Thursday, September 22, 2011 50¢ Plus tax V ol. 89 No. 38 by Patty BrantCaloosa Belle The Hendry Regional Medical Center board voted to increase its millage for 2011-12 from the current 2.9 mills to 3.901 mills. The current rate includes 2.47 mills in operating expenses and .42 in debt service. The proposed 3.901 millage rate would include 3.261 mills for operating costs and .64 mills for debt. That is a 0.22 increase for debt service. If the hospital authority raises its millage to 3.9 mills, it will still remain within the one-mill increase limit approved by voters in the 2010 special election. That vote allows the hospital to repay debt service for the new emergency room in Clewiston and the Convenient Care Center in LaBelle with up to one additional mill in the district’s tax bill. For 2011, the hospital authority opted not to increase its millage rate in deference to community outcries. Before the countywide referendum was passed to allow the hospital to use one of its 2.9 mills in ad valorem taxes to build the new ER in Clewiston and expand the convenient care facility in LaBelle, the HRMC administration promised no new taxes. The referendum did pass, thanks to a Clewiston majority, but western count y voters have always been cool toward helping pay for a hospital they say the y rarely use. The steep decline in property values coupled with an increase in charity cases and bad debts are forcing the increase, according to HRMC CEO Lynn Beasley. He said bad debts are at $13 million for 2011 and are expected to be $14 million in 2012. The hospital authority will have its nal millage vote September 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room at Hendr y Regional Medical Center.County, city millageHendry County will set its nal millage rate on Sept. 27 the nal public hearing at 5:30 p.m. at the Courthouse in LaBelle. That rate has been tentativel y set at 7.2894. The City of LaBelle’s tentative millage rate has been set at 3.3810 for 2011-12. The nal public hearing was Sept. 21. Last year the Hall of Fame business, Nisbet Enterprises (McDonalds), was recognized for its continuing support of the community, and Jennings Hardware was honored on the occasion of its 100th anniv ersary. It is the oldest business in LaBelle still serving the public. The evening’s menu includes turkey, pork loin, dirty rice, green beans, cranberry sauce, salad and dessert. Space will be available for local organizations to highlight their community involvement, so let Sara know if y ou’d like to set up a display. Also next month, the chamber is putting on an Octoberfest/social Thursday, October 20, at Forrey’s Grill. Come to socialize with y our chamber friends and stay for the dinner special. The social will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Door prizes, naturally! On Friday, October 28, head on over to the chamber for a yummy lunch of Sara’s chicken and dumplin’s for just $7. Serving time 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Just one more thing. LaBelle’s special holiday event, Christmas in the Park, is set for Friday, Dec. 2, following the city-sponsored Christmas parade. Please help out with this very popular community effort to provide a special treat for LaBelle’s kids. Piles of that wintertime favorite snow is the big draw for kids and gives many parents a chance to watch their kids relive the kind of winter fun they had as children. It’s a great time for everyone with or without White Christmas memories. However, even Santa’s getting a little strapped in this economy and, unlike up North, snow in Southwest Florida is mighty expensive. If you can manage to make a donation for the snow this year, please call Sara at the chamber, 675-0125. One last item. Big thank yous go out to Calvin’s Cooling for xing the chamber’s A /C unit and to Bryan Beer for the new mini fridge. Your generosity is much appreciated. Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce has received a number of reports from citizens w ho have received phone calls attempting to solicit personal cardholder information. This method of fraud is called phishing. Consumers are being contacted by individuals who give the impression they work for nancial institutions and retailers. It is an elaborate and very polished attempt to steal money directly from your account. Victims have reported they are receiving calls during late night/early morning hours the caller identi es themselves as the Fraud Division and they need to con rm either an ATM or Credit Card number. The victim is then prompted to press 1 to continue. Calls are made to potential victims implying there is a problem with their debit/credit/ATM card or other issue needing personal attention and personal information. For example, “your check card has a hold on it. Press 1 to reactivate and enter your account number.” DO NOT RESPOND. Don’t fall victim to this scam. Phishing is when