The event took place Dec. 15 at Don’s Steak House and provided an opportunity for close encounters with the candidates. The following is a synopsis of how each candidate explained the reason for his candidacy. Ray Van Houten The county needs a heavier hand, especially in narcotics law enforcement. I want to bring back the safe hometown feeling it had 20 years ago. Matthew Beatty Currently serving on the Hendry County School Board, if elected Matthew Beatty will have to resign from that position. He said that he believes in honor, integrity, responsibility and that he wants to make the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce a recognized model agency. If you surround yourself with good people, it will happen, he said, adding that he considers the community a family. The Grand Marshal is always someone who has been a special supporter of LaBelle and its residents, someone who may or may not work behind the scenes but always works sel essly for the community. The Pioneer Family should have deep roots in the LaBelle area with family members remaining here to help build a thriving community. The next SCF meeting will be Monday, Jan. 2, at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. All are welcome. Only community and business representatives designated by their respective groups have voting rights. Mr. Zimmerly recommended the question be put on an upcoming ballot. A review board will take up the question and make a recommendation. W ater issuesTim Taylor of Applied Technology Management (ATM) pointed out that nancing for the new reverse osmosis water treatment plant the city's been working on for years has hit a last minute snag with the timing of nal designs and nancing deadlines. Final revisions may not make the January 12 renewal date for the $2.6 million loan date at the bank. An ordinance will be required to renew the city's note past January 12. However, the remaining time is too short to pass another ordinance. In the meantime, the city will try to line up other banks for the loan. The issue could lengthen the time before construction can begin or possibly even result in beginning the process over again. public more involved with the sheriff's of ce. He said law enforcement has been my life's work. I have eight years as a captain in charge of various large departments. I can put to use for Hendry County the talents I've learned as a commander. I've w orked for ve sheriffs learned a lot, both good and bad. I will make sure people get what they pay for every day. With bachelors degrees in business and administration and a masters in public administration, my education sets me apart, he said. Incumbent Sheriff Steven Whidden We've come so far, he said, pointing out that on his watch the department has absorbed over $2.5 million in mandated increased expenses, increased the number of deputies on the road to ten while decreasing the administration from nine captains or above, including the sheriff himself and chief deputy. He said his administration has consolidated dispatch, revamped the jail into a professional facility that looks out for inmates. After paying off 15 jail-related lawsuits when he came to of ce, there have been no additional ones led, he said. He said he is making deputies "people friendly;" got a handle on gang violence in Hookers Point in Clewiston. He feels he has turned the tide of community trust using Fun Days, the Citizens Academy, gun safety and concealed weapons courses and a strong volunteer program. The SO now has a full time four-man K-9 unit for drug interdiction and HCSO is implementing the mandated 800 megahertz radio setup, he said, "All without asking for another single penny from the county commission." A rrest reports FORT MYERS, DECEMBER 19, 2011 Harry Chapin Food Bank has been given a new refrigerated truck lled with food as part of a unique, 11-year "Partnership for Hunger Relief" with Ford Motor Company, Newman's Own, Inc. and Feeding America. The partnership began when the late Paul Newman wrote Bill Ford, Jr., then the CEO of Ford Motor Company, to suggest a new initiative focused on providing fresh produce and other perishables to individuals facing hunger in rural America. They put this idea into action by donating refrigerated Ford trucks lled with an assortment of Newman's Own products to Feeding America. As the partnership celebrates its 11th anniversary, another ve Ford trucks are being donated, including one to the Harry Chapin Food Bank. The new refrigerated truck will be used to deliver food throughout the Fort Myers area to people who are at risk of hunger. A total of 103 vehicles in all 50 states have been donated since the partnership began in 2000. The donated trucks have traveled a combined total of more than 6.7 million miles and distributed over 169 million pounds of food, the equivalent of 176 million meals to hard to reach areas. "Families should not have to worry about not having suf cient food on their tables," said Sam Galloway, Jr. dealer principal, Sam Galloway Ford Lincoln and Chairman of Community Cooperative Ministries Inc. (aka The Soup Kitchen). "Harry Chapin is a major supplier to The Soup Kitchen and many other organizations that feed the hungry throughout Southwest Florida. Recently, two vehicles-on