Max Davis, who grew up in
LaBelle, responded to an appli-
cation on the CMT website ask-
ing for people to participate in
their new production, "The 12
Days of Redneck Christmas".
They were looking for people
who celebrated the holidays
with unusual traditions. With
producer/comedian Tom Ar-

nold (My Big Redneck Wed-
ding) at the helm of this show,
Davis knew they were looking
for something over the top and
completely outrageous. This
fall, he, his wife Margaret and
son Robert, submitted an ap
plication and video loaded with
zany traditions guaranteed to
get attention.
He was working on his trac-
tor in Bonita Springs when he
got a phone call saying his fam-
ily was the one they wanted.
They started filming in Novem-
ber and completed filming just

before Thanksgiving. Davis said
that he learned a lot about what
goes on behind the scenes and
had a new appreciation for
actors. "It was 40 degrees up
there when we were filming
the mud fight. We were wet
and cold and had to keep going.
We did whatever the director
wanted us to do, several times,
if necessary". Filming started
early each day and ended late.

On December 18, shortly
after noon, Sergeant Shawn

S.R.#29 for a traffic violation.
When pulling off the road, the
passenger of the vehicle was

something behind it. Backup

senger's actions.
When Sergeant Reed ap-
proached the driver he smelled
a strong odor of marijuana
from within the vehicle. Ser
geant Reed asked for and was
given permission to search the
vehicle. Deputy Sheriff Conc-

scene and while the passenger

Since Special Districts was
created in the '80s, it has always
shared office space with other de-
partments, said Director of Recy-
cling/Special Districts Terri Cross.
Finally, the department has the
room it needs to operate.
The building complex did not
use any ad valorem tax money
and was paid for strictly by spe-
cial districts and grant monies.
The buildings are environmental
ly friendly and built to withstand
severe weather. In fact, they have
been wired and may even be

for anything. It was the coolest
thing we ever did," he exclaimed.
His family agrees. His mother, Al-
lison Davis, of Felda, also made
an appearance on the show, as
well as numerous friends.
Although the show is about
Christmas, the producers wanted
to highlight the restorations Davis
does with old cars and trucks. Call-
ing himself the ultimate recycler,
he rescues old, abandoned and
forgotten vehicles and transforms
them. Those that he can't restore
completely, he'll use the front or
back ends to make furniture. The
program shows him re-doing an
old Coca Cola box into a love seat
that he presents to Margaret as a

Christmas gift. Two of his trucks,
a 1954 Chevy and a 1937 GMC,
were sold to country music leg-
end George Jones. The Chevy,
painted bright red and named the
"Possum Truck", was designed
as a tribute to Jones, and is com-
plete with a tag emblazoned with
"No Show", another of Jones'
nicknames. After he bought the
Chevy truck, Jones asked Davis if
he had anything that would "go a
little faster".
He showed Jones the GMC,
which is a turquoise street rod
powered by a Corvette engine,
and Jones loved it.
Inside his shop, he created a
rec room with lumber salvaged
from an old barn he deconstruct-
ed. Unique collectibles, signs and
photos adorn the walls. There is
even a stage and sound system in
case anyone wants to do a little

pickin' and grinnin'.
The 12 days of Redneck Christ-
mas is airing most days through
December 26. Please go to www. for show times and
additional videos and for informa-
tion on his restorations.

Children in Hendry and Glades
counties could soon have access
to a state-of-the-art bicycle safety
program and equipment. How-
ever, taking advantage of that op
portunity has a limited time frame
- the only thing lacking is a signa-
ture. The head of a local agency
must agree to be responsible for
housing the trailer, as well as pro-
viding tags and insurance.
The trailer is a self-contained
bicycle rodeo, carrying 40-60 bi-
cycles, traffic cones, helmets and
educational materials everything
necessary to put on a safety pre-
sentation -just add kids. The trail-
er can be pulled to any location
where volunteers can set up and
get down to the business of help-
ing kids learn road and bicycle
safety. Kids can either bring their
own bicycle or use one from the
trailer so all kids who show up
can participate.
The trailer could also be used
for other selected uses.

