The venerable, steely-eyed veteran told us the next nine weeks would test out mettle as it had never been tested. The sergeant said many wouldn't make the grade--it was just too tough. Turned out he was right. Of 287 in the formation that day, only 110 nished the nine weeks. Weber writes, "I can still hear that rasp y voice cutting through the morning humidit y like a serrated blade. We are here to save your lives," he preached. "We're going to see to it that you overcome all your natural fears--especially of height and water. We're going to show you just how much incredible stress the human mind and body can endure. And when we're nished with you, you will be the U.S. Army's best. You will not only survive in combat, you will accomplish your mission!" Then, before he dismissed the formation, the hardened Ranger sergeant announced our rst assignment. We'd steeled ourselves for something really tough -running 10 miles in full battle gear or rappelling down a sheer cliff. So the noncom's rst order caught us of f guard. He told us to nd a buddy. Some of us would have preferred the cliff. "This is step one," he growled. "You need to nd yourself a Ranger buddy. You will stick together. You will never leave each other. You will encourage each other, and, as necessary, you will carry each other. It was the Army's way of saying, "Dif cult assignments require a friend. Together is better. You need someone to help you accomplish the tough course ahead." So, believe the best about others and help bring out the best in them. They will need you. And, you will be surprised how you, too, will need that person. God has put great potential in every person. Sometimes all it takes is a little trust and encouragement to bring out that greatness.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle. The church is located 200 yards behind The Front Porch restaurant on Highway 80. IV Sec. 20 5 Caloosa Belle February 16, 2012 Marroquin's Learning Center would like to let the community know that the Literacy Buddy Program does work for young Children. The center has been in this program for three years and the children really get happy and learn to read when they receive new books. (Books of their own.) it saddened the children and teachers recently when one of their Book Buddies passed away Mr. Robert Roper,. Just before his passing he gave one of our V.P.K. children by the name of "THE BEARS" and in honor of him, Marroquin's is going to donate a book by the same name "THE BEARS" to the LaBelle Library in memory of him. Mr. Robert Roper will always be remembered in our center. We will post the book in our class with his name on it for all the children who are attending our center now and in the future can read it. It takes very special people to be in the Literacy Buddy Program. This program is where people will donate books to a child in a center to keep as their own. This helps the child with early literacy. And I want to thank the LaBelle community for being part of this program. If you would like to be a Literacy Buddy in our area you can call the Early Learning Coalition for more information. We here at Marroquin's Learning Center would like to thank Mr. Roper for the great job. The children will bene t from all the great books he gave us. Forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace. Dir. Andrew Jean-Baptist had a game high 17 points while Tanner Zoitvogel had 14 and Braxton Ford had 14. The score was much closer than anticipated with the Cowboys pulling away the last quarter and a half. The Cowboys also got key minutes from Sophomore Mark Sloan and Junior Ellis Johnson on the boards. The win moved the Cowboys to 15 and 12 for the season. The following night matched the Cowboys against the number sixth ranked Bishop Verot Vikings. LaBelle started slow and nished slow. The Cowboys could not handle the Vikings' inside game. Braxton Ford nished with a game high 25 points and topped the 1,000 point mark. The 1,000 point mar k has been topped in recent years by only a fe w Cowboys. Former Cowboy and FGCU stand out Chad Lutkenhaus, Kyle Chapman and Eric Tolar were the last Cowboys to reach this milestone. Braxton will be playing in the NIIKE Invitational at St. Thomas University on March 11 vs. the Palm Beach County AllStars. Braxton will be one of only a hand full of Southwest Florid a players to attend. Cowboys season ends as Ford scores 1,000th point The LHS Cowgirls softball team got the 2012 season started in a good way last week with wins over two tough opponents in Glades Day and Sebring. Tuesday night was opening night for the LaBelle Cowgirls softball team and they did not disappoint as they got a close 2-0 win against the Glades Day Gators. The team used pitching, defense and timely hitting to get the win over a tough Gator team. Gennifer Raulerson threw a complete game shutout with help from her defense, highlighted by great catches in the out eld by senior Ashley Cruz and freshman Logann White. The Cowgirls hit the ball well all night but both runs scored in the third inning when Cory Taylor got one of her two hits, stole second then advanced to third on a base hit by Gennifer Raulerson. Both players would then score on a sacri ce y by Beatriz Cardoza and an errant throw by the Glades Day catcher. Game two of the season was against the Sebring Blue Streaks on Friday night in front of a big crowd at Cowgirl Field and once again the Cowgirls came out on top. This was a game of pitching and defense as the two teams combined for just four hits. Abbie O'Ferrell's fth inning single would be the only hit for the Cowgirls but the third inning would again be big. After walking the bases loaded the Sebring pitcher sailed a wild pitch to the backstop allowing the rst run off the game. Then a pop y by Beatriz Cardoza was dropped allowing a second run. That would be all the