two separate occasions, were stolen from Harry Chapin. As a result of this horrible act, we are proud to work with Ford Motor Company to help get Harry Chapin rollin' again as they are an intricate part of feeding the many thousands in need." As part of the Feeding America network, the Harry Chapin Food Bank has responded to the growing need from families, by increasing distribution of food by 210 percent over scal year 2007/2008 to 12.5 million pounds of food in 2010. "When I look at this truck, I see hundreds of thousands of more meals for children, seniors and working poor families. I see fresh fruits and vegetables and other nutritious foods on the tables of our neighbors in need. Ford and Newman's Own are great partners and their support will make a real difference." said Al Brislain, CEO Harry Chapin Food bank. The refrigerated trucks allow for delivery of fresh and nutritious food to hard to reach neighborhoods that are often underserved. Donated produce, meat and dairy products cannot be delivered to remote areas unless refrigerated trucks are available for long delivery routes. "More than 12 years ago Paul Newman realized there was a great need to get nutritious food more broadly distributed. With 49 million people facing hunger, we are glad this program continues to help make a difference, especially in the current economic environment," said Tom Indoe, president and chief operating of cer of Newman's Own, Inc. Other food banks receiving trucks this year are: Atlanta Community Food Bank (Atlanta, GA), Dare to Care Food Bank (Louisville), Josephine County Food Bank (Grants Pass, OR), and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle (Raleigh, NC). Feeding America is the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, with more than 200 member food banks providing food to more than 37 million people in rural, urban and suburban communities. Truck donated to food bank by Pat DobbinsMark your calendar for January 5! The bloodmobile will be at the Hendry County Health Department at 1140 Pratt Blvd, LaBelle from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Every three seconds someone, somewhere, needs a blood transfusion. Blood is always in demand and that's why we've made it easy to donate. The bloodmobile is one of the easiest ways for you to donate blood. Why should you consider donating blood? The best reason to donate blood is saving lives! Your blood donation could save the life of someone who has cancer or leukemia, or someone who is having surgery. Donating blood is easy. You just have to go through a short registration process, answer a few medical questions to make sure that you are healthy enough to donate. The process of donating blood is fast. It should only take about 5-10 minutes to donate, and the whole process shouldn't take any longer than 30 minutes. To donate blood, you must be in good health and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. You must be 17 years old or older. Please note: 16-year-olds can donate with a parent's consent. Why you may not be able to donate If you have a cold or the u or if you have a sore throat you will not be eligible to donate blood. If you are being treated for an illness or have had recent dental surgery you ma y not be able to donate. However, there are several medications that you can take and still be allowed to donate blood. (Such as aspirin, Tylenol, blood pressure medications.) Be sure to eat well at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of uids. You may donate whole blood once every 56 days, which allows plenty of time for your red cells to be replenished. Please note: There is no risk of contracting HIV/AIDS or any other disease through the blood donation process. Each collection kit is sterile, pre-packaged and used onl y once. You are not required to make an appointment, but making an appointment on line will help speed up the process. You can register for an appointment by clicking on this link: http://www.fbcdonor.org/index. cfm?group=op&step=2&opid=250841 Once you click the link, you will be able to see the available time slots for making your blood donation. Choose the time that best ts your schedule. You will only need to put in your name and a contact number to register. Please consider giving the gift o f life; donate blood! We hope to see you on January 5! Bloodmobile at health department

by Les MorganIt has been said that a New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. Recently, I saw a statistic that 55 percent of Americans either never or only infrequently set New Year’s resolutions. Only 8 percent of Americans are always successful in keeping their resolutions. Perhaps this is true because people often set unrealistic resolutions, like “I’m going to lose 30 pounds in January.” It’s not that there is anything wrong with setting resolutions. But, in setting the bar higher than one can jump, naturally, no one will attempt to jump. Or, if one does jump, failure is the result. Sound familiar? So, what if … what if as this New Year approaches, instead of not resolving to do anything, we try another tactic? How? Lower, where we at least make it possible to succeed. I’m not talking about long, drawn-out projects that can’t be accomplished in the short-term. No, I’m