Bicycle safety
The Bicycle/Pedestrian Com-
mittee, represented by Linda
McVey, will have units in the
Swamp Cabbage Festival Parade
next February, including bikes
and the crash dummies.
The next BPAC meeting will be
Feb. 3 at the Coffee house on Fort
Thompson Ave. at 5 p.m.
Ms. McVey also noted that
Earth Day will be celebrated on
April 25 next year. It is uncertain if
it will be located at Barron Park or
the Capt. Hendry House in 2009.

2008 great year for Lake 0

By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News
Officials with the US Army
Corps of Engineers and the South
Florida Water Management Dis-
trict both agree, 2008 was a great
year for Lake Okeechobee and
environmental enhancement
The County Coalition for Re-
sponsible Management of Lake
Okeechobee, the St. Lucie and
Caloosahatchee Estuaries, and the
Lake Worth Lagoon heard from
the heads of those two agencies
Friday during their annual policy
meeting at Okeechobee's Shrine
Carol Wehle, Executive Direc
tor of the South Florida Water
Management District gave an up-
date on work done during 2008.
Weather challenges, restoration
opportunities, and the drought,
were three of the main obstacles
this year.
Ms. Wehle said the agency had
to respond to a water shortage
and a flood in the same year. They
initiated water restrictions which
for the most part were very well
"Water is more at the forefront
of the public now than it was be-
fore, that's a positive," she noted.
Ms. Wehle said they contin-
ued to improve the health of
Lake Okeechobee with removal
of invasive plants, additional tree
planting, the removal of 5,000 dis-
carded tires (50 tons) in the Lake,
cultivated apple snails in new
trees to provide snail kites with
food, and treated torpedo grass.
"We don't necessarily want
Lake Okeechobee to be nine feet,
but if that's what Mother Nature
provides, we try to make a posi
tive difference," she said.
Tropical Storm Fay was the big
gest storm of the year. It provided
to be a good drill for the Districts
Emergency Preparedness. Some
areas of the district saw up to 15
inches of rain. Lake Okeechobee
raised their level to close to 15.5
feet. The levels of the Lake have
declined since then and the fore-
cast for the dry season in 2009 is
less rainfall than normal.
Another big project this year
is the state's purchase of U.S.
Sugar. Ms. Wehle said a lot of
work has been done since June
30. She noted they have received
a tremendous amount of input
from the public on this purchase.
Governing Board meetings are
planned on December 15-16th
to decide on the direction of this
Wehle was asked about the
contamination present on US

Sugar property. She noted the
district conducted an exhaustive
environmental study. The District
has required US Sugar to spend
the money for the cleanup. U.S.
Sugar will pay the district 130 per
cent of the estimated cost to do
the cleanup. She also defended
the appraisals on the property.
Martin County Commissioner
Sarah Heard said they must get
the price right because they are
using taxpayers' dollars and will
resell part of the property. She
noted they must get the taxpayers
money back. She said she wants
to see more restoration projects.
She noted Martin County gave the
District $27 million in taxpayer
money and haven't seen any proj-
Federal dollars earmarked for
stimulus projects could be used
for permit ready projects in Mar-
tin and other counties.
Hendry County Commissioner
Kevin McCarthy said there is no
good plan for what they will use
the land for. He said more proj-
ects need to be located north of
the lake to clean up the water in
the Lake. He noted money spent
in the lake should mean fewer
dollars spent south of the Lake.
"We've got to protect the estuar-
ies, but you do it with a plan. We
are doing this backward."
"We are all going to be sorry
down the road. The sugar indus
try is going away anyway," he
Palm Beach County Commis-
sioner Jess Santamaria said he
was concerned about the loss of
jobs in the Glades due to the U.S.
Sugar purchase. He noted he has
not seen a plan to offset the loss
of jobs.
"I do hope there is a real se-
rious effort to look into this po-
tential problem. The people of
the Glades are already hungry
for jobs," he noted. He said un
employment in the Glades and
Hendry County are close to 20
Commissioner Donna Storter
of Glades County agreed with
Hendry County. She said they
need to be cautious with this
purchase. She also said she was
disappointed the Governors office
and his staff have not provided a
plan for the economic impacts.
The District has also moved
ahead with more land purchases
to protect the Everglades and
provide more water storage. The
District purchased 22,607 acres in
2008 at a cost of $196 million.
The district also completed
designs for a C-43 reservoir, and
Lakeside Ranch near Okeecho

