Even though the focus o f economic development is to diversify the county’s economic base, agriculture will still remain at the county’s heart. That heart will be celebrated all day Friday, Feb. 17, beginning at 8 a.m. Come to the old airstrip in Clewiston, 610 San Luis Ave. to be a part of this extraordinary event. Beginning as a huge heavy equipment auction, the South Florida Ag Expo has morphed into a full day centered around agriculture. You’ll want to stop by and see what the Clewiston and LaBelle Chambers of Commerce booths have to offer. Try out the Clewiston FFA chapter’s lunch fundraiser. In addition, Hendry County experts are taking the opportunity to educate local folks on biofuel and its potential economic impacts on this area. From 10 a.m. till noon local experts will hold a biofuel symposium. Dr. Rob Gilbert will discuss a Review of Potential Biofuel Feed Stocks from 10-10:30 a.m. From 10:3011 a.m. Dr. John Capece and Dr. Ed Hanlon will provide an Overview of the Hendr y County Biofuel Demonstration Project. From 11-11:20 Dr. Bradley Krohn will give a project update on Highland’s Envirofuels and from 11:20 till noon a panel discussion with questions and answers is scheduled. He taught in Colorado and Tokyo, then decided to further study the “storied” future of World politics. He spent one year in the Soviet Union. He was with an art exhibit in Beijing, China, in 1981 and made subsequent returns to China lecturing on American Culture at the University of Levers. In 1992 Knox sailed his boat to Cuba to “look around” and formed a culture bond with a Cuban German Foundation. With four continuous years sailing out of Key West, Deane sponsored University of Havana teachers to spend a summer in Colorado re-learning the wax system of casting of bronze, now lost in Cuba due to political excesses on the subject of political art. Major events during certain time period, along with key thinkers, musicians, poets and even entertainment all serve to shape the way people view life and approach living. An example of this is seen in the thinking patterns of those who were alive prior to the Vietnam war and those w ho grew up in the 1960s and 1970s. Rarely w ill one nd among two different generations a more stark view of what is important in life. Today there is a new generation of adults. Those born after 1980 are called the "Millennial Generation." This current group of people under the age of 30 are, well, different. I have to admit, my tendency as a full edged member of the "Baby-Boomer" generation is to say to that age group, "Grow up, youngster!" However, I have discovered that those within that age bracket are not going away, nor are they growing up at a pace any different than previous generations. Therefore, it is essential to learn what makes the youngest group of adults "tick" and what their uniquenesses are. With that said, here are some insights about Millennials, (AKA those born from 1980 forward.) 1. They need freedom with their schedule. This one is tough for me. My dad was a marine in WWII. His clock was the only clock that mattered. Awareness of how Millennials respond to time and others respond to time is starkly different. 2. They do well with projects, not a career. Career is just not the same anymore. They desire options, just like free agents. Think about it how many people do you know who worked at the same place for forty years or lived in the same house most of their life? This current generation has no concept of such a group. 3. They are thirsty for a family environment. Work, family and social are all intertwined. An environment that provides a family oriented setting will prove to be fertile ground to Millennials. For them, everything is connected. 4. Cause is important. Tie in compassion and justice to the "normal." Causes and opportunities to give back are important. 5. Embrace social media. Like it on not (or understand it or not) social media is here to stay. Technology is the norm. XBOX, iPhones, laptops, iPads are just normal. If you want a response, text rst, then call. Or DM rst. Or send a Facebook message. 6. Each person thrives on being unique. Don't create standards or rules that apply to everyone. Customize your approach. (I'll admit; this one is dif cult, too!) 7. Authenticity and honesty must be the standard. Millennials are cynical by nature at their core and don't trust someone just because they are in charge. 8. They are not interested in "climbing the corporate ladder," but instead are more concerned about leaving their mark. They don't want to wait their turn. They want to make a difference now and will nd an outlet for in uence and responsibility wherever they can. Empower them early and often and they will do well. Sti e them and the y will go elsewhere. 9. For Millennials it's all about the larger win, not the personal small gain. In general they have an abundance mentality instead of a scarcity mentality. Partnering and collaboration are essential. They are not interested in drawing lines. Teamwork is the ne w currency, along with generosity. A temporal kingdom for one person is not attractive at all. Yet, they will work their guts out for a cause and vision bigger than themselves. 