The city commission held a public hearing on increasing the xed demand commodity water rates 20 percent across the board, not including meter repairs and locks. Wastewater rates are up ve percent. The increase is aligned with the city's agreement with the USDA. The increase in rates is part of the arrangement for RUS funding to build the new reverse osmosis water plant. To ensure repayment of the loan, rate increases must eventually reach 90 percent. The city plans to increase rates incrementally over several years rather than almost double them at one time. The resolution is set to be passed at the Nov. 10 city commission meeting. by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle Hendry County Board of County Commissioners has begun taking on one o f its biggest and most far reaching chores redistricting. By law, the governmen t districts must be redrawn every ten years, after the census, to re ect changes in th e population distribution. Redistricting mus t be completed by the end of December. At the October 11 commission meeting, County Attorney Mark Lapp recalled a bit of county history for the board. A federal lawsuit going back to 1991 requires Hendry to set up the Harlem are a as a "minority plurality." There are several such counties in Florida. Districts are to be set up so that ther e is no more that a ten percent population difference between the most and leas t populous districts. There are several redistricting proposals in front of the county commission, prepared by County Attorney Lapp and Supervisor of Elections Lucretia Strickland. Ms. Strickland explained her choice fo r the best redistricting plan She feels it's best to simply netun e two districts, straightening some jagged boundary lines between districts and making sure interior communities lik e Pioneer Plantation and LeDeca are represented as a whole, not divided between more than one commissioner. She said this plan ensures that the ve districts ar e as equal as possible in population. Several districts will exchange some territory to even things out. The board will have several opportunities to work its way through the proposals. Ms. Strickland is to have her netuning Voting districts evolving Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantSmiles all aroundLaBelle Chamber of Commerce President Maureen Jordan and Director Lamar Youmans, center, were all smiles at the annual chamber banquet Monday, Oct. 17. Although Citizen of the Year Meredith Marcum could not be present, Oscar Langford accepted the Business of the Year award for his dealership, Langford Ford. The award recognized many decades of generosity and service by Langford Ford and staff to the community of LaBelle. 2 Caloosa Belle October 20, 2011Mayor Paul Puletti said he realizes this is a big increase, but it will give residents good w ater. He said the board lowered property taxes recently, anticipating this increase.Bike FestCommissioners approved the American Legion Riders’ request to operate a Bike Fest for the second year. The event is planned for Saturday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Barron Park. Some 1,500 bikers are expected to come to the event, with 1,000 motorcycles. Once again, beer will be available at the event along with live music and bike games. Beer will be sold under the American Legion Post 130 permit only through the pav ilion and in cups of a certain color so consumption can be monitored and contained to the park. Park Ave. will be closed from Bridge Street to Lee Street for the event.Urgent care center comingThe city commission approved a special exception to allow a new urgent care health facility to move in at 981 Anvil Way, off Cowboy Way. Owner Micke y Jones said his O p timum Rehab Systems is already in business in LaBelle and he also owns the Convenient Care Center of Lehigh. With the board’s approval, Mr. Jones expects to open the new urgent care center in a few weeks. Originally planned as an industrial park, this section already is home to the South Florida Work Force, Goodwill Job Link and Edison State College’s vocational education complete and turned in to the commissioners by October 25. The board is planning a joint meeting with the school board Nov, 8 at 5 p.m. in Clewiston City Hall. Final adoption will be in December The county and school districts do not have to coincide but they have been in past years for clarity and ease. Once the redistricting is complete, the Supervisor of Elections will combine voting districts to form “super precincts.” This is a cost cutting move that will reduce the number of polling places as well as the number of poll workers necessary. The January 31 Presidential Preference v ote will be held according to the current districts. The new district plan will be in place for the August 12 Primary. The General Election will be Nov. 6 of next year. Ms. Strickland also took the opportunity to encourage residents to take advantage of early voting to avoid long lines at the polls.East County RecThe board listened to allegations of “gross mismanagement” with regard to some $60,000 in recurring expenses for the East Hendry Rec District budget. County Administrator Judi KenningtonKorf explained that, by law, all government budgets must be balanced and provided a quick overview