fraudulent attempts are made by phone or email that ask you to con rm personal information, including your PIN, passwords, credit card or debit card account numbers, expiration dates or other con dential information. When you are being targeted by a phishing scheme, the perpetrator “blasts” calls or emails to thousands of people knowing that a small percentage will respond; the fraud is set in motion when a consumer responds with personal information. The best way to avoid becoming a victim is DO NOT RESPOND. Reliable nancial intuitions or retailers will not ask for personal information or as k you to con rm personal information of an y kind in a phone call or email. Personal information is your PIN, passwords, credit card or debit card account numbers, expiration dates or other con dential information. Never share or verify any personal information over the phone or by email. HERES MY CARD!These locally-owned small businesses appreciate your support! Arrest Reports Entrepreneurshipby Matt KindermannIf you have ever thought about going into business for yourself, there are many pitfalls to think about; nancing, marketing, labor laws and licensing to name a few. Even franchising requires a large chunk of capital and a background that supports the corporate image. However, the advantages of owning a small business are exponential; realizing full profits, employment independence, creativity freedom and a host of other bene ts. In this economy, many will try to tell you that now is not the time to open a business but, now is also the time when you may not be able to nd meaningful work in your chosen career eld. Fortunately, there are options for those trying to make a go of it independently. The Southwest Florida MicroEnterprise Project is a regional consortium of business and banking professionals who annually take budding entrepreneurs and develop them and their dreams into successful start-ups, and they do it almost completely free of charge. For those of you with an idea for a new small business and who are in the low to moderate income level, are disadvantaged or who are unemployed or underemployed, apply to be a part of the next SWFL MicroEnterprise class here in LaBelle by going to www.sw micro.org and submit an application. The applications are reviewed by a committee and those selected will be invited to sit for the class. A one-time administration fee of $50 is required for those selected. The class is sponsored by Goodwill Enterprises and will run one day a week for 12 weeks. By the end of the program, you’ll have been helped in developing a clear business plan and will receive a certi cate of completion that can be used to help secure nancing to start your business. You will have also developed a personal relationship with local business professionals who can mentor and guide you through the start-up phase for any type of business. Seats are limited and classes start in October. It’s not too late to submit an application, so do it today! SCORE is also an association of business professionals who mentor new and existing entrepreneurs to develop or improve their business model. There are seven full time SCORE mentors in SW Florida, including one right here is LaBelle that can assist you in any aspect of running a business. SCORE is not for pro t service and periodically offers workshops locally for a wide variety of topics. To get in touch a local SCORE mentor for a face to face consultation, go to www. score.org and click on “Find a Chapter.” For any other entrepreneurial assistance you may have, call me at 863-675-1412 or e-mail me at mkindermann@sw works. org. Sagamore Ave Clewiston FL33440 AFINALDECISIONon the proposed tax increase and the budget will be made at this hearing. 4 Caloosa Belle September 22, 2011 by Les MorganThere is a great article that illustrates the concept of grace written by Charles Stanley. “One of my more memorable seminary professors had a practical way of illustrating to his students the concept of grace. At the end of his evangelism course he would distribute the exam with the caution to read it all the w ay through before beginning to answer it. This caution was written on the exam as well. A s we read the test, it became unquestionably clear to each of us that w e had not studied nearly enough. The further we read, the worse it became. About halfway through, audible groans could be heard throughout the lecture hall. On the last page, however, was a note that read, “You have a choice. You can either complete the exam as given or sign y our name at the bottom and in so doing receive an A for this assignment.” Wow! We sat there stunned. “Was he serious? Just sign it and get an A?” Slowly, the point dawned on us, and one by one we turned in our tests and silently led out of the room. When I talked with the professor about it afterward, he shared some of the reactions he had received through the years. Some