County passes up

It was a contentious vote at the Jan. 25
county commission meeting, but Hendry
County will not be hiring a Community
Development Director any time soon. In a
three-two vote, the board opted not to hire
Margaret Emblidge, who was recommend-
ed by a ranking committee out of a field of
over 30 candidates.
Since the previous director Vince Cautero
left, his assistant Sarah Catala has been hold-

ing her own.
Commissioners were careful to be com-
plimentary of Ms. Catala's efforts even as they
wrangled about the hiring of candidate Em-
blidge, who would have brought a regional
perspective to the county. She was a gov-
ernor's appointee to the Regional Planning
Council for seven years, with experience in
economic development and Hendry's com-
prehensive plan. Ms. Emblidge also served
in the private sector with Bonita Bay. She
said she and her husband were planning to
move to Hendry County, if she was hired.

However, Commissioner Darrell Harris
was first to go on record as opposing the
appointment, feeling the county would be
better served holding off and that the timing
was wrong.
New Commissioner Al Perry wondered
if it was essential to fill that position at this
time, noting the cash-strapped county might
be able to save some money for a while, al-
lowing Ms. Catala to continue "holding the
fort."
County Administrator Judi Kennington-
Korf explained that the planner is respon-

Pure Texas deer are hard to get because
they could not legally be taken out of state

Others on his farm are a Northern/Texas

All his deer are 25-30 generations from
the wild, but Mike said they never lose their
natural instincts.

It's a typical day on Mike Mansfield's deer farm with these doe relaxing in the

MIke said he always sells a minimum of
two animals to a client because deer are
social creatures. Being alone is completely
counter to their nature and could put them
under great stress.
Usually, doe give birth to twins, but last
July Mike's alpha doe, Lucky, had quads.
Now, as a rule the doe fawns are taken from
their mothers 48 hours after their birth and
bottle fed.
It fell to Austin to bottle feed the tiniest
one, just the size of a soda can. The eighth
grader at LMS, helped Peanut suckle, then
bottle fed it. The young man said the ex-
perience was the most incredible he's ever
had.
Deer are in rut from October through
January, Mike said, but on his farm the ani-
mals are bred through artificial insemina-
tion in late October with the help of a vet.
This ensures that each animal's pedigree
can be documented. Buyers will sometimes
back up the process with natural mating, he
said.
The reason it's important to breed these
deer in Florida rather than just import them
from other states is so they can accept the
climate here. Bringing deer down from oth-
er states has been tried but they don't adapt
well, Mike said.
There are only about 100 breeders in
Florida. He said the North American Deer
Farmers is a huge industry, and Mike is very
interested in getting others started in the

breeders market as well. On Feb. 12, a semi-
nar is planned at the Dallas B. Townsend Ag
Center, 1085 Pratt Blvd. beginning at 10 a.m.
Speakers, including Mike, will offer informa-
tion on subjects like whitetail deer farming,
wildlife management, protecting your land
and property rights, agricultural exemptions
and tax advantages and 4-H/FFA programs.
You can call Mike for more information at
239-851-6864.
It's all a learning process - you learn from
other breeders and vets; breeders work to-
gether, Mike commented.
For Mike and his family, raising deer has
become more than a business or even a
pastime. On peaceful evenings, they watch
their deer play and graze. It's become his
passion, he says, it's a different challenge
every day. Looking around at his herd he
adds, "I'll always have deer."