bee. They completed the Chan-
dler Slough trailhead in Okeecho
bee and installed equestrian and
hunter trailheads at Allapattah in
western Martin County.
The district also completed the
purchase of the Brady Ranch.
The district also constructed a
weir to protect the S-65 E struc-
ture. It was completed two weeks
before Fay hit. Wehle said if the
work hadn't been done the struc-
ture would have failed and sig-
nificant flooding would have oc-
curred in the Kissimmee Valley.
Colonel Paul Grosskruger,
head of the US Army Corps of
Engineers office in Jacksonville,
said his department continued to
work on Lake Okeechobee, the
Kissimmee River restoration and
the Herbert Hoover dike in 2008.
He said they have focused on
the worst sections of the dike first.
A 22-mile section between Port
Mayaca and Belle Glade is due to
be repaired. 11 miles of the dike
are under construction.
Colonel Grosskruger said the
new lake regulation schedule has
worked better and has helped
prevent damaging releases of lake
water into the estuaries.
The Department of Agricul-
tures Rich Budell said budget cuts
have impacted money available
for best management practices
for ranchers.
Dr. Paul Gray of the Audubon
Society urged the Coalition to sup-
port more water storage projects
north of Lake Okeechobee.
Lee County thanked the South
Florida Water Management Dis-
trict for their work on the Caloo-
sahatchee River protection plan.
Storter thanked the District
and the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection for
work done on the Pearce Canal in
Buckhead Ridge.

Holiday scanner survey finds

nearly 99 percent accuracy rate

sumers are holiday shopping this
year, chances are excellent that
they will be charged the correct
That's the conclusion reached
by Florida Agriculture and Con-
sumer Services Commissioner
Charles H. Bronson following
a pre-holiday scanner survey in
which 63 stores in 28 Florida cit-
ies were inspected for scanner
In all, only 43 errors were
detected at the checkout lines
among 3,302 items tested -- an
error rate of just over 1 percent.
Moreover, nearly half of the errors
were in the favor of customers.
"Our retailers do a good job
keeping up with prices, includ
ing sale prices which frequently
change, and inputting accurate
information into their scanners to
reflect the actual price of the mer
chandise that they're selling," Mr.
Bronson said.
Only three of the 63 retailers
visited by Commissioner Bron
son's inspectors last week failed
their inspection, which means
that they had an error rate of 2
percent or more. Those receiving
a failing grade were a Petco in Mi-
ami, a Staples in Lake Mary and
a Circuit City in Orlando. As none
of them had been cited previously
for failing a scanner test, each has
received a warning letter and will
be placed on a higher frequency
of inspection.
While the survey found that
scanning errors are relatively un-
common, mistakes do occur. It
means that consumers need to
be aware of the price that they