students began to take the exam without reading it all the way through, and they would sweat it out for the entire two hours of class time before reaching the last page. Others read the rst two pages, became angry, turned the test in blank, and stormed out of the room without signing it. They never realized what was available, and as a result, they lost out totally. One fellow, however, read the entire test, including the note at the end, but decided to take the exam anyway. He did not want any gifts; he wanted to earn his grade. And he did. He made a C+, but he could easily have had an A. Dr. Stanley and I never had the same professor, that’s for sure. Every professor in every class I ever had in college, graduate school and seminary seemed to have one agenda – and that was to make you sweat bullets when it came time for exams. However, I am glad for Dr. Stanley and the lesson on grace he drives home by telling this story is a good one. We all need the grace of God for forgiveness. There were three preachers in a Starbucks Coffee shop and they were discussing the time when life began. They each gave their opinion of when life begins. One preacher said “Life begins when the child takes his/ her rst breath.” The other said “No,” then he nished, “It begins when the child is conceived.” But the last preacher said, “You both have the wrong answer! Life begins when the last child leaves home and the dog dies!” I am glad to say that life begins when you give your sins to Jesus. And when you come to an altar of repentance and you say... “I Need Thee, O, I Need Thee!” In the recent book, Speechless, Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman and his pastor, Scotty Smith, say this: “In the Gospel we discover we are far worse off than we thought and far more loved than we ever dreamed.” And that is so true. Our sin is often a great source of remorse, but the love of God and His mercy is far greater than all of it. That is the redeeming factor of the Christian faith! Recently I read the biography of Norman Grubb, a missionary in Africa and the leader of his mission for 30 years. I was struck by what he wrote: “At conversion we learned that we had not done what we should, but then we soon learn that of ourselves we cannot do what we should.” We need the enabling of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses to Jesus by lip and life on a daily basis. The same point is made in John Wesley’ life-changing experience. This personal change in Wesley happened at Aldersgate Street in May 1738. He acknowledges that he had become a true believer in justi cation by faith since the previous March and yet he knew he lacked something and was hungry for it. But at that meeting he said, “I felt my heart strangely warmed...” He had believed before, but now he had an assurance, he was given this direct, immediate, overwhelming experience and testimony by the Spirit, the sealing of the Spirit, and his ministry was transformed. He said that before this experience he had had the faith of a servant, but now it was that of a son. A man and his daughter went shopping for his wife’s birthday gift. It’s hard. It’s hard for a man to shop for his wife because a man usually isn’t clear on what his wife ma y want. Just ask any woman! This gentleman and his daughter had found the perfect gift: a nightgown. A lad y can always use a nightgown. It’s something that she can use every day. This one was very special. It had a tag on it that said “One Size Fits All.” His wife opened it up, and you know what? That tag was right. It ts all! It would have t him and her and all of the kids, too! – all at the same time! My point is simply this: if there ever was a gift that was given that is so large, and so great, that one size truly ts all it’s the gift o f eternal life; the gift of forgiveness of sins; the gift of salvation that comes through Jesus Christ our Lord. Trust Him by faith TODAY! No regrets.Dr. Les Morgan is pastor of Caloosa Baptist Church, located 200 yards behind A Country Place, on Highway 80 in LaBelle. The concept of grace, we all need it for forgiveness Les Morgan

It will not go away, we have had prejudice since the beginning of time. I don’t think our parents teach us to be prejudice, just like they don’t teach us to be drug users or alcoholics. Mine didn’t, in any event. I think you grow up, see and learn how people act, right, wrong or indifferent and from these life lessons one can have a natural prejudice toward people or issues. I spent eight years in the military, 16 y ears in law enforcement. I have had manual labor as well as managerial jobs. I’ve seen and heard prejudice in the rich, poor and middle class, the Court System, law enforcement, elected of cials. I’ve seen the race card. It’s everywhere and it ain’t going away. One would be naive to think that most people aren’t prejudice. Not all act on this issue, and most try and do the