opt not to hire Ms. Emblidge.
She explained that the Community De-
velopment Director is also a division level
director over planning and zoning, building
licenses and code enforcement. She added
there are several other departments she
would like to move back under that um-
brella as well.
Commissioner Karson Turner character-
ized the county as being in "dire straits" and
gave Ms. Catala a vote of confidence while
exhorting his fellow commissioners to "do
what's right for Team Hendry County."
It was Commissioner Tris Chapman who
took the lead to accept the candidate.
He said he has been pleased with the way
Ms. Catala has shouldered the responsibil-
ity as temporary replacement for the Com-
munity Development Director but believed
it would be short-sighted to "kick the can"
another year to save money. He pointed
out that the county had a chance to get an
employee of "tremendous qualifications" in
an important position. While the economy
continues to be slack, she could set up a sys-
tem and would be a great mentor for Ms.
Catala. He also wondered how much more
responsibility the county can be put on the
county administrator.
Commissioner Janet Taylor observed
that Ms. Catala has done an excellent job
but the county needs a person with more

qualifications in that position.
Commissioner Turner felt the county
should use consultants as needed, "catch its
breath" for a time before filling the position.
He said he feels the administration is a little
top heavy and there is room to downsize a
little more. He said the expense was not jus-
tified in this economy.
In the final vote, three commissioners
(Darrell Harris, Karson Turner and Al Perry)
opted to deny the appointment while only
Commissioners Chapman and Taylor voted
to approve it.
After the vote, a ruffled Commissioner
Chapman said, "I'm ashamed of this board
for turning down this recommendation ...
this is stupid," and left the meeting.

As President of the FireWise Program in
Glades County, Jimmy Cianfrani says now is
the time to make your home Fire Safe.
There are many things that you, the home
owner can do to prevent serious damage to
persons and your property. Here is a list of
things to do to make your property defen-
sible:
1. Trim lower branches up to 10 feet on
tall trees, remove vines from trees and keep
shrubbery away from pine trees so that a fire
on the ground cannot climb up these fuel
ladders to the treetops.
2. Landscape your defensible space to
make it difficult for fire to spread to your
house. Use shrub islands or patches of pe-
rennials rather than continuous beds of
plantings. Thin trees so branches do not
touch each other. Remove shrubs and dead
vegetation within five feet of your house.
3. Keep combustible items like wood
piles, compost piles, gas grills, gas cans and
propane tanks at least 30 feet away from
your house. Clear away dead vegetation,
pine needles and branches.
4. Use mowed grass, stone walkways
and mulched plantings in your landscape.
Although mulch helps retain soil moisture,

Sheriff has voluni
The restructuring of the Hendry County
Sheriff's Office Volunteers in Public Safety
(VIPS) is one of the newest opportuni-
ties for citizens to volunteer with Hendry
County Sheriff's Deputies. Responsibilities
may include seizing and transporting found
property, directing traffic at special events or
around disabled vehicles, conducting vaca-
tion home checks and much more.
Your desire to volunteer your time is an
excellent example of being a good neighbor
and contributes to our overall mission of
leading the way for a safer Hendry County.
The program is coordinated through the
Sheriff's Community Relations Division. If
you are interested in applying, please con-
tact Lt. Susan Harrelle at (863) 674-5604 or
via e-mail at sharrelle@hendrysheriff.org.
Applicants must be 18 years of age, pass
a background check, possess a valid Florida
Driver's license, complete at least four hours
of the training program and comply with
all program policies and procedures. Once
the application is complete and returned, a
background check will be conducted. Ap-

it must be kept moist or it can become a fuel
source. Do not use thick combustible mulch
near your home's foundation or other wood
structures.
5. Keep large, leafy, hardwood trees in
your yard, particularly on the east and west
sides of your house. Their shade is impor-
tant to cool your house and the flat leaves
trap moisture on the ground. Large pine
trees also provide good shade. Trim lower
branches and rake up pine needles near any
structures.
6. Remove flammable plants like saw pal-
metto, wax myrtle, yaupon holly, red cedar
and gallberry with in 30 feet of your home.
These shrubs are appropriate farther from
your home and in natural areas managed
with prescribed fire. They contain resins,
oils and waxes that burn readily. Many other
plants are not as flammable.
It is extremely important that your prop-
erty is clearly marked with the correct ad-
dress, and there is access to the property for
any fire or rescue vehicle to enter. For more
information on line you may go to www.fire-
wise.org or you may call Jimmy Cianfrani,