runs they would need as Cowgirl pitcher Gennifer Raulerson went on to give up just three hits and no walks, surrendering just one run to the Blue Streaks as the Cowgirls would go on to win 2-1. After hosting Golden Gate Monday, Feb. 13, the Cowgirls will travel to Desoto County High on Thursday. Softball opens season with pair of wins Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantGreat way to start a seasonOn February 6 the Cowboys baseball team came together over a shared meal provided by the Gathering of Christian Men. The meal is another of the group’s ministries to young men, which includes feeding the football team. Along with the entire team, the Cowboys’ captains Austin Garcia, Bo Meador and Steven Sodrel were very appreciative of the effort these men are extending on their behalf. All three of these young men have played ball together since Little League. A junior, Austin commented, “I like baseball because its a combination of an individual and a team sport.” He plays third base, rst base and pitcher and plans to go to extend his ball career at college. Austin is a fan of the Rangers and Yankees. Bo is the Cowboy catcher. This senior is headed for Florida Southern. He also plans to play college ball when he graduates from LHS, but he’s not interested in going pro. He said he intends to learn about the chemical business and go into agribusiness with his dad’s company. Steven is also a senior and, like the others, plans to play ball in college. He handles pitcher and out eld positions for the Cowboys and is a fan of the Rangers and Phillies. As for going pro, Stevens said, “I’m going to see how far baseball will take me.” On behalf of their teammates, all three wanted to express their appreciation to the Gathering of Christian Men for their thoughtfulness and support. by Pat DobbinsAccording to the Centers for Disease Control & Prev ention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. A bout every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary (heart) event and about one every minute will die from one. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Hendry and Glades Counties. Here are a few tips to help you to become “heart healthy” Eat a healthy diet. Choosing healthier meals and snacks can help you avoid heart disease and its complications. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eating foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in ber can help prevent high blood cholesterol. Limiting salt or sodium in your diet can also lower your blood pressure. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overw eight or obese can increase your risk for heart disease. To determine whether your w eight is in a healthy range, healthcare prov iders often calculate a number called the body mass index (BMI). Sometimes your w aist and hip measurements are used to measure your excess body fat. Exercise regularly. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower your cholesterol and blood pressure. It is suggested that adults should engage in moderate-intensity exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. Quit smoking or don’t start smoking. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. So, if you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quitting will lower your risk for heart disease. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways you can quit smoking. Limit alcohol use. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can cause high blood pressure. Prevent or Treat Your Medical Conditions: If you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes, there are steps you can take to lower your risk for heart disease. Have your cholesterol checked. Your health care provider should test your cholesterol levels regularly. Talk with your healthcare provider about this simple blood test. Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked on a regular basis. Manage your diabetes. If you have diabetes, closely monitor your blood sugar levels. Talk with your health care provider about treatment options. Take your medications. If you’re taking medication to treat high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. Always ask questions if you don’t understand something. Talk with your health care provider. You and your healthcare provider can work together to prevent or treat the medical conditions that lead to heart disease. Discuss your treatment plan regularly and bring a list of questions to your appointments. Know your signs and symptoms. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, however, most heart attacks start slowly and you may only feel mild pain or discomfort. Many people aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening: Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort. Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or light headedness. A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons you have to ght heart disease. Choose lean meats and poultry without skin. Prepare them without added saturated and trans fat. Select fat-free, 1 percent fat, and low-fat dairy products. Cut back on foods with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fat in your diet. Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Try to eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol each day. Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars. Select and purchase foods lower in salt/ sodium. If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means no more than one drink per day if you’re a woman and two drinks per day if you’re a man. Keep an eye on your portion sizes. Physical activity in your daily life is an important step to preventing heart disease. You can take a few simple steps at home, at work, and at play to increase the amount of physical activity in your life. Start taking steps to be heart-healthy.
