Following the morning events there will be complimentary refreshments for all those attending at the park. A covered tent with limited seating w ill also be available. This memorial event was created after the tragic death of local service men, Chief Warrant Of cer Robert Hammett Jr. and Marine by Matt Ruch and Patty BrantCaloosa Belle The July 14 City Commission meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. with a quorum present. The rst public hearing regarding the South LaBelle Village Development of Regional Impact (DRI) was read and unanimously placed on nal passage for the Septembe r 8th City Commission Meeting. A report detailing the progress of LaBelle's newest water plan t and the state of LaBelle's curren t water treatment was delivered b y Tim Tayler of Applied Technolog y Management. Mr. Tayler additionally reported that preliminary engineering to provide water to LaBelle's planned recreation park is under way. The city needs to install chemical equipment to keep iron insoluble longer and change the water's pH. A consumptive use permit to withdraw additional groundwater from the aquifer has been received. Eventually, the city's proposed waterplant will draw on a ne w water source, requiring a new allocation. City Attorney Jimmy Lucke y then spoke regarding drainage fo r Helms Road. Commissioner Greg Bone then moved to change th e road's right-of-way slightly and to change the access point. The amendment was unanimously approved by the commission. A petition to install speed bumps along Sabal Palm street was brought before the commission and was unanimously passed. Growth, water top discussion Submitted photo/ Ted HoffmanThe entrance to Pollywog Creek Commons is unique and inviting, providing a pleasing atmosphere for the neighborhood. Submitted photo/ Amber FredricksenGrand opening crowds appreciated the clean, comfortable design inside Pollywog Creek’s community center, which includes homey furnishings and dramatic black and white photos of agricultural workers along the walls. Low income housing designed to meet needby Patty BrantCaloosa Belle Housing is one of the most basic of human needs. The term includes a broad spectrum of abodes, from mansions down to minimal shelter. In this country, at this time, everyone should be able to afford a decent place to live. Like most places, adequate good housing is at a premium in this area. Those at the lower end of the economy feel that shortage even more keenly than others. Pollywog Creek Commons, a 64-unit housing project geared toward low income agricultural workers, opened July 8. The complex was funded by USDA and the Florida Housing Finance Corporation, and developed by a non-pro t organization called Rural Neighborhoods Inc. This affordable farm labor housing community is located at 137 Jaycee-Lions Drive and is currently accepting applications. Because of nancing restrictions, possible tenants are limited to agricultural workers. Executive Director of Rural Neighborhoods, Inc., Steve Kirk has taken some ak over this restriction, but he points out that USDA monies are tied to agricultural housing. Pollywog Creek architect Ted Hoffman said one of the main objectives of the overall project was to present an attractive face to the community along JayceeLions Blvd. The complex has a central newszap.comFree SpeechFree AdsSee Page 4 for information about how to contact the newspaper See Heroes — Page 2 See Housing — Page 16

Christopher D. Strickland in June of 2008. On July 26, 2009, the second bene t w as held and The City of LaBelle Commissioners made a proclamation to deem July 26 as a time to remember and honor these two military heroes. But this event has also channeled our individual love of country into a community project that continues to honor all veterans w ho have served and who continue to serve our country. From this our local veterans park has been able to continue to develop. The veterans park has been an on-going accomplishment of many individuals and businesses that have given generously of their time, materials and monies. To all of you we thank you, and hope for your continued support. Staff Sgt. Strickland, 25, was assigned to 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; he died June 25, 2008 in Helmand Province, A fghanistan, while supporting combat operations. He was attempting to disarm an Improvised Explosive Device. He was the second soldier from LaBelle to be killed that w eek. On the day prior, June 24, 2008, LaBelle native Chief Warrant Of cer Robert Hammett J r., 39, of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division from Fort Carson, Colo., w as killed in a bomb blast in Kabul, Iraq. He w as on his third deployment to Iraq. As of June 5, 2011, the Military Times reported 4,444 U.S. soldiers have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, and 1,614 had died as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. “Each of these heroes stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die, that freedom might live and grow and increase in its blessings.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Also on that day, families of veterans will lay 15 more memorial bricks in the walk of honor. They will be shoving off again soon and are hoping the good folks of LaBelle can help them help the good but very poor folks in the Bahamas. The couple always brings hard-to-get items for those folks as gifts. Speci cally, they are collecting old musical instruments for the very talented children's band in the Bahamas, directed by a retired musician from the Royal Bahamas Police Band. The group can also use sheet music, reeds and other musical accessories. The Pottses also distribute old clothes and very importantly, school supplies for the children wherever they stop. Anyone with items they'd like to offer can drop them off at the Caloosa Belle of ce by the end of July. You can call them at 1-907-841-5082 or email jjpotts48@yahoo.com.

