A USERS MANUAL FOR THE FARM LAB
INTERACTIVE BUDGET GENERATOR
Constance M. Lee and Rom E. Alderman
INTRODUCTION
This document describes the steps necessary to interac-
tively supply the data for the University of Florida version
of the Oklahoma State budget generator. It requires the user
to be familiar with the IFAS Network VAX computer system. Users
should familiarize themselves with some of the common VAX
symbols, commands, particularly with respect to the management
of files, (reference various VAX manuals, Help, computer aided
instruction, .....).
Users should also familiarize themselves with Economic
Information Report (E.I.R.) #126, "A Users Manual for the FARM
Lab Crop Budget Generator", E.I.R. #127, "A Users Manual for
the FARM Lab Livestock Budget Generator", and E.I.R. #164, "A
Users Manual for the Farm Lab Cash Flow Anaysis Program".
These are the user instruction manuals for the processing of
crop, livestock and cash flow budgets respectively.
Constance Lee is a student programmer/analyst in the Food and
Resources Economics Department and senior author of the docu-
mentation. Rom Alderman is an Economic Analyst in the Food
and Resource Economics Department and senior author of
program's design.
If users intend to process more than 1 or 2 budgets it is
suggested that they increase the block space in their VAX
accounts to at least 1000 blocks. This will provide suffi-
cient space for the maintenance and management of a number of
budget files. Also, a VT100 type terminal with advanced video
options is needed.
Accessing the Budget Generator
Type "BUDGET" after the $ prompt. The "BUDGET" command
accesses the budget generator and brings the program menu up
on the video.
EProram Menu
The menu for the Budget Generator consists of 6 options:
1. Crop Budgets select and modify the stored crop
livestock budgets.
2. Livestock Budgets select and modify the stored
livestock budgets.
3. Cashflow and Execute select and modify cash flow
information.
4. Execute Only enables you to process your budgets.
5. View Processed Budgets enables you to view your
modified budget after execution.
6. Exit exit from the program.

To view a CROP BUDGET or a LIVESTOCK BUDGET, type in (1)
or (2) respectively then ERETURN3. The list of all the stored
budgets available through the budget generator is shown on
the screen. The up and down arrow keys will enable you to
scroll through the entire list. Press [RETURN] to be prompted
for the filename you wish to view. Type in the exact nine
character spelling, press [RETURN], and wait while the budget
is being located by the budget generator.

Each menu selection will allow you to complete a series
of forms (computer screenswith labeled input fields)
designed to collect the data needed by the budget generator.
The changes you make will not be saved unless you give the
file a new name. The new name will also make it easily ident-
ifiable to you and differentiate it from the already existing
files on the main budget account.

Form 1
Fprm 1 gives a brief introduction and description to the
budget generator. Identification code, title and footnote and
their usage are explained in the Users Manual for the Farm
Lab Crop Budget Generator. To change this information, press
the TAB key until you locate the position you wish to alter.
The LINE FEED key and/or DELETE key are used to change the
information. LINE FEED will delete the entire field that the
cursor is in. DELETE key will delete the character to the
left of the cursor. Typing in the new information over the
old and using the space bar will delete unwanted characters to
the right of the cursor. The side arrow keys also give you
lateral movement within each field. The BACKSPACE key will
enable you to move back to a previous field. The backspace
key only backs up from one field to another- it does not back
up from one character to another.
If you wish to continue to the next form instead of
the crop menu, press the TAB key until you reach the position
at the bottom of the form and type "Y" (yes). Then press
ERETURN3, Form 2 will appear. Placing a "Y" in the "NEXT
SCREEN" fields will cause the remainder of those fields'
default values to be "Y". This saves time when all the forms
need to be viewed, by avoiding the crop menu each time.

999 names in the Farm Lab Crop Budget Generator Manual
(FLCBG). Machinery complement names to be changed are found
in the list of 100 names also in the FLCBG Manual. Unit codes
are also in the FLCBG Manual. Names are indicated by number,
so that when the cashflow is done, there is no discontinuity.

Form 1
Form 1, like the crop budget form, gives a brief descrip-
tion of the budget generator. It is useful to have the Users'
Manual for the FARM Lab Livestock Budget Generator with you as
a reference. The identification code, title and footnote and
their usage are explained in the manual as are the different
forms throughout the budget.

When you've chosen the cash flow option, as in the other
selections, you'll be prompted for the file name. Example 01
is an example of a cash flow budget. Since the cash flow
option is not long, the example 01 file will be helpful in
guiding you through. The name in the upper right hand corner
of the form must be changed in order for your information to
be saved. Use the TAB, LINEFEED and BACKSPACE function keys
to put in the basic cash flow information. Press [RETURN3.
The list of the possible enterprises will be shown. Up to 12
commodities and their planted acreage can be included in the
cash flow summary.
Execute Only
The Execute Only option enables you to process your budget
changes and check your output. When you select (4) EXECUTE
ONLY, from the menu, the directory of all the stored budgets
is shown. Use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through
the budget until you find the file you wish to run. Press
[RETURN3. (See Appendix A)
View Processed Budgets
This option enables you to look through a budget. The
files will be listed in your account directory at the top of
the screen. A list of all the stored budgets in the Budget
Generator is near the bottom of the scrolled area. Press
14
CRETURN3 to be prompted for a filename. Either the files in
your account or the files in the Budget account can be viewed.
(See Appendix B)
Conclusion
This manual has presented a step-by-step description of
how to run and enter data on the budget generator. The inter-
active budget generator will enable novice users of the IFAS
Network to create, modify and view commodity budgets. It uses
the Form Management System to facilitate the entering and
viewing of the large amount of data required to generate
enterprise budgets.