10. Millennials deeply desire mentoring, learning and discipleship. Many older leaders think Millennials aren't interested in generational wisdom transfer. Not true at all. Younger leaders are hungry for mentoring and discipleship. That is great news for church. Jesus called us to be disciples and disciple-makers. They are coachable and want to gain wisdom through experience. Therefore, it is important not to just tell them what to do but lead by example. While it is true that Millennials are a "different breed" the church today must not dismiss them. They've been exposed to just about everything, so the sky is the limit in their minds. They have a much broader and a global perspective. Make an effort to recognize their values, not just their strengths. Don't use them without truly knowing them.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church located 200 yards behind The Front Porch restaurant on Highway 80 in LaBelle. Understanding the Millennial Generation Hiring Veteransby Matt KindermannIn the State of Florida, and all around the country, hiring veterans makes economical sense for business owners and non-pro ts alike. This past November, President Obama signed the "Vow to Hire Hero's Act 2011." This act extended tax credits gained by businesses that hire veterans, and raised some tax credit caps those businesses can claim. In January, Governor Scott reinforced the Hire Hero's Act by announcing Florida's commitment to veterans under the "Hiring Florida's Hero's" initiative. Both campaigns run concurrently and complimentary. Under the Hire Hero's Act, a business that hires a veteran that has been unemployed for more than six months can claim up to $9,600 in tax credits for the rst year of employment. The hire date must be between November 22, 2011, and January 1, 2013. Employers can take a tax credit of 25 percent of the veteran's rst year wages if the veteran worked between 120400 hours. If the veteran worked over 400 hours, employers can take a credit of 40 percent of the veteran's rst year wages, up to $9,600. Under the Hiring Florida's Hero's campaign, employers can access the State's job seeker database and search speci cally for veterans by going to www.veterans. employ orida.com. There is also a hotline employers can use to nd their nearest veteran employment representatives at (866) 352-2345. Veterans in SW Florida are encouraged to register for employment services at their nearest Career Center which can be found at www.sw works.org and clicking on "Locations." For the rst time, non-pro t companies, such as 501(c)'s, can also claim this credit for quali ed hires made between the qualifying periods. To nd these tax incentives and others, go to www.doleta.gov/business/incentives. Veterans are also eligible for SNAP, food stamp assistance, at a higher wage cap than civilians. Veterans can determine their SNAP eligibility by going to www.my orida.com/access orida. by Sarah LappFrom the same stage that brought you Christian music powerhouses Superchic[k], KJ-52 and Brit Nicole in 2008, Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church shed some light on three more musical acts on January 29. Up and coming stars, Southbound Fearing, Embers In Ashes and For A Season captured the audience with their charisma, passion and reckless abandon for Jesus Christ. Southbound Fearing and Embers In Ashes, both signed under Red Cord Records, embarked on their “Fighting Words Tour” w hich spans over 40 states and over 2,000 miles. “The idea behind our tour comes from our most popular radio single “Fighting Words,” Brady Leonard, lead singer and electric guitarist of Southbound Fearing explained. “The song is about the power of scripture and how, if we utilize it properly, it w ill challenge opposition and change lives. Fighting Words is also the last song that we perform in a show. It’s very energetic and leaves a powerful message.” Jeremy Bates, lead singer and founder of Embers In Ashes, recounts that, “Our band formed by the grace of God. I’m from Birmingham, Alabama, and one day I had the calling to start a Christian rock band. So, I put up yers around a university in Alabama and the rest just fell into place. I started getting calls from all over the country. We have a guy from California and Minnesota. It’s not like we were all childhood buddies that bonded through the years, but it all worked out and we get along great.” It didn’t take the band long to decide on a name, and Bates’s personal testimony quickly set the foundation of the group. “The ashes represent our life before Christ. We’re completely dead and full of garbage. Then, God takes hold of us and rescues us from the darkness. He sparks life, love and hope in our souls. He is now the vibrance amidst our emptiness, the embers in our ashes,” Bates beamed. And, boy, was that new life evident when this dynamite group took center stage. “Embers In Ashes had so much energy. They really impressed me. I felt their power the entire show,” Maura Lofton, a seventh grader in Carlson’s EDGE youth ministry commented. For A Season, based out of Lehigh Acres, joined Southbound Fearing and Embers In Ashes for a special appearance at Carlson. “The coolest part about being a Christian artist is being a vessel for Jesus. Every time we perform, our goal is to usher in God’s presence and lift people up. The motive behind our name (For A Season) is that everybody is in different stages of their lives. But, God is going to encourage you and be dedicated to you 110 percent, no matter how rough your circumstances are. That is why we jam for the Lamb, to bring hope to the hopeless at every time in