It's so important for you to protect yourself and your family from mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus infection, St. Louis Encephalitis and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Once a person is infected, they may have mild symptoms which include headache, fever, dizziness and fatigue, but other severe symptoms are also possible. Mosquito-borne diseases can cause serious illnesses and sometimes death in people of any age, but children and those over 50 are at greatest risk for severe reactions and disease. Avoiding mosquito bites is the best way to prevent disease. Please remember the 5 D's: Dusk and Dawn Avoid being outdoors w hen mosquitoes are seeking blood. Dress Wear clothing that covers most of your skin. DEET When the potential exists for exposure to mosquitoes, repellents containing up to 30 percent DEET are recommended. Oil of lemon eucalyptus can also be effective. Drainage Check around your home to rid the area of standing water, where mosquitoes lay eggs.Tips on Repellent Use Always read label directions carefully for the approved usage before applying a repellent. In protecting children, read label instructions to be sure the repellent is appropriate. DEET is not recommended on children y ounger than two months old. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children less than three years old. Infants should be kept indoors or mosquito netting should be used over carriers and strollers when outside. Never apply repellents to a child's hands. Adults should apply repellent rst to their own hands and then transfer it to the child's skin and clothing. Apply insect repellent to exposed skin or onto clothing, but not under clothing. Do not apply repellent near the eyes or mouth, cuts, wounds or irritated skin.Tips on Eliminating Mosquito Breeding Sites Clean out eaves, troughs and gutters. Remove old tires or drill holes in those used in playgrounds to drain. Turn over or remove any empty containers (cups, pots, buckets, etc.). Check tarps on boats or other equipment that may collect water. Store boats upside down or with a cover Replace water in birdbaths and pet or other animal feeding dishes at least once a week. Change water in plant trays, including hanging plants, at least once a week. Remove vegetation or obstructions in drainage ditches that prevent the ow of water. For more information on mosquitoborne illnesses, visit the Florida Department of Health's Environmental Health web site at: http://www.doh.state. .us/Environment/ medicine/arboviral/index.html Please take action now so that you don't let mosquitoes take a bite out of your summer activities! Protect yourself from mosquito bites by Matt KindermannLast week we talked about the fact that Baby Boomers and Matures, those 55+, are the fastest growing age group in the labor market. We also mentioned the generational categories: Matures are those people born prior to 1945; Baby Boomers are those born between 1946 and 1964; Gen-X'ers are those born between 1965 and 1980; and the Millenials are those born between 1981 and 2000. For those 55+ there are many things you can do to increase your attractiveness to potential employers and one of those things is to brush up on your computer experience. Southwest Florida Works offers free computer training at the Ft. Myers of ce every day of the week where you can learn about basic computer operation, Microsoft Word to create memo's and letters and Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets and data reports. To nd a class, go to www.sw works. org, click on "Locations" then select "Calendars" and select "Ft. Myers." Many of our other locations offer free classes as well, such as Interview Techniques, Resume Writing and Making a Good First Impression. However, having computer skills is a must for most jobs and should be a priority. On your resume, de nitely document your education but leave off the dates of completion if you graduated more than 10 years ago. Your education is not irrelevant, but don't offer old dates unless asked. Consider a functional resume that lists your accomplishments and job duties rst and condenses your work history to just your job title, place and years of employment. For instance, if you sent 10 years at XYZ Company and was promoted from Secretary to Executive Assistant, your work history line should simply read: Executive Assistant, XYZ Company, LaBelle, FL, 19952005. Leave out the Objective Statement and replace it with a "Branding Statement," a simple one liner that sums up