Center is here: To help cancer patients

ACS resource center open

By Patty Brant
Caloosa Belle
People are diagnosedwith can-
cer every day. Every day someone
begins a torturous new journey
through mental, emotional and
physical pain. Most often they
have friends and loved ones who
share their ups and downs.
Many cancer patients may not
realize that they also have friends
they do not know, there to help
them through. Medical personnel
are there to deal with the disease,
but there's more to recovery than
what doctors can do.
Volunteers from the American
Cancer Society (ACS) right in La-
Belle are prepared to play a sup-
portive but important role in help-
ing patients back to health.
The county's first Cancer Pa-
tient Resource Center is now Caloosa Belle/Patty Bran

dence that had been proposed in June by
Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting
for independence, Congress turned its atten
tion to the Declaration of Independence, a
statement explaining this decision, which
had been prepared by a Committee of Five,
with Thomas Jefferson as its principal au-
thor. Congress debated and revised the Dec
laration, finally approving it on July 4.
These events gave America its indepen-
dence and freedom from England. 233 years
later celebrations still take place every 4th
of July honoring these rights our ancestors
fought and died for.
Families all over the nation come togeth-
er to celebrate and that is what is happening
right here in LaBelle. The Chamber of Com-
merce is spearheading a celebration in Bar-
ron Park on July 4 which starts at 5 p.m. and
ends around 8 p.m.
Barron Park will close for traffic at I so ev
eryone can get set-up. The Chamber of Com-
merce will have hot dogs, pork sandwiches,
drinks, etc. under the pavilion. The Kiwanis
will make bird feeders out of pinecones with
honey and peanut butter. There will be rope
jumping and hula hoops for the kids (and
the young at heart) to test their skills. The
Gathering of Christian Men will have snow
cones and popcorn. The Swamp Cabbage
Queen Committee will have a booth with
glow sticks for everyone's pleasure. The
American Business Women's Association
will have slushes and also a raffle. The Salva-
tion Army will set-up a donation box for its

canned food drive. So bring a can of food to
help out our families that are in need. The
Caloosa Humane Society will have soft ice
cream. They will also be accepting dona-
tions of money, bleach, cat litter, newspa-
pers, etc. The Humane Society also wants
patrons of the celebration to remember that
pets are scared of fireworks.
The City of LaBelle will set up three FREE
games for the kids enjoyment. There will be
a ship bounce house, a slide and a jousting
game. The city is also furnishing around
$7,000 worth of fireworks with the explo
sions and oohs and aahs to begin at approxi-
mately 9 p.m.
All proceeds from this celebration will go
to the Chamber's Christmas in the Park. So
make your family a part of the LaBelle family
and join in the celebration at Barron Park.

inmate extra charge

By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
IMMOKALEE -When an inmate is
charged with possession of contraband, it
usually means that he or she was found to
be in possession of illegal drugs, or in fewer
cases, a weapon.
The gravity of the crime is such that a per-
son charged with one faces the possibility of
a felony charge.
In the case of one inmate at the Hendry
Correctional Institution, however, the intent
doesn't seem to have been a cheap narcotic
thrill, or hiding a potentially lethal arm.
No, it seems that in this case, all the sus-
pect wanted was someone to talk to.
The purported incident happened on May
23, at approximately 9:25 p.m. while a stan
dard security check was being conducted
inside the facility in Immokalee.
According to the arrest report, that's
when one of the correctional officers walk-

ing through the "F" dorm thought he heard
what sounded like somebody talking to an
other via speakerphone.
Peering through a window outside of the
cell, the officer couldn't see inside. When he
opened the door to get in, he spotted the in-
mate sitting on the toilet inside and talking
on a cell phone.
The inmate reportedly stood up and
threw the phone into the toilet and flushed.
The officer called for assistance and the
inmate was placed in hand restraints.
After they escorted him out of the cell,
officers were able to recover a silver Nokia
cell phone -- with an AT&T plan -- from the
toilet. Apparently, the flushing did not work
and the phone had become lodged in the
drain.
Officers charged Alex T. Bell with posses-
sion of contraband.

Thanks for participating!
Community theater
or religious arena
As a concerned patron of the firehouse
theater, and someone concerned about the
children's program, I have heard from some
of the children that they are being forced
to omit certain words from the play, due to
some families religious beliefs. As a Chris-
tian I have never been told by my church,
pastor or my bible, bikini or hunky was a
bad, bad, bad word, yet they cannot use
them in a song. What gives the Comm. The
ater the right to impose their religious non
sense on the other children in the play. The
children have complained, but their protest
was ignored. My grandchild paid her $75.00
to participate in this production only to be
treated like she had no voice or say. This is
a community theater not church. I just don't
understand why someone else's religious
beliefs should be forced on everyone else,
since it isn't a bad word to begin with. Since
my grandchild is a Christian, if this were in
church at least we would have some input
as to whether it could be used or not. As it
stands now there is no compromise.
Editors Note: This response was made
by Emily A. Ankeney: The purpose of the
Firehouse Cultural Center Summer Theat-
rical Community Children's Program is to
produce and promote a wholesome, mod
est, family oriented, FUN experience for our
community's youth. This program gives our
teens and adolescents the opportunity to
learn and deliver many aspects of a "live"
theatrical production. The volunteers teach