their lives,” lead singer Brian Keating revealed. The evening was organized by Rob Robbins of Miami’s 91.9 FM ‘The Call’ Radio. Robbins phoned CMUMC’s youth minister, Scott Folsom about two weeks before the show. He asked Folsom if he would offer his church and EDGE group to welcome the “Fighting Words Tour” musicians. Scott was exuberant and could not wait for the family of Carlson, the city of LaBelle, and surrounding churches to witness the powerful concert. “Tonight was incredible! I knew I had to come to LaBelle because Scott and all my friends from Riverside Retreat would be there. I came from Englewood, Florida, and it was so worth it. To top it all off, I caught the drumsticks from Embers In Ashes when they threw them into the crowd,” Wil Fisackerly, a sophomore at Lemon Bay High School gushed. These three musical groups are not frivolous boy bands; each and every band member oozes a jubilance that can only come from a child of God. Their music was erce and rich, vibrating off the stained glass windows and penetrating the audience’s souls. Although their music is “stylistically in uenced by rock artists such as Anberlin and Paramore” (Jeremy Bates of Embers In Ashes pointed out) the deeper message is the pure salvation that is offered by our Savior, Jesus Christ. Now that’s something to sing about. Check up on your health with this guide to local health and medical services. They are very proud to announce that they now have available Pixel Optics' revolutionary emPower! eyeglasses, the world's first electronic focusing prescription eyewear. They are the first and currently the only vision care practitioners in Hendry County to offer this new technology. The eyeglasses feature composite lenses with a thin transparent LCD-like layer, microchips, micro-machine accelerometers and miniature rechargeable batteries. With all this they have the same weight, feel and look of your everyday high fashion eyewear designs. The eyewear cost about $1,350 for a complete pair, which includes the frame, lenses, coatings, and all electronic components including a charger. "We are happy to offer our patients this cutting edge vision correction option. Bifocals or the reading power in progressive lenses often interfere with daily activity. Walking up and down steps is a perfect example. Being able to turn the reading power off to reduce it is a real breakthrough," says Drs' Parrish and Youmans. The microchip, micro-accelerometers, and miniature batteries are hidden discreetly in the temples of the frames. The transparent liquid crystal layer in each lens is able to electronically change and activate the near focus zone of the lens only when needed without making a sound or change in the appearance of the lens. Just touch the frame to adjust your view, or set it to do it automatically. emPower! offers instant, automatic vision correction for all ranges of sight, less distortion and wider fields of view compared to a traditional progressive lens. This gives you unprecedented control over you vision! Wearers can choose to operate the eyeglasses in three different modes: manual on, automatic and manual off. emPower! is shock resistant and waterproof. One charge of the battery allows operation for two to three days of use. Stop by the optical at Family Eye Care and let Tom, Natalie or Tracy give you a no obligation demonstration. Front row: Paige, Gennifer, Heather and their mother Diane. by Jerri Lynn MerrittGennifer Raulerson achieved a goal Thursday that she has been chasing since she was ve years old. She signed a National Letter Of Intent to play college softball at South Florida Community College after she graduates from LHS in June. Gennifer chose SFCC because of the coaching staff and small school atmosphere and thought it would be a good t for her as a student and athlete. "G", as she is known to most people, grew up in a softball family and is the third of three sisters to play softball at LaBelle High School and go on to play at the college level. Paige, a 2005 LHS grad, went on to play at FGCU and Heather, a 2007 grad, played at Florida Southern. As with any college athlete, the road to this point has not been an easy one. G has put in years of hard work and made a lot of sacri ces to get to this point in her career pitching in the back yard with dad or one of her sisters until it is so dark she couldn't see or staying after practice when everyone else has gone home to get her pitching or batting practice done were things that were "normal" for G. There were four speakers at G's signing party at LHS on Thursday, Coach Raymond Marroquin, who has coached all three Raulerson sisters at the high school level and has known G since she was a baby, re ected on traveling with the Raulerson family to tournaments and G driving everyone crazy as a little kid. Coach Marroquin also spoke as to the hard work that all three sisters put in and that everything they have achieved has been "earned." Coach Lori Perkins has also coached all three sisters in volleyball and basketball and said that someone may be bigger or faster than G but "no one will work harder than she will." Gennifer's dad Clint spoke and wanted to talk about the people who had a hand in getting the girls to this point. He thanked coaches, teachers and family members in an emotional speech and spoke of how proud he and his wife are to have had their girls go to LaBelle High School. To all of the students who came to wish G well he encouraged them to "follow their dreams, work hard and to never forget where you came from". SFCC coach Carlos Falla also spoke and said that SFCC was excited to have Gennifer join their program and he was looking forward to coaching her at the next level. G would like to thank all of her teammates that have helped her get to this point, and said "softball is a team game and no body can win alone." Gennifer Raulerson signs to play at SFCC

