He had been stabbed once in the left chest. Ms. Williams was to plead not guilty and was set for arraignment next month, but the SAO decided not to le November 9. At 10:45 p.m. September 29, a hysterical 911 call sent deputies to 3609 SR 29S, trailer 1. In the call she stated she had accidentally stabbed her boyfriend and he wasn't breathing. At the scene the victim was lying face up inside a screen door, at the base of steps leading into the single wide trailer. Deputies reported that the victim had one horizontal stab wound in the left chest about a half inch wide. He was wearing gray sweat pants, a blue T-shirt with brown work-type boots and dark socks. There was a small amount of blood spatter on the concrete b y the body. by Matt KindermannThe second annual Youth Leadership Hendry/Glades kicked off this past week with a donation of $250 by the Rotary Club of LaBelle. The Youth Leadership Project Chair, Kim Hamilton, was on hand to describe the program which is designed to develop leadership traits in high school students through instruction about the community’s needs, obstacles and resources. The students interact with community leaders through ve module sessions focusing on Agri-business, Finance, Community Service, County Government and Water/Environment. There is no cost to the students as all the cost is covered thorough sponsorships with the LaBelle 4-H donating the vans, drivers and fuel. In this second year of operation, the program has expanded to include 24 students from LaBelle High School, Moore Haven High School, Clewiston High School and The King’s Academy. It costs $250 each of the ve days to feed the students, to which Kim is actively seeking sponsorships to cover the remaining costs and advises that donations are tax deductible. If anyone is interested in being a sponsor or donating to this event, please make checks payable and mail to Leadership Hendry and Glades Counties, PO Box 2518, LaBelle, FL, 33975, or call the Hendry EDC at 863-675-6007 for more information. The Rotary Club of LaBelle is also working with the Rotary Club of North Ft. Myers for their annual fundraiser event, “Cruise for a Cause.” The Cruise for a Cause is raising money to replace the school computers in West Nassau, Bahamas. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines are offering a $100 credit for each cabin booked for the Bahamas trip December 2-5 by reserving at www.rotarynftmyers.org/cruiseforacause or by calling Krenz Travel at 239-471-7838 ext 201. Each participant will carry aboard a backpack with ve-ten textbooks to be donated to the school upon arrival and so far they have well over 2,500 textbooks! The cost of the project stands at $30,000 and the SW Florida Rotary District is offering a matching grant for the rst $7,500. If you cannot make the cruise but are willing to donate to this cause you can mail a check to Rotary Club of N. Ft. Myers, 4141 Orange Grove Blvd, N. Ft. Myers, FL, 33903, or call the Club President Danielle Hall at 239-8101602. by Bianca RossProgram Coordinator, Drug Free Hendry County The nation’s “war on drugs” is a different beast today than it was in the past. A large part of the change has to do with the rise of prescription drug abuse over other drugs, says former U.S. special agent for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Bob Stutman. In fact, prescription drugs may overtake car crashes as the leading cause of fatal injury in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Florida, prescription drugs account for three-quarters of all drug overdose deaths. The CDC’s new report nds that more than 40 people die each day from overdosing on painkillers like oxycodone and Vicodin. In Florida 7-8 people die every day from prescription drugs. The death toll has tripled in the past decade. “I can close the Mexican border tomorrow for drugs, and I would have a minimal effect on drug abuse in the United States,” Stutman told WGCU’s Gulf Coast Live Tuesday. “Most of the drugs come from parents’ medicine chests, and they’re prescribed by a physician.” According to the DEA, sales of prescription painkillers to pharmacies and health care providers have increased by more than 300 percent since 1999. Florida has the highest number of prescription painkiller sales per person in the nation. “For short-term pain like a broken arm, broken leg, bad knee, the average person will take about ve to seven opioids,” said Stutman, who spent more than two decades with the DEA. “[But] the average prescription last year was for 60.” “What is happening to the other 55? Of course what happens to them is they sit in parents’ medicine chests and kids go in.” More than 36,000 Americans died from prescription drug overdoses in 2008. Prescription Drug Overdoses kill 7-8 people a day in Florida. -Farah Dosani, Healthy State.org Why does this matter to us in Hendry County? Our High School Youth report that at least one in ten has tried a prescription pain reliever. In addition to that some statistics say that 90% percent of the prescription drugs teenagers abuse come from a home