FOREWORD

This bibliography lists the titles of publications authored by the
faculty of the Food and Resource Economics Department at the University
of Florida during the period from July 1965 through June 1973. It is
dedicated to Dr. Kenneth R. Tefertiller, who became chairman of the Agri-
cultural Economics Department on July 1, 1965, and left that post to
assume duties as Vice-President for Agricultural Affairs on March 1, 1973.
The name of the Agricultural Economics Department was changed to
the Food and Resource Economics Department in 1972 to reflect more ac-
curately the actual scope of the work carried on by its faculty. In
the same year the faculty, under Dr. Tefertiller's leadership, delineated
the activities of the department into four areas--Commercial Agriculture,
Natural Resources, Rural Development, and Foreign Agriculture. The
titles of publications in this bibliography are classified under these
major headings.
Titles of publications of faculty members with courtesy appointments
(i.e., agricultural economists primarily employed by the U. S. Department
of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Citrus [formerly the Florida
Citrus Commission] and stationed in the department) are included. Publica-
tions initially prepared elsewhere by faculty members but published after
their appointments are included as were reports of work done at the Univer-
sity of Florida and published after the resignation or retirement of faculty
members. Some of the co-authors listed are in other departments of the
University of Florida or are in other institutions or agencies as well as
in private businesses. Professional reports, although not published, on
citrus research and foreign advisory service are included. Speeches, un-
less published, are excluded. Although members of the faculty made pub-
lished contributions as members of commodity and other committees to
three DARE Reports during the period covered by this bibliography, no
listing is made unless a faculty member was specifically designated as the
author of an article or report.

A new departmental series, called Ag. Econ. Reports, was initiated
in 1969. This series superseded the former Agricultural Experiment
Stations Agr. Econ. Mimeo Reports and the Cooperative Extension Service
Econ. Series. Following the change of name to Food and Resource Eco-
nomics Department, Ag. Econ. Reports were designated as Economics Reports.
Appreciation is expressed to Mrs. Marjorie Malerk for her untiring
efforts in classifying, editing, and checking items in the bibliography
and for her care in typing various drafts, including the final one.
Thanks are due Stephen P. Sims, former student assistant, for the con-
tribution he made in checking titles in the library and departmental
files. Gratitude is also expressed to present and former faculty members
who supplied the information contained in this report.

Other Crop and Related Reports2

The Candled Facts A monthly outlook and production statistical report on
the poultry industry. Vol. I, No. 1 was released in March 1962 as The
Candled "Fax." The report name was changed to Candled Facts in 1964.
The last release under this title was dated December 1966.

These reports, released in Orlando, were published by the Florida Crop
and Livestock Reporting Service (FCLRS), a cooperative agency of the Sta-
tistical Reporting Service of the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, the Division
of Marketing of the Florida Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services,
and the Agricultural Economics (now Food and Resource Economics) Dept. of
the University of Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations.

These reports, released by the FCLRS at Orlando, were usually in co-
operation with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

Florida Dairy Pipe Line. Monthly outlook and production statistics on the
dairy industry. It began in August 1962 and continued through June 1966,
then was discontinued due to lack of funds.

Florida Livestock Roundup. Monthly outlook and production statistics on the
livestock industry. This report started in October 1961 and has been
continuous.

Florida Vegetables--Acreage and Estimated Production. A two-page report re-
leased monthly during the planting and harvesting season; 10 issues were
issued in most crop years, with acreage data and crop notes covering
Florida and competing states. This series of reports was terminated in
December 1972 due to a change in the program.

Florida Vegetables--Annual Summary. Two-page processed report giving acreage,
production, and value for the past two crop years.

Florida Vegetables--Cabbage Monthly Plantings. A monthly processed report
released during each of the five months of the planting season. This
report started in October 1970.

Florida Vegetables--Celery Inventory. A weekly report issued about 45 times
each crop year. Planted acreage, harvested and/or passed acreage, and
production harvested each week are shown on a weekly processed report.
Monthly celery statistics on Florida and California plantings are released
in a one page processed report.

Florida Vegetables--Eggplant and Pepper. Monthly plantings processed report,
continuous since November 1970, released during the five month planting
season.

Florida Vegetables--Intentions to Plant. Cabbage, celery, escarole (and
chicory), potatoes, strawberries, and watermelons are in the national
program for pre-planting estimates of intentions to plant. Eggplant and
peppers have been added in the Florida report. These reports are
annual and scheduled for release before or at the time the season begins.
Celery, escarole, eggplant, and peppers were added following the change
in policy as of January 1, 1973; the other commodities, including beans
and pickles for processing, have been included over a period of years.

Florida Vegetables--Sweet Corn Plantings (South Florida Areas). Issued
weekly about 36 or 37 weeks each crop year from 1965 through October 1970.

Florida Vegetables--Pole Bean Plantings. Issued weekly, about 36 times per
crop year, having started in the 1965-66 season. The report relates only
to Dade County.

and the Agricultural Economics (now Food and Resource Economics) Dept., Agri-
cultural Experiment Stations or Cooperative Extension Service, University of
Florida. Either G. Norman Rose, stationed at Orlando with the FCLRS, or
Gainesville-based faculty members made contributions to these periodic reports.

Florida Vegetables--Potato Acreage and Production with Comparisons. Potato
reports are issued 11 times annually from the Florida office. These are
monthly processed reports covering intentions to plant, planted acreage,
and forecasts of production in Florida and competing states. They show
utilization of the national fall crop and stocks on hand.

Florida Vegetables--Preliminary Estimates of Production. Activated in
January 1973, these reports are revisions of the previous quarterly
acreages with production and value estimated and released in the month
following the close of a given quarter.

Florida Vegetables--Press Release. Seasonally scheduled weekly two-page
processed report for distribution to news media. It was written pri-
marily by G. Norman Rose from 1965-1971, and was then continued by others.