of the district’s history. In 2002-03 two separate MSBUs, Harlem and East County, merged into the East County Rec District. At that time, there was approximately a $30,000 difference between their budgets. In 2008 the BOCC provided both the West and East Rec Districts with a $100,000 appropriation and offered each a loan of $100,000. The West Rec District declined the offer; the East Rec District accepted it. MSBUs are self funding. That is, all the assessments collected for that MSBU must be used there, for their intended purpose. However, Ms. Kennington-Korf explained that the amount of money in an assessment is not necessarily the amount you get. For instance, in years past USSC used to donate to East Rec. That doesn’t happen any more. On the negative side, East Rec residents have not all paid their entire assessment, leaving a de cit. For several years, the board has made up for these de cits in the East Rec District budget through the general fund. In 2007-08 the East Rec District logged about $60,000 in delinquent assessments. The county has made up for this de cit, mainly with the general fund. Of ce of Management and Budget Director Jennifer Davis said the East Rec District’s budget had approximately $54,000 in delinquent taxes in 2007 and 2008 that have contributed to the overall balance. Every year during the budget process, Ms. Kennington-Korf said the board discusses East Rec’s funding issues and concerns. The Board, Ms. Kennington-Korf and Ms. Davis are continuing their efforts to sort out the many contributing factors surrounding the East County Rec’s budgetary issues. A workshop will be held at 4 p.m. November 8th at the Clewiston City Hall. A rrest Reports Beware of electronic spikes and lullsWelcome to another edition of Computer Corner, the place to go for valuable tips aimed at keeping your computer healthy and hopefully saving you money. Feel free to write to us at computercorner@cprtools. net you might just see the answer to your question in the Caloosa Belle! This week we'll discuss the importance of protecting your system from spikes and lulls in electricity. We're all used to the occasional glitch in the ow of energy from the power company especially here in southwest Florida. Did you know that our computers and other electronics are very sensitive to this and need to be protected? Power spikes, lightning strikes, gentle brown-outs or just the sudden everything's on' after a blackout can all do damage to a computer system. Any piece of electronic equipment, from computers to televisions, stereo equipment, etc..., should be protected. It's easy to do and while the solution does cost a bit of money, the amount you'll spend now will be FAR less than if you had to replace the equipment being protected. Battery backup units with surge protection are the way to go. There are many on the market, and you should use common sense when purchasing one for your equipment. Manufacturers like APC, TrippLite, CyberPower and others, all offer these battery backup systems. They're meant to give you a few minutes of uninterrupted power so that you can turn off the equipment when there's an outage. Most also include surge protection that can help smooth out the power ow as it reaches your equipment. Some even come with an insurance policy for your computer! A little research and small cost now can really help save you heartache (and cash) later. Next week, Computer Corner will talk about operating system updates and why they're important. Protection necessaryTo the Editor:All of us believe what we learn to believe, the same is true with this writer; admittedly. Almost all Conservatives and Libertarians believe that we have too much government control and regulation, but control and regulation is a very important form of protection for the American people. It is being demonstrated throughout the country that there is greater wealth inequality today than there has ever been before. Ninety- ve percent of all the wealth is owned by only one percent of our population. I felt proud that for the last seventy- ve years that our economy has functioned very well with a balance of both capitalism and socialism; an untold truth. Most of us have been totally in favor of having private property, but at the same time having public schools, libraries, roads, police, military, Social Security; etc. Today there is no fair and equal balance in the inter-operation of the two systems and our economy is on the brink of collapse. Much of the wealth imbalance that we have is the result of wealth that was acquired through pro t from investment interest that has been made by pro ting on other people's labor, goods and services; this is money that is made on money itself instead of directly through pro ts from actual labor, goods and services. It is ctitious wealth that has nothing to do with how productive our nation is. There is much disenchantment and unrest in our society, many people are suffering in ways that we previously thought unimaginable. Hopefully we will be able to pull through our present dif culties in a uni ed and peaceful manner. One of the Republican candidates for president has essentially said, "If you don't have a job, then it's your fault." But another point of view presented is a polar opposite. President