medicine cabinet. As part of Drug Free Hendry County’s efforts to continue to keep our community safe we hosted a Prescription Drug TakeBack program on Nov. 5 at J&J Pharmacy in LaBelle and K&M Drugs in Clewiston. The brother’s Kaki came through again by providing their facilities and offering free lunches to all who came. We collected 92 pounds of unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications for our third Operation Medicine Cabinet. This is an increase from the 60 pounds of medications we received in April. Drug Free would also like to thank the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce, Clewiston Tiger Booster Club, Hendry and Glades Tobacco-Free Partnerships, Hendry County Health Department, volunteers, Glades County Health Department, Fast and Friendly Pharmacy in Moore Haven and all of the provider of ces that publicized the event. The system produces little valid evidence of how a VPK provider is performing only how a group of 5-year-olds fare on a test given in their rst days as kindergartners, by a teacher who is still unfamiliar to them. For the Redlands Christian Migrant Association, the impact goes a step farther. We have learned rst-hand that the testing system leads Florida to slam the VPK door on the children who need it the most. I write speci cally of 49 at-risk children at RCMA's Krome Child Development Center in LaBelle. They would be attending VPK today, but don't have access to it because Florida shut down Krome's program based on this highly awed testing system. Despite RCMA's clear proof of educational success measured from entry into our program through exit, these children have been labeled as "not ready." Their younger successors also are shut out because state rules make no provision for ever restoring VPK at Krome. This center is nationally accredited, with a Gold Seal from the Florida Department of Children and Families. Yet Krome was labeled a "low performing-provider" of VPK because its 5-year-old alumni scored low on one of two tests. Ironically this phonemic awareness test is called fair! For 46 years, RCMA has provided an acclaimed level of early childhood education, targeting the poorest of the rural poor. We know, and research has con rmed repeatedly, that impoverished children suffer measurable developmental delays as young as age 3. RCMA and other quality Head Start programs can help them catch up to their more privileged peers. Additionally, many of children arrive at RCMA with Spanish as their rst language. By the time they leave our program, they may have spent years 3 and 4 practicing their new language, English. This isn't unusual among Hendry County's children, who need access to VPK badly. Nearly a third of them live in poverty, compared to a fth of all children statewide, and 76 percent of those in public schools are poor enough to qualify for free or reduced school lunches, compared to 53 percent statewide. Yet the Hendry County school system does not offer VPK during the school year. At a handful of small private providers, children's parents pay tuition for most of the day and receive the VPK portion of the da y free. But many families struggle to meet the most basic needs, with no money for child care. By closing our Krome VPK program, the state eliminated more than a fourth of the available VPK classroom chairs in LaBelle, the county seat. RCMA appealed the decision. The local school district supported us, but the state denied the appeal. Florida's VPK testing system was meant to satisfy the Legislature's desire for accountability. Instead it has labeled new kindergarteners as failures in their rst month of school, and has discounted the children's proven learning gains. The future looks even bleaker for Florida's most vulnerable 4-year olds as the awed State tests remain the same and the passing score is raised higher. The Florid a Department of Education estimates that the number of low-performing providers will grow from 798 currently to 1,667 next year. At this rate, the state itself will become a "low-performing provider" of VPK. Florida's voters, who in 2002 mandated VPK access for all 4-year-olds, will be pointing the nger.Leslie Moguil is Associate Executive Director fo r Redlands Christian Migrant Association, base d in Immokalee. V PK ‘accountability’ punishes needy children Many accoladesThe residents and staff of Oakbrook of LaBelle would like to take this opportunity to "Thank" all who participated in our Halloween Spook-tacular event. In two hours, our residents were able to share handfuls of candy with more than 500 children. Our residents really enjoyed seeing the children in all the different costumes. This was a night that our residents and staff will remember and talk about for days to come. Thanks to all of the support of our community, family members, friends, we were able to collect enough candy to make this evening a great success. We would like to extend special "Thanks" to the employees of Winn Dixie and the membership of the American Legion for allowing us the opportunity to use their establishments