Caloosa Belle

Caloosa Belle

February 3, 2011

Bottom line: Have you considered YOU, lately?

by Les Morgan, pastor
Caloosa Baptist Church, LaBelle
Bob Hope was one of the great come-
dians of the last century. As he was getting
along in years, he once commented that
he'd been reading and was astonished to
discover the following: "Today my heart
beat over 103,000 times, my blood traveled
168 million miles, I breathed 23,400 times. I
inhaled 438 cubic feet of air, ate 3 pounds of
food, and drank 2.9 pounds of liquid. I also
perspired 1.43 pints, gave off 85.3 degrees

of heat and generated 450 tons of energy.
While doing all that, I spoke 4,800 words, I
moved 750 major muscles, and I exercised 7
million brain cells. It's no wonder I'm tired
all the time."
Augustine once said, "People travel to
wonder at the height of mountains, at the
huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of
the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean,
at the circular motion of the stars -- and they
pass by themselves without wondering."
Augustine was right. Most of us don't re-

alize how intricate and wondrous our bodies
really are. I did some reading recently, and I
was amazed at the uniqueness and intricate-
ness of our bodies.
For example, in a square inch of skin, you
would find: 20 blood vessels; 65 muscles; 78
nerves, 78 sensors for heat, 13 sensors for
cold, and 160 for pressure with 650 sweat
glands. In the same square inch of skin a per-
son has 1,300 nerve endings and 19,500,000
cells. The skin serves several purposes in-
cluding providing a protective shield against

Speak Out Response

Dear Concerned Citizen,
I want to thank you for the opportunity to
address your concerns in last week's edition
of the Caloosa Belle. As Sheriff of Hendry
County, every decision I make has to provide
a benefit to our county. I have weighed the
pros and cons of this issue of deputies driv-
ing their vehicles home. I have found that
the Hendry County Sheriff's Office has al-
ways had a problem of losing qualified, well
trained officers to other surrounding coun-
ties due to their higher pay scale. The cost
of training a new Deputy can be quite costly,
that is why it pays to keep them around. You
are correct in stating that we are in desperate
financial times and that is one reason I have
lowered the newly hired Deputies starting
salaries by $2,000.00 per year. Unfortunately,
we do not have a lot of added benefits at our
Sheriff's Office that would entice Deputies to
stay around especially now with the lower
salaries. Having a take-home vehicle is one
benefit we can provide to help them make
up for financial deficiencies in other areas.
Deputies are technically on duty 24 hours
a day, seven days a week. There are many
times when Deputies are called to respond
to emergency situations from their homes
when time can mean life or death. I would
much rather they respond directly to the
scene, or else, they would have to respond
to the office first, switch out their gear, per-
form a vehicle inspection and then respond
to the scene.
It has been proven that people take bet-
ter care of things that belong to them. These
cars, though technically belonging to you
the taxpayer, are in fact the deputies' home
and office for twelve hours a day and they do
take care of their vehicle as if it belonged to

them. I can personally attest to the terrible
conditions of vehicles that were not take-
home vehicles from working at an agency
that did not have our policy. Those vehicles
were constantly seeing extremely high re-
pair bills and had to be replaced every year.
Our Deputies will keep the same vehicle on
the road for up to six years and sometimes
longer, keeping replacement costs at a bare
minimum. We also allow a Deputy to take
his or her vehicle only 15 miles outside the
county. So as you can see, the monies saved
on replacement of vehicles, lower repair
costs and lower training costs from keeping
deputies longer, far outweighs a few dollars
spent on gas. In fact it would be more costly
not to have take home vehicles.
As far as deputies using their vehicles to
pick up their kids from school, I do not al-
low deputies to engage in this practice while
on duty, or when they are off duty while at
home. I do however, allow deputies to drop
off or pick up their child when they are on
their way to or from work, then and only
then, are they permitted to drop off or pick
up their child from school. It saves everyone
time and money as well as it gives more law
enforcement presence. I did notice that in
your public forum comment, you stated that
"deputies" were doing this. However, be-
sides me dropping my daughter off at school
at 7:30 a.m. on my way in to work, I know of
only one deputy who also takes his child to
school on his way to work.
As far as your observation of the depu-
ties slacking or making jokes of things that
should be taken seriously; I beg you, please
bring the specific incident to my attention
and it will be addressed. One thing I demand
from the deputies is that they do their job