Obama is not able to do by himself what Congress and America will not do. James ThatcherKudos to Mr. Darrell Bair, reference “Bring Lawmaking back to the citizens” published 10-6-2011I agree totally with your correct observation about some of our government leaders. They act like the boys up on the Beltway, the voters and tax payers don't want more spending but it goes to deaf ears. The County has been chopping bene ts, lowering salaries and all kinds of other negative issues on its workers and crying poor mouth. Now they buy a building for $595,000 and it comes off the tax roll so we lose $20,000 plus per year in taxes. This money came out of the disaster fund, guess the powers to be decided that there will be no disasters allowed in Hendr y County, cause we done spent da money! They had ten years to get on board with the 800 MHz system, but waited till recentl y to decide what to do, so the money that was there years ago, was spent on more important things, and now in the worst economic crisis they nd money ($287,000) or take it from other needed places to accomplish what should have been done years ago. These people are bordering on the genius status. Now they have so much money they give Clewiston $50,000 for the Clewiston East rec District, with the orders "to x your nances by next year." Are you kidding me? Hendry Count y government is telling another agency to x something, especially money matters. Really! I guess my math is off. The County says buying the old Alico building is saving $300,000 a year. Well that might be true in year three, since the rst twi years savings of $300,000 each will just cover the cost of the Alico building, ($595,000) not including the lost taxes, and not including any disaster that might happen in the next year. Guess that's "new math the govement way," and with this crew in charge who knows what they'll buy with all that $300,000 saving each year. You can bet the farm it will not go into any saving account for the future. As soon as the new Ball Park, Pool, Play area and Gol f course on Forrey Drive are done, the economic crisis will be over. People will be standing in line to play gol f and hang around LaBelle. I assume that the Davis Pratt Community Ball Park off Cowboy Way has outlived its usefulness, and we needed to spend tax money on new things. Oh, then there's the old we'll apply for a grant idea. Fuel goes up, food cost goes up, Utilit y rates go up, property values go down, salaries are reduced or stay the same, bene ts are reduced or the cost goes up but, hey, let's spend tax dollars and not worry about the small things. Applicationsby Matt KindermannAccording to Monster.com, submitting ve applications a day will net 2-8 interviews a week; which can be thought of by saying you will get, on average, one interview for every six applications. There are several ways to improve these odds including: having a professional resume, targeting your job search, submitting a dynamic cover letter, working your contact network and returning a quality application. However, like the lottery, you won't win if you don't play; so apply, apply, apply! Whether it is an old fashion' paper application or a modern electronic application, the rules for submitting a quality application for employment are similar. First, do not leave any blanks. Even that block that asks if you have ever been known by another name, write N/A or, more appropriately, write out Not Applicable. Make sure to capitalize the rst word of every block and use proper pronunciation and grammar. Have someone you trust read the entire application before you send it to double check for errors. Second, never answer "no" or "none" to questions that ask if you have a certain skill or experience. Even if you do not, give something. For instance, if an application question asks "List your arc welding experience," but you only have Tig experience, give an example of your skills such as: "Over a year of welding experience using Tig techniques to tack red iron and sheet metal on commercial projects." Do not let the lack of certain skill or experience prevent you from submitting an application. Let the employer decide if they don't want to talk to you, don't do this for them. Submitting a paper application has its bene ts for both applicants and employers. For employers, you'll quickly be able to assess the applicants' writing, organization and direction following abilities. Having a clean looking application, with all the required documentation neatly organized, speaks of the candidates intangible qualities. Applicants also have an advantage with written applications and can make several copies, using one as a working draft for practice, and a second copy as a nal product which is free from error. If you have horrible handwriting, ask someone who has ne writing skills to write the nal product from your draft. If you can nd a typewriter, type the nal copy instead of hand writing it, but do not submit with correctional tape or uid. If you had to use correctional tape, make a copy of the application to hide the corrections and sign the copy. A signature should never be copied! Submit the application in the following order: cover letter, resume, application and supporting/required documentation such as transcripts, reference