as collection points and all the bags of candy that they donated. We would like to "Thank" the members of Kiwanis for the multitude of pumpkins and candy they donated. We would also like to give many "Thanks" to the members of Riverbend Motorcoach Resort and the members of South Gulf Football Of cials Association for the many boxes of candy that they collected. Sincerely, Mike Morse-Act. Dir. Thank You Virtual Recruiterby Matt KindermannThe term recruiter immediately conjures images of military men conducting recruiting drives at high schools. Some even relate the term with a head hunter. A recruiter, military or corporate, is simply someone tasked with nding speci c people for speci c jobs. A recruiter is generally contacted by the hiring manager of a company, given a list of required skills and traits and let loose to nd someone that embodies the ideal candidate. If the recruiter's candidate is hired, the recruiter gets a percentage of the candidate's yearly starting salary. However, the recruiter has to compete against others trying to ll that job with candidates, and contend with the sometimes ckle attitude of their own candidates who waiver over taking a job. Nothing about a recruiter's job is consistent. Sometimes a recruiter can earn a year's salary on one placement, but other times can go months without any income at all. Fortunately, Florida's employment Web site, www.employ orida.com, is designed to take all the guesswork out of recruiting, with the use of the Virtual Recruiter. Employ Florida Marketplace, or EFM, allows the computer conduct automatic job searches for them. This allows the individual to let the computer conduct job searches, to which daily e-mails are generated and sent to your e-mail inbox. Imagine the ease of simply checking your e-mail for jobs to apply for, instead of conducting hours of job searches. To set up a Virtual Recruiter on EFM, you rst need an EFM account. Go to www. employ orida.com and click on "Not Registered, Learn How and Why." Then select "Individual." Next, follow the instructions to enter your personal information, making sure to put in an e-mail address that you or someone close to you will check regularly. This is a State system. If you have lived in Florida for longer than a year or two, you most likely have had a pro le created when you renewed your driver's license or applied for food stamps or unemployment. If you have an existing account but do not know your password, contact the Southwest Florida Works of ce nearest you to speak with an Employment Representative that can reset your password. Find your local of ce at www.sw works.org and click on "Locations." Once your EFM account is activated, conduct a job search by using key words such as "Truck Driver," or "Bookkeeper." When the list of available jobs is created, go to the bottom of the list and click "Save Search." If you tell the computer to search "Daily," the computer will conduct the same search every day and the new jobs it nds will be sent to your e-mail. All you have to do is the rst search, and once saved, the computer will do it for you every day. Even if you're not in the market for a new job, it may be bene cial to have a Virtual Recruiter working for you. You never know when or where that "Dream Job" will pop up. If it does, the Virtual Recruiter will send you an e-mail to let you know! Matt Kindermann C a r e e r C o r n e r Career Corner

According to Ken Berger, president and CEO of Charity Navigator, receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that Catholic Charities adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a scally responsible way. Berger said that Catholic Charities outperforms most other charities. The top rating is designated as “exceptional,” Berger said, and is available for v iewing at the Charity Navigator Web site at w ww.charitynavigator.org. As the nonpro t sector continues to grow and donors have less to give, Berger said that donors are demanding more accountability, transparency and quanti able results from the charities they choose to support. “Catholic Charities also realizes that it has to earn the top rating in each future y ear through implementing the best possible stewardship of contributions,” RoutsisA rroyo said. November is recognized as American Diabetes Month. America is facing an epidemic of diabetes, a serious disease that damages the body and shortens lives. Diabetes is a disease where the body doesn’t produce insulin or when your body doesn’t use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that your body needs to convert sugar, starches and other foods into energy. There are two different kinds of diabetes. Type-1 diabetes is when the body fails to produce insulin. People with this type have to get daily shots of insulin to survive.Type-2 diabetes is when the body fails to make enough insulin or properly use insulin. About 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes are Type-2 diabetes. Typically Type-2 diabetes develops after the age of 45. Some of the signs of diabetes can include excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual w eight loss, increased tiredness, increased irritability and blurry vision. Sometimes family history plays a part in whether a person develops diabetes, but other factors such as being over weight or lack of exercise appear to play a role as well. Diet, exercise and new medicines can prevent or delay much of the illness and complications of diabetes. Did you know that there is also something known as pre-diabetes? Pre-diabetes is a blood glucose level higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Ask your doctor about getting tested. If your number is between 110-125, then y ou are in the pre-diabetes range. Keep in mind that a 5-10% reduction in body weight produces a 58% reduction in diabetes. Take action now! Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. (Dance, w alk the dog, play with your kids!) Try to eat healthier and educate yourself on proper serving sizes. When a person has diabetes, they also have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, or blindness. There is no known cure for diabetes, but there is treatment. If you already have diabetes, managing the disease can lower your risk of complications such as kidney failure, heart disease and stroke, blindness, and amputations of legs and feet. With nearly 26 million children and adults in American living with diabetes, and another 79 million at high risk for developing type-2 diabetes, the disease is taking a devastating physical, emotional and nancial toll on our country. Recent numbers reported by the CDC state that every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes and diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes by 2050 unless we take steps to stop diabetes. For more information about diabetes go to http://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/pubs/factsheet11.htm or http://www. diabetes.org/ TO A MORE HUMAN WAY TO BANK TO THE POWER OF PRE-APPROVALWhats your lucky number? For 2011, that man is Ruben Rodriguez. A 1973 graduate of LaBelle High School, Ruben attended Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. At MSU he earned a graduate degree in Criminal Justice. While in college, he played four y ears of football, making second team AllConference and Captain during his senior year. Following graduation Ruben returned to LaBelle where he worked for the Hendry County Sheriff’s Department. He worked in the jail, on the road and as an investigator. In 1985 Ruben was named Criminal Inv estigator of the Year. He then opened up his own business in 1984 as Rodriguez Investigative and Security Services for 7 years. Ruben is currently employed as Production Manager for Plantation Medicinals Inc. of Felda, where he has worked for the past 20 years. As a student at LaBelle High School, he was Student Government President, Senior Class President, played four years on the football team and one year on the baseball team. Ruben was Captain of the football team during his junior and senior years. He led the team in tackles during his sophomore and senior years and was named to the All Southwest Florida teams during his sophomore, junior and senior years. Ruben still holds several football records at LaBelle High School, including most interceptions in a year (ten), most receptions in a year (60), and most career interceptions (28). Ruben’s fondest memories of his years at LHS include the small town feeling of unity and the fact that his teams beat three ranked teams during their junior year. Ruben’s post graduation years in LaBelle have provided him with a multitude of memories, but a few of them stand out above the rest. He is involved in community projects and enjoys helping neighbors and families in need. He is a board member of the Felda Civic Association. He spent time mentoring youth in basketball, but has since retired from that activity to spend more time with his family and traveling. Ruben is married to Shana Rodriguez and together they have four children and two grandchildren. They include Kylie Siek (age 32), Bianca (age 23), Arianna (age 22), and son-in-law Master Sergeant Aaron Siek, granddaughter Tenley (age 3) and granddaughter Isla (age 6 months). One little known fact about Ruben is his in uence on the educational opportunities afforded to his peers while students at LaBelle High School and his in uence on education in Hendry County generally. When Ruben accepted a scholarship to Minot State University, he was the rst-ever student from LHS to travel over 2,000 miles to far away North Dakota. Ruben made it through those tough years, being far from family and friends. But over time, he was able to convince the people at Minot State that there were more talented student athletes at LaBelle High School that should be given a chance at Minot State. Because of his work ethic, character and persuasion, several other LHS graduates went to MSU over the years. Glenn Finks, Ron Dunbar, Craig Davidson, Pat Langford and Willie Fagan were all given opportunities and scholarships to Minot State University. Due to the