talking about simply trying to make reasonable, yet solid resolutions — any one of which can be accomplished in a day. Need some suggestions? How about these… Resolve to pray. This doesn’t have to be dif cult. Sometime during the day, just say a short prayer. Thank God for something, or praise God for something, or tell God you love Him, or confess something to Him, or ask Him for something, or ask Him for something for someone other than yourself. Just try one of these things. Or, if you feel like it -do all of the above. Resolve to say “I love you” to someone. It’s really not hard, and if you try it can happen. You can say it, email it, text it or show it. There are few sayings more powerful in the life of another than these three little words. Resolve to appreciate the world around me. Take a moment or two to smell the roses, or look at the blue sky (or clouds, or rain, ocean, trees … you get the picture) and let the beauty in the world and of life roll over you. Resolve to save money. Simply pass on spending money on something you normally would pay for today. Skip the afternoon Starbucks run, or pack a lunch or snack from home instead of purchasing them. If you’d like, set aside the money you save today for something — or someone — else. Resolve to forgive someone. This doesn’t mean that today you have to forgive the person for the worst wrongdoing that’s ever been committed against you (but it would be a good day for this.) But, we routinely suffer minor offenses against us, so think of one and in your heart and soul, forgive the person who committed the offense. It’s good for you to exercise the same forgiveness that God has demonstrated toward you. If you want to, or need to, even tell the offending person that you forgive them. Resolve not to compare yourself to anyone else. The temptation always exists, doesn’t it? Yet, playing the comparison game is never good for us. We can always nd someone who appears to have more, better, easier ... well, you get the picture. It’s important to remember that we’ll always lose when we compare what we know to be true about ourselves with what we don’t know for sure about others. Resolve to exercise. This can be as simple as going outside for a brisk walk. You don’t have to go overboard here. In fact, if you haven’t been getting regular exercise, don’t go overboard! If at all possible, exercise b y doing something you enjoy. If you nd all exercise tedious, try listening to music, an audio-book, a radio broadcast or a podcast while exercising. Resolve to read from the Bible. No length requirements and no reading plan here. Today, just take some moments to read something from God’s word. Read a verse, passage, chapter, or book, something familiar and cherished, or investigate a portion o f Scripture you have never read. Resolve to prepare. We all have something on the horizon that will bene t from some advance preparation. Not many o f us are good at this, but the time invested in preparation usually pays off when the time to act on that something arrives. Today, loo k ahead to that future event, deadline, or project and take some time to prepare. Resolve not to demand the last word. This is a simple exercise in the discipline of deference. Many of us seek to have the last word … on everything! There are man y possible reasons why so one may feel and act this way. Challenge – skip making some non-life-or-death issue a life-or-death issue. It’s likely that you’ll nd the world doesn’t unravel immediately and it might relieve some of the pressure you feel to keep it from spinning apart. Resolve to add “Please” to your vocabulary. “Please” is an often overlooked common courtesy these days, and especiall y within the family. Stop taking family members for granted, and quit assuming others are at your beck and call. It doesn’t cost anything to add the polite request to your vocabulary, whether at home, school, or work. Also it just might motivate others to do the same. Resolve to make reasonable resolutions this year 4 Caloosa Belle December 29, 2011Serving LaBelle Since 1922To Reach UsMailing Address: P.O. Credit Report Part 2by Matt KindermannYou can review your credit report for free, once a year at each of the three credit bureaus; Experian, TransUnion and Equifax, which essentially allows you to get three free credit reports a year. The only government authorized free credit report site is www. annualcreditreport.com. Go there to request your free credit report once every four months, selecting a different credit bureau each time. The Federal Trade Commission provides guidance on credit reports and answers to common questions at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/freereports/index.shtml. If you receive any spam e-mail about free credit reports, forward the e-mail to spam@uce.gov for investigation. Closely monitoring your credit report is critical when applying for a loan, insurance or a job. Jesus Castorena, Assistant Branch Manager at Seacoast Bank of LaBelle, warns that ID theft is easy to get away with because the victims often don’t know their ID has been stolen until they are denied credit. Your personal information can be gained from many sources including tax statements, credit applications, utility bills, check