Thursday, October 27, 2011 50¢ Plus tax V ol. 89 No. 43 by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle Faith can move mountains. We’ve all heard that expression many times. Sometimes, we are privileged to actually see faith at work. Teresa McKenzie has been a believer for many years. She never thought she’d be caught in a dark, forbidding place that threatened to engulf her. After all, she was intelligent and strong, with a solid family foundation. Still, she lost control over her life and very nearly lost her life itself. Today, she is nally back in the light, knowing that it was her faith, her family and friends that sustained her. You see, on Jan. 24 of this year, Teresa’s world fell apart. The man she loved turned on her and she found herself paralyzed. At age 39, it seemed her career as a registered nurse was over. Indeed, she faced the prospect of living life as a paraplegic. A large, powerful, angry young man, her boyfriend lost his temper and pushed her down in an argument after a party. According to Teresa, she was pushed down on the oor, her legs forced up over her head, subjecting her neck to additional force which caused her injury. She knew immediately what that sickening crack and subsequent inability to move meant. As a nurse, she understood the impliDomestic violence: Back from a hard, dark place Submitted photosTeresa is pictured with her sister, who stuck by her side 100 percent. Teresa’s hero drove her to outpatient rehab in Fort Myers 3 times a week. Submitted photosTeresa Mckenzie returned to Lee Memorial rehab after a month of being discharged walking with walker. She had been discharged in a wheelchair. Caloosa Humane Society’s Second Annual Peace Love & Paws Gala was a beautiful evening and a huge success for the all of the homeless pets at the shelter. We thank all of the wonderful sponsors and volunteers that made this evening such an amazing event! The Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Craig Bartoshuk. Craig is the most loving giving man and has made a difference like no other in the lives of the animals at Caloosa Humane Society. Craig has walked dogs, built the Swamp Cabbage Float, almost single-handedly painted the inside of the shelter, plays a vital role on spay/neuter days, supports beauti cation projects and has any tool that might make a job easier. We thank Craig from the bottom of our hearts for giving so much of himself so the animals at the shelter have what they need. We thank everyone that attended the gala and supported our cause of continuing to care for all of those homeless animals that cannot care for themselves. Her neck was broken. Her C6 and C7 vertebra were damaged. She would probably never walk again. After all the pain, all the fear he exacted on her, Teresa was a paraplegic. Later, her attacker came to her while she w as in rehab to apologize. Nothing new. Teresa said he often apologized for his violence against her after the fact. It never kept him from striking or strangling her again. It didn’t stop the mental and emotional abuse. It didn’t stop the threats against her and her family. It didn’t keep him from driving a wedge between Teresa and her family in any way he could. He still cut her off from her friends by taking her phone away when she got home from work. After that terrible night in January that nearly cost her everything, Teresa nally found the strength to turn away from this man. Even more challenging, she had to dig deep inside herself and inside her faith to face this new life. She put everything she had into her physical therapy and against all odds gradually began to improve. At rst, she moved a nger. But Teresa didn’t stop. Her motor skills kept getting better until nally, less that nine months after her injury, she is about 95 percent back to her old self and continuing to improve. The doctors were amazed. They had never seen anyone with this type of injury improve that way. “I never really believed I wouldn’t walk again,” Teresa said. “I always stayed positive. I have a strong will. I knew I could do it.” She knew her family needed her and she knew her God would help her. “I was left to die,” she recalls. “I had to rely on the faith my mother instilled in me in all of us. It made me push three times harder.” Teresa admits she had a couple breakdowns along the way, but they didn’t dampen her spirit for long. She took a huge negative and made a positive come out of it, she said. With her feet rmly planted back on the ground and her heart in her love of God and family, Teresa said she now wants to ght for others who have been in her place. She feels led to speak to and for victims of domestic violence and for those with spinal cord injuries. She wants to visit with other Lee Memorial Rehab patients and work with the Spinal Cord Association. To others who may fall into the trap she did, Teresa has some advice for identifying abusers before it’s too late. She said they are unusually caught up in your world. They’re jealous and controlling. These signs may be subtle, she notes, but they are there. They probably don’t have a good relationship with their own family and will try to isolate you from yours. They are aggressive it may be verbal at rst, but it will escalate. You must report it when it happens, she said. You can’t hide it. After each attack they will apologize, promise it will never happen again, but it won’t be long before it does happen again and they will likely even have you believing it was your own fault. She warns: A batterer cannot be saved by the person he abuses. These people have inner problems they need to face with professional help. “I’m a nurse,” she said, “and I’ve seen this, but I still found myself in an abusive relationship. When it happens you have to leave. Don’t tell your abuser you’re going to leave. Go to your family or a shelter. File for a restraining order immediately. Relocate. Her ex-boyfriend, Tony Wilson, is in prison, sentenced to three years for felony battery, as well as sale of cocaine and possession of cocaine. When he gets out, Teresa feels sure he’ll try to get to her. “He’s got a lot of anger,” she said. He’s to be released Feb. 22, 2014. When that happens, Teresa said she will be noti ed and she will be nowhere near Florida when it does. “I don’t hate Tony,” she said, “but I’ll never give him power over me again.” She’s putting her faith in many safeguards the law has for domestic violence victims. She has a lifetime restraining order against him and is in contact with a victim’s advocate. Her family is behind her 100 percent and “he knows I’m not afraid of him,” she said. She feels that her fear kept him going. It drove him. Now she’s proud that she stood up to him; that she didn’t let him