excuses for bad behavior, but sometimes,
deputies make jokes as a defense mecha-
nism to deal with the things that most will
never be exposed to, however; there is still a
time and a place, which is why I would like
to know the specifics.
Finally, I am well aware that sometimes
deputies do speed when they are not on of-
ficial business. This is not at all tolerated and
there have been those who were disciplined
for such acts. On the note of speeding, again
many things are subjective. There are situa-
tions that require a deputy to get somewhere
fast but may not qualify for the use of lights
and sirens. It seems to be a catch 22. If a dep-
uty is called, and he or she doesn't get there
RIGHT NOW, I get complaints. If he or she is
attempting to be prompt but doesn't activate
the emergency lights, then I get complaints
of speeding. If you will note, there are unit
numbers located on the sides and rear of all
the marked patrol vehicles. I implore you, if
you see a deputy acting outside of what you
believe to be his or her scope of duty, let me
know the unit number and I assure you, if
there is a violation, then that Deputy will be
subject to, and will be disciplined.
I appreciate your concern in this matter.
Thank you,
Sheriff Steve Whidden

One Immokalee cowboy has the soul
of a writer. Huey Howard has been writing
since 1976 and just self published a book of
poetry called Child of Light, A Collection of
Poems.
At 15, he felt called to put down his
thoughts and feelings in paper and ink. His
own musings on life and the stories of peo-
ple's lives supply him with unending mate-
rial, he said. People are a lifelong fascination
for Huey.
Born in Fort Myers in 1958, Huey gradu-
ated from Immokalee High School in 1976.
Huey's mother was a writer as well and
he credits her with awakening the writer in
him. She never published anything but al-
ways wrote from the heart, he said. Huey
went with her to her editor and soaked up
everything he could from listening to those
meetings. He observed, gathering knowl-
edge and information for his own future
writings.
He also learned the importance of writ-
ing the truth as he sees it, but never in a
hurtful way. That was one of his mother's
big lessons, he said. You can write the truth
without ugliness, she taught him.
She died when Huey was just 15, leaving
behind several books she wrote, which are

No wonder David wrote, "I praise you be-
cause I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that
full well." (Psalms 139:14.) Now, I'm sure
David didn't realize all of the facts I've just
related about our bodies when he penned
this psalm. Maybe he was out watching the
sheep and happened to glance down at his
hands and notice how intriguing they were.
I do know that something about his body
caused him, not only to remark on how fear-
fully and wondrously made it was, but also
to say this: "My frame was not hidden from
you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was WOVEN TOGETHER in the
depths of the earth..." (Psalms 139:15.) The
terminology he was using in that passage
is the imagery of a master craftsman who
skillfully weaves a beautiful and colorful
tapestry. In a nutshell, David exclaimed, "I
didn't just happen... I am not an accident...
I have value... therefore, I have worth."
As a result, David arrives at this conclu-
sion: "O LORD, you have searched me and
you know me. You know when I sit and
when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from
afar. You discern my going out and my ly-
ing down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you know it
completely, O LORD. You hem me in- be-
hind and before; you have laid your hand
upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful
for me, too lofty for me to attain." (Psalm
139:1-6.)
Suppose I get $20 out of an ATM and of-
fer it to you. Would you take it? What if I tore
it in half? What if I crumpled it up and threw
it to the ground and stomped on it? Would
you still take it?