A lternate BrowsersLast week we discussed optimizing the most prevalent browser on Windows systems, Internet Explorer. We mentioned in passing that it’s generally a good idea to have more than one browser installed so that if something happens to your primary browser, you can still enjoy an online experience with an alternate one until you can get your computer repaired. The key to installing an alternate browser is to do it before you absolutely need it. Most browsers use what’s called an ‘online installer’ which simply means you must be connected to the internet to install. If your primary browser is hijacked, it’s probably too late to install an alternate. This article will focus on installing Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox as alternates to Internet Explorer. Which one is best? That’s entirely a matter of opinion, but as all the choices are free, why not try both and see what you like about each? The best part about considering these two alternate browsers is that they’re capable of importing all of your bookmarks/favorites. This means that your home page, and all those bookmarks/favorites you’ve accumulated over the years will still be readily accessible from within your alternate browser. Both Firefox and Chrome are easy to install and offer to automatically import settings from whichever browser it detects is already installed in your system. To install Google Chrome, visit http:// www.google.com/chrome or just search for ‘Chrome’ in your favorite search engine. Typically the installation is as simple as clicking a link and answering a question or two. Installing Mozilla Firefox is just as easy. Visit http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ refox/ fx/ or search for ‘Mozilla Firefox’ using your favorite search engine. Again, a few clicks and some questions answered and you’ll have your alternate browser installed. Installing an alternate browser will often include asking if you’d like the new browser to be your ‘default’. If you’re happy with your current browser (for most, this is Internet Explorer), say ‘No’ and complete the installation. If you say ‘yes’, the new browser will be the one that automatically opens when you click a link in a document or email message. Don’t fret if you’ve made your new browser the default and later want to change your mind. That setting is usually pretty easy to nd; again, simply by using your favorite search engine. Please send any questions or topic suggestions to computercorner@cprtools.net. We’ll review and reply to all messages received. Your next Computer Corner installment will discuss updating your system’s memory (RAM) to increase performance. Why conduct a prescribed fire? Only in the last century has fire in the forest been viewed as a monster. We are now beginning to realize that fire is a natural agent essential for maintaining the natural ecosystems of Florida. Fire is neither all good nor all bad. It is natural. It is powerful. In the proper places, in the right hands, at the right times, fire can be an asset and an ally. To employ fire as a useful friend is much more logical than confronting it as an enemy. How does a prescribed fire work? Instead of using a broom or a leaf blower, land managers use fire as a cleaning tool. Prescribed burning burns the duff layer (pine needles, dead leaves and twigs) at a slow pace going against the w ind. A prescribed fire is planned process that is regulated by the Florida Statues. If the fire escapes, the individual or agency can be held liable. What about the animals? Animal life also depends on fire. The gopher tortoise, whose burrows provide habitat or shelter for hundreds of other species, is dependent on periodic fire to provide fresh browsing vegetation. Without fire, the scrub habitat changes; in overgrown scrub, plants create so much shade and leaf litter that the open, sandy patches disappear and so do the species that prefer them. During a fire, many species of small animals, such as ants, Florida mice, gopher frogs, mole crickets, and ox beetles, have ways to flee, or find refuge in an existing (gopher tortoise) burrow beyond the reach of the heat. Birds can easily fly away from the flames. Larger mammals can often sense and easily out maneuver a fire. Now that we know that many of Florida’s native species will disappear unless fire is introduced back into the habitats, people in charge of preserving and maintaining natural areas are including prescribed burns as part of their management. Prescribed burns are intended to do three things: 1) mimic natural conditions, 2) maintain a variety of plant communities, and 3) decrease the amount of accumulated plant material and thereby reduce the chance of devastating wildfires. A prescribed burn is not a one-time event, but a process that must be continually reapplied to the landscape. www.goodfires.org Contact your local Florida Forest Serv ice office (Vero Beach 772-778-5085; Ft.