win. Now, Teresa is looking forward to being a voice for women who have lost their lives to batterers. Teresa has come so far in such a short time, but her story keeps getting better. She’s even been reinstated at her job as a traveling nurse beginning next month. Teresa still has some pain in her hands, but it’s improving and also some left side de cit, but is nding ways to work around that. She takes pride in the fact that she’s the only patient with those injuries her amazed doctors have seen get to this point. She continues to cherish her God and her family and friends, and the improbable recovery they have helped her achieve. by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle Previous to the regular meeting the board, sitting as the Local Planning Agency (LPA) recommended passage of the “Historical Tree Protection” ordinance. This was a major revision of the city’s code and is intended to further protect and encourage enhancement of the city’s tree canopy. City Planner Shellie Johnson said it is an attempt to help attract business to town by supporting the canopy and making it more affordable for developers. The number of trees required for planting is to be based on zoning categories and includes the size of trees and buffer requirements. The downtown walking area will not be treated the same way, Ms. Johnson said. The commissioners opted to wait till their November 10 meeting to pass the ordinance. As part of the ordinance, the commission agreed to become part of the Tree City USA movement. Three residents will be appointed to serve on this board. The increase in water rates will be on the Nov. 10 LaBelle City Commission agenda for a nal vote. The xed demand commodity water rates are set to increase 20 percent across the board, not including meter repairs and locks. Wastewater rates will go up by ve percent. Board Chairman Darrell Harris said LaBelle business owners are on board with the increase to speed up the completion of the new Sports complex on Forrey Ave. However, the county board has yet to make a nal decision. Although he said he is not opposed to the complex, Commissioner Tris Chapman declared, “In my mind, it should be self supporting.” Commissioner Karson Turner also expressed concerns about such an increase, comparing it to “opening Pandora’s box.” The board will continue to study the proposal with a public hearing for December.Software, 800 MHz radio systemTwo loans, one for software for the Property Appraiser’s Of ce and one for phase one of the required 800 MHz radio system, were approved. To emphasize the message of Breast Cancer Awareness, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life is renaming the month of October to give a little attention to early detection and regular screenings for all women. Thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, more and more women are surviving breast cancer. The ve-year survival rate for women with breast cancer today is 90 percent, up from only 63 percent in the 1960s. Breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the US, and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. The American Cancer Society research program is relentlessly pursuing the answers to save even more lives. Communities all over the country (and in several other countries) participate in Relay For Life to raise funds to ght cancer. Relay For Life gives everyone across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and ght the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events and 18 hours in length. Relay For Life of LaBelle will be held on March 31 and April 1 at LaBelle High School. The theme for this year is "One World One Cure." No matter where you are, there's a place for you at Relay. Make a difference. Start your own team or make a donation. We are creating a world with more birthdays. The 2011 Relay Sponsors were: Salazar Machine & Steel, Inc., Whisper Creek RV Resort, Calvin's Cooling Corp., Disabled American Veterans and LCEC as well as man y other sponsors who gave in-kind donations of materials. Please join Relay. For more information, contact the American Cancer Society at 941627-3000. ‘Octobra’: formerly known as October time to join Relay for Life 4 Caloosa Belle October 27, 2011 Child Labor Lawsby Matt KindermannThe school year is settling into routine and preparations for homecoming are concluding. This time of the year many teenagers and parents are being confronted with the high costs of pictures, graduation portfolios, invitations, senior events, school trips and fundraisers. I remember nickel and diming mom and dad for $20 here, $50 there and that wasn't even for gas or lunch money. My rst job was washing dishes part time and the restaurant where I worked at closed at 10 p.m. Cleaning the kitchen took another hour and a half usually and this, as many teenagers similarly face, was my rst experience with Child Labor Laws. According the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), Child Labor Laws exist to protect minors and encourage them to remain in school. DBPR has work restrictions for the two categories of children: 14-15 years old and 16-17 years old. Minors under 14 are not allowed to work at all, and those 18 and over have no restrictions. Any employer that employs anyone under the age of 19 is required to keep a simple record of birth dates for those employees. When school is out of session for the summer, the 14-15 year old category are limited to working no more than eight hours a day and 40 hours a week, and cannot work before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m. There are no hour restrictions for 16+ category during summer break. However, no minor can work more than six consecutive days in any one week and may only work for four hours before receiving a 30 minute uninterrupted break. In-school session periods of the year are more restricted and no minor is allowed to work during school hours. For the 14-15 category during the school year, they are allowed to work up to 15 hours a week. On a school night they cannot work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m., and are restricted to three hours a day. On a non-school night, they can work up to eight hours a day, for a total of 18 hours a week, but only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. For the 16-17 category during the school year, they are allowed to work up to 30 hours a week but not before 6:30 a.m. or after 11 p.m., and not more than eight hours a day on a school night. On non-school nights, there are no maximum hour restrictions. Some minors are eligible for a work hour waiver due to being married, emancipated, graduated from high school or holding a GED, or those that are enrolled in a high school