letters or copies of your driver's license and birth certi cate if applicable. Go the extra mile by enclosing the packet in a report cover which can be purchased for less than a dollar at any of ce supply store. Never fold the packet, and if you have to mail it, mail it in a large envelope remembering to stamp "do not fold" on the front. Print the address on the envelope using an address label, never hand write it. Remember, from the point where the application is delivered to a hiring manager, your application is under scrutiny and is being considered against many others! If it shows that you don't care about the application, why should an employer care about reading it? For more help or for answers to any other questions, call me at 863-675-1412 or e-mail mkindermann@sw works.org. C a r e e r C o r n e r Career Corner Matthew Kindermann

Kelley has announced that Andrew McAvoy and Conor Coderre have been recognized in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top ve percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.” Two LHS seniors earn National Merit recognition

Experienced cowboys and cowgirls from all around came out to test their saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, calf roping, break away roping, team roping, bareback bronc riding and bull riding skills. It all happened at the LaBelle Rodeo Grounds on SR 29S. Imagine a stunning sports complex w here the youth of LaBelle could unite to build teamwork skills, sportsmanship and respect for teammates through various athletics. This is the hope of LaBelle Youth Athletics (LYA), Incorporated, an organization comprised of many business and community members devoted to providing these opportunities through facilities for our local y outh. The project began in November 2006 w ith the formation of the LYA organization. The group consists of many local businesses, volunteers and community members who may not have children involved, but do have a heart set on providing safe and enjoyable recreational facilities for all of our children. Baseball, basketball, football, soccer and softball elds are included in the plans for the sports complex. Countless hours were spent in planning and preparing for the site. Once the nonpro t organization was established, plans w ere submitted and donations sought. A site was approved, and the Forrey Road property became the new home of the complex. As planning commenced, the complex began to take shape in 2010. Federal and state grant money continues to support the stages of growth for the complex. However, these weren't the only contributors to the site. Special recognition for the project is deserved by many of our very own community members. Financial contributors include: A Duda & Sons, The Liquid Plant, Lazy H Baits and U. S. Sugar Corporation. Jobco, Chad Mudge Hedging & Mulching; Cooper Hauling; Barraco and Associates; Boy, Miller, Kisherm and Perry; Paul Inc.; and Lou Marrotti donated volunteer hours and work efforts. In addition, LaBelle High School computer class students Angel Luna and Miguel Rodriguez have given their time to maintain the organization's Web site. "We were fortunate enough to gain a great deal of grants, donations and volunteers in the initial stages of planning," said Ricky Bass, (President, LYA). "However, we still require further contributions to make this dream a reality for our children of Hendry County. The City of LaBelle, Hendry County Commission and Hendry-LaBelle Recreations Department have helped a great deal with their support of the complex from the beginning." Community members interested in making this dream a reality are necessary to complete this centerpiece for our community. Individuals interested in the "Brick Fund Raising Project" listed on Web site below can purchase an engraved brick for $100 with family name to be placed at entrance of complex. An additional $2 million will be required to build the additional phases of the project. Those willing can contact Ricky Bass at 863.673.1940. More information about the complex can be found at www.labelleyouthathletics. com. Homecoming Week begins on Monday, October 31, and ends with our annual Homecoming Dance on Saturday, November 5. Each day at LHS will be special with theme days, trivia contests and nighttime events. Halloween Monday is Costume Day. It should be a “spooktacular” day as students and faculty are invited to dress up in their favorite costume. Ghosts and witches should be out early on this day. Remember, though, no attached masks as we want to see who you really are! Tuesday is Pajama Day. Wear your favorite, but school appropriate, bedtime apparel. Slippers are ne but let’s leave the pillows at home! Wednesday is the always popular Sports Day. Wear your favorite team’s clothing and support your favorite team. Rivalries will be front and center today! On Thursday, we are introducing a new theme day at LHS. We are calling it Rubix Cube Day. The colors of the cube w ill be visible today as Seniors dress in blue, J uniors dress in Green, Sophomores dress in Yellow and Freshmen dress in Orange. Friday is traditionally Spirit Day and time to show your Cowboy pride. Proudly wear the red and white. There will be a pep rally in the afternoon in the gym with a chance for each class