PREFACE TO VOLUME II.

THE second volume of the Journal consists of six parts, of which two deal with special
subjects-the Discovery by Columbus of the island of Jamaica; and its Aboriginal Indian
Remains.

That no more numbers than these have appeared since the publication of the last part
of the first volume in 1894, is due to lack of funds, as well as to the difficulty experienced

in issuing in the island with any degree of regulairity a publication containing illustrations,
*of which the blocks of all, and the impressions of many, have to be produced in England.

The Curator of the Museum, Mr. J. E. Duerden, A.R.C.Sc. (Lond.), has supervised
the'publication of the scientific portion.

In the selection of contributions for the Journal, and their manner of treatment, the

dual object of the Institute-the Encouragement of Literature, Science and Art in the
island locally, and the duty of contributing, so far as possible, towards the advancement of
these subjects in general-has been borne in mind.