friendships that Ruben and the other LaBelle students made in North Dakota, several teachers from the great white North eventually moved to LaBelle and have in uenced students in Hendry County Schools for over 20 years. Those folks include Russ and Jodi Bell; Bonnie and John Miller; and Dave and Robyn Blake. Ruben would like to recognize the educators who most in uenced his life including Mrs. Willoughby, Mrs. English, Coach Wilson and Beau Davidson, Hendry Count y School Board member. Ruben would also like to thank his family for their support over the years. All the members of Student Government would like to congratulate Ruben on his selection as the 2011 LaBelle High School Honored Alumnus. They also recognize and respect Ruben for “coming back home” to continue his contribution to the LaBelle and Felda communities. Thank you also, Ruben, for making all of the graduates and current students of LaBelle High School proud to be a Cowboy.Submitted by Mel Greenlea f Ruben Rodriguez is 2011 LHS honored alumnus Get ready for Junior ProHey, Kids! Sports Shorts Ruben Rodriguez by Jordan OdafferOn senior night the Cowboys notched a v ictory at home to end their season at 3-7. The Terriers got on the score board rst after they executed a fake punt to convert a 4th down. This big play moved the Terriers into the red zone and eventually they got to the 2-yard line before the Cowboy defense led by Senior Delindio Watson and Sophomore Danny Robinson. On the following drive the Cowboys depended on their offensive line led by Senior Dennis Graham, Junior Chris Jasiak and Sophomore Caleb Rimes to open up holes for Robinson and Junior Ellis Johnson. After they both had long runs to end the rst quarter Johnson got the Cowboys on the board with a 27-yard scamper through a gaping hole. After Senior David Antunez’s extra point the Cowboys led 7-3. On the ensuing kickoff the Cowboys corralled the Terriers’ dangerous return man deep in Moore Haven territory. The Cowboys run defense took the Terriers to task all night and forced them to the air when Antunez de ected a pass to Sophomore Jonathan Rodriguez who intercepted and returned it to the 40. The Cowboys drove to the 2 before a delay of game stalled the drive that ended with an interception in the end zone. However, the Cowboys defense returned to the eld led by Watson, Robinson, Senior Lenel Jones, Junior Luis Hernandez and Caleb Rimes. The Cowboys and Terriers exchanged possession for the remainder of the rst half until a Moore Haven interception put the Terriers in Cowboy territory. However, the Cowboys strong defense stopped the Terriers and forced them to settle for a eld goal to close the scoring in the rst half with the Cowboys ahead 7-6. To start the second half Antunez kicked and recovered an onside kick, which set up the Cowboy’s nal score of the night. The Cowboys again used their running game to drive down the eld and score. Robinson ran the ball 29 yards to the Moore Haven 4 and after a face masking penalty against the Terriers Robinson nished the drive with a 2-yard score. Antunez again connected on his extra point and put the Cowboys ahead 14-6. The rest of the game was a battle for eld position with neither team really getting the edge until, with a minute left, the Terriers returned a punt to the Cowboy’s 20-yard line. With intentions to score the Terriers were turned away by the Cowboy Defense led by Eduardo Gonzalez, who made a tackle and defended 4 straight passes in the end zone to seal the game for the Cowboys.Cowboys HighlightsDanny Robinson 15 carries for 108 yards and a TD--8 tackles 2 tackles for loss Ellis Johnson 16 carries for 132 yards and a TD Jonathan Rodriguez 2 tackles and 1 interception Delendio Watson 12 tackles 2 tackles for loss Lenel Jones 1 catch for 9 yards--11 tackles 4 tackles for loss Eduardo Gonzalez 4 tackles 2 pass brea k ups Pablo Jaramillo 9 tackles 2 tackles for loss Luis Hernandez 13 tackles 2 tackles for loss Caleb rimes 8 tackles 3 tackles for loss Victor Mendez 2 tackles 2 tackles for loss This is the rst home win for the Cowboys since the 2009 season against Gatewa y Charter School. It works better than any cough syrup and has antibacterial properties as well. Besides, when you don’t feel good, honey is a favorite comfort food. I had a nice 77th birthday despite some comical remarks about my age from some of my y oung whippersnappers and that was okay. After all, they’re whippersnappers ... but I will comeback to make fun of them when they are old. Thanksgiving is just around the corner so get started early. A lot of stuff can be made early like the cranberry relish and anything that can stay in the fridge for a few days. Call Debbie Woodford and Klemmer and order your dessert. That’s one thing out of the way. Borrow a few crock pots from the smart people that are dining at somebody else’s house. Do the potatoes and gravy early and keep them warm in the crock pots. While the turkey is resting you can pour the pan goodies in the gravy. I think I read that you can keep rolls warm in the crock pot as well. W itches Brew