Why do you want a torn, crumpled up,
dirty piece of paper? ANSWER: because it
still is valuable! Why is that? Is the paper
of this $20 worth still valued at twenty dol-
lars? Is the ink on this bill worth that much
money? No. Then why is this piece of paper
worth $20?
Because the government of the United
States (which created it) says it's worth $20.
And that is the ONLY reason this bill has any
kind of value.
Consider this: suppose I had a computer,
an efficient printer, and the paper which is
used at the mint so I could print off an al-
most identical $20 bill. If I ran off my own
$20 bills and tried to use them in some of
the local businesses, what would happen?
Obviously, I would end up in jail for trying
to pass it off as if it had value... but it had
none.
Genesis 1:27 tells us, "God created man
in his own image, in the image of God he
created him; male and female he created
them." Genesis 2:7 declares "the LORD God
formed the man from the dust of the ground
and breathed into his nostrils the breath of
life, and the man became a living being."
For that reason, God values all people...
especially people that the world would
overlook. Moreover, Ephesians 2:10 states
we are, "God's workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus to do good works, which God
prepared in advance for us to do."
Bottom line: you are of inestimable value,
for you are an image-barer of God Himself.
It's time to start believing that truth and
living that way, don't you think?

now in the care of his sister.
Huey's first book was published byXlibris
and may be found at Barnes & Nobles and
Amazon. cor, both in softback and ebook
form.
Poetry comes natural to him, he said, his
subjects include nature, love and human na-
ture.
As a cowboy on his dad's ranch, the
Howard Cattle Company at Keri in Hendry
County, Huey is surrounded by nature every
day. "I've worked with cows all my life," he
said. The family ranch claims about 1,000
head.
Nature is always there, surrounding him.
All he has to do is pay attention to what she's

saying to him.
Huey said he has stacks of poems and
short stories in his collection. He is already
planning his next book. It will be a collec-
tion of short stories he has gleaned from his
own experience as well as observing other
people.
He said ideas just "pop into my head" as
well as visions of the future he regards as a
gift.
Having no formal training in writing gives
Huey no cause for being reticent about writ-
ing. He writes from the heart, like his mother
- and hearts always speak to other hearts. He
knows that words are just the vehicles for
the really important things in life.

Wildfire safety after freezes

by Pat Dobbins
The cold weather has caused a
lot of grass, plants and trees to turn
brown and be really dry. Our dry
weather increases the potential for
wildfires, and it's important for the
community to know what common-
sense steps they can take to protect
themselves and their families, as
well as when it's appropriate to seek Pat
medical attention. Dobbin
Smoke from wildfires is a mix-
ture of gases and fine particles from burn-
ing trees and other plant materials. Smoke
can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory
system and worsen chronic heart and lung
diseases. Fortunately, most persons who are
exposed to thick smoke will not have health
problems. How much and how long you
are exposed to the smoke, as well as your
age and degree of susceptibility play a role
in determining whether or not someone will
experience smoke-related problems. If you
are experiencing serious medical problems
for any reason, seek medical treatment im-
mediately.
Smoke can cause coughing, scratchy
throat, irritated sinuses, shortness of breath,
chest pain, headaches, stinging eyes and
runny nose. If you have heart or lung disease,
smoke might make your symptoms worse.
People who have heart disease might expe-
rience chest pain, rapid heartbeat, shortness
of breath and fatigue. Smoke may worsen
symptoms for people who have pre-existing
respiratory conditions, such as respiratory
allergies, asthma and chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) in the following
ways:
o Inability to breathe normally
o Cough with or without mucus
o Chest discomfort
o Wheezing and shortness of breath
When smoke levels are high enough,
even healthy people may experience some
of these symptoms
You can limit your exposure to the smoke
by:
Staying indoors whenever possible, us-
ing air conditioners and keeping windows
closed while driving in a vehicle.
Individuals can reduce the amount of
smoke particles in their vehicles by keeping
the windows closed. The car's ventilation
systems typically remove a portion of the
particle coming in from outside. For best
results, individuals may want to use the "re-
circulate air" feature found in most cars,
which will help keep the particulate levels