OBITUARIES: A great guy died in LaBelle and the family didn't
even let anyone know. They didn't put an obituary in the paper. They
buried him in another state. I think they should have given his friends
and relatives in town more consideration.
LAWSUIT: In regard to the lawsuit filed against the sheriff's office
in regard to the policy requiring all pregnant women be placed on
light duty, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is painfully clear as to what can
and cannot be done REGARDLESS of what one or two people think.
We may not agree with the laws but if it is in place, FOLLOW IT! Now
here goes more taxpayers funds out the door along the other suits al-
ready in the works. I would imagine there will be more as well before
it is over and done with. A suit that is filed for Following the Law is a
little better to muster rather than one filed for NOT following the law.
LABELLE: It seems that the stories I here from my mother are be
coming less of a thing of the future and more of a thing of the past. I
am a young person in town, however I have lived here my whole life.
The more technology we get, the faster things go. We need to slow
down a bit and get back to helping each other. When I was younger it
seems like it would have been nothing to baby sit for the neighbors or
give the elderly lady down the street a hand with her yard work. Now
we are lucky if we have time to do our own work. The faster things
go, the less pride we take in them. As for these people dragging the
name of our town through the mud, I think they are a perfect example
of those who are spoiled by the easy come and they are not willing to
let go. The should stop thinking of only themselves and start thinking
about those they are supposed to have been working to help.
SHOPPING: It's a real job trying to find your "stuff." The big stores
are supposed to have everything but you can wear yourself out look-
ing for it.
DRESS CODE: LaBelle Middle School is the only school in the dis-
trict that has this dress code requirement banning hooded sweatshirts
and jackets. All the rest of them still have a bit of common sense. A
few people got together and had a meeting -- nobody else showed up
and they got to write their own dress code unopposed. The moral of
this story is, when they hold a meeting to do this stuff, you need to
show up as well. Or, you get what they cram down your throat. Oh
yeah, yes, I have a kid in this school so I know all too well the situation.
You end up purchasing two jackets for the child. One that they want,
and the one they can wear to school. My kid wants a UF jacket that
has a hood on it. But, since it can't be worn to school, that dictates
another jacket for school! My kid was not in that school then, so I got
what I got.
HOODS: I was born and raised in the north, as were my children.
After a few years of clothing my children with the typical hat, coat and
mittens, I realized that half the time they were running out without
their hat on. The good solution was to buy coats and sweatshirts with
attached hoods, and I told the kids to flip them up when needed to
keep the wind off their necks. Now, evidently, a hood has taken on a
brand new meaning. Just as with many other controls, we are trying
to get rid of the instrument of misuse rather than the misuse itself. Isn't
there a better way to handle this?

Thank you

Toys for Tots
Once again, the Toys for Tots
party was a great success! Many
of the county's most generous
people came laden with toys for
our youngest residents! About
100 people came to share the hol-
iday spirit and when the evening
was done, there were 190 toys
under the tree!
This was the 1 Ith Toys for Tots
party, and this one might well be
one of the most important. Be
cause of the current economic
times, the Marine Corps' drive has
not received its usual number of
donations. However, here in La
Belle/Ft. Denaud, we surpassed
the number of toys we contribut
ed last year! It's a heart-warming
effort, made possible by every-
one's generosity. And, not to be
outdone, Fiesta Tents, who pro-
vided our shelter from the cold
with one of its very colorful tents,
also donated to our effort!
Ronnie and Cathy Lee gath-
ered up our toy treasure and
they'll see them on their way to
the happy hands of some of the
county's children.
So many people to thank, and
no way to do it adequately! But
we're saying 'Thanx' anyway! For

