The Lhnglish attitude toward Ireland from th3 period

of the Rector-tion consisted in r:earding her in any one

of threc aspects, as a county of England, a colony or as

a foreign country, variously, as it suited English inter-

ests at the tine. Although the fullest rimanifestation of

the insidiousnues of this policy as well as the duplicity

of its character 7ill bsct be realized in the discussion

of the cor.n-rcicl relations between thosc two states, never-

theless, the strictly -political aspect gives a a.;ufficiLnt

indication of its existence. i;or did the English govern-

ment regtrd this policy as unjust or improper in the lcast;

rather was it justified in their minds since it was the