lower.
If you do not have an air condi-
tioner and if it is too warm to stay in-
side with the windows closed, seek
alternative shelter.
How to protect your family from
smoke:
Pay attention to local news cov-
erage or health warnings related to
smoke.
s Use common sense when out-
side conditions are smoky. Avoid
prolonged outdoor activities. It is especially
important to limit time spent outdoors for
children and persons with existing medical
conditions.
Stay indoors and run your air condition-
er, if you have one. Keep the fresh air intake
closed and the filter clean to prevent bring-
ing additional smoke inside. For best results,
run the air conditioning with re-circulated
air.
Help keep particle levels lower inside.
When smoke levels are high, try to avoid
using anything that burns, such as wood
fireplaces, gas logs, gas stoves and even
candles. Do not vacuum, which stirs up par-
ticles already inside your home. Also do not
smoke tobacco.
Follow the advice of your healthcare
provider about taking medicines and fol-
lowing your asthma management plan if
you have asthma or other lung disease. Call
your healthcare provider if your symptoms
worsen.
If you are asked to evacuate your home,
be sure to bring your important family docu-
ments, valuables and your family disaster
supply kit. Your disaster supply kit should
contain enough food, water and supplies to
sustain your family for at least three days. Do
not forget any medications or special items
such as a first aid kit. It is extremely impor-
tant for families to create their own disaster
plan before a disaster strikes so they are
quickly able to determine what valuables
they may want to bring, what items need to
be stored and how to preserve keepsakes.

Audubon Society will host the Clewiston
premiere screening of "Ghost Bird" the new
"eco-noir" documentary film by Scott Crock-
er on February 14 at 7 p.m. at the Clewiston
Museum, 109 Central Ave. Clewiston. Ghost
Bird explores the strange rediscovery of the
Ivory-billed Woodpecker, believed extinct
for over half a century.
In 2005, scientists announced that the
bird was still flying in the swamps of East-
ern Arkansas, leading the nation's 80 mil-
lion birders to celebrate the woodpecker's
miraculous second-coming. The residents of
nearby Brinkley, Arkansas, also flew at the
chance to capitalize on this fledgling eco-
tourism, hoping for a resurrection of their
own.
Nonetheless, following the largest recov-
ery effort ever undertaken for a lost species,
and despite millions of dollars in govern-
ment funding, the Ivory-bill's fate remains as
elusive as ever. The New York Times said:
"Crocker has turned a bird-watching tale
into a multi-layered story that will fascinate
practically everybody in Ghost Bird, a witty,
wistful documentary."
The Wall Street Journal writes, "By turns
witty and metaphysical, 'Ghost Bird' evokes
the offbeat Americana of Errol Morris's 'Ver-

belief and the blurry margins of fact."

About Ghost Bird: Set in a murky swamp
overun with birders, scientists and reporters,
Ghost Bird explores the limits of certainty,
the obsessive power of hope, and how
one phantom giant woodpecker changed
a sleepy Southern town forever. This thrill-
ing eco-noir investigates the strange but
true story of a small town in Arkansas over-
run by a nation of birders all searching for
the Holy Grail with wings - the Ivory-billed
woodpecker.
Presumed extinct for over half a cen-
tury, the giant bird was seen flying through
nearby swamps by scientists who finally an-
nounced its rediscovery in 2005. Despite the
largest recovery effort in history, the Ivory-