Letters to the Editor

More on Aqua Isles
Dear Editor:
I am writing to correct false
and defamatory statements in re-
cent letters to the editor regarding
Aqua Isles Mobile Home Park.
I represented the seller in the
closing held June 29, 2007. Pursu-
ant to applicable statutes, notices
of the offer to purchase and an of-
fer to consider selling the property
to the park homeowners' associa-
tion were mailed to its president,
secretary and treasurer by certi-
fied mail on April 30, 2007, and
they were received by the three
officers on May 1, May 7 and May
9, 2007. 1 have the certified mail
receipts as proof of mailing and
receipt by the officers. We never
received a response from the as
sociation during the almost two
months between the mailed no
tices and the closing. Thus, state
ments that the homeowners were
never notified or that they were
never "given an opportunity to
buy the park" are patently false.
Further, because of the seller's
concern that the park might be
"condominimized" by the new
buyer, a clause was written into
the contract, and then later the
deed, that the park could not be
subdivided and sold to anyone
other than the homeowners' as-
sociation before July 3, 2012.
When at the last minute the
buyer balked at closing with this
restriction, the seller refused to
back down. Hence the apparent
effort now by the owner to sell
the property to the homeown-
ers since it cannot subdivide the
park, except through the hom-
eowners' association, for several
more years.
The park homeowners' asso-
ciation was properly notified and
the homeowners should look into
the problems within their organi-
zation before ignorantly blam-
ing the seller. Many members
opposed the purchase then and
now. Further, they couldn't raise
the money to buy it. The home
owners' association and its mem
bers could have purchased the
park in 2007 but it and they chose
to do nothing. There is no one to
blame for the current situation
but the association and its mem-
bers, as the seller did all it could
to help the park's residents.

The AIMHOA (Aqua Isles Mo-

and the Mediation Board of Aqua
Isles would like to address the ar-
ticle entitled "Aqua Isles Residents
Oppose Sale," dated Dec. 11, by
Patty Brant.
It is a fact that residents (600
strong during the winter season)
of Aqua Isles have supported
many LaBelle projects -- not only
by volunteering, but financially.
The residents support businesses,
churches, restaurants, grocery
stores, car dealers and many oth-
ers by spending money in the
community in which we live.
Many residents call LaBelle home
and live here year round with that
number increasing every year as
many snow birds convert to the

We find ways to endure

the death of a loved one. Though
the surviving ones are never "the

are able to handle life and walk,

We can go without food or
water and even air, though not for
very long.
There is one thing, however,
that is essential to living. If we

thing that is so crucial to life is

LaBelle style of living. But that
decision to live here permanently
may have changed once they read
your article of Dec. 11.
How would you like it if, as
a resident home owner of Aqua
Isles, who has his home listed
for sale and is possibly sold to a
prospective buyer and that pro-
spective buyer reads the article in
the local paper that states, "Now,
it seems, the park could cease to
exist if plans by a developer from
Arizona work out." Would not
that buyer question whether they
should buy into a Park at this par
ticular time?
Then, there was another false
statement in the newspaper. The
current owners of Shamrock
Morgan Aqua Isles LLC, Inc. are
Shamrock Holdings and Morgan
Management. These owners do
buy and sell mobile home and
RV communities as investors,
not developers and are currently
under contract to sell the park to
the AIMHOA. Both homeowners
and RVers are given the oppor-
tunity to purchase a share. Upon
completion of this sale, the park
would become a resident-owned
community. As such, the money
generated from rent stays in the
community in the form of master
mortgage buy down, improve-
ments, maintenance, less fees for
shareholders, etc. In other words,
the revenue from the park re-
mains in LaBelle and is not sent to
investors in Arizona or New York.
The selling price, with the help
of a state-appointed mediator,
legal council and the Mediation
Board, was lowered from 20 to 16
million dollars based on its rental
income. Aqua Isles has 225 mo-
bile home lots and 140 RV sites
and is a revenue-producing prop-
erty. It will require a large number
of residents to participate before

The AIMHOA has asked and
received from the current park
owners an extension so that we
have up to Jan. 20, 2009, to get
enough participants, do the nec
essary studies and appraisal and
have a closing in late February.
The owners have signed an agree-
ment knowing full well that many
of the potential buyers are still up
north until after Christmas.
Added to the misinformation
is that, while a former home own-
ers' board had a First Right of Re-
fusal prepared by an attorney and
signed by our former owner, it
was never recorded! Unrecorded
documents are useless; and then
the former board lost the docu-
ment so that our current board
could not rectify this mistake.
Yes, the economy has impact-
ed everyone -- some more severe-
ly than others but, if you are going
to live in Aqua Isles, you are going
to pay rent. Why not take that rent
amount and apply it toward pur-
chasing a share in the Aqua Isles
Cooperative? As a shareholder-
owner you receive a Memoran-
dum of Occupancy with your lot
number attached and your share
becomes real property and is