work program. Minors can also independently apply for an hour exemption from their school district or by application to Florida's Child Labor Compliance of ce and employers will need to maintain a copy of such waiver, if granted. There are many restrictions on the type of work a minor can perform and certain industries that are off limits, mostly having an element of danger including, but not limited to, working with explosives, demolitions, gasses, corrosives and heavy equipment. A complete list of restricted occupations can be found at the US Department of Labor website at www.dol.gov/ elaws/ sa.htm. This article in not conclusive and employers are encouraged to read the Florida Child Labor Laws which can be found at www.my oridalicense.com and clicking on "Our Businesses and Professions," then "Division of Regulations." Scripture readingPsalms 138:2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name for Your loving kindness and Your truth; for You have magni ed Your word above all Your name. Last week the whole Bible was read out loud at Barron Park, from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. We had a lot of variation in the weather during that time: rain, wind, tornado watch, cold weather (52¡F), and a beautiful autumn Friday. We had people from various churches participate in this event locally, as others around the nation and other countries of the world also read the Word out loud. If God Almighty has placed the Words of the Bible to a higher place than His name (Psa. 138:2), how much more should we, His children, ought to honor His Word as well. Those of us who participated in the reading were touched and blessed by the privilege and honor of proclaiming His Word to the atmosphere in our neighborhood. His Word is Spirit and Life, so we believe and expect the Spirit of God to manifest His presence and His life in our lives and our community in a greater measure. On behalf of Life Ministries Church, I want to thank those Pastors who received our call to the reading of the Word and joined in our efforts of recruiting readers. And I also want to thank those of you who heard, or read about the event on our local newspaper (Caloosa Belle) and responded to the call and volunteered to read. Our faith is that God will honor those who honored His Word. It was an honor to be side by side with brothers and sisters proclaiming His Word. May the Lord richly bless you and yours. The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace. Briefs by Pat DobbinsThe “Memory Bus” is one of the Alzheimer Association’s initiatives and is a mobile clinic open to anyone concerned about their memory or that of a family member or friend. It is an innovative way of bringing the issues of memory loss and dementia to the public and has travelled county wide. The simple test takes a few minutes to detect the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s. It is not only for seniors but for people of all ages. No appointments are necessary. The memory bus will be parked at the Glades County Health Department Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The Glades County Health Department is located at 1021 Health Park Drive, Moore Haven. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in 14 people over the age of 65 has some form of dementia and that number can increase to one in 6 for those over the age of 80. Early diagnosis and care for people with dementia, as well as educating those that care for them, is one of the strategic priorities for improving a person’s health and wellbeing. Tiredness, stress, depression and certain medications can all affect memory. The important thing is for people to see k help if they have any concerns. This event will allow people to talk, in con dence, with an expert. The national number is 1-800272-3900 for Alzheimer’s Association. Memory bus coming to Moore Haven

Both girls' parents were committed as well with both dads coaching and moms always supporting their teams at every level. Both were standout players at the high school level as well, for four years they were xtures on the LHS varsity softball team, w inning two district titles and one regional championship on a team that reached the state nal four in 2005. Both players were News Press All Area Team nominees during their LHS careers. LHS and college softball is a tradition with the Blake and Raulerson families. Heather's older sister, Paige, played at LHS and later played college softball at FGCU and her younger sister, Gennifer, is a senior at LHS this year. She will attend and play for South Florida Community College next year. Dani's older sister, Shelly, played softball at LHS and later played at Central Florida Community College and the University of North Dakota. Heather and Dani chose to attend Florida Southern College over other colleges because of the great academic and athletic tradition. At FSC Dani and Heather played big rolls throughout their college softball careers with both players garnering honors for their play. In 2009 Heather was voted to the NCAA South Region All Tournament team when she hit .500 at the NCAA South Region Tournament in Valdosta, Georgia. In 2011 Dani was honored with Sunshine State All Conference honors after she hit .360 during her senior year at FSC. Defensively, the girls were four year starters with Heather at catcher and Dani at shortstop and center eld, both were among the conference leaders in elding percentage at their positions. For their work in the classroom both girls were on the Sunshine State Conference commissioners honor roll and scholar athlete award winners on several occasions. Whether it was at the LaBelle Little League softball eld, Dixie Youth, high school or travel tournaments throughout the state of Florida, Blake and Raulerson's softball careers followed the same path from second grade until the two played their nal college softball game together in Lakeland on April 29 of this year. The following day the two LHS grads walked across the stage at the Lakeland Center receiving their college diplomas together. Dani graduated from FSC with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology and will continue her education while pursuing her Doctorate in physical therapy from Florida International University in Miami. Heather graduated from FSC with a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing and now lives in Lakeland, where she is a Registered Nurse in the emergency room at Lakeland Regional Hospital. As Dani and Heather move on to the next chapter in their lives they will go their separate ways and when someone asks the girls about their time playing on the same teams and going to school together they just say "best friends since second grade!"