FLW Outdoors and Goodwill gear up for the Lake 0 Open

Clewiston- The excitement of the 2011
Walmart FLW Bass Fishing Tour is coming
to Hendry County in February. This year's
Lake Okeechobee Open will take place in
Clewiston from February 3-6, and Goodwill
Industries of Southwest Florida (http://
www.goodwillswfl.org) is hooked in for all
the fun and excitement.
The Walmart FLW Tour is operated by
FLW Outdoors, the world's leading tourna-
ment-fishing organization. The 2011 Tour
season consists of 11 bass fishing events, in-
cluding four Open tournaments, six Majors
and the Forrest Wood Cup, and the Walleye
Tour Championship.
Among those competing will be profes-
sional angler Chad Grigsby of Maple Grove,
Minn., who will be sporting the Goodwill

jersey and Smiling G logo and representing
Goodwill on the Tour. Grigsby has partici-
pated on the Tour for nine years, with career
earnings nearing $500,000 and nine top-10
finishes, including one at the Forrest Wood
Cup, which is considered one of the most
competitive events in pro bass fishing.
Goodwill, which operates more than
2,500 retail stores and donation centers
throughout the United States and Canada,
will utilize the resources of FLW Outdoors to
drive traffic and awareness to its locations.
Goodwill will receive exposure and have a
presence across multiple platforms of FLW
Outdoors, including all bass and walleye
events, FLW Outdoors' multiple web sites,
FLW Outdoors Magazine and "FLW Out-
doors" television show on VERSUS.

Locally, Goodwill (http://www.good-
willswfl.org) will participate at the FLW Out-
doors Expo on February 5-6, with fun family
activities and giveaways. The Expo will be
located adjacent to the Clewiston Walmart
(1005 W Sugarland Hwy.). Goodwill will
also use the opportunity to collect donations
of gently-used items, and to promote its mis-
sion of providing programs and services for
people with disabilities and other barriers to
independence.
"The relationship formed between FLW
Outdoors and Goodwill has demonstrated
how a unique partnership can benefit both
organizations and our communities," said
Trisha Blake, president of FLW Outdoors
Marketing Division. "Goodwill provides skills
training and support services to hundreds of

people every day through its multiple pro-
grams, and we are honored to be a part of
that and continue that relationship."
The partnership between Goodwill and
FLW Outdoors came about through the
work of Irwin L. Jacobs, who is the chair-
man and chief executive officer of FLW Out-
doors, as well as the creator of FLW Fantasy
Fishing.
"Goodwill's mission of helping people
find jobs resonates with Jacobs," said Caro-
lyn Johnson, Goodwill's Vice President of
Communications. "Goodwill will collect do-
nations from FLW Outdoors fans and part-
ners, and the revenue generated from the
sale of these items will fund career training,
not just for people in Clewiston, but across
Southwest Florida."

United Way pushes toward $8 million goal in 2011

-The United Way of Lee, Hendry, and
Glades is approaching the conclusion of the
2010-2011 United Way Campaign, with only
6 weeks left. As of Jan. 24, the United Way
Campaign has raised $6.6 million which is
over 82 percent of the goal of $8,024,330.
Pat O'Donnell, United Way Campaign
Chair, said "We are so thrilled to have raised
over $6.6 million at this point! We still have
over $1.4 million to raise and I am asking
for your help. You have the power to make
a difference in the lives of your neighbors,
friends, co-workers and even your own fam-
ily members who may need the services of a
United Way Partner Agency.
"I know we can reach the $8 million goal
because our community has a history of
being extremely generous to those in need
in our community. $8 million is not an arbi-
trary number. It is based on the real needs of
our community and the needs of real people
who could be your own neighbors. The lo-
cal network of 72 United Way Partner Agen-
cies will helped over 300,000 people last
year alone. We must meet our goal so the
people of our community will get the help
they need, "O'Donnell went on to say.
"Last year was a tough year for this com-
munity, but we pulled together and reached
the goal. Our community's citizens have
shown time and again that they will help
their friends, neighbors, and co-workers
when times are really tough. The increased
human service needs in our community are
huge but so is the generosity of people like
you.
"Thank you to those of you who have al-
ready given. If you haven't given yet, it's not
too late. Remember that YOU have the pow-
er to make a difference in our community.
"Thank you for your continued support
of United Way," O'Donnell concluded.
The support of the community will allow
the Network of 72 United Way Partner Agen-
cies and over 160 programs and initiatives to
receive their full United Way funding. This
means that essential human services will be
available in our community at a time when
there are record needs.
Since the inception of United Way in
1957, 97 million dollars have been raised in
our community.
All money raised in the United Way cam-
paign stays in the local community to help
support the local human service network.
United Way Partner Agencies and initiatives
such as the Alvin A Dubin Alzheimer's Re-
source Center, Children's Advocacy Center,
Big Brothers Big Sisters, LARC and United
Way 211 serve a diverse range of needs in