acting, stage direction and lighting, sing-
ing, choreography, sound and set building.
Most importantly the program tries to teach
the children self respect and respect for oth-
ers, along with self confidence and life skills
to build on for years to come. Our purpose
is to provide an opportunity for these young
people to discover their talents, learn new
skills, make new friends, enjoy teamwork
and give back to our community.
A modest fee ($75.00) is charged to
cover the cost of the production. This fee
allows the children the opportunity to par-
ticipate in an adult supervised, educational,
FUN program. Like other summer programs
i.e. basketball, tennis, YMCA, vacation bible
school, the children are held to certain be-
havioral standards, expectations and re-
sponsibilities not only to themselves but
their cast mates, families and community.
This 5 week program consist of 15 hours
of participation per week including all of
the above, snacks, drinks, 4 live shows, 2
complementary tickets per child, program
T-shirts, souvenir photo DVDs, a copy of the
play on DVD, a cast party and last but not
least FUN! This is a children's program and
we are here to keep the children as young
and innocent as possible until they actu
ally have to grow up and deal in the "real
world".
I have lead a small group of volunteers
for the last four (4) years to help regenerate
this Summer program for our impression-
able youth with the intent of giving them
options in a small community. I believe any
community volunteer program should help
its citizens, young and old, become better
individuals, better citizens in the commu-
nity, along with giving them an opportunity
to grow and learn how to properly express
their opinion.
I personally invite everyone in our com-
munity to come see our theatrical produc-

Catering Businesses
In Glades and Hendry counties, are you
required to have a commercial license to
run a catering business out of your home
without a commercial kitchen.
There are catering businesses in these
two counties that are running these busi-
nesses out of their homes without licenses.
I understand in Fort Myers it is a require-
ment. You must have a commercial license
and a commercial kitchen.
How can Glades and Hendry counties al-
low some businesses to circumvent the law
while others have to abide by the law.
Please help clear up this issue.
Thank you.
Editors Note: A catering business is con-
sidered a home occupation. In both coun
ties a Business Tax Receipt (a new name
for an occupational license) is applied for.
Inspections have to be made by different
county agencies before approval of the li-
cense can be granted. These inspections
determine if any changes have to be made
to the home. These changes have to be
made by the owner so that he may conduct
the business within the realm of the law.
A county health department inspector
would have to determine whether the kitch
en was sufficient for a catering business.

THANK YOU
It is with deep appreciation that we,
the family of Lewis J. Nobles, Jr., pay
tribute to those who honored our
husband, father, grandfather, great-
grandfather, uncle and brother.
Although his departure from this life
has brought us great sorrow, we are
rejoicing in his freedom from pain.
To each of you who expressed your
love, care, and concern through vis-
its, cards, beautiful flowers, delicious
food, or just a prayer, we offer a hum-
ble thank you.
The family also wishes to say a spe-
cial thank you to his pasters, Jorge
and Asia Rodriguez. In addition, we
give special thanks to Ms. Cindy
Miller whose music soothed our soul
and of course, to Deanna Hansen
who kept the wheels turning and
kept us fed. This thank you list
would not be complete with a very
warm and special thank you to Cecil,
Ann, Kimberly, and Daniel Akin who
held our hand all the way. Their serv-
ices and care go far beyond that of
professionals they supply agape
love.
We pray that God will return to
each of you "100-fold" the blessings
you have so generously bestowed on
our family. We thank God for every
remembrance of you.
Sincerely

Geraldine Burchard Nobles and
Family.

Athletic Dept. yard sale
The third annual LHS Yard Sale is com-
ing this September! They will be collect-
ing your donations all summer long. Clean
out your garage and help the LaBelle High
School Athletic Department in the process!
They have arranged for a covered and air
conditioned storage facility for your good
used items. In the face of tough economic
times, the annual athletic budget has been
severely reduced. To offset these reductions,
they are hoping for your generous donations
to help the athletes at LaBelle High School
during the 2009 2010 school year. No do-
nation is too small, nor too large. They can
accept furniture, clothes, collectible items
and any previously loved, but no longer
needed items. They only ask that they be in
good and still usable condition and that any
items of clothing be washed before they are
donated. Please call LaBelle High School at
674-4120 to arrange a pickup of your items.
All messages will be forwarded to Mel
Greenleaf who is in charge of this fundraiser.
Thank you in advance for your generous and
continued support of athletics at LHS.

pants must purchase AAU or USA wrestling

Wipeout!
Wax up your surfboards, get out your beach blankets and catch the wave of
this swell surf musical! It's just another sunny day at Avalon Beach until Mom
and Pop announce they're selling their beloved surf shop and teen hangout.
The snobbish developers from the nearby ritzy Cove want Avalon's stretch of
sand... for a parking lot! But Mom and Pop's daughter Midge and all the loyal
Avalon kids are determined-they're not going to let that happen! Riptide, the
local kahuna, enters the big surf contest to vie for the grand prize money that
will keep The Shack's doors open, but the crowd from the Cove will do anything
to put the kibosh on Rip winning the prize money, including sabotage! When
Riptide breaks his leg in a surfing accident (thanks to the conniving developer's
son Reef), it's up to Midge to step onto her Billabong and go up against the big
boys. This surf musical-complete with hysterical onstage surfing that's easy to
stage-takes us back to a simpler time when life was keen, the music was cool
and the world was about to change. Gnarly, dudes! July 9, 10, 11 @ 7pm and
July 12th @ 2pm. Ticket prices: $7.00 with reservation and $10.00 at the door.