right thing. What w e do or how we act is what makes us the people that we are! The worst prejudiced act I remember was 9/11 and yes I wanted to imitate a similar action against the perpetators as did most of our nation. Naturally the federal government doesn’t know when to get out, so we have a ten-year war! About loving our neighbors and readjusting our attitudes! Whoa now! I live in America. I didn’t invite anyone to come here, and change how we did things for 200 years. We have a Constitution that everyone goes by, except the Congress and some Muslims that w ant Shariah law. Example: it’s okay for a Muslim in his 30’s or older to marry a niny ear-old girl without regard to her concerns. It’s okay for a Muslim to beat his female companion with a stick if she disobeys him. It’s their duty to eliminate you and your beliefs. So I have a problem with adjusting my attitude toward people that believe in this culture. I treat everyone with respect and dignity when I rst encounter them, then my attitude is in direct con ict, direct agreement or lackadaisical as to how the person acts. I happen to know Rock and have a great deal of respect for him, he seems to be a dedicated professional, caring, hard working person of Mid East descent, end of story. A s far as Abe saying the media is partly to blame by calling the terrorist, “Muslim Terrorist,” well, it is what it is. How England and the IRA report the news is of no concern to America or what they call the perpetrators of the crime. Just because England didn’t call the ERA “Christian Extremists” is of no concern to anyone. I don’t see anyone of Muslim faith standing up on the soapbox and denouncing the Muslim Terrorist Extremists, as Abe suggests that “Islam condemns such actions.” I’ve seen numerous Imams on our television and they are true politicians, they talk around the issue, they place blame on our government and military. I haven’t seen any of them condemning the extremists. Insulating people from prejudice will never happen. The Jews, A fricans, Yankees, Rebels, Gays, Politicians et al have this problem. It’s life. Not fair, but I’m still looking for that book on how life is supposed to be fair for everyone! George D. Bostick Jr. Letter to the Editor

Good day and welcome! That’s the feeling Ernesto and Maria Carmona, owners of the new restaurant La Margarita Tex Mex, have w orked hard to present their special Mexican cuisine in. There may be other Mexican restaurants, but La Margarita Tex Mex has a unique blend of avors from “The Valley” border area of South Texas and Mexico. This is the rst venture into the restaurant business for the Carmonas, but they have family pitching in as well as experienced staff. Ernesto has a small construction company, and worked for Duda for 21 years. Both required him to be away from home for long periods, which led him to look for an opportunity close to home. This restaurant encompasses that dream along with the chance to give LaBelle’s economy a boost. The restaurant is providing 14 locals with jobs, he said – “It’s a win-win” for Ernesto. Both Ernesto and Maria have their feet and hearts rmly in LaBelle. Ernesto is a LaBelle native and Maria is originally from Texas. She worked at LES for 17 years. Ernesto’s experience has been in administration. He’s an organizer, he said, so even without restaurant experience, he is sure that having the right people in the right places will prove to be the key to success for La Margarita Tex Mex. The Carmonas have blended family recipes from “The Valley” going back to and beyond their grandparents in Texas. Although Ernesto never lived there, some of his fondest memories are of visiting his grandparents there as a kid. “I always remembered the food,” he said, “and the family feeling.” That’s the feeling he wants to recreate in their restaurant. Big families have to make a little go a long way, he points out, and in “The Valley” the generations have come up with special sauces for meats and special seasonings. He is sure these generations-old recipes will be popular with LaBelle residents. Food from La Margarita Tex Mex is embedded with Southwestern avors like tomatillo verde, chile ancho, chile guajillo, cumin and cilantro. The Carmonas have enlisted the experience of two ne chefs, who also bring the avor of “The Valley.” “It’s the real stuff,” Ernesto said. He said they are very fortunate to have Antonia Fuentes in the kitchen for lunch and evening meals. She is from “The Valley” where Ernesto’s dad is from. She has worked at several local restaurants and brings her own special magic to the kitchen. Chef Isaac Rodriguez brings recipes from his mother, grandmother, and generations before as well as his own variations. La Margarita Tex Mex is not just for authentic Southwestern Texas cuisine, but also has a trendy side. Look for the “hot” new items coming from “The Valley,” like a baked potato stuffed with fajita