Most prospective mobile
home owners prefer purchas
ing a home in a resident-owned
community-thus assuring that
the community remains a mobile

home/RV retirement community
and their investment will increase
not decrease in value.
We trust that this will give
the residents of LaBelle and the
community a much better un-
derstanding of what the AIMHOA
is trying to accomplish and, as a
community, we fully expect that
LaBelle will give their full support
to the residents of Aqua Isles as
we strive to become a resident-
owned retirement community. If
we as residents do not purchase
enough shares to acquire our
community, Aqua Isles is certain
to be sold again.

As a nation, we are witnessing
the Federal Reserve giving $800

when Florida is saddled with a
$5.8 billion budget shortfall.
Where is the transparency?
Back in 2007, this same organi-

$51,813,488 from Mabry Carlton

To the ill-informed this $52 mil-

Bon Appetite
I trust that each and every one
of you and your families will have
a wonderfull and blessed Christ
mas. To those of you who know
me well, I trust there is no doubt
as to my penchant for seeing the
positive in every situation, regard-
less of the negative implications.
Always applying the Neville rule of
thumb, that there is no such thing
as a problem. They are just op
portunities in disguise. Once you
have accepted this as your guide
you can then apply the antidote
for what I call being "SNIOP"ed.
Subject to the Negative Influence
of Other People. From birth we
are all subjected to the negatives
in life. Why, for example, are traf
fic lights not called "go" lights
instead of "stop" lights. Better
that you accept that God, or that
supreme being, whatever that
is to each of us, must have had
a great sense of humor to have
created this cataclysmic, chaotic,
hodgepodge, we call humanity.
In my heart I believe that if today
is my last day on earth, I will have
given my best efforts and loved,
laughed, and "Forest Gumped"
myway through it---myway, while
hopefully serving as a positive in-
fluence on my family and friends.
I believe there are two things you
must have and do. First you must
have an attitude for life. Don't be
afraid to care enough to do your
very best. Second: don't be anon-
ymous. Make some noise. Get
involved. Demand happiness and
don't let it elude you. Don't take
life too seriously. Reduce threats
and insults to the ridiculous. Al
ways consider the source and
react accordingly. Refuse to lower
yourself to the others level. As my
Dad used to say, "Bill, the first
hundred years are all down-hill
and nobody gets out alive." Noth-
ing is permanent and to change
is to progress and succeed. The
sum of who you are will never be
based on what you can obtain or
possess. You will only be remem-
bered for what you chose to do
with what you were born with,
already have, and how you apply
and use it. Celebrate Christmas as
if it's the best one, or even pos
sibly the last one you'll ever have.
Turn your struggles into character
building attributes for the greater
benefit of your loved ones, and
celebrate LIFE! There is an old
saying that I feel has substance in
what I consider to be the Drama
that each of us is playing out in
our assigned, scripted role in life.
The saying goes like this, "Life is a
banquet and most of us are starv-
ing to death." Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year! Bon Appe-
tite! You deserve it!

Near the end of that awful ordeal,

In life we all feel that way
sometimes. We get rammed un-
expectedly by pressure or illness.
Sudden unemployment can sink
us quicker than we can swim. It
is when we are so overcome with
stresses that we sit on the bottom
of life's ocean and tap out a signal
to others -to anyone who will lis
ten "Is... there... any... hope?"
It is in those moments that we
wonder if we will ever recover.
Without hope, we will not.
However, on the reverse side
of this, so long there is hope, we
can press on. It is amazing how
we can endure if there is even a
small measure of assurance that
hope is either in reach or on the
At Christmas, however, a
handle of hope is extended to us.
Expectation is ushered into life in
the most marvelous measure. It is
as though God puts on underwa-
ter equipment and dives into our
ocean of anxiety. Assuredly He
begins tapping in a code that pen-
etrates our weariness, signaling,
"I... am ... in... control... and...
I... love... YOU! Therefore...
you... have... hope."
Clearly this message of hope
is seen in the coming of the Lord
Jesus. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians
15:19 that, "for this life, we have

