A cold fron10111t moving through

ntni\ areas anid is increasing the
potential for w wildfires.
"" I'h lo\\ temperatures cre-

Agriculture and Consumer Ser-
vices 'harles Bronson. "A lack
of the ty pical tropical moisture
usually seen during hurricane
season has left Florida drier than
normal in spite of recent rain-
fall. These frosts and freezes will
make a bad situation \\orse."
Recently, Bronson stated that
his Di\ vision of Forestr) is expect-
ing \\ildtire acti\ it\ during 2011
to be higher than normal due to
the strlonI la Nina weather r con-
ditions currently in place. Similar
coiditi.ons ill the past ha\e been
ass,, 'hated \\ith Florida's five
most acie w\\ildfire \ears.
'This cold front could lead to
increased w wildfire acti it\ sooner
than \spected." Bronson said. "I
w would urge all residents to do e\ -

erything possible to increase the
probability that their home swill
surv i e a wildfire."
Bronson urges everyone to
concentrate on the three most im-
portant areas of their home:
1. Root and gutters should be
free of all vegetation and debris.
2. Around the sides of the
house- keep the area clean and
landscape the area using plants
s ith low lammability; keep
organic mulch, especially pine
stra, rn. moist.
3. Withi n 30 feet of the house -
keep the area mowed, watered
within current local water man-
agement guidelines, and keep all
debris and brush picked up.
"Il's important for everyone
to remember that almost 80 per-
cent of all wildfires in Florida
are caused by humans. Wild-
fires that don't start can't injure
residents or damage structures.
Be careful %when using anything

Merry Christmas

Great food. family & friends, and oh A eanh. all those I
Christmas gifts. Running around shopping to get l
just that perfect gift.
Indeed Christmas is a busI time of the \ ear. The
lights and the (Christmas trees. I pray that you and :
I won't miss the "real reason" *se celebrate
Christmas
\\here would we be without .Jesus. Jesus loves me
this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Yes, lie does love you and me.
God's Nword says in IuMatthen 1:2.1 "1tehold. A virgin shall he with child.
and shall bring forth a son. and the shall call Iiis name Emmanuel".
which being interpreted is, (;od wi ith us.
Christmas also can be a stressful time, not enough money, loved ones
sick, family members recently passed a- ay, maybe. a jot) lost, or
struggling with household bills. \We have indeell have had a tough time.
But in spite of this, lets do our best to remember Iwhat 2nd Cor 9:15
tells us, "Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift". Praise God.
Merry Christmas
Harry Hatcher
& all of us at
1W'ect.rn StvIr

We will close at 4:00 on

FCCD makes Christmas bright for

Guardian ad Litem children
The Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency donated toys, as it does every year,
to the local Guardian ad Litem program. This year, approximately 100 children in
the Guardian ad Litem program received toys. First Christian Church of Starke
sponsored a few children as well, while security personnel at the Bradford County
Courthouse chipped In as well. Pictured above in a room full of toys are (I-r): Brad-
ford County Sheriff Gordon Smith, Donna Young of Florida State Prison, Jean
Shuford, FCCD vice president and staff assistant at Florida State Prison, Earl Crews
of New River Correctional Institution, Cyndl Davis of the Reception and Medical
Center, Lisa Rodgers of the Guardian ad Litem program, Diane Taylor of the Brad-
ford County Sheriff's Office, Joe Gorden, Guardian ad Litem volunteer, and Phillip
Sellers of the Bradford County Sheriff's Office.

Giving so others can give
The Kiwanis Club of Starke's Aktion Club, which is composed of consumers of the
Arc of Bradford County, has sold candy bars and held other fundraisers throughout
the year in order to provide toys to 50 children this Christmas. Whiskey River Sa-
loon owners John and Joann Minshew helped support the cause by donating
S1,000. TOP: Arc of Bradford County Executive Director Sherry Ruszkowski (far
*right) accepts a check from Joann Minshew (center) and Whiskey River employee
Darlene Prescott. (Whiskey River employees not pictured are Red Bargeon and De-
bra Hammond.) ABOVE: The Aktion Club consists of 27 members, including (front,