your experience. To gure out what your branding statement should be, think of yourself as a business. Why would a "customer" buy (hire) from you? De ne what you're selling or what your expertise is in. All the good stuff you did at XYZ Company should go at the top of the resume under the Branding Statement, without mention of when you actually did those things. This style will make you seem more relevant and up to date. Do be speci c about your duties and responsibilities; give examples of things you've done, businesses and industries you worked with, machines and tools you used and what you used them for. Those over 55 should know what free or reduced cost resources are out there for them, and the following will list a few: for legal assistance dealing with family law, immigration, housing and taxes, call Legal Aid of Collier County at 239-775-4555; for questions regarding healthcare call the Elder Helpline at the Area Agency on Aging for SWFL at 866-413-5337; for employment and skills assistance, make an appointment to see a representative at Experience Works in Ft. Myers at 866-976-5939; for community and companion assistance contact Dr. Piper Services in Ft. Myers at 239-332-5346. Upthegrove Elementary fourth-grader Camryn Nash had the opportunity to see Washington, D.C., in a special way. The nine-year-old visited Florida 16th District Representative Tom Rooney. Congressman Rooney signed a copy of The House Mouse and the Senate Mouse, a book about how laws are made, and Camryn and the congressman took a picture together. One of his aides, Peter, a recent law school graduate, took Camryn and her grandparents on an indiv idual tour of the Capitol showing them both the House and Senate sides of the Capitol, the old Supreme Court chambers, and the old Congress meeting room. Representative John Kline (MN-R), who is a family friend, took Camryn onto the oor of the House of Representatives and even allowed her to register his votes. A number of the representatives let Camryn register their votes, too. She w atched as each vote was recorded on an electronic board above where the speaker sits. Camryn also was able to visit the Senate Chamber. Camryn went on a tour of Ford’s theater where President Lincoln was assassinated. She looked into the actual box w here the president was sitting when shot by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Another highlight was a self-guided tour of the White House. Camryn thought the home of the president was “kind of modern and real cool.” The furnishings, wall paper and portraits were particularly beautiful. The gardens and lawns are skillfully maintained. Next to the White House is the Department of the Treasury. Camryn went on a tour of one of the oldest buildings in Washington, D.C. One of the most interesting parts of her tour was the dome, which had recently been discovered after being hidden by a false ceiling. The ceiling was placed there during World War II to avoid light shining through the windows. Camryn and her grandparents visited Arlington National Cemetery. They observed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The traditions of the soldiers in the Old Guard are maintained to the highest levels. The Tomb has been guarded 24 hours a day since it was placed at Arlington. A surprise awaited them as there was a wreath-laying ceremony when they were at the Tomb. As Carmyn and her family walked in Arlington, they found the headstones of soldiers from the Civil War and Iraq War who received the Medal of Honor. Additionally, with great honor, they watched as a caisson drawn by four chestnut horses and carrying a veteran passed by. Finally, they visited the graves of two Marines whom they knew personally. One, Chris Strickland, was a 2000 LaBelle High School graduate. It was a terri c visit to our nation’s Capitol. Spearheaded by the South Immokalee Community Circle group, all proceeds will bene t Front Porch’s back-to-school giveaway. Donations are $2 at the door. Sponsors are welcomed. Most of us get trapped in the everyday. We head out to eat and invariably order “the usual.” Well, Chalkboard Deli is anything but “the usual” when it comes to its menu. Even its decor chalkboard walls that invite kids to vent their artistic talent is not what you’d expect. Then there’s the menu. Be prepared to take a little time going over this these deli sandwiches include some surprising ingredients. For instance, Granny’s Blue Chicken sandwich piles sliced chicken, baby spinach, crumbled blue cheese, sliced granny apple, bacon