meat, cheese and spices that is so popular there now. Isaac started cooking in 1995 in Texas. He was working construction when a friend got into the restaurant business. He gave Isaac a dishwashing job and he learned the business from there, working his way up to head cook. He said his recipes are always evolving; he’s always experimenting with food, perfecting his talents. Isaac describes their Tex Mex blend of spices as avorful, not necessarily “hot.” He’s looking forward to introducing LaBelle diners to La Margarita Tex Mex’s homemade sauces. Their distinctive avors can be ordered in mild, medium and hot. Isaac hopes people will especially enjoy his chicken fajitas and beef ribs. Speaking of specialties, you’ll want to try Maria’s mother’s bean soup. “Nobody doesn’t like Maria’s mother’s bean soup,” Ernesto beams. You’ll be glad to know that all La Margarita Tex Mex’s food is made from scratch – nothing is ever frozen or canned. Even the tortillas are handmade daily by several ladies who have perfected this dying art. Of course, if you don’t feel like Mexican food, you can order from their great American favorites as well. There is also a children’s menu. Pick up breakfast taquitos beginning at 6 a.m. The inside opens at 7 a.m. for breakfast. You can enjoy the same quality food from the buffet or menu. The kitchen closes at 9 p.m. but Friday and Saturday hours may be later. They plan to be open seven days. You can also call ahead and pick up meals for take out. What’s a great restaurant without great homemade desserts? Try La Margarita Tex Mex for tres leches (dessert made with three milks), an, fried ice cream and arroz con leche (a special rice pudding). La Margarita Tex Mex is located at 512 E. Cowboy Way. You can call 674-0675. Ernesto said the most important thing is that people feel welcome when they come in and that the food is really great. You be the judge. Get the avor of The Valley' at La Margarita Tex-Mex Caloosa Belle/ Patty BrantPictured from left: Ernesto and Maria Carmona with chef Isaac Hernandez.

by Coach Jordan OdafferThe Cowboys travelled to Lemon Bay this past Friday and fought valiantly in a 2014 loss. The Cowboys started out fast on their rst possession, but stalled in Lemon Bay territory on a fourth down attempt. After the rst quarter ended scoreless, Lemon Bay struck rst in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The Cowboys responded when Ellis Johnson caught a pass from Tyler O'Ferrell and raced up the left sideline to set up a Lenel Jones touchdown. Noel Gutierrez' extra point evened the score at 7-7. The Cowboys then kicked off to the Manta Rays, who drove the eld and scored to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. In the third quarter the Cowboys' defense held the Manta Rays scoreless and were paced by the stellar performances of Cathavius Adams, Luis Hernandez, Phillip Stansly, Pedro Rodriguez, Caleb Rimes and Noel Gutierrez. Early in the fourth quarter the Manta Rays extended their lead to 207, but the Cowboys kept the door open by blocking the extra point attempt. The Cowboys responded quickly with Sophomore running back Danny Robinson, who willed the Cowboys down the eld for a touchdown to cut the lead to 20-13. Gutierrez made the extra point, but the Cowboys were unable to recover the ensuing onside kick. The Manta Rays and Cowboys exchanged possessions for the rest of the fourth quarter until the time ran out on the Cowboys' bid for a comeback. READING A NEWSPAPER... School Briefs Do you know your credit score and how it affects you? Do you know how to dispute incorrect items on your credit report and repair negative ones? These issues and others will be discussed at the Understanding Your Credit Workshop to be held Monday, September 26, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the LaBelle Chamber of Commerce located at 125 Hickpochee Avenue in LaBelle. Many people don't realize that credit history affects more than just the interest rate on a loan for a house or a car. More and more, landlords, insurance companies, and even employers are reviewing credit reports before deciding to rent apartments, set insurance premiums, or even offer jobs to prospective employees. In the workshop, we will focus on how credit scores are calculated and what affects them. We will also cover how to dispute any incorrect information that appears on a credit report and strategies for repairing and rebuilding damaged credit. We will also discuss ways to establish credit for teenagers and young adults. The workshop will be offered by the Empowerment Alliance of Southwest Florida and is sponsored by Florida Community Bank. The Empowerment Alliance is a 501(c) (3) non-pro t organization and is a HUDapproved Housing Counseling Agency. It has been offering budget, credit and foreclosure prevention counseling in Immokalee and Hendry County for more than seven years. The workshop is free.