stubs, sales receipts and licenses. Do not carry your social security card or those of your children, in your wallet. How often are you asked to provide a physical social security card? How many times does it take for ID theft to occur if you lose your kid’s social security card? Shred everything that includes your full name, birth date or social security number. Ensure your wireless router at home is encrypted. When you move, make sure you cancel your mail so the next residents don’t get your credit applications. If you have small children, regularly check their credit report also as many social security numbers are stolen from those who would never know an account was opened in their name until they apply for their rst credit card. Do not discount the act of a deadbeat family member or friend who may steal your child’s social security number to open a fraudulent account. When your child is the victim of identity theft, their nancial future is already in jeopardy. If you have a deceased family member, send their death certi cate to the reporting bureaus because anyone reading the obituaries can target dead people for ID theft, using their social security numbers to open credit lines. Anything unusual on your credit report, like an address you don’t recognize, should raise warning ags and can be corrected by a letter sent to each of the credit bureaus. If you’re having trouble paying your bills, seek credit counseling now! Of cial credit counselors can be found at www. debtadvice.org, or from a list of Justice Department approved companies at www. justice.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/ccde/cc_approved.htm. Welcome to another edition of Computer Corner, the place to go for valuable tips aimed at keeping your computer healthy and hopefully saving you money. Feel free to write to us at computercorner@cprtools.net – you might just see the answer to your question in the Caloosa Belle! For many users of the internet, visiting interactive and attractive Web sites are second nature we don’t often think about how or w hy they work the way they do. Many such sites use add-on features like Java and Flash to keep visitors entertained and to deliver a pleasing experience. Java is actually a programming language which is in heavy use in embedded devices like cell phones, tablet computers and more. Of course, Java can also be loaded from a Web server, right into your browser when you visit sites which employ Java elements. Flash is a content delivery environment, primarily used in Web sites to provide slick animations, menus, forms validation and more. Because they are so popular, these vital additions to our browsers are often targets for hackers and virus delivery mechanisms. When security vulnerabilities are discovered in these elements, alerts are made to the user, right on screen. Most users of Windows operating systems like Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP are familiar with the little pop up messages alerting them that there are updates available to Java and/or Adobe Flash. When updates are available to these components, it is important to take the time to perform these updates but beware that some of them will require you to restart your computer when they’re done, so be sure to save your work before you start your updates! Remember, keeping all components o f your computer’s operating system and installed programs up to date is a good way to stay safe and help keep viruses and malware from nding ways into your system If you think your system has been compromised, please don’t go on the internet instead, contact a quali ed technician who can advise you of ways to clean your system. That’s it for the Computer Corner this week. Our next installment will be all about optimizing your internet browser. We’ll focus on Firefox, Chrome and Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer. 7 Caloosa Belle December 29, 2011 Understanding Java and Flash when visiting web sites Submitted photoUltimate recycling!Primates eat a tremendous amount of produce each week and those living at the local educational primate sanctuary, The Talkin’ Monkeys Project, located in Pioneer Plantation are no exception. This year the expense has been offset by our Winn Dixie grocery store in LaBelle. Thanks to the efforts of volunteer Terri Wilks, Winn Dixie now donates their outdated and bruised fruits and vegetables to the primate sanctuary each week instead of putting them in the dumpster! This is one of the best forms of recycling! The sanctuary thanked the employees and manager of Winn Dixie by giving them two of the paintings made by the primates at the sanctuary. The Indians have only one loss coming from state ranked Barron Collier. The Cowboys led through three quarters in the contest to fall in the nal quarter 74-68. The Cowboys gave up 11 offensive rebounds that w ere scored on from the free throw or paint during the nal half. "To get out rebounded like that and still be in the game speaks volumes about how well we can shoot the basketball," Coach Kelley. Devonte Ray, 11 points 5 rebounds 2 assist, Ellis Johnson, 15 points, 4 assist, 4 steals and Braxton Ford, 23 points 3 assist, and 3 steals led the way for the Cowboys. Ian Kelley had 6 points and 8 rebounds and Tyler O'ferrell 