to show which class has the most school spirit. This is just the beginning, though, as we have a lot more planned for Homecoming W eek. Tuesday is a big sports day as the annual Boys VolleyBall and Girls PowderPuff football games are played. Bragging rights for the entire year are at stake in these events. Beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the LHS gym, the Freshman boys take on the Sophomore boys. W ho has the best team? The boys must win two out of three games to prove who is best. Come and nd out for yourself for the low price of a $2 admission fee. Be sure to stick around for the second set of games as the Senior boys take on the Junior boys. Starting time is approximately 5:15. These young men have met for the last two years, and this is the last chance for the Seniors. Who are the big dogs and who should have stayed on the porch? You are guaranteed at least fou rfun lled games and maybe six. Plus, if time allows, there will be a championship round to determine the best Boys VolleyBall team at LHS in 2011. Following the conclusion of the last VolleyBall game there is the extremely popular Girls PowderPuff football game. Game time is approximately 6 p.m. and will be played on the LHS football eld. The girls check their manners at the gate and come in ready to play hard. The action begins with the Freshmen girls taking on the Sophomore girls. The girls in class of 2015 get to play in the games for the rst time ever instead of just watching from the stands. Are they too much for the Sophomores? You can nd out for another small admission fee of $2. The nal game of the night features the Junior girls and the Senior girls. How hungry for v ictory are the Seniors in their last game? Are the Junior girls ready? Will there be a championship round? So many questions and they will all be answered on this funlled evening. Vendors will be selling hot dogs, Frito pies, drinks, baked goods and much more. Fun and food for the whole family! Friday will also be a very enjoyable part of Homecoming Week. During all lunches, we will have Karaoke in the cafeteria. Time to quit singing in the shower and show everyone what you can do! This is a fourth year we have provided this entertainment for the students and it is always a lot of fun. At 4:00 there will be the annual Homecoming Parade down Main Street and into Barron Park. There will be class oats, Homecoming Court members, an honored alumnus, and a few surprises. Come and join in the fun! At 7:30 the annual Homecoming football game will begin against arch rival Clewiston High School. Halftime will feature the introduction of the Homecoming Court and the crowning of the King and Queen. This is sure to be a very special night. Homecoming Week concludes Saturday night with the Homecoming Dance. Members of Student Government will transform the LaBelle High School cafeteria into the sweetest place on Earth. This year’s theme is “Candy Land.” It is a semiformal event and tickets go on sale October 26. Be sure to buy them before the Dance for the low price of just $15. each. The week of October 17-21 is recognized as National School Bus Safety Week. This year’s theme, “Be Aware-Know the Danger Zone,” reminds students to be cautious any time they must cross the street. Students need to cross where they can be seen by the school bus driver and they also need to watch for traf c. The greatest risk to our children is when they are outside the school bus. Student injuries and fatalities can occur as a result of motorists who attempt to pass a stopped school bus. “The school bus is a natural extension of the classroom and Hendry County school bus drivers frequently remind students how to ride and wait safely for buses.” Parents can help by regularly reinforcing the safet y message. Hendry County school bus drivers safely transport over 4,700 students each da y for a total of over 900,000 miles a year. We are very proud of their professionalism and remarkable efforts to transport our students every day. Motorists approaching a stopped school bus from either direction are required to stop 300 feet from the bus while students are boarding or exiting. Bus drivers will activate yellow warning lights prior to the stop to warn traf c, and will display red ashing lights and a stop sign while the bus is stopped. Motorists should be especially vigilant around any stopped school bus-with or without ashing lights. If a school bus is stopped on a road divided into four or more lanes, only the traf c driving in the same direction as the bus must stop. “While school buses remain the safest mode of travel on the nation’s highways, school bus crashes do occur. With the cooperation of motorists, parents, and children, we can all help make the school bus ride to and from school as safe as possible for our children, and make this a safe school year in Hendry County. We appreciate the dedicated drivers, bus attendants and our transportation maintenance personnel.” Rick Murph y Superintendent Public Notice NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR TAX DEED Chapter 197.512 Florida Statutes NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT County of Hendry, Florida, the holders of the following certi cate has led said certi cate for a tax deed to be issued thereon.