hope in Christ." His words super-
sede the "Do-it-myself" crowd.
"Self-sanctification" offers little
hope for the abused. The "Try
a-little-harder" mantra wears
mighty thin to the hurting alco-
holic or drug addict.
No, in the toughest junctures
in life where hope has been
sucked out of our souls, we find
that we need more than a 50/50
proposition. We need help, We
need hope.
We need Jesus.
Someone put the following
thoughts together. I have come to
appreciate them very much, Per-
haps you will, too.
If our greatest need had been
information, God would have
sent us an educator.

LaBelle Middle School holds first Science Fair in ten years

On December 4, the LaBelle
Middle School held its first Sci
ence Fair in over ten years! The
students were asked to discover
a problem that they would enjoy
finding the answer to, and then
to figure out a way to solve the
problem. In order to do this, the
students put in months of work
while receiving support from
their parents and teachers. Their
science teachers taught the sci-

entific method and what was
needed for a science fair project.
The language arts teachers and li-
brarians helped the students write
and type their research plans, re-
search papers, and abstracts. The
math teachers taught the students
to make graphs by hand and by
using computer generated graph-
ics. Parents supported their chil-
dren by offering encouragement,
ideas and supplies needed for the

experiments. This turned out to
be even more of a learning expe
rience for everyone involved than
any had anticipated!

Faith in the Marketplace

Merry Christmas not

heard that often now

I wish you all a Merry Christ
mas! I don't hear that very often
anymore, ex-
cept among
friends and ac-
quaintances. In
stores and in
public in gen-
eral, it has been
replaced by the
politically cor-
rect "happy Fr. Alan
holidays." Now, Kelmereit
I'm willing to
accept, without getting all bent
out of shape, a greeting from a
stranger that I might have a happy
holiday After all, the greetings I've
received seem to have been quite
sincere and well intentioned, and
probably offered in compliance
with a management instruction.
My normal reply, however is al-
ways, "Merry Christmas."
I don't do that to make a pub-
lic statement. I do it because I
am a person who will celebrate
Christ' Mass. It is the holy day of
Jesus' birth, of God becoming in-
carnate. I'm not embarrassed or
hesitant because of what Christ-
mas is. And I wish others only
what I hope for myself a merry
Christmas, that is, a Christmas
filled with joy and good cheer.
If someone wishes me a happy
whatever their holiday is, I will
accept that with grace and ap-

preciation for their kindness. If
someone decides to be offended
by my Christmas wish, I am sorry
that they suffer from the bitter-
ness they've allowed to infect
their soul.
Christmas is indeed a holy day.
No matter how we celebrate it in
our American culture, no matter
how commercial it has become,
it is and always will be the day
we celebrate the birth of Jesus
Christ, Savior of the world. I made
a promise the first Christmas af-
ter I was ordained, that no mat-
ter where I might serve, there
will always be a worship service
on Christmas Day. So, at 9:30 am
on Christmas day, at Good Shep
herd, that promise will be kept
once again. Those who are will-
ing to make time in their busy
day will join with me, and we
will celebrate in praise and wor-
ship the birth of our Lord, Jesus
Christ. We will hear the story and
sing the hymns, and be reminded
once again of the greatest gift that
has ever been given in the history
of the world.
So, once again, I wish you a
very merry Christmas!

Not unless mom does
There was no way that little Rylee Pack could be convinced to
sit on Santa's lap. So Mommy (Kristin) had to try out Santa's
lap before Kylee would agree to even a double-decker sit-
ting. Santa and an elf had a place of honor with their own
Christmas tree at the Rodeo Bar & Grill. A car and motorcycle
show was held on Saturday with cash prizes and trophies
for the winners. Instead of an entrance fee, every participant
brought a toy or toys to be distributed by the Salvation Army
to kids in the community.