slices and blue cheese dressing on a Kaiser roll. Order the Stag and you’ll get spinach, turkey, artichoke, goat cheese and cream cheese on a sun dried tomato tortilla. Some say they have the “best Cuban sandwich around.” Chalkboard Deli uses Dietz and Watson deli meats, exclusively. Got a sweet tooth? How about a Caramel A pple PB creamy peanut butter, bacon slices, sliced apples and caramel sauce served on sliced white bread and pressed. Your not-so-daring friends can enjoy Chalkboard Deli as well with lots of slightly “twisted” “usual” sandwiches. Of course, their salads are a little adventurous, too, and their vegetarian menu well, come take a look. Her best sellers are the turkey avocado, cuban and Caprese (a vegetarian sandwich w ith tomato slices, fresh basil, basil pesto and mozzarella slices on ciabatta bread pressed on a panini grill). Don’t worry about the kids, when they’re not creating great art on the walls, they can choose from their own menu with time-tested kid-sandwiches and even a Rylan salad created by owner Amanda Keene’s son. Amanda Keene and her husband, Kenny J r., opened the deli last March. Amanda and her mom, Laura Harris, run the place with help from other family members, including Rylan (of salad fame) age 7 and Parker, age 2. Other employees include Nancy Garza and Kelsey Cooper. Both Amanda and Laura have worked in various restaurants around town. Amanda’s time in the Air Force, seeing the world and sampling exotic fare, reinforced her natural tendency to experiment with different avors and textures. She started out to build a unique, fun place with healthy, delicious food. In fact, the chalkboard squares on her son’s walls were the inspiration for the artinspiring walls at the deli. It’s quite unique and she gets a lot of comments from new customers on the decor as well as her food. Can’t do without dessert? Amanda carries cakes by D Cake Lady and pies by Debbie Klemmer. Don’t forget the ice cream strictly Working Cow homemade ice cream from St. Peterburg. Make no mistake, Chalkboard Deli is no “fast food” restaurant. Everything is fresh, prepared to order by hand and no MSG. Look for spinach smoothies (green smoothies) coming up. (Don’t worry mixed with papaya, mango and banana, it’ll be great!) Amanda’s planning some other great smoothies including green tea, coffee and more. She hopes to have some outdoor seating by the time school opens. Amanda’s all about LaBelle, buying as much of her vegetables locally as she can and her honey comes from Curtis’ Honey House. She offers a 10 percent discount to local business owners and emergency workers. She recycles, collects rewards for LaBelle Elementary School and donates one percent of her total sales to the Dr. Keene Memorial Scholarship. Chalkboard Deli is located at 870 W. A ticket can also be written for any child under 16 riding a bicycle without a helmet. park for kids and their parents, a community room, even a tness room and computer room for residents' use. Mr. Hoffman has done numerous projects with non-pro t groups like RCMA and feels that amenities should be available to low income families. Although his designs are unique and forward-looking, he said, "My work is not about the architecture, it's about life and people." Inside, the two-, threeand four-bedroom apartments are subtly striking yet livable and come equipped with appliances and ceiling fans. It's the common space between the apartments that the most people experience, and that area is neatly landscaped. Since the project came in under budget, he said it allowed Rural Neighborhoods, Inc., to add unique Scandanavian climbing equipment for the kids. Pollywog Creek offers twoand threestory apartments, each with front and back porches. Mr. Hoffman lives in LaBelle and has numerous distinctive architectural projects to his credit including the RCMA facility off Cowboy Way. Some 7-8 families are set to move in this w eek, with more names on the waiting list. Potential residents must meet strict guidelines to be approved for Pollywog Creek complex. They undergo checks on their tax statements, W-2 forms and even home visits to determine their basic home maintenance skills. Residential Manager Melissa Martinez has over 1.5 years experience in her eld, previously working at the Immokalee Housing and Family Services. Her job is to make sure everyone who gets an apartment is quali ed. All their documentation has to be in order, along with their Social Security and photo ID. She veri es employment records. She also does home