2 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals turned in solid performances. Mark Sloan came off the bench for some quality minutes with 6 points and a couple of rebounds. The Cowboys record drops to 5-5 for December.Cowboys fall to Indians Submitted by David KelleyIn rst round action the Cowboys dropped a close game to Seacrest High School 40-49. Braxton Ford was LaBelle High scorer with 14 points. Devonte Ray added 8 points and 5 boards. The Cowboys seemed a little at after a tough loss Friday to Immokalee. Tyler O'Ferrell added 6 points, 5 steals and 2 blocks in the loss. On Tuesday the Cowboys faced a very large Naples Baptist team in the consolation bracket. The Cowboys hammered out a 5243 win. The Cowboys led through most of the game by as much as ten points but could never put Naples Baptist away. We shoot our free throws well (14-18) for the rst time this year," said Kelley. The victory stopped a four game losing streak on the road for the Cowboys. The win was a defensive struggle due to the fact that 6'6' center Ian Kelley was lost to a knee injury. Braxton Ford led the way again going 8-8 from the line and nishing with 21 points and Devonte Ray added 9 points and 5 rebounds. Ellis Johnson, and Tyler O'Ferrell both chipped in 6 points and some great defense. The fth place game pitted the LaBelle Cowboys and the Donahue Academy from Ave Maria University. The Cowboys came out on re scoring 30 points in the rst quarter. After cooling off in the second quarter, the score was a tight 10 point lead for LaBelle. The Cowboys were up and down until the last 3 minutes of the third quarter when they extended the lead to 10 points again. LaBelle stretched the lead to 17 before a late push by the Donahue Academy cut the lead to nine with the nal 50-59. The win put the Cowboys to 7-5 going into the holiday break. The Cowboys put two players on the all tournament team Braxton Ford and Ellis Johnson. The last two teams we faced were very large the our defense played big with out Ian and found a way to win. "The bench has been getting better and better," said Coach Kelley. by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle From dogs to iguanas, horses to tropical sh, people love their pets. But there is a whole group of people who nd birds are their passion. Danielle Newell is one of those people. She recently opened the Baby Bird Shoppe at 5634 SR 80W the log cabin west of LaBelle. Filled with all types of exotic birds, All Danielle's birds are hand raised. All are for sale, but Danielle is adamant that she will not sell a baby bird to anyone she doesn't feel is right for the task. Every bird has its own personality. Hand raising a bird is very demanding. From the time a baby bird rst enters the w orld, Danielle handles the tiny creatures every day. Each becomes comfortable with human interaction. Daily individual interaction w ith humans is the key to raising these birds to be good pets, Danielle said. Danielle is absorbed with her birds. They even live with her at her home, coming and going with her every day to the store. These birds are hand fed on a strict schedule till they are raised. Danielle feeds them every three hours for six weeks, then every ve hours for 5-9 weeks; then three times a day all by hand. With over 400 birds, her day starts at 8 a.m. She feeds each one by hand, breeders and babies, then cleans and repairs their cages. These birds get nothing but ltered water Danielle explains that it's healthier for them. If you want to know anything about birds, Danielle has the answer. She's started 18 years ago in New York with just cockatiels and has gone on from there, including the very exotic Galerita Galerita from Australia. She said there are only 100-150 pairs in the US. At the Baby Bird Shoppe you will nd Cape Parrots, Conyers, Cockatiels and Parakeets. but she does not handle canaries or nches. She is getting into raising Cuban amazon red heads. These amazingly brilliant birds can easily be identi ed females have red heads; males have green. Danielle offers wing and nail clipping for all kinds of birds. Please call for an appointment. You can nd all sorts of supplies for your bird, including food, toys, perches and cages. Danielle even offers specialty seed mixes. You can even have a DNA test done to determine the sex of your bird if you'd like. Danielle is very particular about her birds and is careful about placing the right bird with the right owner. When looking for a bird, she advises, take your time, visit several times. There is no push to sell in her shop, she said, and notes that an exotic bird is not a good "surprise" present. You get what you pay for, she notes, and is adamant that you must be interactive with birds or they will unlearn what they've been taught and have to be retaught. Danielle also rehabilitates birds and will place them in bird rescue, if necessary. The Baby Bird Shoppe is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; open Thursday and Friday 12-6, Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 11-5. Call 239-220-6108. Danielle breeds, raises and sells domesticated birds only and she is careful to place her birds with the right owner. She has made this her life's work. "This is what I do," she says with a smile.
