The action was taken at the board’s regular October 25 meeting. The county commission expects to have a joint redistricting meeting with the school board Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. at Clewiston City Hall. It is felt that, although it isn’t necessary, it is much simpler for the residents if both the county commission and school board districts are the same. Before the Nov. 8 joint meeting, school board members will meet one-on-one with Supervisor of Elections Lucreti a Strickland to familiarize themselves with the board’s preferred plan and to register their own changes. Ms. Strickland said she does not anticipate any problems with concurrence b y the school board.Pain management clinicsLast December the board enacted a one-year moratorium on the establishment of pain management clinics in Hendry County. The commissioners opted for a 90-da y extension to come up with very stringent regulations.Public hearingsThe commission gave the go ahead to rezoning property owned by the Pereiro family from General Commercial to Planed Unit Development (PUD). The Pereiros want to expand use o f Joint redistricting meeting November 8 Representative Grimsley, whose district covers Hendry, Glades, Collier and Highland counties, is a strong advocate for children, families and early learning issues. She has worked tirelessly at the local and state level in a variety of public service positions to ensure good outcomes for children. During the 2011 Legislative Session, Representative Grimsley was instrumental in ensuring a good transition for early learning services as changes were made to agency structures. Representative Grimsley recognizes the role of early learning to ensuring the future economic success of Florida and the importance of providing high quality early learning to all children. “Representative Grimsley is a champion for children,” says Roseann Fricks, Chair of the Association of Early Learning Coalitions and Executive Director of the Early Learning Coalition of Marion. “By striving to address children’s issues, especially in troubling economic times, Representative Grimsley has proven herself as someone to be admired and emulated. The “Early Learning Champion Award” recognizes all the hard work Representative Grimsley has done for families and children of this state.” Warren Eldridge, Chair of the Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach, and Alisa Ghazvini, staff Grimsley ‘Early Learning Champion’ Submitted photo/ Mel KarauRotary learns of court challengesThe LaBelle Rotary Club recently heard a presentation from Honorable John E. Get ready for this holiday season by emptying your medicine cabinet of expired, unused, unwanted prescriptions and over the counter drugs and bringing those to the local Operation Medicine Cabinet™ drop off location on Saturday, November 5. Because medications should not be ushed down the toilet or thrown in the garbage, and because they pose a risk to children in the home, Drug Free Hendry County and the Hendry County Sheriff’s Ofce have partnered with J&J (LaBelle) and K&M (Clewiston) Family Pharmacies to offer this community program for the third time in Hendry County. Ayman Kaki, owner of J&J Pharmacy in LaBelle, will be providing hamburgers and hot dogs to those who come by his store that day! Seventy percent of people over 12 who abuse prescription drugs report they get their drugs from a family member. Don’t be the supplier. The United Way of Hendry and Glades 2011-2012 Campaign has reached 50 percent of its $200,500 goal through the fundraising efforts of Pacesetter companies. Mary Beth Carroll, chair of the United Way of Hendry and Glades 2011-2012 Campaign announced the milestone at the recent Kick-Off event. The 50 percent mark was achieved by Pacesetter companies who run their campaigns early to demonstrate United Way support and to encourage others to give. Carroll said at the Kick-Off at Hilliard Brothers in Clewiston, “We are very pleased to have reached the 50 percent mark at this point in the campaign. I want to thank the Pacesetter Companies and other early givers for stepping up to set a great example for our campaign.” Pacesetter Companies include: Hilliard Brothers $42,652; Alico, Inc. $33,887; Hendry County School District $16,116; Johnson-Prewitt Associates $6,036; Lykes Brothers $3,640; Monsanto Imagine $2,326; Hendry County employees $1,000. The Spring Fling event held in April 2011 raised an additional $14,500. Carroll went on to say, “Considering the huge need in our community, we must reach the $200,500 goal so that we can fully fund the entire network of 30 United Way agencies that help so many people in our community. We are reaching more of the individuals and families who are in great need through our partnership efforts, but to continue to serve those in need, we must reach the goal.” Cliff Smith, President of the United Way commented, “This is a generous community, and we can do it. Every gift is important no matter what size, because added together they can make a real impact and change people’s lives.” United Way has recently expanded services in Hendry and Glades counties by opening a United Way House in Clewiston in partnership with Goodwill. An additional United Way House is planned for Moore Haven in the near future, and there is a United Way House in LaBelle. United Way Houses provide free space for agencies