visits at prospective tenants' homes to see their cleanliness and sanitary habits personally and to ensure that only those who are supposed to be living there, live there. At Pollywog Ceek there are 2-, 3and 4-bedroom apartments. Only two residents are allowed per bedroom. These are strict guidelines residents must adhere to, so staff has a big interest in their lifestyle before they are accepted into Pollywog Creek. Ms. Martinez works with applicants to make sure all requirements are met and that the families are good candidates. Residents are expected to take good care of their apartment. Credit, you see, is not the only measure of character. She is available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Melissa grew up in a farmworker family, one of 12 children, so the position is a good t for her. She truly understands the residents. Sometimes it's heartbreaking, she points out. Recently she dealt with a single mother of two (a daughter 21, son 17) living in a tent in someone's back yard. The husband w alked out on the family a while ago and she continues to struggle to get on her feet, much the same way Ms. Martinez watched her own parents' struggle. She is the rst in the family to earn an associates degree in business. In another year she should get her degree in management and human services from University of Phoenix. She said there are about 18 names on the waiting list for apartments at this time. If a family is found in noncompliance with the rules, they have seven days to take care of the problem. These home visits are "telling" do they care about housekeeping? Are too many people living there? What about pets? Pollywog Creek does not accept pets. As he planned Pollywog Creek, Steve Kirk visited GreenTree South, built some 12 years ago by the Area Agency on Housing. The farmworker housing complex is well run by a management company, as is evidenced by the fact it's still in very good condition. According to Mr. Kirk, Pollwog Creek provides Equal Housing Opportunity to all eligible applicants with subsidized rents. Residents pay about one-third of their income as rent. Steve Kirk's vision is to build good nonpro t housing in small towns like LaBelle, Okeechobee, Immokalee and Ruskin. His company also builds community health centers and child care facilities and pulls nancing, architecture and permitting together to build affordable housing, Mr. Kirk said these could not exist without the cooperation of local government. The complex was built using $6.5 million in USDA Rural Development loans and grants. About 80 percent of the funding was in the form of loans. USDA is one of the few remaining nancing programs left. Only 20-30 projects per year are approved; of those only one or two in rural areas and Mr. Kirk doesn't see the situation improving. In the future, he sees even less chance for small areas to get funding. The lion's share will continue to go to larger counties with better transportation. Although USDA money is tied to housing for agricultural workers, it could be that housing that starts out as agricultural could move to non-agricultural residents. In any case, he sees this project as a community asset for a long time. It's a common misconception that this housing is only for farm laborers. The truth is, those who work in many different capacities of agriculture are eligible. Mr. Kirk said anyone interested in Pollywog Creek who derives a living from agriculture should at least pick up an application. "We want to be inclusive," he said. Mr. Kirk pointed out that he is not a "developer" who builds a project and leaves. Rural Neighborhoods is a charitable group that does rental apartments and it will be here at Pollywog Creek for 30-40 years. "We will be an active member of the LaBelle community," he promises. These apartments are built to last with ceramic tile and all plywood frame cabinets, The complex is designed to add character to the neighborhood and a place that tenants will be proud to call home. It's meant to have a unique feel, to provoke comment and interest. With Pollywog Creek Commons built, Mr. Kirk is now turning his attention to housing for the elderly on property adjacent to Pollywog on the west. He envisions 29 onebedroom ef ciencies. The HUD 202 project has been submitted and he should have an answer on nancing in September. 16 Caloosa Belle July 21, 2011 Submitted photo/ Ted HoffmanLaBelle Mayor Paul Puletti, left, and developer Steve Kirk got thing rolling at the grand opening ceremonies for Pollywog Creek Commons July 8.