Community support to help with cancer battle

Florida Community
Bank proudly
supports Lucy's
Angels in fight
against breast cancer

LaBELLE- Once the Christmas
decorations are down, Florida
Community Bank will kick off the
2009 New Year in pink by once
again supporting Lucy's Angels.
Lucy's Angels for Breast Cancer
Care, Inc. recognizes that because
the population in rural counties is
small, residents are often the last
on the list to receive assistance, in
spite of the fact that the general
income level is lower. Statistics
show that the farther a woman
has to travel, the less likely she is
to be screened. Since the best pro-
tection is early detection, Lucy's
Angels partners with local agen-
cies, like Hendry Regional Medi-
cal Center to provide free mam-
mograms for qualified residents
of Glades and Hendry Counties.
Lucy's Angels motto is "By the
Community, For the Community,"
a motto that Florida Community
Bank also takes pride in. Here is
how you can help make sure that
the women in Glades and Hendry
Counties are receiving the medi-
cal attention that they need in or-
der to detect breast cancer early.
After all, you never know when
the person in need could be your
grandmother, mother, daughter,
sister or aunt.
Florida Community Bank will
be selling raffle tickets for a pink
ribbon blanket that was hand-
made by Mary Bartoshuk and
donated to Lucy's Angels to raise
money for free mammograms.
The blanket will be displayed
in FCB's lobby throughout the
month of January. Stop by and
purchase your chance to win!
Tickets are 1 for $2 or 3 for $5. The
lucky winner will be announced
on Jan. 31, at the Bosom Buddies
Another opportunity to sup-
port Lucy's Angels is through its
annual walkathon. The Second
Annual Bosom Buddies Walk-
athon will be held on Saturday,
Jan. 31, 2009. The walk will be-
gin and end at Barron Park. Make
this a fun event for your family,
friends, or co-workers by gather-
ing a group of 5 or more people
to walk together. If you form a
team, the entry fee is only $12 per
person. If you do not have a team,

Blanket drive success

with hopes for more
Maria Sandoval hands over 90 blankets to Arlene Betancourt
to use for our area's homeless. In this season of cold, damp
weather, a clean blanket can make an immense difference in
someone's life. Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church
and First Bank joined forces to gather blankets. The deadline
is Dec 29; but even after that, they won't be turned down.
Stop by Carlson Memorial or First Bank and bring in new or
clean used blankets. Arlene told Maria that they had given
out the last blanket; so these were sorely needed.

during the Holidays

By Brenda Barnes
Nibble here -nibble there
nibble-nibble everywhere! The
holiday season
gives us plenty
of opportunities
to nibble on all
sorts of good-
ies. You might
be baking cook-
ies, making
candy, or cook
ing a complete Brenda
holiday meal, Barnes
but please
remember that each time you
"taste" something, those are add-
ed calories. Calories may be the
last thing that you want to hear
about just before the big holiday,
but a nibble here and a nibble
there will add up to a lot of extra
calories before you realize it. It's
okay to eat some of your favorite
foods during the holiday season,
but try not to go overboard. Try
to plan ahead. Decide what foods
are your favorites and what foods
you can do without. Don't be
afraid to say "no". If your Mom
or Grandmother begs you to try
all of their hearty dishes, just tell
them that you want to save your
taste buds for your favorites.
Don't skip meals! You need to
keep your body satisfied so that
you don't over indulge at the end
of the day. Drink plenty of water
and munch on something healthy
before starting to cook or before
attending any parties. Try to keep
yourself busy by talking with fam-
ily and friends instead of focusing
on the table full of goodies. If you
do happen to splurge one day,
it doesn't have to sabotage your
entire holiday healthy eating plan.
Accept the choices that you made
and start fresh the next day with-
out feeling guilty and give it your

best. Happy Holidays and remem-
ber, be healthy and be happy!