so people needing services can access them near their own neighborhood. A local network of 34 agencies and programs will receive funds from the 2011-2012 United Way of Hendry and Glades fundraising campaign. These agencies include: The Salvation Army, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Children’s Advocacy Center, Child Care of Southwest Florida, Healthy Families and many others. This network serves a diverse range of needs: nurturing children and youth, strengthening families, meeting critical needs such as helping the elderly and disabled live independently and empowering communities by bringing health and human services to neighborhoods. The network of United Way agencies helped over 21,000 people in Hendry and Glades Counties last year. In addition to housing the United Wa y 211 helpline program, many agency programs and services can be found at the LaBelle and Clewiston United Way Houses such as Southwest Florida Addiction Services, Children’s Advocacy Center, Community Coordinated Care for Children (4 C’s), Hendry-Glades Homeless Coalition, Catholic Charities and more. In addition to raising funds for human service organizations in the community, the United Way promotes partnerships and collaborations among agencies, helping them to work together focusing on issues and solutions that continue to improve lives. The importance of updatesIf you’re a Windows user, and most of us are, you’re used to seeing the periodic request to install updates. For some, this is a tiresome and annoying process which often causes the computer to reboot just when y ou’d rather it didn’t. The truth is, when security and other important updates are available, you really should download and install them. More times than not, these include important patches to your system which help keep you and your data safe and make the operating system more stable. For Windows users, enabling automatic updates is the way to go; doing this will ensure that you’ve got the latest updates as they become available. If you use Of ce products like Word and Excel, they’ll have their own set of updates and they’re just as important as the ones for the operating system. To nd out exactly how to set your Windows system to get and install automatic updates, use your friendly search engine (like google.com, bing.com or yahoo.com). Searching for “Windows XP enabling automatic updates” produced great results for W indows XP. If you’re running Windows V ista or Windows 7, just substitute your operating system for Windows XP to get fast and easy answers. Macintosh users enjoy an operating system that does automatic updates by default, so it’s likely that our Mac friends won’t need to set anything special to ensure updates. Next week, Computer Corner will discuss v irus protection and why it’s critically important. Some men, and women, for that matter, hunt deer, wild hogs, turkey or even big game like elk, bear and even tigers and lions. These folks subscribe to magazines, collect books and join clubs where other hunters can learn from one another. I, too am a hunter, and have been for a long time. Each year I spend a fair amount of money on this endeavor. This has been my practice for nearly three decades. And, as far as I know that will be my practice for a good many years in the future. While others hunt wild game, I hunt stories. The reason is simple – I am responsible for three sermons a week. I need stories to illustrate a point while teaching a Bible lesson or preaching. Recently I found a dandy story. It helps all of us understand a little better this truth called “Grace.” “I shook my head in disbelief. This couldn’t be the right place. I couldn’t possibly be welcome here. I had been given an invitation several times, and had nally decided to see what this place was all about. I peered through the window again and saw people whose faces seemed to glow with joy. All were neatly dressed in ne garments and appeared clean as they dined at this exquisite restaurant. “Ashamed, I looked down at my own tattered and torn clothing, covered in stains. I was dirty. A foul smell seemed to consume me and I couldn’t shake the grime that clung to my body. As I turned around to leave, the words from the invitation seemed to leap out at me, “Come as you are. No jacket required.” I decided to give it a shot. Mustering up every bit of courage I could nd, I opened the door and walked up to a man behind a podium. “Your name, sir?” he asked with a smile. “Jimmy D. Brown,” I mumbled without looking up. “I thrust my hands deep into my pockets, hoping to conceal their stains. He didn’t seem to notice the lth that I was covered in and continued, “Very good, sir. A table is reserved in your name. Would you like to be seated?” A grin broke out on my face and I said, “Yes, of course!” He led me to a table and, sure enough, there was a placard with my name written on it in a deep, dark red. “The man returned and said, ‘I recommend the ‘Special of the Day.’ With it, you are entitled to heaping portions of everything on this menu.’ You mean, I can have all of this! “What is the ‘Special of the Day,’ I asked. “Salvation,” was his reply. “I’ll take it,” I practically cried out. “Then, as quickly as I made that statement, the joy left my body. A sick, painful ache jerked through my stomach and tears lled my eyes. Between my sobs I said, “Mister, look at me. I’m dirty and nasty. I have a foul mouth. I’m unclean and unworthy of such things. I’d love to have all of this, but, but, I just can’t afford it.” Undaunted, the man smiled again. “Sir, your check has already been taken care of by that Gentleman over there,” he said pointing to the front of the room. “His Name is Jesus.” Turning, I saw a man whose ver y presence seemed to light the room. He was almost too much to look at. “I found myself walking towards Him and in a shaking voice I whispered, “Sir, I’ll wash the dishes or sweep the oors or take out the trash. I’ll clean myself up and stop swearing. I’ll do anything I can do to repa y you for all of this.” He opened His arms and said with a smile, “Son, all of this is yours if you just come unto Me. Ask Me to clean you up and I will. Ask me to take away the stains and it is done. Ask me to clean up your mouth and I will. All you have to do is accept the gift.” “Astonished, I fell at His feet and said, “Please, Jesus. Please clean up my life.” Immediately, I heard the words, “It is nished.” I looked down and white robes adorned m y squeaky clean body. I felt new, like a weight had been lifted, and I found myself seated at His table. “The ‘Special of the Day’ has been served,” the Lord said to me. Salvation is yours.”Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church in LaBelle, located on Highway 80 200 yards behind A Country Place Restaurant. 4 Caloosa Belle November 3, 2011Serving LaBelle Since 1922To Reach UsMailing Address: P.O. Y ou can have it: Unbelievable, Stunning, Amazing Grace Dr. Les Morgan Interview Tipsby Matt KindermannThis week we will cover more examples of common interview questions, their theory and suggestions on how to craft appropriate responses. Because so much time is spent writing resumes and cover letters, lling out applications and stressing about a phone call or e-mail acknowledging the receipt of that application, preparing for an interview is usually, and wrongly, the last thing a candidate prepares for. There are two types of interviews: traditional and behavioral. Identifying the type of interview you nd yourself in is easy after the rst question or two. Traditional interviews ask straightforward questions such as “why are you the most quali ed candidate for this position?” Usually, this is the last question an employer will ask, which makes the answer possibly the most memorable if delivered well. The rst thing to remember when answering this question is to stick to your resume. Highlight your skills and abilities for the job which you are applying. Don’t stray towards clichs or begging statements such as “I want to move out of my parents house” or “my girlfriend is expensive.” Start by repeating your branding statement. A branding statement, otherwise known as an elevator speech, is a 30 second sales pitch of why someone should give you a pay check. Think of yourself as a product being advertised on the radio; why should they purchase your product or what skills and abilities can you offer the company? Next, brie y state why you like this company and how your vision matches the company’s goals and direction (which you read about on their Web site). End with a short example of a success you achieved for an old employer and suggest that you can achieve similar success with this employer. A behavioral question may sound like “what would your old boss or co-workers say about you if we called them?” Employers are looking to see how you view your old co-workers, not how they view you. This question allows the interviewer to see how you treat people you work with and what you say about them when they’re not around. To answer this question, reply with how much you learned at your old jobs and give one or two speci cs on something exciting you learned while working there. Finish by saying that you hope your old co-workers enjoyed working with you as much as you enjoyed working with them. If the last job ended poorly, state what you learned from that experience and how it makes you a more valuable employee. Whatever the question, limit your answer to 45 seconds or less. Try to smile a lot and look each interviewer in the eye. When you’re nished with your answer stop talking. Many interviewers try to elicit more information if they stall between questions, don’t be baited and give more than you want. If there is an awkward silence after you have answered a question, kindly ask “did that answer your question?” To nd a free Interviewing Skills Workshop go to www.sw works.org, click on “Locations” then “Calendars.” C a r e e r C o r n e r Career Corner Matt Kindermann Speak OutGot your numberHalloween afternoon, myself, and 73 year old mother and two Hispanic men were playing croquet about three in the afternoon on Favor St. At approximately 3 o’clock a late model, black PT Cruiser drove westbound and a teenage Hispanic girl stuck her head out a window and shouted “Go bac k to Mexico!” Well, you may not know it, but I have a photographic memory. One out of three adults age 65 and older falls each year, but less than half of those seniors talk with their healthcare providers about it. Falls have become a nationwide health problem a problem that is largely preventable. That's why Senior Helpers, one of the leading in-home care providers for seniors in the nation, has highly trained caregivers who can help spot danger zones in and around seniors' homes