LaBelle Little League 10 and 11 year olds bring

home the District 18 Championship

The District 18 Little League baseball
10 and 11 year old all-star tournament was
played in LaBelle at Davis-Pratt last week.
The tournament started Wednesday, June
24, and continued all week with the cham-
pionship game being played Saturday, June
27.
There were four teams competing, San
Carlos, LaBelle, Bonita Springs, and Le-
high. Those who attended the games were
treated to some great baseball. Wednesday
games had Bonita Springs facing off against
LaBelle, and Lehigh playing San Carlos. La-
Belle dropped the first game to Bonita 2-1,
after a hard fought game that went into ex-
tra innings, and San Carlos came up short
against Lehigh with a score of 6-3.
Thursday's action placed LaBelle against
San Carlos, and Lehigh against Bonita. La
Belle fell behind in the first inning 7-1, but
never gave up, and continued to score runs

every inning to drive the game into extra in
nings, finally pulling it off at the end with a
score of 12-11. Lehigh beat Bonita Springs
6-5.
Friday pitted a hard playing Lehigh
against a determined LaBelle, and San Car-
los against Bonita Springs. The winner of
the LaBelle/Lehigh game would most defi-
nitely be in the championship game on Sat-
urday. LaBelle jumped out to an early lead
and never looked back, winning 8-0. Bonita
Springs beat San Carlos, setting the stage for
the championship game on Saturday with
LaBelle facing Bonita Springs.
"We knew we could play with anyone in
the tournament, but that come from behind
win was just what this team needed. It was
a shot of momentum for us", said LaBelle
manager Marty Howell.
The championship game started at one
o'clock Saturday, and was 6 innings of well

played baseball. LaBelle scored first with a
first inning solo home run by Baylen Mc-
Cormick. In the third Glenn Burton blasted
a double that scored two from second and
third running the score to 3-0.
Bonita Springs was not finished though
- they scored one run on an error, and kept
runners in scoring position. LaBelle's stingy
defense continued to fight and hold them
off. After a solo home run by Bonita's Kevin
Long in the sixth, LaBelle was able to shut
the door and seal the victory 3-2. Glenn Bur
ton shined on the pitchers mound giving up
just one hit and striking out seven in five in-
nings.
"Everyone on the team played a major
role in winning this championship. The boys
never gave up; they continued to battle from
the first pitch to the last. The first game we
played Bonita, their pitcher was very sharp
and we were nervous. We knew going into
the championship we would face him again,
and we knew we would put the ball in play,"
Howell said. "Our pitchers Glenn Burton,
Angel Vasquez, Robert 'Buster' Herrera,
and Jeffery Harris did a great job of shut-
ting down offenses, and keeping us in the
game."
This is LaBelle's first district champion-
ship in this age group since 1990. The next
stop for the team is July 24, 25 and 26 for the

sectional tournament which will be hosted
in Ft. Myers. Everyone is welcome to come
out and support the team. The field location
and game times will be announced as they
become available.
Coach Howell, on behalf of the entire
team and coaching staff, wants to say Thank
You for all the support given to his team
from LaBelle Little League, the fans, friends
and family members and everyone who has
taken time to support Little League.

$1,800 from the proceeds of Ford's Drive 4 Your School promotion that was held
recently. During the test-drive promotion, Ford Motor company donated $20 per
eligible test driver to a designated school. Langford Ford has held this promo-
tion to benefit LHS several times and we are very appreciative of their support

go indoors!

By Pat Dobbins
Millions of lightning flashes happen each
year and because lightning usually claims
one or two victims at a
time and does not usually
cause mass destruction of
property, it's not consid-
ered as a "high-risk" to
some people. Lightning
has killed over 60 people in
the last few years!
Did you know that
lightning can strike as far Pat
as 10 miles from the area Dobbins
where it's raining? That's
about the same distance that you can hear
thunder. So if you can hear the thunder, you
are within striking distance! Most lightning
deaths or injuries happen in the summer.
School is out for summer, so take time now
to educate your family on lightning safety!
"When lightning roars go indoors!" There
are some indoor dangers to remember as
well. Stay off of corded phones and comput
ers during lightning.
If a person is struck by lightning, please
call 911 and get medical care immediately.
Heart irregularities, cardiac arrest, nerve
damage and burns are common when
someone gets struck by lightning.
However, with proper treatment, includ-
ing CPR if necessary, most victims survive a
lightning strike. You are in no danger help-
ing a lightning victim. The charge will not
affect you. Please stay safe this summer and
remember:
"When Lightning Roars, Go Indoors!"