Small farm supplements income for local couple

by Patty Brant
Caloosa Belle
Rich, ripe tomatoes, crisp cabbage, hearty
collards and turnip greens all picked at just
the right time - what could be better?
Dannie and Mary Sue Smith of D&M
Produce know the feeling and are happy to
oblige their friends and neighbors in the La-
Belle area by growing some of the prettiest
and tastiest vegetables around.
D&M Produce just opened for business
before Christmas. This is the second crop
Dannie and his friend Glen Cutshall put in
but the first they're offering for sale.
If you were at the recent Farmer's Mar-
kets held in Barron Park, you may remem-
ber seeing them there with a table chock full
of great vegetables.
The December freezes knocked out their
tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and squash,
but they managed to save most of the straw-
berries, cauliflower and green beans.
Dannie and Glen put up what they could
salvage of that first crop for their personal
use.
Kentucky natives, Dannie and Mary Sue
were both raised on farms. When he got
older, Dannie himself always had a garden
and retired from A. Duda & Sons in 2008.
He said his first year in Florida he lost ev-
erything - farming in Florida is completely
different from farming in Kentucky - but he
learned from his mistakes. He talked to oth-

er farmers and learned how to grow crops
in Florida's heat and sandy soil, using more
fertilizers and watering more often. Oh, yes,
and good ol' trial and error.
He learned his lesson well, judging from
the fruits of his labors these days.
They're farming just 1.5 acres - it is, after
all, something to keep him busy in his retire-
ment. Mary Sue continues to teach English
at LaBelle High School.
They're both obviously very pleased with
their success. Not only are they growing ter-
rific vegetables, they're having a great time
doing it.
"We meet such interesting people," Mary
Sue said. "They stop to look and buy some
vegetables." Probably the most interesting
visitor they've had to date is an English lady
who came back and brought them some
seeds from her home - cabbage and green
beans - to grow for her.
The Smiths are proud of their garden. You
might want to check them out - 7474 CR 78,
just past the Riverside Retreat (the old Meth-
odist Camp).
Right now they still have beautiful sweet
red strawberries - a variety called Festival de-
veloped by the University of Florida. They've
also got cabbage, collards and turnips as
well as strawberries.

Locals meet Florida GOP chairman
Hendry County Republican Executive Committee Members Kristina Kulpa, State
Committee Women; Steve Nisbet State Committeeman; and Hendry County Re-
publican Chairman Mel Karau joined newly-elected David Bitner (second from
right) Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. Chairman Bitner was elected
from a slate of five candidates on the second ballot in Orlando on Jan. 23. Dave
Bitner is a longtime Floridian, a lifelong Republican, a small business owner
and a former member of the Florida Legislature. As an owner of the Charlotte
Sun-Herald, Dave built a business from the ground up and saw firsthand the
need to cut government red tape and fight for the lower taxes on small busi-
nesses and families. In 1992, Dave was elected by the people of District 71 to
serve as State Representative in the Florida House of Representatives. Dave
served eight years in the Florida Legislature and never asked for one earmark,
returning taxpayer dollars to the state from his office every quarter. Dave earned
a reputation as a hard-working, common sense conservative committed to cut-
ting the size of Florida's government and fighting for lower taxes. Chairman Mel
Karau said, we are looking forward to working with Chairman Bitner and Gover-
nor Scott as we prepare for victory in 2012.