and can help seniors move around their env ironment more carefully. "Up to 30 percent of those who fall suffer injuries such as hip fractures or head traumas," says Peter Ross, CEO and co-founder of Senior Helpers. "Those types of injuries not only make it hard for seniors to live independently, but those injuries can sometimes be fatal. Our caregivers are there to provide families with the comfort that someone is w atching over their senior loved one and helping make sure they're living in a safe environment." Fall Prevention with Senior Helpers' Caregivers Exercise Regularly caregivers help choose activities that increase leg strength and improve balance in seniors, such as Tai Chi. Eye Check-ups caregivers make sure senior loved ones have their eyes checked by a doctor at least once a year and have their eyeglasses updated as needed. A good tip: consider getting a pair with single vision distance lenses for activities such as walking outside. Safety Proof the Home caregivers reduce tripping hazards in the home, make sure grab bars are installed in the tub/shower and next to the toilet, ensure stair railings are installed, and improve lighting throughout the home. Review Medications caregivers have a doctor or pharmacist review medications/ prescriptions to let them know what may cause side effects, such as dizziness or drowsiness. "When seniors fall, they usually develop a fear of falling, even if they're not injured," says Ross. "That fear can easily turn into a senior choosing to limit their physical activity which in turn increases their risk of falling again. That's where our caregivers come in; they help to prevent falls and help seniors cope with fall-related fears they may already have." Did You Know? In 2008, 82 percent of fall deaths were among people 65 and older. In 2008, more than 19,700 older adults died from unintentional fall injuries. Fall-related fractures occur more than twice the rate for older women than for older men. More than 90 percent of hip fractures are caused by falls. And white women have signi cantly higher hip fracture rates than black women. Direct medical costs of falls equaled $28.2 billion last year alone. This story affects all seniors and their families in your area. Help us spread the word about Fall Prevention Awareness and our tips to keep seniors safe. We are happy to set-up local interviews and provide photos/video to move this story forward for your readers/viewers. Sources: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention About Senior Helpers: Senior Helpers connects professional caregivers with seniors who wish to live at home as opposed to a nursing or assisted living facility. The company has 300 franchises in 39 states and one in Canada offering a wide range of personal and companion care services to assist seniors living independently with a strong focus on quality of life for the client and peace of mind for their families. Senior Helpers strives to be the leading companion and personal care provider that offers dependable, consistent and affordable home care. For more information, please visit www.seniorhelpers.com. Fall Prevention Awareness LaBelle Heritage Museum is applying for a State of Florida Division of Historical Resources Small Matching Grant to help move the Rider Buildings currently at 150 South Lee Street on land leased from Hendry County to their location in the Downtown LaBelle Historic Business District at 360 North Lee Street. The museum group will request a waiver of the grant's dollar-for-dollar monetary match because LaBelle and Hendry County are REDI [Rural Economic Development Initiative] communities exempt from the normal matching requirements of this grant program. However, the museum does need community support for its grant request. The preliminary project budget indicates its cost w ill exceed the maximum $50,000 grant, and the museum will need to cover the excess. A match of 10 percent of all donations up to $50,000 hs already been pledged and received between now and next September, which adds as much as $5,000 for moving and setting up the Rider Buildings. The group also needs in-kind donations such as foundation site plans signed by a professional engineer, tree trimming, foundation piers and set up, and both plumbing and electrical hookups. So, chamber members and others willing to pledge in-kind donations of labor and/or materials as well as cash between now and the end of the grant period in June 2013 should contact us for information and pledge details. A new and active LaBelle Heritage Museum Complex at 360 North Bridge Street could help revitalize our local economy as well as highlight what it is that makes LaBelle special. Help museum move into new location

There are still a few slots open for players 10-14 years of age. Besides scoring for their team, their "goals" are for the players to have a good time, improve their skills and learn good sportsmanship. The league appreciates all the coaches, players and volunteers who work so hard to meet these goals. However, the cooperation of all parents is central to meeting them. All parents and spectators are encouraged to demonstrate the kind of sportsmanship that will help prepare their young players for the rest of their lives. Please remember, the children are watching you, too. Soccer time again by Jordan OdafferOn homecomeing night in Lake Placid the LaBelle Cowboys were not distracted by the pre-game festivities and posted their second district win of the season after defeating the Dragons 23-7 on a rain soaked Scarborough Field. The Cowboys started off fast and played v ery physically on the way to shutting down Lake Placid's standout running back A.J. Gayle. David Antunez set the Cowboys up w ith good eld position after he returned the kickoff to the 40. Danny Robinson picked up a rst down by running very physically and Ellis Johnson nished the drive with a 44y ard touchdown run. The following extra point snap was bobbled and the Cowboys had a 6-0 lead. On the following possession the Green Dragons moved the football until strong play by Luis Hernandez, Eduardo Gonzalez, Danny Robinson and others forced the Green Dragons to attempt a eld goal. On the attempt Senior Delindio Watson blocked the kick and Sophomore Eduardo Gonzalez recovered the kick. However, on their next possession the Cowboys failed to move the football and went three. After Antunez booted a 66-yard punt, the Green Dragons unleashed their physical rushing attack and drove down the eld to score on a quarterback sneak to take the lead 7-6. On the ensuing kickoff Antunez returned the ball into Green Dragon territory and the offense utilized their rushing attack to score a eld goal before the half to take the lead 9-7. After Antunez forced a touchback with his kick, Lake Placid took a knee and both teams went in for halftime. In the second half the rain continued, but so did the Cowboys' solid play. After kicking off, the Cowboy defense stale mated Lake Placid for the rest of the game. On the rst series of the half Junior Kip Stansly recovered a fumble at the Dragons 19-yard line and Junior Tyler O'Ferrell connected with Junior Devante Ray to extend the lead to 15-7. After Antunez's placement, the Cowboys led 16-7. On the following kickoff Stansly recovered Antunez's onside kick. The solid blocking of the offensive line opened up holes for Johnson and Robinson as they moved the Cowboys into striking distance. On third and goal O'Ferrell connected with David Antunez for the nal score of the game. For the last 18 minutes of the game the Cowboy defense substituted, but played solidly and kept the Dragons in check. There were other solid performances for the Cowboys. Big defensive plays were made by reserves Jeremiah Roman and Even Vasquez to end the game. Please support the Cowboys this Friday as the play Clewiston at home for Homecoming.JV Cowboys defeat Moore HavenThe JV Cowboys were paced by Scott Morrison, Jose Lopez, Bryce Godwin and Charles Chance on offense as they defeated the Moore Haven Terriers in the season nale for both teams. The JV Cowboy Defense was led by Jesus Cavazos and A.J. Ayala. Move Haven took a 12-0 lead on the strength of an interception return and a long cutback run, but the Cowboys responded with solid line play and by adjusting to the unique formations that the Terriers were utilizing. The Cowboys scored 21 unanswered points to take a lead that they would not relinquish. However, at the end of the game the Terriers scored on a long touchdown pass to cut the Cowboys lead to 21-18, but that is as close as they would get. The JV scores were made by Scott Morrison (rushing), Bryce Godwin (receiving) from Jose Lopez and by Charles Chance (rushing). This was a great way to put an exclamation point on the season and the JV Cowboys should be proud of how they handled numerous adverse situations this season. Go Cowboys! He should know, having eaten there daily at a small table by a west window for more than a decade. In fact, a small plaque there read: Reserved for George Milicevic. Flora and Ella’s was known all over for its famous pies and country charm with generous helpings and old fashioned seasonings (such as smoked pork in black-eyes peas). Snow birds are returning and questions are being asked: “What’s happened?” and “Where’s the crisp fried okra?” (Hold on, crisp, fried okra has returned to the menu!) Flora and Ella’s is no more, replaced by new folks operating under the name “A Country Place, Restaurant and Bakery.” It’s in the same building and location; still a family business, albeit not the same family. The new operators are incorporating the same friendly, come-as-you-are atmosphere. The inside has been completely refurnished but essentially the layout is the same the big, cheery dining room with new window dressings through which LaBelle’s stunning sunsets can be enjoyed and the big over ow room for private affairs. The bakery is to the left as you enter and features all sorts of baked delicacies made fresh every day. A daily ritual is the gathering at the round table where men of the morning come every day to bring each other upto-date on current events. And then, there’s the cooked-to-order country breakfast. These breakfasts are as much a part of the Country Place as the big live oaks that shade the sprawling porch with its friendly comfortable rockers. “To all and everything there is a season...” And so it is the same with the beloved eater y Flora & Ella’s. As Mr. Milicevic says, “You are not forgotten, nor will you every be.” The caring and dedicated work of the Danny and Sherry Mazzarello Family represents the hope that the restaurant will continue to thrive and to be the joyous centerpiece of LaBelle. Not forgotten, the centerpiece of LaBelle is changed
